Title: Sydney meetup
Post by: marty998 on January 24, 2014, 12:32:43 AM
Ok I have to say I'm a bit jealous of all those lovely Perth girls having so much fun over in the wild west ;)

It's probably about time a similar party was held on the East Coast. I know you're all out there. Who's keen to meet up in Sydney???

I was just thinking the same.

I live in the bush capital but I'd be happy to come up for a meet up, though preferably on a long weekend ;)

Good on you marty998, I was thinking the same thing.
I'm not far from Sydney, and would love to come up. Provided an old gal won't spoil the fun :).

I'm also in Canberra, but in Sydney a day or two a week.  Would be keen for a meetup in either area.

Appears we just missed a decent long weekend Ninjaj. I've actually just enjoyed 6 days off courtesy of having way too much annual leave accrued.

Looking forward, the next "block" to take off is the few days between Easter Monday and Anzac day. 10 days straight from Good Friday for only 3 days annual leave. Yahooee.

Happy, bigchrisb, the next thing to work out is what we want to do? (Maybe this will help drag some lurkers out?) I was going to suggest $10 steak & chips at Cargo Bar Darling Harbour but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to come all the way in for a 1 hour lunch!

Another Canberran here (well, close enough), interested in a meetup. Given where we are each calling in from, perhaps somewhere midpoint between Canberra and Sydney could be the go. Mittagong/Bowral?

Post by: happy on January 28, 2014, 02:23:13 PM
I'm happy to go north or south. Could even go to Canberra for a day trip.  As a suggestion, what about Berrima?  Pretty. Bit of a tourist trap, but from vague memory I think there is somewhere we could picnic.  If we do Sydney, could it either be accessible by train, or somewhere with easy parking (preferably free)? $10 steak and chips sounds like a bargain though.

Great - with 3 from Canberra and 2 from Sydney there sounds to be enough critical mass to make this work.  I'm keen for a picnic half way. Lets pick somewhere along the rail line from Sydney so there is a non-car option for Sydney folks (in the spirit of mustachianism).  Moss vale has a park next to the railway station?

I'm tempted to throw my bike in the car and do a ride afterwards to fitzroy, belmore and/or carrington falls.  I'm thinking a sedate cycle over a few hours if anyone wants to join me.

I can give a lift to someone from Canberra if anyone wants to car pool

A stop somewhere along the Sydney/Canberra train line and a picnic sounds like a fine idea to me.

My only blackout dates are from this Fri to next Sat, whereby I will be holidaying in New Zealand, South Island with my lovely wife.

Don't worry, I haven't gone all spendy all of a sudden. We'll be mustachian holidaying, meaning taking cheap Jetstar flights ($300 return each!), driving/sleeping/eating in a budget campervan, some freedom (as they call it in NZ) camping and a DIY itinerary involving lots of free hiking and sightseeing.

Looking forward to both the holiday and the suggested meetup!

I'm also from canberra and keen for the meetup between Canberra and Sydney.  My availability is sporadic and will depend on the specific date that is chosen.

Thanks Marty for taking the initiative to start the topic.

I'm also happy to carpool

HAHAHA whenever I hear of "mid way between Sydney and Canberra" I immediately think of Paintball @ Penrose near Moss Vale.

My god I lost a lot of skin, blood, dignity and moolah that day. I've never had so much fun being shot black and blue by my mates. One of them got me real good (nipple shots....owwwwwwwwwwwwww). I said, mate fuck you, you are not getting in my car you can walk back to Sydney.

How sedate? Happy to bring my bike and go for a ride around wherever. I tend to cruise at about 17-18km/h on a bike. Up to 25km/h if it is flat enough.
Title: Re: Sydney meetup
Post by: happy on January 29, 2014, 02:12:38 PM
All sounds good EXCEPT the paint ball.

I would drive to Southern Highlands, since to catch the train I would need to go up to Sydney change and then go back out - could take 3 hours or so. No problem leaving the venue rail accessible for any other rail commuters, just sayin in case the venue is being chosen with me being the only potential rail user.

Not likely to be able to keep up with you young fellas on a bike,  but perfectly fine with coming for the picnic part and leaving you guys to it. I'm pretty free at the moment but once school is back will start to collect engagements.

