How much should we charge (part time nanny)?
« on: June 10, 2016, 04:27:12 PM »
We are being interviewed today to be a part time nanny for a 10 yr old boy for the summer. 9 am - 3 pm M-F

He has some number of camps and other things scheduled - not sure if that means weeks off completely from needing us, or if it means we need to drive him around at various times.
We have a similarly aged boy and 2 other children at home. No idea if we need to provide lunch. From the listing, it seems that she doesn't quite know what the job is worth either.

Also wanting to figure out a way to get some sort of incidentals pay - if we go to admission fee based places or buy a treat while out. Any advice?

for reference: full day 7am - 6 pm summer camp at the local rec center is $185 a week and includes 1 weekly excursion.

This is less time but less children and more personalized. She wants him to do a bit of math and reading.

The recommendation will vary widely depending on where you live and how things are typically done in your community. I would recommend charging the local rate for a nanny. Where I live (high cost of living), a nanny or sitter for 1 child is roughly $15 / hr, 2 kids $18 / hr, 3 kids $21 / hr, 4 kids $24/ hr. Parents pay all incidentals and provide all food. So a mom with 1 kid taking on a second kid as a nanny would charge the nanny family $18/2 = $9/hr. A mom with 3 kids taking on a 4th as a nanny would charge $24/4 = $6/hr.

Based on the cost of camp in your area, your local babysitting / nanny rates are probably lower, but the same principle / scaling could apply.

I'm sure other will suggest other fair ways to charge, but this is what came to mind for me.

For point of reference, here in Denver I pay a SAHM $30 to pick up my son from preschool at 11 and keep him until 4. She provides lunch. (Unless the kid is a very picky eater, it seems like it would make more sense for him to eat what your kids are eating instead of his mom packing him a lunch.) She charges $35 for the whole day but gives me a discount because it's not the whole day.

That actually aligns really closely with the $6/hour recommendation, now that I notice it! If it is just an hour--like if she picks him up at 11 and I am there by noon--I pay $10/hour because of the pickup. (Which is one block from her house.)

I'm not really clear on if this is a "nanny" situation or more like you just have an extra kid hanging out at your house doing what your kids do. Seems like that would affect the rate!

Thank you! We ended up at about $6  / hr with incidentals being covered by them. It was agreed upon before I saw this response and my sister in law was guilting me that we weren't charging enough.
We provide lunch and they will provide some snacks (apparently he is an eater). Today was the first day and I am hoping it will end up being simple for everyone. A few adjustment pains today (mainly by my kids)
