Sale on car-replacing bakfiets family bike (can carry 4+ kids)
« on: November 26, 2014, 05:54:51 PM »
In a previous thread (http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/mini-money-mustaches/family-bike-(carries-4-kids-groceries!)-bakfiets-has-anyone-tried-this/) I asked about the bakfiets as a car replacing bike for my family in Michigan.

I just wanted to let you know that I finally ordered one today because of an extreme discount offered by Rolling Orange Bikes in Brooklyn, NY. They are clearing out their inventory of the Bakfiets.nl. I had been planning on purchasing this bike with pedal assist/e-assist and the necessary kid accessories (rain cover, box benches) for about $5,200 USD next year. Instead I was able to buy it for $2,909 because of their sale. Thought I'd post it here if anyone else was interested. I've been researching for months and have checked with dealers of the Dutch box bikes all over the US and Canada. This is an excellent, durable bike (we expect to use it for 10+ years and four kids).

I don't have any affiliation with the shop, but I know there are other families on this forum trying to figure out how to transport larger families, so I thought I'd post it. The guy I talked to said the sale pricing applies this Friday through Sunday.

P.S. I know this purchase will seem anti-mustachian to some, but we would have otherwise spent $3780 on transportation for my kids and baby and toddler in one single year. I'm spending $2909 now, but taking my future transportation costs down to something marginal (bike maintenance costs), so this is a good thing given my family's circumstances. A regular bike plus rear trailer wasn't going to cut it for my growing family in Michigan winters, although this certainly would have been even cheaper.

Wow!  Congratulations on your bike purchase! I hope it adds to the health, financial fitness, and overall happiness of your life!

Two weeks ago, in our local neighborhood, I saw a family transporting their children via cargo bikes.  I was so happy and excited (this is THE first time I've ever seen another local family using cargo bikes for transporting children) that I left my stroller and flagged them down and started speaking gibberish, ("We have your bikes too!  Come to my house!!)

Anyway, they are very dedicated to biking, and they planned a cargo bike meetup for families in a local park last weekend. People met up to share their cargo set-ups or try out someone else's bike to see if this could work for them too.  It was great!  I am hopeful about the future of cargo-biking in my area, and our country!!  Welcome to a really cool, really fun way to get around with a bunch of children in tow!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