NZ sounds great Ozstache.  Spent a week or so there on South Island in a camper van many moons ago. The distances are relatively small so it works well.

Sounds about right to me!  I'm a commuter tyres on a mountain bike kinda guy, rather than part of the fibre/lycra/latte brigade

Yeah mountain bike for me, usually wear a singlet and boardies. I don't think you'll ever catch me in lycra.

My Saturday's are blacked out for a month, cricket season is still on. Although we are getting smashed this year, I love it too much to miss a game.

I can only really do Sundays if we are going to meet at Moss Vale. Thinking about driving to Campbelltown and then getting a train (90minutes from C'town to MV, the return fare is much cheaper than burning petrol), BUT I'm scared to leave my car all day in the south western suburbs. I know it's not good to stereotype, but that whole slice of Sydney scares me :)

Okey Dokey, will we keep the momentum and pick a Sunday?

After consultation with the SO, it would seem my Sundays are of limited availability over the next few weeks!  How about the 16th of March?
Title: Re: Sydney meetup

Works for me, by then cricket season is over and I could do Saturday 15th if that gives us another option.

Ok, 16th of March in the Southern Highlands.  I'll be taking my pushy for a ride to the waterfalls after.

Thus far, Marty998 and myself.  Any others?

Hi all, I'll be reading the meetup from a distance. My weekends are booked with work and volunteering. I thought the mustachian thing would be bring a plate at some mustachian's home then do a round robin. But I guess a great deal of trust needs to be first established and i'm pretty much a newbie around here.

Train timetable attached for those coming from Sydney end:

Thinking maybe the 10:04am from Campbelltown on the way down and 3:59pm from Moss Vale on the way back.

Sorry to bail, but I'm going to skip this one.  I've decided that I'm spending too much time obsessing about PF, and need to give it a rest.  Might hope to catch up at the next one.

No probs BCB. How many of us are there left?

Ozstache?
Happy?

Should we continue if it's just the 3 of us? Just thinking what is there actually to do in Moss Vale. I'm not exactly the type to sit on a picnic rug and chat for half a day haha.

Lunch at local hotel maybe is all I can really think of. If it's going to take me 4 hours to commute there and back I want to make the most of the day :)

It looks like I'd be the only one coming from Canberra, so perhaps it is better for all if I dip out on this one and you guys meet up closer to the Sydney CBD.

I was wondering how many to make a quorum….

Are there any other takers other than Marty and I?  BIG SHOUT OUT to any one else within cooee. This is your big chance to come to the best meet up Down Under.

Marty, mate, no offence but I think if its just us two we should try to reconvene, when (and if?) there is a bit more interest.

Touché, erm... 'Martina'.
(Interestingly I do have a couple of straight guy friends who knit. It's approached like lego, with shapes, engineering and lots of numbers.)

I would have to say that when all of us met each other it took a couple of meetups for most people to be comfortable that none of us were mass murderers, etc.

hmm, well I'm still not sold. Guys...knitting?. Seriously? I know we live in a time where historical gender roles don't really matter anymore, but it's so hard to repress the urge to poke fun at this one :)

Problem might be your preconceived notions of knitting, rather than the guys who do it? Heh.
Can't see much difference between knitting and say whittling (which seems to have more masculine associations and also uses pointed implements)
Title: Re: Sydney meetup

Dare I say that I could knit earlier in my life....
Title: Re: Sydney meetup
Post by: stripey on March 30, 2014, 07:57:26 AM
I wouldn't make too many assumptions based on gender about these things-- I have had three line managers in my career that were both straight and male:

- One could knit very well, and went through a weaving phase (both on a loom, and basket weaving).
- Another and made period costume and props for theatre as a side venture. He also fixed up the aforementioned 'beautiful' knitting needles once for me and commented about how nicely made they were at the time.
- The third was a very blokey bloke who wouldn't be caught dead doing textile work.

None of these people would be young or hipster enough to be considered metrosexual. Also I don't work in an artistic field, it is in a field traditionally considered a 'man's vocation', and I do have a tomboy streak in me (apart from occasionally knitting, I will quite happily play with Meccano)

Locals hmmm....Sydney is an awfully big place. What's local to me is probably other side of the world to most others.

