San Francisco Trip w/Kids
« on: June 08, 2019, 01:57:51 PM »
In July, we are going to San Francisco with our two-year-old and six-year-old. We are staying in an Airbnb near Lands End. The primary goal of the trip is to let the kids be outside. We are from Las Vegas, so our summers are spent indoors. We plan to go to the zoo because we don't have one in Las Vegas, but otherwise we don't plan to do paid attractions. Last year, we went to Monterrey and the kids liked the free state beach MUCH more than the pricey, crowded aquarium. There seem to be a lot of Bay Area people on the forum, so I thought I would ask - any tips on SF public transportation with littles? We have a car service with carseats to and from SFO lined up, but otherwise we plan to walk or take the bus. Thank you in advance!

You can explore Golden Gate Park, right in the city and easily accessible by Muni.

You can download the SF Muni app, which enables you to buy & redeem fares on your smartphone, even for multiple riders or whilst in airplane mode.

There are several different types of vehicles used on the routes - diesel buses, cable cars, old-timey coaches, etc - and some are more stroller-friendly than others.

Ocean Beach is pretty great. Chilly water, but ok for dipping toes. Playing on the beach for hours would be fun. Lots of options for places to get picnic supplies.

Not super budget friendly, but the Exploratorium would be fun, especially for your 6 year old. Not too far are the Filbert Steps, lots of trees and great views. The Academy of Sciences in GG Park is a wonderland for kids.

Maybe a trip to Sausalito and back on the ferry?

July weather can be unpredictable: warm days with windy, foggy late afternoons. Wear good walking shoes.

Definitely definitely bring jackets for everyone, SF micro climates are unpredictable. I had a co-worker from Buffalo who sold his wife on moving to SF to be in "warm weather." They moved in the summer and needless to say, his wife was not impressed ;). I used to live on the peninsula and commute into SF for work. Some days when it was really hot I'd forget about bringing a jacket, then had to endure cold windy days in the city.

+1. As Mark Twain (allegedly) said, "the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."

If you're willing to reconsider avoiding paid activities, I agree with @calimom that the Exploratorium and Academy of Sciences are awesome for kids, as is the Bay Area Discovery Museum in Sausalito, which is about 2 miles from the ferry terminal, so walkable if you don't mind a lot of walking.

ETA: if you're members of any museums in Las Vegas, check if you can get free/discounted admission at any SF museums - for example, I know the Bay Area Discovery Museum is part of the ASTC passport program, so offers admission benefits for members of other ASTC museums.

Lands Ends, The zoo & ocean beach are all really fun, but it will be cold. Bring long pants, wind breakers and fleece jackets. Even winter hats.  Strong steady wind coming off a 50 degree ocean is just cold. Ocean beach has really strong rip currents and frequent lurking big waves, keep a very close eye on anyone near the water.
Google "SFgate neighborhood guides" for free guides to each area of the city.

Close to Lands End is the Legion of Honor museum. There is an amazing organ that is at the museum. They do a free concert once a week with admission. Really cool to check out the sculptures & Monet while listening to organ music while the fog rolls in.
Also close to Lands end you can walk through the presidio down to baker or china beach. More sheltered than Ocean Beach with good views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Pier 39 is a tourist trap, but its free & fun to see the sea lions. You can catch a ferry from there to Angel Island if you want to get out in the bay.
Strollers are a pain on public transportations & crowded sidewalks. I preferred to have an easy way to carry a little kid when we went to really crowded spots like Pier 39 or Chinatown.
Bring lots of hand sanatiser for your kids. There is lots of stuff on SF public transportation that your kids will touch that need sanitizing.
