Can you imagine what the reply was?!?!  "The public bank has been full for a year, so you delay clamping as long as you want!  Unless you want to do a private bank."

That's remarkable. In North Carolina, Duke's public bank will send out free collection kits to anyone delivering in any hospital in the state and they're hoping to eventually be able to reach beyond state/national lines.

I did the NIPT and a 13 week anatomy scan recently at the face punchable total cost of $600

I wasn't convinced but was talked into it by my doctor and am overall glad I did it. The scan was brilliant and really made me feel closer to the baby. It also made me feel more confident about sharing the news with others. My family all live far away so I was worried about telling them and then finding out that something was wrong and them feeling helpless so far away.

The NIPT test, I still don't know if it was 'worth it'. My results came back clear which is what I'd have assumed if I hadn't taken the test anyway. Maybe I'd feel differently if they had come back positive.

Interesting that the anatomy scan is at 13 weeks where you are!  I mainly hear 19-21 weeks, although I had a friend that used to live in California who said she had her anatomy scan much earlier there - better equipment, I guess.  I paid $300-ish for my anatomy scan and the NIPT was covered since I am over 35.  But you know, sometimes it is really hard to learn how much these things are going to cost ahead of time, and if it gave you peace of mind, it sounds like it was worth it.

I have another anatomy scan at 19 weeks which will be mostly covered by the public health system here. I have been going to a private clinic for scans since it is convenient with my work (also they don't make you drink 1L of water before hand and then run over an hour late and insist you don't use the bathroom) so might be out of pocket a little. I'll call around prior to booking to find out how much and if it is worth it for that one.

The NIPT isn't covered for anyone in Australia regardless of age or health care cover. The nuchal translucency screening is more standard here and more of the costs of those tests are covered by our public health care system. In most (maybe all) cases they are still seen as optional tests so not covered in full.
