I'm living on the Peninsula, anyone else living around here?
-
San Jose in the house.
-
Have you been able to find a decent price on an apartment/house? Pretty tough in this area in my experience. We found the cheapest place we could but it's still way too big a chunk of the paycheck
-
SF - has there been a meetup?
-
North Oakland reporting in.
-
San Pablo (tiny city within Richmond)
Lived in Oakland until last year. I consider everything between Pinole and Oakland "home"
-
San Jose here.
-
Sunnyvale here.
-
San Francisco, Lower Haight.
I'd be really into hosting a meetup if there's interest. However, it seems like critical mass is in the south bay.

Unless you're looking for a room in a house with roommates, the market is not worth making long term commitments in. If i was looking for housing, I would wait it out in the smallest place i could stand until social media has a bad day.
-
san jose here too

Downtown Oakland living, SF working.

Hey everybody! Kisserofsinners and I are meeting up next Sunday, the 13th, in SF and I wanted to open it up to anybody who wants to join! I know a lot of you guys are in South Bay/East Bay, but if you wanna make the trek out here, comment below or PM me, and I can send you the details! :) Hopefully we'll get a chance to meet!

SMART I was just about to do this. :) Well played.
-
How did the meetup go? We'll soon be in the Sonoma area. I just took a new job, moving from Central Indiana to Sonoma in February 2013...whew. Sticker shock is still hitting me on housing prices. Hopefully there will be another meetup at some point in the future when we are out there, and I can meet some of you!
-
Wanted to go, but had to work :-( Anyone want to try for a redo?
-
I am in SF too (SoMa).
-
It was great meeting kisserofsinners! :) We met at Philz Coffee and got to chat. I brought a friend along who is new to personal finance, and it was fun! We should definitely do another meet up. John, where in SoMa are you? I work on the edge of FiDi and SoMa.

That's right near my office.
I had a great time meeting and hanging out with nofool and her friend. It's relaxing to just feel comfortable geeking out about this stuff. I can assure you my friends are done listening and i'm not done talking yet. :) I'd love to do it again.
-
I'd love to do it again.
Send me a PM if you do.
I get email notifications of them, but not for forum updates, and I don't always check here regularly
I would have gone last time, but it happened to be my Coast Guard drill weekend

New to the community, but I live in Daly City and work in the financial district. It looks like I'll only be in the area for another few months (will likely be relocating to Las Vegas for work), but I'd love to join a meetup if there's another local one before I go!
-
We can keep it monthlyish.
I liked meeting on Sunday as it was convenient for me, but i'm open to evenings also Mondays and Thursdays. The month of Feb is pretty dense with birthdays I've only got the 17th and 24th left available.
If it's nice we can picnic in Dolorous Park.
-
A lot of people seem to work downtown. Weekday evening would be good for me

Downtown after work also works. I have time Mondays and Thursdays most weeks.
-
Pretty much every evening except Tuesdays work for me.
-
is anyone in san jose / south bay willing to meet up?
i am brand new to this site and love it already. can't wait to apply mustachian princhiples...
-
Moved to Berkeley recently. It would be nice to meet fellow Mustachians.
-
Live in Hayes Valley (SF) in a 400 square foot studio with my BF.
-
Planning for SF propper. PM if you'd like to be a part of choosing where and when.
-
Another vote for downtown SF. Cheers!
-
PM Sent.
Any day but Tuesdays, and the 2nd weekend each month, works for me, given enough advanced notice.
But if its in the city, hopefully as close as possible to BART (and preferably one of the first few stops)
-
Currently looking at near downtown, BART station most likely Montgomery or Embarcadero. This will likely be a bar stop as i don't think there's any parks or public areas to hang out, maybe House of Shields or Dave's Bar but i'll do a little legwork to find a happy hour if it's to be had.
Most likely, Monday or Thursday. I'm gonna give it a day or two before a final call is made.
Come out and play!
Peace
-
The Yerba Buena Gardens are near the Montgomery station in case you guys want a park.

The Yerba Buena Gardens works and one of the easier places to find people is infront of the Martin Lurther King Jr wall. As a backup if the weather does not hold we can easily move to meeting indoors to the Food Court seated area in the former Metreon (now Target & AMC Building) too.
Generally Mondays and/or Thursday work best as long with advanced notice. Thanks.

San Jose here!
-
Hey,
I hope you don't mind me injecting into this thread:
I'd like to get thoughts from people here who live/work in the Silicon Valley area (Santa Clara, San Jose, etc). How do you deal with what seems like the high costs of housing, and around what salary range does the trade off become worth it? Also do you find it reasonable living close to work, or do you end up with a long commute (ie. from San Francisco?)
-
CanuckExpat- Are you considering relocation to this area? Housing costs are definitely outrageous, and have been going up again significantly since the start of 2013. (At least as far as purchasing goes; I have been fortunate to have fairly "cheap" rent that has not gone up too much over the years, but I suspect the crazy housing market will lead to overall rent increases as well, if it has not already). If you were hoping to buy, be aware anything under 600-700K (and sometimes even over, especially if it's a good school district) tends to go to a cash buyer. And cash or not, homes are averaging about 10-20+ offers, and generally sell quite far above list price.
Commute will depend a lot on where you're thinking of working. Santa Clara/San Jose tends to be much cheaper to live than further North up the peninsula and into SF. Everything within short commute of Google/Facebook etc is crazy expensive since those employees (and all the venture capitalists funding the startups) are willing and presumably able to pay it. I currently commute about 8 miles from Sunnyvale to Palo Alto, can take up to 30-45 minutes depending on traffic and how badly the streetlights are timed that day. Some public transit options available, and do see a fair amount of bikers out although the bay area could definitely use better bike-friendliness.
Hard to comment on what salary is worth it, although I ran it through this calculator:
http://www.bestplaces.net/cost-of-living/
With the default setting of $50K salary in Baltimore, says you'd need ~$93K in San Jose for equivalent standard of living. Not sure how accurate that is, but I can say almost everyone in non-computer industries around here feels the squeeze. My husband and I frequently talk about getting out of here for somewhere more affordable. If it wasn't for family in and fairly close to the area, we would be much more inclined to leave. That being said, this can be a really nice place to live too, just not necessarily so much nicer than everywhere else to justify the prices.
Sorry, I'm not sure how helpful this is... overall I'd say you should do a lot of research before moving here if you're hoping to live the MMM way!! Not impossible to save up money here, but you likely won't get there as fast as you would living somewhere else.
-
KS, thanks for the input. Unless something changed, it looks likely that my wife and I are will be relocating to the area. We should both have good paying jobs (good for any other area, maybe not great for this particular area) and it's nice to get the input on this board, as other places you start to see sill stuff like "you can't survive on $150k in Silicon Valley", etc.
We are happy renting, and have no need to purchase unless it makes financial sense (and we decide we aren't going to move again soon). To a first approximation, I figured that if we had to pay an extra $1500/month in rent, that would be offset as long as the offers we are considering pay at least $36k/year more than other locations (ignoring other factors).
I'll probably have more questions as this develops, and I'll either post here or start a new thread if I feel like I'm thread jacking (though it is nice to have so many local experts see this).
Once the jobs are confirmed, we will have to decide exact location. It looks like she will be working in San Francisco itself, but with a lot of travelling and maybe working from home options, where as I will be in Santa Clara, without working from home option. It would be nice to figure out a location that minimizes commuting time for us both as much as possible.
-
How about a meetup for Mustachians in the south bay? My wife and I just relocated to Cupertino from Eugene, OR and would love to meet some likeminded folks and get some tips on staying on track in such a high-cost area. Any ideas on places/times from someone who's been here a bit longer?
-
Glad to help Canuck! Good luck with the relocation and definitely post if and when you have more questions... I'm pretty sure there are a decent amount of Bay Area folks in the forums, so you should be hopefully be able to get some helpful info out of us. :)
Bikes- I'm south bay too and I think there are some others in the forums, seems like so far all the meetups have been in SF though. Would be interesting to see if enough people would come out of the woodworks for a south bay meetup. I've got a bit of a case of introvert-itis on top of somewhat long work hours, but will try and fight that and maybe attend if something comes together!
-
I'm in the Bay Area for work until the end of September. If there's anyone interested in meeting up I'm down.
-
Hi all,
I'm from South Bay too... near downtown San Jose. I'm DEFINITELY interested in a meet up down here rather than in SF... is it just me that thinks travelling all the way up there is completely unmustachian? I can't remember the last time I went further north than Mountain View :-)
Anyway, how about we try to meet up at the Italian Family Festa on either Sat 24th August or Sun 25th? The festival is at Guadalupe Gardens (right alongside the Guadalupe Bike Trail; not far from Diridon Station).
Free admission. Live entertainment. Picnic style setting (byo blanket or chair). No bottles, cans, or coolers allowed, but you can bring your own food in if you don't want to pay festival prices.
More info here http://www.italianfamilyfestasj.org/
Anyone interested?

