Look at my stuff!
« on: July 24, 2016, 09:25:06 AM »
I have a 8 year old nephew who, every time we visit, wants to show me his "stuff." While we were visiting yesterday I happened to wonder if this was a normal thing for kids that age, regardless of their parents' attitude toward material items as happiness. We have some friends with two boys in the same age range and I notice it occasionally, but not so much that it grabs my attention. The thought piqued my interest so I thought I would pose the question here. I'm wondering if the "looks at my stuff" thing is more due to being raised to value material things or if it's just a typical kid thing regardless. I don't think my sister-in-law and her husband really value stuff as a source of happiness so I suspect it's just a kid thing.

I have 2 kids that I raise frugally.  My older son used to love to show off his stuff when we had visitors when he was around ages 3-5.  Now that he is 7 he has stopped. He does still like to give visitors a tour of our 2 bedroom condo though :)  My younger son (age 5 now) never did that kind of thing.  I would just chalk it up to something quirky that kids do.

It's a kid thing.  Kids do it.

Adults do it too.  It's an adult thing too.

Not necessarily linked on an individual level, though.

Yea I vote kid thing. I've worked at a lot of various kids programs and 'look at my thing" was pretty common. Sometimes it was the rock they just picked up or the new shoes or whatever. Kids just like to share the stuff they are excited about.

Total kid thing.  Be flattered he wants to share his happiness with you.  If he didn't like you, he wouldn't share.

Your signature appears to link to three separate blogs you write.

Something to ponder as you wonder about your nephew.

I don't view the issue in any particular light, negative or positive. The question occurred to me so I figured I'd ask out of curiosity.

Touche! I can probably drop the AT blog link since that journey is over for the time being.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