City pubs and eateries are quite expensive too. My local chinese tastes pretty good but I live in the outer suburbs and it's hard to get to.

I might be on leave from work that week, so any of the days beforehand could work for me too.

What about a meet up somewhere central (ish) located.

The Botanic Gardens is a nice central place. We could bring our own lunch, or depending on numbers, maybe a pot luck picnic lunch could work.

What do people think?

No luck yesterday. Saw a nice one but on a main road with high strata fees.

Saw a shit one too which would be great for a reno but a few other buyers had the same idea and the I think the seller is also being a bit greedy.

Hello Sydneysiders,

I thought I'd highjack your meet up thread to try and make some new connections while I'm in Sydney for a business trip.  My wife and I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota and are still in the accumulation phase of FI.  My employer had deemed it necessary that I be in Sydney for 3-4 weeks starting around Jan. 12th and I'd love to meet some like-minded people to make the most of my stay.  Can I convince you guys to target mid-January for a Sydney meet up?

I could possibly get in after work on Friday. Are you based in the CBD? I don't get into the city often enough to know many good meeting places, at least not the ones that are Mustachian. As the guys have mentioned it is a pretty non-mustache city. More reason to try meet like minded people I guess.

Any more of the Sydney gang keen on the meet up, or have any suggestions?

This may have been suggested before, but would people be into BYOB/uncorking some wine in the Botanic Gardens this coming Friday (30th), weather permitting?

Johnners!  Sorry about the noncom.  Arriving in Sydney has been a little crazy for me so far.   BLERGH that is a very strange coincidence! Friday will be my last evening in the country and if it so happens that we're able to meet up in the Botanical gardens that would be awesome.  I should be free that evening.

great, we will be a merry little tribe at least! can't say what the weather will be but if it's anything like today, how about this place as a plan B?

http://www.marlowesway.com/

i basically hate all bars in the CBD, but this one plays good music so it's tolerable. it's also tiny but I could get there around 4 to secure a spot -- it's down a little laneway off bridge st and pitt st.

But assuming it's nice and sunny, want to meet at the Palace Garden Gate? Those are the ones off Macquarie St, around 141 Macquarie St according to Google.

huzzah -- johnners and I broke the curse of this thread and actually MET UP on friday -- it was fun! wern55, fellow countryman, sorry you couldn't join us, but hope you had safe travels back to MN.

among many MMM topics, johnners and i talked a bit about the difficulty of socializing in sydney on the cheap, and had the bright idea of trying to organize a weekend BBQ sometime in the next few months. despite having lived in australia for 2 years I still haven't grilled ANYTHING outdoors so i am very into this idea. we've broken the seal, i see bright things ahead! anyone else interested? once we plot our locations, perhaps we can find a place roughly in the middle to share the travel burden. i'm in the eastern suburbs.

I'm south right out of  Sydney. I'm not likely to drive into the CBD at night for a quick drink in a bar, no parking etc etc. A barbie in the daytime would make the trip more worthwhile. If its somewhere accessible by train, I'll probably do that, otherwise drive.  Same deal as the Canberra meet up - because I have quite a bit of travel time, it would turn into a bit of a day trip, so I'm a bit less available.

:) I don't think Sydney has ever pretended to be anything other than a non-mustache city.

I nearly fell of my chair! So true ... I am seriously struggling with the economics of this city....

Really? Apart from rent/mortgage Sydney doesn't seem that bad to me :S
Some background, I am from Perth, aside from rent my next biggest line items in my budget are transport and going out. Sydney has much more usable transit than Perth (and a max spend of $60/week) so car ownership isn't really needed. Taxis are also not needed...Big Saving right there. Going out is cheap - loads of live music events without cover charges, $4 beers (more like $10 here), free events to attract the tourists, cheap coffees, lots of nice hikes etc accessible by public transit on the newcastle and Woolongong lines.
I'm also a single young professional, so my Sydney friends are all "poor" due to high rent, whereas my Perth friends are "cashed up bogans" [Slang for unqualified people making huge money in the mining industry]. As a result Sydney-siders appear to be so much more frugal in their entertainment choices which would make things easier.
And then this is the kicker, while rent in Sydney is stupid, mortgages are not so bad if you want a very small apartment. Perth has limited stock of very small (studio) apartments, and they aren't all that cheap. If you want to be in a cool, walkable neighborhood, you have only a handful to choose from and they are not cheap and the price for a studio is almost as much as the Sydney prices. And if you end up living in a studio you can't buy much stuff... You may also have a gym/pool on site, so you wouldn't pay or this stuff separately.
Assuming you fit the young and single demographic, life in Sydney could be cheaper than life in Perth. And certainly more fun!
However for families that want a house with land and a car, Sydney is an expensive place to have those things.
Also for renters, rents are crazy, so for anyone who can't afford to buy Sydney is expensive. (In comparison yeilds in Perth are low, so renting is more affordable.)