Sounds like a plan to me! Wife and I can bike over from Cupertino. To keep the ball rolling I'll propose a meetup at noon on Sat the 24th. I'm not familiar with the park, but on Google Maps satellite view there seems to be a circular feature (fountain?) just south of Julian St. We can try to meet up there? I'm open to other times/places if those don't work, but I wanted to propose something that others can accept or modify.

Haha, touche! I guess what I was meaning is that we should do individual meet ups for the different areas of the Bay. Not suggesting that you SF'ers bike all the way down here just to meet us South Bay'ers!

Definitely should diversify the meetups. iSight attend a South Bay meetup if I have another excuse to go down there

Hello,
We live in Redwood City. We're a couple with a 9 month old son. Would be great to meet up.
-
I'm a little late to the party, but SF here.
-
We're located in Palo Alto / Menlo Park and would be interested in meeting up!
-
Santa Cruz
(but my work sometimes takes me into the South Bay/Peninsula)
-
Hello, I live in San Bruno, work in Palo Alto. Will be glad to see fellow mustachians someday.
-
What, no North Bay peeps? I'm hoping to find some Mustachians to hang with in Marin, or somewhere a little north. I'm in San Rafael, and commute into the city (it's an awesome ferry ride!), and my woman works in Napa. Anyone close to San Rafael, or Novato/Petaluma?
Feel free to message me, or we can start a new thread, if there's anyone up here with me....
-
Finally did that relocation I was asking about, and relatively settled in. If we can get another South Bay meet-up, I'd be game. I'd also make the trek up to San Francisco if the logistics were right.
-
South Bay! I'd be in for a meet-up
Maybe after Thanksgiving and before it's the full-blown "Holiday Season", anyone else interested?

Count me in, too! I would propose next weekend, but I have family in town. The following weekend is the weekend before Xmas, may be tough for some people.
How about Saturday, January 11th? I am thinking we can meet somewhere nearby to either the Mountain View or Palo Alto caltrain stops, for maximum accessibility for South Bay mustaches.
With that in mind, any suggestions for venues? There is a nice coffee shop in downtown Mountain View called Red Rock, with ample seating. Another option might be the Mountain View library. Happy to try other places, but I'm only familiar with MtView.
-
I can't imagine a better place than Red Rock. It's as discordant with Castro St as mustachianism is with the Silicon Valley.

Kudos for helping materialize this! But can we push it back just a bit to the following weekend?
-
Ok, let's do Saturday, January 18th at Red Rock at 2pm. Anyone know how to start a poll for RSVPs to get a feel for the group size? PM me if you plan to attend, and I will PM you back with my contact info. Cheers!

I'm game for Jan 18th at Red Rock at 2PM. I've never been before.
I'm glad somebody picked up the ball on organizing this, I dissapeared into the Thanksgiving/X-Mas travelling fun..

Maybe someone could do a Google Calendar Invite? Or something? It sounds fun though. I know my husband and I would like to meet other stachios.
-
I don't know my plans for that day yet but if I can make it, this sounds fun! I don't know the best way to track RSVPs... I think I've seen in other cases for other cities they started a separate thread for the event once date and time were set?

I'm in Berkeley. Would love to brainstorm with other mustache's. -Kate
-
Anyone in the eastbay interested in a meetup? I would be happy to arrange a place/time in Berkeley at for coffee or drinks.
-
Hey team, just joined the forum (First Post!!!) and also new to the bay area. My girlfriend and I live in downtown Oakland, and I'm totally down to meet up with folks. I'm out of town this weekend but should be free to meet up next weekend.
meteor, let me know when/where you're interested in meeting up.
-
I just joined the forum, will post a proper intro later. Living in SF in North Beach. Would be interested in any meetups in the vicinity.
-
genselecus and f33sh
That's great -- What times/days are the best for you? Weekdays, evenings, weekends?
-
I'm in SF and would be open to meet-up in Berkeley. I have a pretty flexible work schedule so I'm open anytime, however I would like to avoid rush hour on the Bay Bridge as much as possible.
-
Weekends are usually the best for me, as I often travel for work. What about next weekend, on Saturday, 2/22? I'm not picky where we meet; I have a bike, car, and BART card.

The 22nd sounds great.
I two suggestions walkable from BART:
We could do
-a mushtarian cafe/sandwich place like Aucoquelet maybe late morning or afternoon (2000 University Avenue http://www.aucoquelet.com/)
-Or a high end cocktail bar at Revival late afternoon ( 2102 Shattuck Ave http://revivalbarandkitchen.com/)
Any preference?
Kate
-
I'd be in for the 22nd, would prefer sandwich/cafe type place mid-day.
-
I'm in for the 22nd, i vote for the sandwich place as well. Just let me know the time.
-
Here is the meeting time and place:
DATE: Saturday, February 22nd
TIME: 2:00
PLACE: Au Coquelet, Berkeley. ( 2000 University Avenue http://www.aucoquelet.com/ ) You can walk from BART.
*Please Note: There are 2 rooms in this cafe *Go to the back room*. Look for a table with a blue bike helmet.
-
Thanks for organizing, Kate. I look forward to meeting everyone on Saturday!

genselecus
mxt0133
f33sh
Just a reminder, there are 2 rooms in this cafe *Go to the back room*. Look for a table with a blue bike helmet.
Time Saturday, 2/22 at 2:00.
Nothing like numbers 2/22/2:00 at 2000 University. That is easy to remember!
-
Sounds good, I will be there
-
Im going to try to attend in Berkeley - it depends on what else happens that day.

Ditto.

Great meet-up in Berkeley today! It was good to put a few faces to the screen names. I didn't think we would talk about so many interesting topics that were not already covered in these forums but I was wrong. I want to thank everyone for sharing your points of views and experiences.

Great meeting you all! I'm still confused who is who by the user names here. I think we had a great mix of people from all different experiences and perspectives. I appreciate the SFers who made the trip across the bay. I won't use real names here but say I'm the Berkeley resident (I think we had Oakland, China Basin, Northbeach and Inner Sunset (n judah?).
-
Anyone up in the Marin/Sonoma county area? I looked through this thread and the Berkeley thread and it seems that everyone is East or South of the Golden Gate Bridge.
-
Po' Hill... checking you out...
-
Hi all,
I'm in SF (sunset) myself. Sounds like you all had a fun meetup.
-
My wife and I (and baby son) are in the East East Bay (Walnut Creek). We feel like our city is a living anti-mustachian wall of shame. Any other mustaches out here?
-

I was living out in Walnut Creek when I was in the Bay Area. It is a living anti-mustachian wall of shame. My favorite tidbit of WC insanity is that the creek from which the town gets its name has been totally paved over and now emerges into daylight at the edge of town right next to Maria Maria on Broadway. I'm glad to be out of there. Keep strong!
-
hey I am from east bay, and work in SF. Any future meetup planned ?
-
I am also in the East Bay, in San Leandro, commuting to SF for work. So I can meet in the city M-F evenings.
-
Hey all! I'm on the peninsula. Looking forward to the next meet up.
-
If anyone wants a meetup, just pick a time and place. There is no official meetup coordinator
-
Hi all
I live and work in San Francisco. Like a few others, Sunset district N Judah.
-
SF, Richmond District here. Definitely up for meeting with local Mustachians.
-
Agreed. It seems like there could be a meetup in the South Bay, SF, and East Bay.
-
I think there is enough interest in a SF meetup. I propose West bluff picnic area, Long Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94129 by Crissy Fields on May 31st say 10 am. There are picnic tables and grills there so we can BBQ. I can get there a little early to get a table with a grill.
We can do pot luck. Once we confirm who's attending we can organize who can bring what.

