To the parent whose kid struggles with school topics
« on: September 23, 2019, 10:59:51 PM »
I was just about to reply to someone who posted asking for help/ideas for their child who struggles with school related topics, but the reply button disappeared and now I cannot find the post. I’m guessing you deleted the post, but I really wanted to reply as what you are describing could be convergence insuffciency, or CI for short.

CI makes it hard for a person to do up-close work like reading. Kids with CI often have a lot of trouble reading and with school work and are often mis-diagnosed with things like ADHD. Someone with CI will have vision issues like double vision when trying to read. This causes frustration, fatigue, headaches, etc and kids will then avoid school work. Most people with CI don’t know that they have a vision problem, they just know that they struggle with school work or reading, etc.

A standard vision test will not catch CI. But, you can have an optometrist check your child for CI and t can be cured with vision therapy (vision therapy fine tunes the visual system to help the eyes coordinate better when doing near work, thus fixing the root cause of the problem).
