Sharing a room plan
« on: July 11, 2014, 10:35:10 PM »
Instead of buying a bigger house to accommodate our very busy sons we decided to switch rooms and let them have the master bedroom and build them each loft beds.  Now they have room to wrestle and play! Now we don't have to move and can save more money towards our stash!

That's a great idea!  Honestly, I don't understand why master bedrooms are built so large nowadays--there's so much wasted space!

We have a small place (currently 2 bedrooms) and preteen boy/girl sharing a room for now.  En-suite bath will become a third bedroom soon- with ability to convert back easily to en-suite bath if needs be once they go to college.  Plumbing will be behind drywall and mapped/marked for relocation purposes.

You can make very cheap loft beds with short bookcases and plywood boards. Using this technique, we fit 5 kids (4 teenagers and a preteen) into a 17x17 room with significant eaves.

Our four boys (ages 1-9) all share a 14x11 bedroom, thanks to two sets of bunk beds.  Until recently, we had the crib set up in that room as well, so we could easily fit 5 if needed.

I slept in a bunk bed or shared a room my entire life until I transferred to my 4-year university 4 years ago. Now I have my own room... it's strange. I even had a large bedroom with my two brothers a few years back.

The only issue with not having your own room is I'm generally very late to bed and to rise, and have been for a decade.

We once lived in an apartment where my mom had the downstairs bedroom and us four girls had the top floor with 2 sets of bunk beds. That was my favorite place we ever lived! Yeah, master bedrooms are great for multiple kids - especially now that we have IKEA and they sell all those cool room divider options like curtains & box shelves. Each kid can have their own bed plus still room for a play area.

We'd like to downsize in the next 3 years from our 2000 sq ft house to more like 1,000-1200.   I was just thinking yesterday about minimums we'd want and realized that DH and I really only need a room big enough for a bed (and a dresser unless it could fit in a closet) and we could give DD any larger room so she could keep all her toys in there (which are now in her room + a playroom).   If kids need room for playing and adults just sleep in their room, it only makes sense for kids to have the larger room, IMO.

Great idea!  I loved sharing a room with my sister growing up.  We are still very close today because of it.  I plan to have some room sharing for my kids as well once I have more than one... :)