Way to be proactive, mxt0133! Unfortunately I have to be at a graduation from morning to early afternoon that day. Will not like missing it. If a good amount of people can't make it, how does the following Saturday 6/7 look?
-
Check the latest MMM post re: 5/23 at Heron's Head Park in SF.
Unfortunately, this is a little far for me in Santa Cruz, particularly since I don't have any other plans in the City that weekend.
-
Am going on Friday 5/23. Hope to see other Bay Area 'staches there!
-
@micheal - Thanks, I almost missed that post. See everyone there. I'm pretty excited to meet the MMM family, they're practically royalty in my book!
-
Unfortunately, this is a little far for me in Santa Cruz, particularly since I don't have any other plans in the City that weekend.
agreed! I'm still considering it but by the time I trek up there after work I think it might be almost over anyway... South Bay folks are you game for another meetup in the next couple months? I just realized how long it's been since the last one! And anybody who makes it up to SF this Friday can fill the rest of us in on how it went. :)
-

See you all there this Friday! He mentioned it's right near Speakeasy Brewery. Never been there myself but love the beer, so will definitely be wandering over there at some point

Attended the meet up last night and was pleasantly surprised to see so many people pursuing Financial Freedom through Badassity.
Was impressed by Evan who retired from corporate life at 28. Intrigued by Ben and his goal of retiring in 5 years. Welcomed by KJ and Michael in a very warm way.
Alamedagal and I had a great time and are interested in future meet-ups in the Bay Area, especially the East Bay.

It was a pleasure meeing everyone yesterday. So many stories so little time! Looking forward to meeting more local mustachians at future meetings. :)
Wish I knew more people were attending since I brought a small cake to welcome Mr. Mustache. Next time!

That was you, eh?
Thanks!!! It was amazingly delicious!!!

At the meeting on Friday, someone collected (perhaps) 50-75 email addresses into a list. I have a server that can be used to host a Bay Area Mustachian listserv if the holder of the email addresses is interested.
(I realize that there is a google group, but I don't believe that the contact list could be added there; people would have to start over again.)

@ Bakari: Cool indeed! Glad the cake was enjoyed. We really needed more name tags by the end it was like playing pictionary. :)
-
agreed! I'm still considering it but by the time I trek up there after work I think it might be almost over anyway... South Bay folks are you game for another meetup in the next couple months? I just realized how long it's been since the last one! And anybody who makes it up to SF this Friday can fill the rest of us in on how it went. :)
Yes, I'm interested in a South Bay meet up!

Yes, I think we should do another South Bay meet-up as well. (The SF one was a bit out of the way and we already had plans to camp elsewhere that night).
Any one have suggestions for a date? After, or during the long-weekend perhaps?
-
A South Bay meet up or even one in midway in the penninsula might be a good location compromise. How do others feel about Millbrae, San Mateo or Redwood City? Any other ideas?

The country hippie contingent (town of Fairfax in Marin county) reporting for duty!
Good to be here.

Mid-Pennisula sounds great to me!

Hello fellow Bayesians! (I may not be from around here)
After the meetup in Heron's Head Park last month (http://www.andhigherstill.com/2014/06/an-evening-with-mustachians.html), we decided it would be worthwhile to organize additional meetups under the Bay Area Mighty Mustachian Meetup (BAMMM) banner.
To facilitate this, we assembled a contact spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Jd45RCxDQSVJbJb_zbe_aq3morJVlUqmCSMFxZa0Rhc/edit#gid=0), a Google Group email list (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/bay-area-mustachians), and a Google+ Community (https://plus.google.com/communities/109606181421765828312). All should be publicly joinable!
We're having a little meetup in Dolores Park on Saturday afternoon, described in more detail in the Group and Community. All are welcome—if you know anyone else who might be interested, forward this along!

Wow, that group looks way larger than I had imagined

That little crowd? That was way before things got rolling—MMM had just arrived!
People were coming and going, but I collected 85 email addressed and I'd estimate the total turnout at around 100:

I hope to see more of you at the next one somewhere else in the Bay Area. If you have ideas about what to do or where to meet, send them out on the email list (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/bay-area-mustachians)!

Any upcoming plans for another meet-up? I've yet to meet some fellow Mustachians IRL, but am dying to. :-)

Me too me too. I'm an MMM newbie and I'd really like to meet you all. Just added myself to the G+ community and group mailing list linked above.
-
Hey, yall remember when MMM came to SF, and we all met up at a park?
I met this one guy there, and we started going on bike rides together once a week, and then he introduced me to his roommate, and then she and I started dating, and now its getting kinda all serious and stuff, and so, like, thanks MMM community, for being a part of making that happen!

So the last meetup was in SF - before I was a Mustachian. I'd like to see one in the South Bay. Anyone interested? (Not sure if I should start a new thread, or if this one is appropriate).

This thread should be a good place to start I think. The last time some of us got together down this way the idea started here and then moved to its own thread once it got to the logistics/rough headcount stages. Lots of people (including me) have mentioned interest in a South Bay meetup, but so far nobody has suggested a date/location yet. Maybe you will be the brave non-introvert to take charge! Been considering stepping in and suggesting something myself but I haven't had time and I'm going to be on vacation for much of September so I was waiting at least until I get back.

Heh, I was on vacation for much of August. And INTJ here, though I might get desperate enough to lead if no one else will.
-
I'll go to a south bay meetup (or a general bay area meetup). I live in Mountain View so meeting here or in Palo Alto would be nice.
What do we want to do? If people like going on walks we could meet near the Stanford Dish or the Bay Trail.

I'm always down for walking. I'm over in SJ near the airport, but can definitely make it over to PA if need be.

Ok guys, South Bay meetup September 7 at noon:
43rd Mountain View Art & Wine Festival
This year's festival in downtown Mountain View will feature around 600 artists, live music, a premium wine tasting tent, a football viewing area, microbrews, sangria and an area for kids. Sept. 6 and 7, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Free. Downtown Mountain View, 400 Castro St., Mountain View.
Of course I won't be there but I'm happy to suggest a time and place :-)

the 2 times I took the real test (once in high school and once as a team building thing at a job) I came up ENFP, which does mostly fit but I'm still pretty introverted for an "extrovert"!

That's a good suggestion! Forgot I'd seen the banners for that last weekend... probably since I'll be gone then, bummer! Usually a good opportunity to get outside, people watch, and check out some random stuff you probably won't buy. :)

Will have to miss this one. Hope it is fun!

How many people make the Art & Wine Festival? We can pick a date further out if that makes things easier.
Also, are any south bay people looking for roommates? I want to get out of my one bedroom when the lease is up.

Yeah, I can't make the festival. Also hoping for something a bit closer to SJ, but if there'll be a number of people I would be willing to go further.
Also, I'm potentially looking for a roommate, but my lease isn't up until February. I'm currently in a small studio, but I'm considering renting a room or something to go cheaper - not sure what that would be (I'm leaning more ERE these days as far as rent). Currently working near the SJ airport.
-
I'm in for a SJ meet-up. Guadalupe River park near the San Jose Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Santa Clara has picnic tables. It's also near the Diridion station.
Sounds great! I'd love to cook something and bring it to a MMM meetup for everyone to share. :-)
-
I can bike to that. When? October 18th seems sufficiently far in the future for people to plan around.*
* Also I'll be out of town for the first two weeks of October so we can't do it then :P
-
Do we have an official headcount for the proposed SJ meetup? Thanks!
-
I'd love to come. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town on October 18th.
-
I can definitely come to the SJ meetup. I can also probably get a Mustachian friend from another forum (doesn't post here) to come, and perhaps a different friend as well. Flexible with dates - let me know!
-
Hello, I moved to the Bay Area (Sunnyvale) last month and it would be great to meet some fellow Mustachians. The October 18th meetup works for me.
-
It sounds like we have 5-6 people. When we finalize the details we'll probably get more.
Place: Guadalupe River park in SJ
Time: ???
I suggested the eighteenth kind of arbitrarily (it's the first weekend I'll be back after traveling). We can do it later if NoraLenderbee prefers. Does early afternoon (maybe 1 PM) sound good?

Fine with me, though if a different time works for people that's fine too!

Hi Pmallory,
I took the liberty of creating a seperate poll/thread (http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/index.php?topic=23841) to select the date and also count RSVP and meet-up specific discussion. I took your arbitrary date, and arbitrarily added the next two weekends as options as well.
Hope that works

Awesome, thanks for taking the initiative!

SF resident here. Can't make the South Bay meetup, but would love to meet up in the city with other folks at some point
-
Burlingame here. Lets meetup once the weather warm up.