Can you tell I've thought this out? Looking to make the move soon! Hope to catch you all at a meet-up sometime soon.

hey there Melody, looking forward to see you in our fair city :)

Agree with you a good night out can be had pretty cheaply wherever you go.

I will try and live near work, but hope to work in the city. Darlinghurst, chippendale and redfern would be  my areas of choice. But anywhere in the city or inner west would be cool :-) but if the job is further out i will reassess. Hoping to join family and friends in sydney and have some new experiences  :-)

Not sure if a Sydney meet up ever got off the ground but I'd love to come along if another one happens! :)

Glad you guys managed to meet up. Good idea for BBQ of some sort. I need to figure out how to make this thread email me so I don't miss pending plans.

Melody - great take on keeping a bright outlook! However remember you probably won't be young and single forever. I've not lived in any other Australian cities so hard to compare ... BUT unless you live within biking distance of CBD Sydney is a not very Mustachian.

Consider the sprawl ... Move to the suburbs and commute for a LONG time in the car or train if you can afford the train line suburbs. But the outer suburbs don't get very much cheaper for rent or purchase prices. So you pay twice - with the housing coat and the loss of life hours to the commute.

They are ripping UP the bike lanes in the city (did that really happen? Or did sense prevail?)

Want to go to the beach? Get in the car for an hour. Want to go to a sporting event? Another hour. Live near the beach but want to see the Symphony? Perhaps another hour. Urban sprawl without rival (er except maybe LA ... I've lived there too ugh... I know Perth is a sprawl too but I don't think it compares).

Think public school is fine for your kids? Well think again "everyone" chooses private school ;) ... Or at least sometimes it feels that way.

Think your old hatchback is cool? No way ... You need an SUV or you won't fit in.

HOWEVER Sydney has awesome stuff ... A zoo with the best view ever. Beaches that defy description. Majestic mountains nearby. So somehow we all decide it's better to stay.

Best way for Sydney to be Mustachian is to work in your suburb or telecommute :)

Ok I didn't mean to vent. But this is how I see things in Sydney. It's a love/hate thing :)

The problem with Sydney seems to be that so much of the work is in the outer suburbs (Paramatta, Campbelltown etc) where I wouldn't want to live, but doing a reverse flow commute seems even crazier!!!! Expensive rent + commute. I have been applying for stuff in Sydney, but also now Newcastle and Melbourne. I feel very ready for a change, Sydney would be my first choice but the lack of work in the CBD is a problem. (I'm an accountant in a heavy industry, in Perth, most companies will have an office in the CBD or an inner suburb and a facility in an industrial area, in Sydney it seems the office is just lumped in with the facility.) Still I applied for something cool in North Sydney yesterday so there is hope :-)

In Canberra, we are meeting up at a variety of places North, South, East, West (we haven't yet really been North), so that everyone can get to something. Just do it (preferably at a time that I can come from Canberra)!

Maybe you need to work out what is easiest for everyone, or somewhere people would like to actually go out of their way to see (like Lithgow so they can look at the Blue Mountains, or Bondi, so they can go to the beach, or the bottom of the bridge so they can go on the cheap bridge walk).

I know that at least two of you live in the south. Why not a Sydney poll - where do I live - broken up into the major areas? If someone says what they are, I could set up the poll.

