$50,000 for each surrogacy
« on: April 23, 2018, 02:43:06 PM »
Surrogacy pays a lot. Some women are sick through pregnancy and it would not be worth it. Others deal pretty well - more fatigue and backpain, but not a debilitating condition. Maybe it's worth it?

Okay, no idea what would be the right subforum for this (I've been lurking for years, but mostly stuck to the Wall of Shame and Comedy).
Anyway... I've been wanting to do it. I like pregnancy way more than menstruating! Curious to hear if you would consider it :)

I've known two different people who have been surrogates, and my husband's best friend and wife are using a surrogate after multiple failed IVF attempts (they are multi-millionaires so money is not an issue for them at all). The people I know who were surrogates didn't do it so much for the money as they did to help other people who wanted kids and couldn't have their own. I would have considered being a surrogate at one point, but since I'll be 40 this year that ship has sailed!

The age ship has sailed for me as well, but I did offer to be a surrogate for a college friend (long after college). As it turned out, she and her husband were good on their own eventually.

A former neighbor of mine did this as her job. Considering self employment taxes, it doesn't bring in as much as it sounds.

I know her contract states she would under no circumstances terminate a pregnancy. When severe genetic abnormalities crop up, I know that having a third party can get super complicated. Also find out what happens to your contract if you miscarry or have a still birth.

She has had her surrogacies between her biological children.

I'd need like 20x that $$$ to be pregnant again...

I wouldn't consider it even if I were eligible (age, previous complications).  My health hasn't bounced back from having my own kids, I wouldn't risk further damage.

Not for me. I wouldn't be able to give the baby up after carrying it so long. Plus, now, it would be too hard on my kids as they always want another sibling.

I'm too old.

Neighbors up the street (gay male couple) used it to get their twins.

A friend of mine with 3 kids of her own was a surrogate for a different gay male couple overseas.

There are requirements involved - I believe you must have delivered at least one child of your own before you can sign up to be a surrogate. You must also be in excellent health, not overweight, mentally well, etc.

A lot of women lose their bodies after pregnancy. I wouldn't do it for $50k, but I am very rich.

I did the math on it, because I, too, like additional income streams, and realized it was basically a stressful minimum-wage job that makes you fat.

Pass.

Laws vary widely by jurisdiction.  In some places in the US it is illegal, for instance.  Washington state makes it criminal to pay for surrogacy, though you can do it for free. In Michigan the contracts are non-enforceable even if the surrogate is not paid, though paying for it results in criminal penalty.

As for requirements- in my state, it is legal for someone to ask me to be their surrogate and me to say yes. Who would enforce the requirements you've stated?  Those must be the requirements of a specific agency.  (Again- antecdata- neighbor is not obese, but having carried 6 pregnancies before age 30, is overweight.)

I'm a dude and it doesn't seem worth it.  Who knows what type of depression it might trigger?   How does egg donation compare?

Inna, how many pregnancies have you had so far? I've not had any, but I wouldn't do this for any amount of money. (Given my financial position and lack of need, of course!) Too dangerous, too unpredictable, too hard on the body.

$8-10k
It can trigger some pretty complicated feelings though (as unlike most surrogacy, you have a biological child out there) and egg retrieval is a complex and invasive process.

A high school friend did it 3 times in her 20s to pay for school and had great eggs, then found out in her 30s she didn't ovulate naturally. But couldn't afford IVF for herself.

There is no way I'd do surrogacy even though I had relatively easy pregnancies.  I can't imagine carrying and giving birth to a baby and then giving it up.  $50K does not seem like nearly enough just for the wear and tear on your body and time off work.

As someone who struggled (multiple IVFs) to become pregnant and have one kid (and would have like to have a second, but no luck), and who has friends (a few IRL, more on the internet) who've become parents thanks to the generosity of surrogates, I am certainly grateful that this option exists and that there are people willing to serve as surrogates to allow people to become parents.

Once I got pregnant, I had a blissfully straightfoward pregnancy and a healthy kid.  Though serving as a surrogate might be something I'd want to do in order to help a person become a parent, no way in heck would I do it.  I cannot imagine carrying and birthing a child and then being able to allow another person to take over the role of mothering it, nor would I be willing to take on the health risks, hassle, or to explain to my family (including my own kid) what I was doing.  That's regardless of the pricetag attached to the service, honestly ... I just wouldn't be able to, or want to.

I am considering it, once my youngest is a bit older (he's 1.5 now), but not necessarily for the money aspect. I have three kids, and my pregnancies have all been relatively easy. I have met quite a few couples that are amazing people and so deserving of having a child but have been struggling or just can't for various reasons, so I want to help people like that. I have a desk job (software engineer), so I'm not so concerned about being pregnant affecting my job. Any money that I would get for being a surrogate, I would put towards my kids' college savings.