I just bumped the old South Bay meetup thread. In case it turns into another meetup, I'm posting here for anyone who wasn't following that thread but might want to meet up somewhere south-ish:

What up SFers? Can we have a meet-up in SF city sometime ^_< South bay is so far...
-
The mustache google group is scheming on one in SF... I mentioned they should post about it here as well but maybe they're waiting until they pick a date?
-
Correct! We're still converging on a date. Fill out this form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1s5bBvBBFIigs-5OcxAGBVZb3sznFLazHu4Yf3f6mNdA/viewform) to indicate interest and availability!

Poll results (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1s5bBvBBFIigs-5OcxAGBVZb3sznFLazHu4Yf3f6mNdA/viewanalytics) for this weekend: 22 for Saturday, 20 for Sunday. My girlfriend and I will be in the Marx Meadow picnic area in Golden Gate Park tomorrow at 2pm (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Marx+Meadow/@37.7706709,-122.4857416,16z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0xc58e7cca652a1c71). I'll be available at 424-243-6344 and also switch on the Republic Wireless 3G. Non-glass alcohol is permitted there, and we'll bring something to share :)
Topics suggested for discussion:
- The messed up Bay Area real estate economy (and potential for another crash)
- Bay Area-specific ways of saving
- Preventing bike theft
- Favorite finance books, blogs, wikis, &etc
- Philosophical disagreements with MMM
- DIY projects and skills and how you acquired them
- Cooking!
- Traveling for cheap
- Ideas for side income
- Expense and savings tracking tools
- Financing the time between retirement and Age 59.5
This has been cross-posted to the Bay Area Mighty Mustachians Meetup (BAMMM) list (https://groups.google.com/forum/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=footer#!msg/bay-area-mustachians/dnkk6XfKOA8/OaL-EW4HdmIJ), and several people have already confirmed they can make it (http://whenisgood.net/d7dh7wq/results/83ep3pi). Come on out and be social!
We can put something together for later in April too, perhaps in the East Bay!

We've been meaning to explore East Bay area, so this might be a good excuse to make the trek up there and make a day of it. You can count us tentatively in (2 and a half-ish people) .
-
Are these meetups non-hipster friendly? Can we meet at Brook's Brothers?
-
Posting to follow. I'd like to meet up!

I won't be able to make the May 2nd one. 2 birthday parties to attend. Until next time!

Lake Merrit!!
Why that's my neck of the woods
May 2nd!!!!
Why thats about the only day I have free for over a month!!!!!!!
It'd be fun to bring my partner - I met her indirectly though the last meet-up I went to (her roommate attended, we became friends, and then he set me up with her)
-
Let's do it! How about we meet under the arches on the west side of the Lake (near Embarcadero)?

Well, its close to home, and I have nothing else planned, so I'll head over to the lake either way
"under the arches on the west side of the Lake (near Embarcadero)" since that's what's already been suggested
-
My kids birthday is this weekend and we have something planned. Totally interested in the next one!
-
West side, arches, Embarcadero... Melanie and I will see you there!
-
Will there be anyone with a sign.
-
We're here on a green sheet right next to Terry's ice cream cart will mount the car is leaving now so by a tree on the green sheet
EDIT: ^ that's what happens when you dictate your sentence to Siri :P

Hahah, we kinda goofed on the location description. We were at the Pergola at Lake Merritt, which is actually the easternmost point of the lake (GPS coordinates 37.8085,-122.2495 (https://www.google.com/maps/@37.8085,-122.2495,143m/data=!3m1!1e3)). 'Pergola' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pergola) comes from the Latin 'pergula', a projecting eave. Learn something new every day!

Who's available on Sunday, May 24th of Memorial Day weekend? I'd love to have another meetup in Berkeley, on the campus or in one of the great parks! If you haven't been to Indian Rock, that's also worth a short walk. We're organized across a lot of different media, so I created a page specifically for keeping track of these events (http://bammm.andhigherstill.com/).

I would definitely like to meet some like minded mustachios! I am out in Hayward Please add me to any list of meet ups or is there a specific person that took charge of this?
I have so many questions that I don't even know them yet.

Living in Fremont. Trying to get the family on board the MMM wagon. Would love to meet up this weekend but Memorial day would work better for me.
Cheers,

I will be biking there from Bart. Where in the park are we meeting? I have never been to that park.

Hi, I'm a newish (~6 months) Californian looking to meet some mustachians in the area. I'd like to make the meetup this weekend, but I'm carless in San Jose, so it's a bit far (2.5-ish hours each way by public transit). Is there anyone going by car from the south bay I could catch a ride with? Alternately, is there anyone who wants to have a meetup closer to San Jose/Milpitas/Sunnyvale/Santa Clara?

Hi Alrecenk. I am also fairly new living in Santa Clara and would like to meet people around the area :) We had a fun meetup recently in San Jose and would love to have another one if there are those interested in meeting up locally. Feel free to PM me if you would like to meet or chat!

How is Cunningham Lake (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Alder+Leaf+South+Lake+Cunningham/@37.3299135,-121.8153548,13z/data=!4m6!1m3!3m2!1s0x0:0x2fedc9f8cb05f9f6!2sLake+Cunningham+Regional+Skate+Park!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0xfe412301c06b115b)?
It's right in the middle of the east side hellmouth. If you want to meet at a lake, Vasona in Los Gatos is wonderful, and Lake Almaden is reasonably nice.
-
Unfortunately, another MMM meet up I'll have to miss. Have fun today!
-
I live in SF, but we would be into meeting in San Jose on June 13th at 2pm!

If you are looking to meet in San Jose, and don't mind being near a river or creek as opposed to a lake, these locations might be more friendly for the carless (increasing distance from the transit hub)
1) https://goo.gl/maps/QN845
2) https://goo.gl/maps/zT21y
3) https://goo.gl/maps/cauuw
We had a small-ish meet-up at the first location before, the second is a largish green space but not sure about picnic tables and such, I'm not familiar with the last one.
Not that I wouldn't mind an excuse to visit a nice lake in Los Gatos.

Another vote for Vasona park! It's very dog and kid friendly and shadier than Lake Almaden.

i'm planning to attend on 6/13.
vasona lake or cunningham lake both sound good to me.
-
It looks like I'll be able to attend on 6/13 as well. The places CanuckExpat mentioned are definitely easier for me to get too as they're all near Light Rail stations. Lake Almaden isn't too bad either. I can do Cunningham Lake or Vasona lake as well if it's a better place, but it adds a bus ride and 30 minutes each way. I haven't been to any of these places, so I'll have to defer judgment on their quality.
-
Something has come up and I will not be able to attend next weekend, but if someone wants to step up and say "we are meeting in Vasona Park (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Vasona+Lake+County+Park/@37.241097,-121.9683435,15z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x808e35bfb5c787db:0x797f4dd6a28a1c24) at 2PM on Saturday, 6/13" I'd be happy to advertise it on the BAMMM site (http://bammm.andhigherstill.com/) and email list.

Let's do it and meeting in Vasona Park at 2PM on Saturday, 6/13!
Has anyone been to the park before? Is there a good spot there for us to meet and find each other?
-
I will try to make it this Saturday. Just to let you guys know there is a parking fee into this park. So if you plan on driving in I believe it's a $5 fee.

There's no need to pay a parking fee. You can park for free along University Avenue close to Blossom Hill, where there is almost always plenty of parking. There's a pedestrian entrance on University Ave as well.
Here's a Google Street View image of the entrance (you can see plenty of parking on the street):
https://www.google.com/maps/@37.241745,-121.972584,3a,75y,122.11h,75.71t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sSAejo39bwX7OZmTBo3sHMA!2e0
There's a picnic/Barbeque area just down the hill from that entrance, too, which might make a nice place to meet.
-
I am currently travelling in the Bay area (Petaluma) and will probably still be here on Sat (unless this rain stays around) so might try to join you guys. Is that park dog friendly as I have my dog with me.
Yep, you can bring your dog. Vasona is dog friendly (on-leash).
-
Holy shit guys it's raining in June!
That is all

... and back to 90 degree through the weekend!
-
Thanks. Not sure if I'll make it or not as now it's too hot for me here so may head up the coast towards Eureka tomorrow. Your weather here is kind of crazy. Hmmm...maybe it's me? Being a Goldilocks Diva can be a pain sometimes - "but...but...but... it's got to be just right for me or else!"
Hope you make it out, I always see your signature and I was looking forward to asking you if retiring at 42 to play beach volleyball is as awesome as it sounds
-
Hey guys I'm out. Too hot here for me (hiking near Ukiah today at well over 100). So will head up the coast tomorrow but will check in here when I head back south in a week or 2 or 3 and see if anyone is interested in a meet up then.
Just so you know, going up "towards Eureka" is cool, but Eureka itself is kinda a crappy truckstop. Arcata and Fortuna are more interesting.
-
Thanks for planning this. Look forward to meeting everyone this afternoon.
-
Where are we meeting? There are a lot of picnic benches in the park.
-