As the thread has already been disrupted, thought I might chime in.  I grew up in Newcastle, spent a year in randwick (on a military base), then a year in Bondi in a furnished apartment, I then lived in Darwin for 12 months, back to Sydney where I lived in an apartment in Guildford for 12 months, then a house in Holsworthy (next to liverpool) for two years, then a year in an apartment in Chatswood whilst I worked at South Head, Watson, then an apartment in Darwin for two years, then an apartment in Teneriffe, Brisbane for 6 months, then a yacht at a marina in Scarborough, Brisbane for 6months, then Darwin (on a military base) for 12 months, and I am now praying to all the gods that I get posted to Holsworthy in January so I can live in an apartment again.

I figure Sydney is fair to middle on the expensive scale and it all comes down to your choices.  As ERE lists it your first 3 concerns are - housing, Transport and work.

I have lived on all three sides of Sydney and worked on the south and in the middle.  I found that if I wanted to go out I could catch a train no probs  -tho whilst living in Chatswood we did have the saying "oh thats OTB, no thanks (over the bridge)"  Otherwise, I am an avid hiker and spent most weekends in the blue mountains.  I found living in south / west of Sydney was better for this but then its all connected by motorways and train lines.  If I get back to Sydney in January 2016, i intend to live in a new apartment in Liverpool, due to the closeness, to work + plus the accessibility of the city  and the blue mountains by train.  I tend to find the general cost of an apartment in Sydney is $500 / week rent (which is what the Defence force assesses as the average for our rental subsidy)

Otherwise i would like to see a list of Australian Capital Cities by cost IAW forum users opinions

Darwin Cetainly needs to be at the head of the list as the most expensive whilst Brisbane and Sydney are about equal these days

Darwin, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart.

I mean, the price of coffee in Perth says it all really.

I would still like to do a meetup, holding out for that mythical under 30's crowd that seems to be hiding under a rock...

Steak & beer anyone???

You forgot CANBERRA!!!

The under 30's crowd... check out Bondi (I don't think there are many rocks there) - or at least not as many as elsewhere in Sydney.

Ah well yeah..erm...Canberra...sorry :)

Build a wall around the place, lock the pollies in and throw away the key. Problem solved.

Probably fits in somewhere between Melbourne and Brisbane I'd say, depending on which end of town?
Title: Re: Sydney meetup
Post by: deborah on April 04, 2015, 05:56:26 AM
Canberra is a bit of an enigma - houses are expensive because we are part of the Sydney market (anyone who wants to invest in Sydney but hasn't quite got the money, invests in Canberra), but I think our coffee is probably somewhat cheaper (don't drink coffee and MMM is against you buying coffee anyway!). It's probably too big and too hilly to build a wall around.
Title: Re: Sydney meetup
Post by: agent_clone on April 05, 2015, 03:12:32 AM
In terms of housing I personally woud put Canberra somewhere between Sydney and Melbourne.  Canberra may not have the High's of the Melbourne property market, but it also doesn't have the lows.  Until the last year or so there wasn't much under the price of $300k in Canberra (now there are a number of new 1br (and sometimes 2br) apartments in Franklin and Harrison).  Rental wise you were looking at, at least $300pw, whereas when I was looking at Melbourne there were places cheaper than that...
This may have changed a bit in the last year or so though with the public servants losing their jobs and the property going down a bit...
Canberra has the transience issue that Darwin does, which inflates prices somewhat.
Title: Re: Sydney meetup
Post by: Melody on April 05, 2015, 07:54:00 AM
Perth isnt that expensive  because you get perth wages (higher) unless you want to buy. Rental yeilds are very low making it a good deal for the renter, but expensive for the purchaser. A 3 bedroom house  in a bikeabke to the cbd location can be easily found for under $450 a week and at then end of the day that will impact mpst of us more  than the price of coffee (which seems to have dropped with increased competition. .. i only pay $3 at the place near  work).

Hello everybody,
Well, I was reading through the NZ Mustachians thread and somebody suggested a facebook group. I though, hey, that's a good idea, since we aren't having a huge amount of luck in actually having a physical meetup. So I've set up a facebook group, "Sydney Mustachians".

Please join! I'd love to have a community on there.
On the flip side, I have to say, in setting up the group I had to include a few facebook friends in order to have the group. Going through my friends list... I don't actually believe I have many Sydney Mustachian friends at all. Maybe cause Sydney is really expensive?

