Nutritionist recommended,

$21 per canister, extremely pricey.   Our daughter is still breast feeding (9mths old), but my GF will be back to work in 3 mths and she'll be on formula.

Any suggestions?

If she is nine months, she could be on baby food and some milk.  At 12 months my daughter was off all formula.

Pump and solid foods. Look up baby-led weaning. (Disclosure: I'm basically a pro-nipple hippie.)

I know my brother was allergic to cow's milk (not sure what part of it) and that my mother was able to avoid problems by using goat milk.  So that may be one possibility worth exploring.

Depending on your situation and your DD (e.g. does she need to gain weight, etc., and lots of stuff we may not know about), you will likely find that "milk" (human, cow, goat, or otherwise) or milk substitutes (formula) become a much smaller part of her diet over the next six months to a year, so honestly I wouldn't worry about it too much.  Find something that works (even if it is expensive hypoallergenic formula) and go with that.  I know (some) Mustachians like to sweat the small stuff, but in the overall scheme of things, this is a drop in the bucket.

my friend's daughter has a milk allergy as well, her doctor recommended elecare formula. I know it isn't cheap but I don't know how much either. But it might be an alternative formula.

In 3 months she'll be able to have whatever non-cows milk option you want to try. I'm pretty sure only babies who are under weight, or have other medical concerns, need formula after 12 months. I've also heard that a lot of milk-allergic babies outgrow their allergy, so cows milk may be possible by then anyway.

Also, just because your GF is going back to work, doesn't mean it has to be the end of breastfeeding. I nursed both my kids well beyond 12 months, but as they get older, they eat more solid food and drink less milk.

I'm not quite sure what your daughter is allergic to---if it is just the lactose or also something else.  Mine is very lactose intolerant and we have found Organic Valley Lactose free milk works best for her.

My daughter is underweight and they actually had me give her cow's milk earlier because of it.  It is higher calorie than formula.  I know of no reason, to be honest, other than stomach illnesses that may have a child of formula after 12 months of age.

We call her "bubble girl" :), she is allergic to ALOT of things.  She got it probably from my GF as she went through the same thing as a child.  She's not underweight, she's actually a very big girl for her age as is my son (2.5yrs old).

Doctors says that as well as most kids will outgrow the milk allergy around 2.5-3yrs old... we'll see.  We have appointments for test every 4mths so there are no "trials" as home as we already went to the emergency room once when she 'blew up' a few weeks back, not even sure what she ate.  We have epy pens all around the house.

She is self feeding currently (only way she eats) so that's good, soft mushy foods by hand.  Seems Nutrimigen is the only readily available formula for us if we decide to go that way.

Poor girl has bad eczema as well on her legs which we have perscription meds for as well.  Odd as my son has NONE of these issues.

Oh well, both are happy and healthy and that's what matters most.

I second the suggestions of continued breastfeeding and increasing her solid food intake.  At 12 months when I went back to work my little guy was still breastfeeding 3 times a day (morning, after work, bedtime - so no pumping required), which is enough that you don't have to sub formula.  We also offered almond milk (Silk True Almond) which he really likes at lunch time.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