We're By the carousel and not sure where everyone is. Wanna meet by the carousel/train station area? We're a family with two small dogs.
-
I'm here by carousel too. By the ticket booth. Blue shirt and white shorts.
-
We're near the carasol. Any one else around? There's 4 and a baby so far
-
We're on the train to keep the little one entertained. Will be back to the carousel area in 10 mins.
-
There 5 off us now. We grabbed a table in the shade next to the carasol, also black and red chairs
-
Bummed I had to miss out on this one, I've never gotten around to checking out that park! How was the meetup, those of you who were able to go?
-
Bummed I had to miss out on this one, I've never gotten around to checking out that park! How was the meetup, those of you who were able to go?
The meet-up was good. Thanks to who ever took the initiative to suggest the date and location.
There was about ten of us (human adults), a couple children, and some four legged attendees.
We chatted, introduced ourselves, talked about a variety of topics, and a few people mentioned how difficult it can be to find others who think the same way in real life.
The park was huge and pretty nice. I knew it had a lake, but had no idea about the carousal and the train. There could have been another group of the same size who converged some where else and we could have missed each other easily.

Any robots or space aliens?
-
Awesome! I'm glad it happened and people had fun :)
Where and when should the next one be? I am busy the next three weekends, but I'd be happy to advertise again (http://bammm.andhigherstill.com/) even if I can't make it!
Time for something in the city, like Twin Peaks? Anyone up in the North Bay or over the hills in Walnut Creek? Judging by the Mustachian Map (http://goo.gl/maps/0FV0K), there should be people everywhere!
-
It was my first meet up and I had a good time talking with others.
I learned some stuff about back door 401ks, biking to work and a thrift store recommendation.
There was a suggestion that we meet up for a hike.
That would be fun.
Is there any interest in volunteering opportunities?
I'll be attending a free bike clinic this saturday at: www.goodkarmabikes.org
Is there anyone interested in volunteering together? :)
-
I'm definitely a fan of doing a hike. It was my first meetup as well last Saturday, and my girlfriend and I really enjoyed it! It was great to see the variety of people who showed up. I think we can all be a little apprehensive meeting people from the internet, but everybody we met was really cool. Let's do this again soon!

Anyone in the San Ramon area?
-
For those who aren't active on the Bay Area MMM FaceBook, Twitter, Google+, Google Group, Bay Area Mighty Mustachian Meetup (BAMMM), or MMM's personal email list...
The Mustachioed Man himself will be attending the next meet up, which will be at Precita Park, (3200 Folsom in Bernal Heights, San Francisco) at 6pm, Monday August 3rd. Along with a lot of other cool people.

Lol, I'm not on any of that so thanks for the heads up
edit: dagiffy1, I'm near-ish to San Ramon

Thanks for the heads up Bakari. Precita park in Bernal Heights is a nice change from Heron (sp) park.

By the way, which of these groups can I join (1) anonymously and (2) easily (I don't want to have to make a fake facebook profile, for example).
If I showed up to one of these, do you think anyone would "recognize" me"? Like, oh that guy is a crazy fool, must be dragoncar.
-
@dragoncar, the Bay Area Mustachians email list (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/bay-area-mustachians) is relatively anonymous, as long as you don't reply to anything - email addresses are hidden by default, only members can look at the membership list, and it's up to you how you're displayed.
I update bammm.andhigherstill.com (http://bammm.andhigherstill.com/) with new Bay Area events as they're announced, though there's no built-in way to subscribe to updates.
I've also been posting event details to Twitter with the hashtag #BayAreaMMM; here's the QueryFeed RSS feed (https://queryfeed.net/tw?q=%23BayAreaMMM) that you could subscribe to.

Is anyone carpooling in the Berkeley area?

Last-minute BBQ tomorrow afternoon (12:00~16:30) in Strawberry Creek Park!
Numerous people at the MMM meetup last month asked me to get this on meetup.com, so I created a group (http://www.meetup.com/BayAreaMMM/events/224408148/) for testing it out. Even if you can't come tomorrow, feel free to sign up and join the group for notifications of future events. The map and links to everything are also available on bammm.andhigherstill.com (http://bammm.andhigherstill.com).
I've reserved a 4.5-hour block at this small park (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Strawberry+Creek+Park/@37.8747199,-122.2872063,15z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0xfbb7925796c5307b!6m1!1e1), which is a short walk from the North Berkeley BART (or a short bike from Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, El Cerrito, Albany, or Richmond!).
There are picnic tables and charcoal grill on site, and if all goes according to plan we'll have a gas grill too—bring things to share! I'll also bring a blue tarp to lay out on the grass. The 16:30 block at this park isn't typically reserved, so we can probably stay as long as we'd like.
-
glad there's a meetup group, so much easier to stay aware of what's coming up and not miss out!
seeya tomorrow, I'll be there late in the afternoon but still hope to meet many people.
it's an easy ride from my place in north berkeley.
-
~20 attendees, perfect weather, good food, and lots of great discussion! Strawberry Creek Park (https://maps.google.com/maps?ll=37.868422,-122.286478&z=14&t=m&hl=en-US&gl=US&mapclient=embed&cid=18138126929147277435) was an awesome location—running water, charcoal grill, picnic tables, shade, inexpensive to reserve, close to BART—and I'd be up for making the BAMMM East Bay BBQ a regular thing.
(Barbie birthday party in the background was, sadly, unrelated)
I was skeptical about meetup.com as a platform, but it's actually pretty slick. I'll continue to advertise events on here, the BAMMM page (http://bammm.andhigherstill.com/), the email list (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/bay-area-mustachians), Google Plus (https://plus.google.com/communities/109606181421765828312), and with #BayAreaMMM on Twitter (https://twitter.com/hashtag/BayAreaMMM), but I highly recommend joining the Meetup group (http://www.meetup.com/BayAreaMMM/) for event notifications.

I'm sad I missed it but I did join the meet up group.
-
Can't believe I missed this! I live a few blocks away! (I haven't read this thread for awhile). If anyone wants to do informal Berkeley coffee meetings, I'm up for it.
-
Well it only took me a few months to find this forum, guess I need to work on my badassity.
Live in the Mission/SF, down to gather anywhere! Well, almost anywhere...
-
I definitely want to meetup as well. I'll be leaving my big expensive SF apartment in 2 months and I'm looking for a much cheaper solution, so if you guys know something, either in SF or in the East Bay, or are looking for a roommate, let me know.
-
I want to meet up too. I have had it with lurking this site!
JonyMustache, have you looked into Burlingame, San Bruno, South SF? Caltrain has regular stops along this route and you could get yourself to work much faster than if you drove! Depends on the "last mile" between the station and your home/work.
When is the next meetup?
-
I'll be in Bay Area Nov 10- 16, want to meet up then? I'm in Campbell, but could hop on light rail / train to meet-up. Hmmm I'll think about a spot.
-

I'd be game for a meetup then. In Campbell would work for me, or somewhere along either light rail or one the bike trails would probably be good for a lot of people.
How about Del Monte Park? It's along the Los Gatos Creek Trail, I think in walking distance of some light rail stops, and has street parking (correct me if I'm wrong about light rail access).
It's also so new that it doesn't show up on Google Maps
-
I live in SF. I'll be interested in a meet-up provided the venue is accessible by public transportation as I don't have a car.

I work near 880/237 and live in Fremont, so a weeknight would work best for me. Either way, I would need to be a car clown to get there!

Hi everybody! Just joined the meetup group. Campbell in Nov sounds good, too!
-
How about Thursday, November 12 ... 5:30 to 8pm?
I propose we meet at Campbell Park - mainly because there's parking, picnic tables, and shade. It's accessible via light rail too. Plus, I've been living abroad for three years and Campbell Park is 'home' to me. So since we're in the deliberation phase I'll go ahead and elbow in and grab the helm.
Let's do pot-luck? I can apply for a permit so we can bring beer ... mmm ... beer.
What do y'all think?
-
Sounds great to me! Thanks for putting all of this together everyone.

Ooh fun! I'd love to join but baby KS should be arriving sometime shortly before then so I may not be functional enough to leave the house yet. But if things are going extremely well and we're getting stir crazy being at home there's a slight chance I'd make it out!
-
Sounds good, but I don't think we need to worry about shade, as by 5:30 it will be getting dark. Can we get a place with a fire pit?