I've things going on right, left and centre atm cause a tenant is moving out, secured new tenant (yay!) who wants the place furnished so i'm crazy busy with this atm. With this, and throw in 2 other side jobs (volleyball manager and Airbnb host) I hardly have free time in May. June looks much better though. So I'd like to defer till June when craziness subsides...

Righto, I'm keen on adventurous activities, and get around without a car.  My professional job is interesting and challenging, but I'm not so keen on the time commitment.

Living frugally is quite satisfying, and my savings are pretty well settled.  The beauty of the mustache idea for me was in linking this relatively low cost / high experience lifestyle with the capacity for genuine financial independence.  I'm 32, am planning to be FI around 38-42, and just need to organise my investments to get there.

I'm interested in meeting other mustachians to see if they're similarly empowered.  What was your last meeting like?

Hi Dropbear [and any other potential lurkers] --

There is a Sydney Mustachians Meetup group that has been going for a little while: https://www.meetup.com/Sydney-Mustachians/

Some stuff happening the next few months:

October picnic: https://www.meetup.com/Sydney-Mustachians/events/234380479/

November wild food foraging workshop: https://www.meetup.com/Sydney-Mustachians/events/234381029/

The organizers don't post much to these forums, I think. Maybe we'll meet at one of the above!

October meetup report for Sydney Mustachians:

There were just four of us that ended up meeting on Saturday.

But the lack of numbers was compensated by the quality of the conversation!

We shared insights on investment strategies, long-term plans, FIRE predictions, rice cookers and travel.  There was a stark contrast between our interests and those of TAB punters a few metres away (we ended up in a pub due to concerns about weather).

Hopefully we'll have a much bigger turn-out at the next one - given we are talking about Australia's largest city you would think we could get a bit more interest.

If we were talking about a Sydney BMW owners get-together I think there would have been a much higher level of attendance!

That would be great!  Then we'd both be happy!

(I can't resist, your username is too fun.)

I am trying to work in a "NOT. HAPPY. JAN." joke into this little exchange but am having a little difficulty! It only works if someone is specifically not happy :D

ARS loves to bum around with my username - ( see what I did there? ;) ). What can I say but I'm happy whatever Jan does.

Hi all -- I've recently become one of the co-organizers for the Sydney Mustachians Meetup group (http://www.meetup.com/en-AU/Sydney-Mustachians/), and have been thinking about what to organize for January. (November's wild food foraging workshop was great, by the way -- learned heaps in just two hours and am already incorporating some tasty dandelion greens into my meals.)

Would people be interested in a 2017 kick-off picnic the weekend of 28 or 29 Jan?

I'm keen for a Sydney meetup early next year. A picnic sounds lovely!

If it was near central station (Hyde Park, Botanic Gardens?) or on the south side (Royal National Park?) I could come.

hi all -- another co-organizer beat me to it and just put together a meetup for saturday 14 jan for the sydney mustachians group:

https://www.meetup.com/Sydney-Mustachians/events/236351899/?eventId=236351899 (https://www.meetup.com/Sydney-Mustachians/events/236351899/?eventId=236351899)

"It is time for the Sydney Mustachians to get together once more, this time to celebrate the incoming year.

Let's spend a Saturday afternoon sharing stories, ideas and company in Sydney's lovely Prince Alfred Park . No rigid plans for this meetup, just BYO food, drink, blanket, activities, and/or entertainment.

Providing things to share is welcome, but definitely not required.

Friends, guests, kids, and family are welcome."

Hope some of you can come!

Saturday 25 Feb, 1PM onwards in Prince Alfred Park if the weather is good or Royal Exhibition Pub if the weather is bad.

I'm all for doing this once a month I think it's so important to push along our goals through like-minded community support and baddassity.

Looking forward to meeting more of you next time :)

The weather was bad but we didn't let that stop us. There was a pretty strong turnout and very diverse topics of discussion. A few mediocre pics taken by me on Saturday can be found on the Meetup.com event page (https://www.meetup.com/Sydney-Mustachians/events/236937795/) or the Facebook event page.

