Celebrate with me!
« on: December 10, 2013, 11:48:35 AM »
Both kids applied to college. One is still waiting to hear if he got into the program.  FINGERS crossed! The other got accepted into the  engineering program! He was pretty sure he wanted to go locally because of not having to live on campus so he could end up with some of his college money left at graduation. He didn't really seem happy with what he though he wanted as a major. I told him to pretend $ was off the table and think about what he wanted to do. Not what it cost. He said  engineering.  I told him to go for it and apply instead of settle.

He got accepted.  It will cost us $10k more a year since he will have to live on campus. He has his PT job set up and can transfer when college starts next fall. They reimburse students up to $3400 a year for 4 years. He has applied for the schools engineering scholarships and may have a good shot because he had fantastic scores. We were astounded how fast he got his acceptance. I am glad he spoke up and said what he really wanted and I am so proud of him for getting accepted!!!! Happy we have the cash to pay!!!

Now I am on pins and needles waiting to hear about our other son! He also will be working for the same company par-time to get the reimbursement.

Congratulations,

I am a professional engineer in Oregon and can honestly say my 30 year career has been extremely rewarding both financially and its interesting work.

Good for him.

Sounds like your son found his calling.  Good for you for asking the right question!  Worth every extra penny in a case like this.

Congratulations!! I have two boys (but they are 7 and 17 months).  They are already showing signs of following in mommy and daddy's engineering footsteps though.

I love being an engineer.  LOVE it.

Congratulations!  That's wonderful news!  I'm of the opinion that enjoying what you do (including what you are studying) is a huge help in doing well in it, and that both those things (enjoyment, and some sort of "success," not necessarily ... financial!) are tremendously valuable.