Thanks for the initiative. Since we decided on a date and location should we start up a separate thread for the meetup and logistics?

Just a thought on the time/location... Nov. 12 from 5:30-8 might be a bit dark and chilly that time of year. Sunset will be around 5pm. I suggest we consider some kind of indoor location. I'm not so familiar with Campbell, or I'd make some suggestions.
-
I'm interested, in south San Jose so somewhere in Campbell would work for me. I agree if we are meeting at night in Nov we would need something indoors.

See, this is what living on the equator does to a kid: I've forgotten to account for seasons!
Yeah- let's come up with a different time / place. I'd offer my house but, well, it's being rented out. I doubt our tenants would appreciate me inviting guests over.
-
Just a heads up to the larger SF Bay Area group -
We've started a thread (http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/monterey-bay-santa-cruz-salinas-monterey) for nearby folks in the Monterey Bay area. So far the responses have centered near Santa Cruz, and a small group of us is meeting for the first time there in a couple weekends on October 24.
-
Hey Guys!
I just started reading MMM within the last few weeks but I love it. Can I join in the next meetup group in the south bay? I live in Santa Clara.
Also, I've never posted in a forum before, so this is totally new to me. I know! Been living in the bay since 2007, it's crazy this is my first post ever.
Let me know :)

Welcome!
-
Hi,
Is anyone in the north bay, I'm new to MMM and the forum too, but would love to be involved in a get together of like minded PF peeps!
-
Welcome to MMM myamnesia. :) There are many of us up North, even here in San Francisco. ;)
Join the local group BAMMM http://bammm.andhigherstill.com/ and the Google Group https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/bay-area-mustachians
Stay positive and cheers!

That meetup we were talking about was going to be next Thursday the 12th at Campbell park right? Has that been scrubbed or moved to another place/time?
-
Let's meet at that time but indoors - I propose a coffee shop. Orchard valley downtown Campbell?
-
Hi all, I'm new here but I hope to come next Thursday wherever the meetup is. I live in Mountain View.

Ah, I was looking forward to this, but I think I'll have to pass. Coming from the East Bay, the traffic is going to be bad & it's so far. I think I'd be able to join an evening meetup in the East Bay...is there any chance a future meetup might be located there?
-
I'm down at Palo Alto - have we ever had a meetup in the south bay?
I believe that's what's being proposed, Campbell next Thursday. It's a bit far for me, probably 1.5 hours by public transit, but I might make it.
If there are more people in the south peninsula I'd be down to meet up around here.

That's Orchard Valley Coffee (349 E Campbell Ave, Campbell, CA) at 5:30PM on Thursday Nov 12th?
We'd be in (2 + a little one) as long we're out of work and the roads cooperate. It's relatively nearby for us.

I will be able to make this one, finally!
See you all there.

Yeah! I'm looking forward to our meet up tonight (5:30 Orchard Valley Coffee in Campbell).
I'm bringing along my friend whose house I'm staying at this week. She's excited to go too. See you there.
-
Will be there in a few minutes... Finishing our beer across the street
-
So lovely meeting you all! I hope to you see you again next time in town. In the meantime, I'll see you on the forums - CanukExpat (cute family, yo), Grenzbegriff (love your savings rate), Wynr (I feel we've share history in this valley), (and other mustachians who have not yet registered on forums, eh hem. ).

Yes, it was really great to finally meet some other Mustachians! Thanks Malaysia41 for arranging the meetup.

Hey folks, anybody up to meet in the city or North Peninsula? (San Bruno, SSF, Daly City)

Adding my name to follow the thread. I'm in San Mateo and open to meetups anywhere along the peninsula.

Tagging for future reference. Hope to join one of these gatherings in the future.

Is another meetup around here in the works?

Is another meetup around here in the works?
You just started one! Pick a rough time and rough location and people will come out of the woodwork.
-
Can I get included in the next meetup too? I'm in Santa Clara and I just missed the last one :( Also, could someone email me? I'm at kim.rebecca.davis@gmail.com. How do you know if new messages have been posted on here or do you just check all the time?
-

There's "Notify" button just above the first message in the thread. That's how I learned about your message :)
Btw, I haven't been to a mustachian meetup before as well, but I think it's time.
-
Keeping an eye out for East Bay area...plus posting to follow. This could be the greatest thing that's ever happened.
-
Same, though I (and I imagine others) won't be able to do any early weekday evenings. 5:30pm meetups in Campbell make me sad.
-

Cool, thank you! I will find that notify button. So can we do a weekend meetup? Maybe in a couple weeks? I'm thinking South Bay, but I can also meet on the peninsula. What do you guys think?
-
Following. Prefer South Bay or Peninsula meet-up. :)
-
How does the early afternoon on Saturday, January 30th or Sunday, January 31st work for everyone in the South Bay/Peninsula area? We can narrow down the location after setting the date and time.
-
Posting to follow. I'm in the city as well

Tentatively interested in either day. Mid-morning and mid-peninsula works best for me. Actual attendance depends on the mood of my 2 year old.
-
Either of those should work for me.
-
This could be the greatest thing that's ever happened.
Ha ha, not sure about that, but it is pretty cool :) Plus, your comment made me smile.
Edit to add: Another East Bay person, but on weekends I'm mobile & can make almost anywhere. Sat morning is usually busy but otherwise those days seem good.
-
I'm also in the East Bay, but can make it easily to Redwood City.
Might I suggest Hoover Park at Woodside Road and Spring Street? Then if people are interested, I could organize a tour of TechShop (http://www.techshop.ws/ts_menlo_park.html, disclaimer: I invested and so have a lifetime membership).

Hi wynr, that sounds cool.
Maybe all the East Bay folks could arrange a carpool?

We should have a backup location in case the weather is too wet at the park. Sunday mid-morning works for me (and seems to work better for NorCal).
-
I'm in Mountain View, would love to attend a South Bay meetup!
-
Hello!
The gf and I would like to meet up at the next meetup.
We're in Mountain View, previously suggested parks and Techshop tour sound like great ideas, preference for weekends.
Happy Friday!
-
Anytime on Jan 30 or 31 at Hoover Park in Redwood City and then possibly the TechStop afterwards is good for me. Based on others' feedback, it sounds like a meetup during mid-morning or early afternoon on Sunday, January 31 would be best.
How about meetup at 12pm PST on Sunday, January 31 at Hoover Park in Redwood City and then possibly TechStop tour afterwards? I've never been to this park before, so I'm not sure what landmarks there are for us to find each other once we get there.
-
Shoot, my mini-mustache is finally old enough to either get brought along to this or be left home with her dad, but I've got plans with an old friend who's going to be in town that day! Looks like I'll be waiting to see when the next one happens... have fun all!
-
Sounds good to me; I'll check my calendar when I get home to be sure, but I think I'm in!
-
Provided I can secure transportation to the event that morning/afternoon, I should be able to make it too on the 31st.
-
I would also be interested in a carpool ride from eastbay/Berkeley. I don't own a car (only a bicycle) but I can Bart to a mid location :)
-Kate
-
I could pick up/drop off at the Union City BART station on my way to the event.
Wyn
-
Another Mountain Viewer here. (That's not really a pun is it?)
Unfortunately I'll probably miss this meetup by a couple hours. I could get to hoover park by 2:30pm. I might still stop by in case there are lingerers, since it'll be on my way from SF down to MV.
-
Sounds good, the gf and I will be there!
-
Great, I'll plan to be there.
If anyone's got a mustache-on-a-stick or similar icon, it might work as a rallying point for those of us who're meeting up for the first time. Either that or keep an eye out for people looking lost. :)
-
Or we could use the Universal Mustachian Identification Signal (index finger under the nose).
-
See you all at noon or thereabouts.
wynr
-
Just arrived. Has anyone established a meeting place yet?
-
I'm here, but no, not that I can see. Standing around at benches playing with phone.
-
i am here also. near two large trees
-
I'm here guys. Where is everyone?
-

LOL!
I am sorry to have missed it, I had family stuff. One of these days...

SFBay meet up was held Sunday from noon to 2:30 pm. 8 people showed up at Hoover Park, enjoying the conversation and braving the windy and cold weather. After 2:30, a number of people went over to the TechShop. Looking forward to another meet up in the future!

Somehow I fell off the replies, so posting to get back on again. Let me know of any plans to get together!

None, apparently.