Next Sydney meetup organised:

If you're keen on following the meetups, it might be worth joining the Facebook group, since we may not be able to find anybody to continue funding Meetup at ~ $260 / year. Don't have a Facebook account? You could a single-purpose Facebook account with no personal details, just for this group.

There was some interest in a monthly mid-week evening meetup in the last meetup's RSVP responses. Anybody interested in trying to get that up and running? If not, I'll give it a shot next week.
Title: Re: Sydney meetup

I think it's very funny (and a little ironic) that the Sydney group - the last group to get their act together and actually HAVE meetups, even though they were one of the first to try to get a meetup happening - has commandeered the name "Australian" Mustashians on Facebook (especially as they already had a "Sydney" mustashians facebook group)! And that they don't use the meetups thread in the forum to have meetings (as someone who came from Melbourne, I am trying hard not to consider this "typical Sydney behaviour"), and always tell anyone in the forum a very short time before the meetups, when we probably already have something planned. And that the very people who tried so hard at the beginning to get the Sydney people together are not going to the Sydney meetups.

I would dearly like to come to a meetup (being a meetup junkie), but I don't do facebook (you weren't allowed to be on facebook where I worked, and I haven't since I retired).

Title: Re: Sydney meetup

deborah, if you can't offer your criticism in a constructive manner then I'm afraid I will have to dismiss it as a complainypants tantrum.

I mean, honestly, after coming to the Sydney Meetup thread and then bagging out the thread and its participants, what kind of response do you expect other than a dismissive one?
Title: Re: Sydney meetup
Post by: deborah on March 03, 2017, 01:12:49 PM
Sorry, I thought it was funny, so I said it was - definitely not meant to be complainypants! I am REALLY REALLY glad that you guys have you act together now and there are more Australian meetups.

And it's my choice not to be on FB. This occasionally leads to problems. But, because of my background I really am very reluctant to join it.

Deborah... Even thought the time and place is inconvenient for me I can see that Tim and the others do their best to cater for everyone. I don't mind missing out ... I have one mustachio friend here I meet for lunch or drinks regularly. The point of it isn't really to talk mustachey things though.

I think you need to watch Frozen.

It went well! Smaller numbers than last time, but it went well. We had 4 newcomers (1 an infant, however) and 8 or so returning Sydney Mustachians. Some photos are posted on the event pages.

Don't be shy! Most of us went for the first time without knowing anybody. Try to remember that we are "your people". It's very likely that we'll have a lot in common and that we'll be able to get along.

Marty998, if you pluck up the courage I might even get motivated to drive up to meet you. At my first meet up, I have a moment of truth when I realised I had to walk up to a group of perfect strangers and say "Hi, I'm happy".  And hope like hell they were the right group.  ( they were). I still got all klutzy and spilled my coffee.

Making a single purpose Facebook account is an idea, thanks Tim. I prefer to keep my forum handle/identity not directly linked to my Facebook account. I know, I know clever evil people can work out everything about me when I post, but I'd rather not make it too easy.

I usually travel down to Canberra meet ups, although Sydney is theoretically closer ( just more hassle with transport, traffic, parking etc)....I've been thinking about coming to one, but thus far the timing hasn't worked out.

NEW MEETUP (MID-WEEK EDITION)

When: 6PM, Wed 25 Oct, 2017
Where: My workplace, near Martin Place / Wynyard (further details upon RSVP)
RSVP: Please email, call, or SMS - email@timcinel.com / 0400 884 564

Back when I organised the Sydney meetup, some of the Sydney attendees expressed interest in a mid-week meetup. I'm in Sydney next week, so ... here goes nothing!

This will be hosted after hours at my workplace on Martin Place. We have plenty of space, board games and limited refreshments will be available.

If this works out well, I'd be happy to organise one of these every couple of months.

Hey everyone,

I am new to this forum (some of you might have seen me on ERE) and have registered here exactly to find some like minded folks here in Sydney. Won't be able to join this meetup unfortunately but will be on the lookout for future ones.

Thanks Tim for organising this next meetup on Thursday!

These gatherings are relaxed sessions with great people, so I'll echo Tim's welcome to anyone new who would like to come :)

Looks like there is another Sydney Mustachian group that has popped up on Facebook. I list their meetups and others around Australian on a regular enews if anyone's interested.
