Poof! Just turned into the Easter Bunny!
« on: March 30, 2013, 06:02:50 AM »
Overheard this afternoon, one teen to another " What are you gonna do tomorrow? " Dunno. Sit around eating chocolate".

For years I've been weaning them off those expensive crappy compounded chocolate eggs.  This year: No chocolate eggs whatsoever. The Bunny will bring a large 400g  Toblerone and a 200g pile of Lindt balls each.  All purchased naturally earlier this year on 50% special. Total $7.50 each.

Ahem...at what age does the Easter Bunny stop coming? At 17 and 15, how far off do you reckon I am?

Now I just need to go Poof! Hop Hop silently up those stairs  with my Easter basket and try not to trip over in the dark,  which would totally ruin the effect.

Managed to convince the eldest son (22) that we'd get better value for money buying easter eggs just after easter, instead of line up with with all the other dumb bunnies to buy them before hand. Unfortunately, the wife saw my shrewdness this Easter as an Egg too Far and wanted to buy some beforehand. We came to a compromise and bought a standard block of Cadbury chocolate for 30% off and getting 200g of basically the same chocolate for nearly 1/2 the price of a measily 100g foil wrapped egg. Bar chocolate is so much easier to eat in any case.

I buy them all on the Tuesday after Easter (cheap bastard I know). 75% off...bags and bags of those tiny ones.

It lasts till about October. The workmates get a fright whenever I bring them in..."you STILL eating those???"

Easter bunny should stop coming when they figure out there is no easter bunny.

When I was 12 and we started living near supermarkets and stuff, my mother flat out told me and my brothers (10 and 7) and the 5 year old sister too that we could either get easter eggs on Sunday and get one, or get them on Monday on sale and get two or three. Well momma didn't raise no fools (also she's a queen of frugality) and even the 5 year old knew that two eggs was a lot more than one egg.

I just informed the 8yo and 10yo there would be no Easter Egg hunt tomorrow. Their response? "Will we still get candy?" When I told them they'd get some from their grandparents, they simply shrugged and said, "I'm okay with that." No big easter egg hunt or baskets this year. They'll each get $15 from us to spend/save as they see fit and that'll be the end of it. Pretty sure their spendy grandparents will have ginormous easter baskets/gifts for them.

LOL@
as an Egg too Far

Hehehehehe!

I told them yesterday the bunny wouldn't be coming (worth a try) since they no longer had sufficient belief....an entertaining 20mins was had whilst they jumped through hoops, debating as only a teenager can,  "proving" they still believed.

I found it amazing I could buy a kg of reasonably good quality chocolate for the same as I would have paid for a fairly moderate poor quality "easter" item each.

kkb, you and your kids are more badass than us! Think its about time for EB to stop coming! Had a giggle at Marty and Richards comments too.

Happy Easter everyone

We gave the kids a book each in the series that they are each reading (yes I know the library is free, and that is where most of their books come from but they like to read their books over and over and over again, and then swap).
Then went over to the park and did a compass trail to find their Easter eggs ( I was casually hanging around in the general vicinity of the eggs to keep an eye out for marauding dogs/teenagers/others). DS8 has just learnt to use a compass at Scouts so was super keen to do this to track down his eggs, and they loved it. Will be doing it again next year, but ending up at home for the final location, to save on anxiety :-)

We buy a 2x quality bars of chocolate, melt them down and make scorched almonds, and chocolate coated date and coconut eggs. Went down a hit.

They'll each get $15 from us to spend/save as they see fit and that'll be the end of it. Pretty sure their spendy grandparents will have ginormous easter baskets/gifts for them.

And, here are the results (drumroll, please) (same for each kid):

From Spendy Grandparents: 1 16 oz. solid Neuhaus Chocolate Easter Bunny, 1 Neuhaus chocolate easter bunny lollipop made of chocolate, some other stuff in their gift bags I haven't seen yet. Estimated Retail Value of just these two chocolate items: About $45.

From Aunt/Uncle: 2 plastic eggs with candy in them, a package of gum balls and a Rubik's cube. (Yay, much better.)

We gave each kid $15 in a plastic easter egg, wrapped in a gift bag, and gave each of our nieces (ages 3 and newborn) a $5 bill inside a plastic easter egg, wrapped up in tissue paper. All plastic eggs were ones we've had since the kids were 3 and 1. We haven't purchased easter eggs since then, we just keep reusing the same ones over and over. The gift bags were ones I had in my gift wrap stash and are back there now. The tissue paper was from the gift wrap stash and is now in the trash. (I don't think it's recyclable.)

They were both pleased as punch to get cash, chocolate and the rubik's cube. We spent $40 from our gift fund. In year's past, with all of the Easter eggs, baskets, candy, etc. we would easily have spent over $100. So, much improved this year.

And, yesterday we donated 4 garbage bags full of clothes, sheets, and household items to a charitable organization. All in all, a decent weekend.

Well, the compromise I made with my wife re buying easter eggs was not as it seemed. Turns out it was one of those moments in a man's life where no from your wife actually subliminally meant yes and I was supposed to go out and buy her a fancy easter egg despite her agreeing to wait until post-easter discounts come through. Oh well!

My "little"ones  (ages 13 and 10) insisted on the easter egg hunt in the garden. The 18 year old hid the eggs.

I bought some crappy chocolate for the hunt, and some good chocolate that didn't get put in the grass outside.

Well - I kind of get nostalgic for the easter egg hunt thing - - it's really my own fault.  : b

A while yet! I'm nearly 30 and both my parents AND my in-laws gave me gourmet chocolates for Easter. Apparently you're never too old for Easter chocolate :D