Hello, fellow SF/Bay Area Mustachians, I just joined. My name is Brook & I live in Noe Valley, a recent transplant to SF. I've instinctively saved most of my life, figuring it was a way to give myself flexibility in job choice. It's nice to see I have company.
-
Welcome aboard Brook.
Oneday - we all survived, but were so awed by the experience that it takes time to recover.
cheers,
Wyn

Hello fellow Bay Area Mustachians,
I've been following the blog for a while and just moved to San Jose a couple months ago. Now that I'm all settled in, I'm looking to meet up with other like minded people to learn how others manage to survive in this valley on a less than six-digit salary. I'm doing alright, but want to do better. Is there a regular meet up of sorts?
-
Wow, lots of activity here since I last checked! Sad to have missed the meetup.
I've started organizing some events through Meetup.com if anybody is interested: http://www.meetup.com/BayAreaMMM/
Let's try and make this a regular thing!
-
Mustachian meetup in SF in three hours:
http://www.meetup.com/BayAreaMMM/events/229366732/
-
Thanks everyone for coming out to the meetup today! It was good to meet some fellow financial-independence-seekers (and some who are already there) in the area.
I've got a few more meetups planned for the group over the next couple months, and am working to find some space to host educational sessions on financial independence topics. If you're interested, all the details are available on the Meetup.com page: http://www.meetup.com/BayAreaMMM/

Hello Bay Area Mustachians -
REMINDER: There's a cool meetup this SATURDAY, APRIL 23 @ 1 PM at Dolores Park in SF at which we'll talk about many Mustachian things, and a lot about TINY HOUSES. If you're interested, here are more details http://www.meetup.com/BayAreaMMM/
Personally, I'm planning to build a tiny house in the next year to remove myself from the ridiculous traditional housing expense of living in San Francisco and environs. There's a lot of cool stuff happening in the tiny house movement now...Come learn more and share what you know. It'll be fun!
Hope to see you there.
-
Hi all,
I moved back to the San Jose area last spring after some years in Chicago, and I would love to make it to one of these. Won't be able to do the one in SF this weekend, but I look forward to meeting some of you in the future!
-
Hi all,
I live in the Mission in SF. Looks like I just missed the meetup. I built a tiny house last year, would love to discuss! I'll find you on meetup!

Been here ten years, so I think I just missed it ;)

Calling for another MMM get together - this time in the (south) East Bay at Ardenwood Historic Farm!
I will go ahead and set the date for July 9th, 2016 (which just so happens to be my first full day of retirement).
I love this place - it is one of the hidden gems of the Bay Area!
Hope you can make it.
Cheers,
wynr
P.S. more info below...
From the web site (http://www.ebparks.org/parks/ardenwood#calendar):
Since Ardenwood is a working farm, the daily activities change from season to season so no two visits will be exactly alike. Visit our Naturalist Program page for more information and schedules before your next visit.
Ardenwood Historic Farm is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays, year round, including Labor Day and Memorial Day. Ardenwood is closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. For picnic reservations call 1-888-EBPARKS or 1-888-327-2757, press option 2. There is no parking fee. Dogs are not allowed in the Ardenwood Historic Farm.
Entry Fee
April 1, 2015 to November 24, 2015 (spring-summer-fall entry fees):
Tues., Wed. & Sat.--$3/adults (18+ years), $3/seniors (62+ year), $2/children (4-17 years), under 4 years - free.
Parking is free.
-
wynr, I would love to go & celebrate your retirement! Mr. O's birthday is that week, he usually had lots of activities planed, but not this far ahead. I will do my best, but please understand if I have to juggle multiple events.
To everyone: Ardenwood is a lovely place, but it will likely be H-O-T in July. Bring your hat and lots of water!
Also, I would mention that I've never taken public transit here, but the bus stop is pretty far outside the park and the road in does not have sidewalks or shoulders. Maybe there is a shuttle? If not, maybe bring your bike and/or arrange with someone to drive you in.
ETA: congrats on your upcoming retirement, wynr! I really should have posted that first thing.
-
Thanks Oneday!
There is public transit to the entrance, but it would be a long walk even from there. I could pick people up from the Union City BART station if needed.
wynr

CONGRATS on your retirement!!!!! SOOOO Awesome!!! Whoot! Whoot!! (insert happy Snoopy dance in your honor here!)
I seem to be missing the time of said June 9 meetup...???

...
I seem to be missing the time of said June 9 meetup...???
Oh, you are sassy! ;)
How about 10am? That way we can all meet at the ticket booth - it is a big park and so it will be hard to find each other after going in. Plus it will be cooler at that time (of course, this is the Bay Area, how hot can it get?).
Thanks,
wynr
-

Sorry, Wynr, I don't think you can retire on only 30 posts. I'm shooting for 10k, maybe 20k at least-- more if I have kids.
-
Gosh darn it! I better go one more year so I can get my count up!
-
Hey All!
Gf and I are a maybe for the July 9th Meetup. Congrats Wyn!
Also wanted to throw out that I'm trying to coerce my colleagues into a bikepacking trip (tentatively 1 night July 16th), thought some of ya'll might be interested. Leaving from Mountain View, thinking of going to Coyote Lake (~50 miles one way, mostly bike path). Definitely amateur hour over here, so fancy equipment not required.
Not sure how many of them are actually going, I may have slightly undersold the hill climb on the last one, dissolving whatever trust they originally had in me...
-
Hi somepissedoffman, that bike trip sounds like a lot of fun. Not sure I have the gear for it, but I will consider going.
Thanks,
wynr
-
Cool beans, Wyn, I've got your email will send you the details
-
I confess that I got fed up with work, and I did not feel like I was providing value to the company. So I quit three weeks earlier than planned! But lets keep the same date for the meet up at Ardenwood Farm at 10am.
Chime in if you plan on attending.
Thanks,
Wynr

Congratulations!
We have friends in town that weekend, probably won't make it.

I'll be there at 10.

That's great oneday. If anyone comes late, we can meet up at the blacksmith shop at 11am
If no one is riding BART, then I can ride my bike to 'the farm' (green mountain bike).
Also, bring a container, there may be blackberries to pick!

Oakland here! Commenting to follow.
Also, my Tiny House (being built by father in TX) will be done in the next ~year. Saw some earlier post about Bay Area TH'ers and would love to hear any advice on finding space for it.. or if any fellow Mustachians have a nice roomy yard to rent out ;)
-

We came across a cool couple who lived out of an RV on some land they rented in rural Livermore, I asked about it and she said she found the land for rent on Craigslist.
-
Ack, that is both baby friendly and close enough for me to come, but we'll be out of town! I hope it is super fun, so fun that you all want to go there again sometime soon when I'll be around and can join in. :)
Do be prepared, the parking lots get really full there on weekends for those of you who will be driving. We were there on Saturday afternoon and only got a spot because we happened to pull up as someone was leaving.
-
Anyone ready for another meetup? I posted on the financial independence subreddit to solicit interest in a SF bay area meetup and got some takers. Someone suggested meeting in Oakland as it is central for the Bart system.

It's a new year. Anyone ready for at meetup?

Sounds good! Something in the city mid-week? I can meet most any Tues and Wed. Any ideas of Mustachian places to meet on a winter evening?
-
Fantastic idea! I'm in San Jose so would appreciate a location somewhere along the peninsula if possible? Or I'll be up in SF on Tues 17th for another reason, so after 8 on that night would work for me in the city.
-
17th at 8 works for me! Any ideas on location? We wound up in a nice hotel lobby on Embarcadero a few months ago. I could look that up unless anyone has a better idea..??
-
17th works. Location close to BART would be good.
wynr
-
I'll suggest these two for relative proximity to both BART and CalTrain:
Hotel Utah: A good historic/dive bar. Normally has open mic, but nothing on the calendar so far for the 17th:
http://www.hotelutah.com/
Intercontinental Hotel: assuming there would be some place in the lobby we could hang out? Not sure about this particular hotel, but I've done this at other hotels

Here's a great listing of the free days at Bay Area museums! Enjoy!
http://sf.funcheap.com/city-guide/monthly-free-museum-days/

I am a little late in joining the conversation but would love to meet and to learn, as well. So sorry I missed the Far West Fungi gathering last yer - absolutely love their annual event - the best hidden jewel in the Bay Area. I will keep my 1/17 evening open and appreciate the BART line consideration. I will be coming from Oakland.
-
How about Hotel Utah for the 17th/8pm meetup?
wynr
Edit: Is this still going on? Who plans on attending?
Edit: Sorry, I will not be making it.

The following meetup is scheduled for Jan 19th:

https://www.meetup.com/BayAreaMMM/events/235387569/?rv=ea2&_af=event&_af_eid=235387569&https=on
I'll join if I'm in town that weekend!
-
Added another meetup for Feb 11th at The Cheese Board Collective.
https://www.meetup.com/BayAreaMMM/events/237554034/
I know it's short notice, but hoping some from the east Bay can make it.

Sorry to zombie the thread, wanted to introduce myself!
Moving to the south bay area with my hubby in a couple weeks. Looking for some like minded people in a very expensive town (SO is great about some aspects of Mustachianism, (401K, not living month to month, is planning on cycling to work when we move), but not great about others (Eats out all the time, wants to lease a car etc.)). Looking for advice about setting up in a new, pricey town. We're moving cross country, so will be arriving with basic possessions, but will need to buy furniture, restock the pantry etc.
I currently don't have a job- social-sciences PhD, what I lack in earning potential, I make up in frugalness, so I'm looking for cheap ways to get out and make friends.
Hope to meet some of your soon!

How are your quant skills? If you know statistics, R, SQL, etc., you could easily transition to an analyst/data science job, which pays very well. There are some reputable bootcamps, or self-learning options. Not everyone's cup of tea but I know a couple social science PhD types that made this transition and are doing very well.
Craigslist is a great way to buy stuff around here. Plenty of almost new furniture of a pretty high quality. The main thing to keep in mind for the Bay Area is that housing is really the only outrageous expense around here. You'll pay a lot for it, but it's very possible to practice standard frugality in most other areas.

That's great advice, thanks for it! Husband (who is a software programmer) has been pushing the quant stats route. I have an ok background in statistics and data management (am actually teaching a discipline specific stats course this summer), but virtually no programming knowledge. I'm going to try and make a go of the academic jobs for another year or two, with a firm end date/plan to transition to another path at the end of that. Very glad to hear of people who have had success with that transition!

@ electriceagle: Your thread does not work correctly. Kindly repost.
What is the location of this Mustachian House in SF? If you cannot provide the exact address at least share the neighborhood, specs and details about the current condition, occupancy, and if subject to rent control, etc. Thanks.
-
Thanks for clarifying. So the property is located in Hunter's Point. Interesting.
-
Following. Would be interested in the next meetup. I'm in Marin.
-
I would also be interested in the next meetup.

Interested too, from Mountain View.

Is there anyone else all the way up in Sonoma County?

Moving to the Bay Area in July 2017 (specific neighborhood TBD...) - will follow this thread, and look forward to the next meetup!

Santa Rosa in the house.

New to the cult, but I've been living and working in the South Bay for 5 years--currently in Campbell. I'd be into a meetup.

new to mustachism, would also be super interested in a Bay Area meetup!! (Wife and I live in Menlo Park)

Does anyone use our local metro system and need permit parking at pleasant hill or another nearby station? I signed up for the wait list like 4 years ago and finally got a hit (too late though). Pm me within 2 days

I see some new members posting.
FYI there is a BAMMM group and they happen to have a hike scheduled for this weekend.

Reap the VC money. The bay area has a new meal delivery company, (https://www.goodeggs.com/sfbay/home). First meal up to $25 is free, no commitment, need to buy $30, so $5 total out of pocket gets you a nice discount on otherwise overpriced groceries. Maybe still more expensive than making your own from scratch, but it was worth it to me and thought I'd share. I got a $25 kit and added $7 of ACME bread, which I ain't driving to SF or Berkeley for so that's a nice win for me.

This meetup group is currently in danger of shutting down due to lack of an organizer. Perhaps the members plan to migrate it to a Facebook group? If I still lived in the Bay Area, then I'd step up as the organizer as I enjoyed meeting so many people in this group when I lived in SF.
By the way, I'm in town for the next 2 weeks in case anyone wants to meet with me. I retired on 9/8/17.

Even without an organizer, meetings appear to occur. Hopefully, someone can step up in the role so the group doesn't disappear. Still, my vote is for Facebook group, way easier to follow.

Thanks for the review! I got a thing in the mail about this deal and was wandering if it was worth going for.
ETA: I have seen ACME at the Sunnyvale farmer's market, possibly at yours too?

There is now, kinda. Here's a brand new group, a branch from the related ChooseFI podcast group.

$10 delivery charge unless you spend $50. Seems to make it pricey anyway. Was there free delivery before?
Yes it was free delivery for my first $30 order (net $5). Looks like they changed the promo or “fixed the bug.” I guess $15 for $30 “worth” of dinner ain’t too bad, but IMO it’s pushing how good the deal really is. Closer to a groupon than a slick deal.
That reminds me that my first order was actually about an hour late due to some extra crazy traffic that day (freeway was shut down for shooting). They gave me a $10 credit to apologize but I really don’t want to spend $50 on what basically amounts to expensive personal shopping
The food quality was good though. Thought it was funny they gave me a whole garlic head when recipe calls for a couple cloves
-
When I tried GoodEggs it was free delivery with $30 minimum, and I used the $25 offer to only spend $5. The recipe and food quality was great, but I wouldn't order at full price. Honestly, it inspired me to make the same thing myself from scratch next time!

Even if there aren't many physical meetups, I'd love to trade tips and such with other Bay Area folks.

Hello all! The Santa Cruz Meetup Group will be having a hike at Henry Cowell this Sunday, July 22nd, 10am. Meet outside the gift shop and we'll do the Pipeline trail which is a 1.5/2 hour hike depending on pace and lingering.
We are also planning a second hike Sunday, September 23rd, probably at Fall Creek, details to be worked out.
Jump over to the Monterey Bay-Santa Cruz/Salinas/Monterey thread if you're interested in venturing south to join us or PM me.
-
Bummer!! One of the few weekends I'll be OOT this summer! Have fun! I put the September date on my calendar. Looking fwd to meeting fellow SC MMM's!

Any mustachian scrabble players in the east bay?
My friends and I have found scrabble to be an ultra enjoyable mustachian activity. Anyone interested in meeting up and playing some scrabble? I live in Oakland near Lake Merrit, which would be a great place to play.
Open to other games as well.

The Santa Cruz Meetup Group will be having a hike at Quail Hollow Ranch Sunday, September 23rd, 10am. We'll be meeting in the main parking lot area and will decide on the trail together.
Would love to have you join us! Jump over to the Monterey Bay-Santa Cruz/Salinas/Monterey thread if you're interested in joining us or PM me.

Oakland in the house, posting to follow thread and to see if anyone wants to do at-home yoga or crafts together. In a semi retirement period and contemplating options. Just moved to the Bay from NY area, whew, not the greatest placed to be FIRE-d!

Woot!! I'm so excited to meet local mustachians!! Can people confirm that this is still happening? Who is going?
My husband and I share one car and I think he is working sunday so I'm hoping I can make it!! Here's my dream: is there a mustachian woman out there who wants to meet me for tea/coffee on this saturday afternoon in santa cruz/soquel/capitola/watsonville so that I can meet you and feel safe about carpooling? I will buy your beverage, and then if you can give me a ride sunday I will spot you gas money!
Thanks!!!

I'm not available to meet Saturday, but I can give a ride from Scotts Valley on Sunday, I could pick you up at the SV transit center or wherever. I'm female, not sure how to reassure you I'm safe. I attended a previous Santa Cruz MMM get-together so several people on here have met me in person, including the 2 organizers of this hike. Send me a PM if you'd like to talk.

Hello!
My partner and I (ages 28 and 30, neurology resident and effective altruist, respectively) are living the frugal dream in Cole Valley, San Francisco. We wanted to meet other Mustachians in the city! I'd like to host a Mount Sutro weekend hike next weekend (either Saturday the 29th or Sunday the 30th), possibly supplemented with cast iron quesadillas at our apartment. Is anyone local, available, and interested?
Keep in touch,
Jill

We cant make that date, but are an early 50s retired couple in east bay that hike every Thurs and Sun morn with a group on our side of the bay. Would love another hike event (there was a meetup group that a couple of years ago). You might ping that group owner, as they have a decent list of people and the Lands End hike was fun.

Jill,
There is a meetup planned in SF on Oct 20th in noe valley
https://www.meetup.com/BayAreaMMM/events/254387135/

Thanks Steve and Phil for letting me know! I'll see if I can make it to the Noe Valley event.

Hello all! The Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay group is having a hike Sunday, November 11th at 10am at Big Basin. We will be meeting at Park Headquarters and hiking the Sequoia Trail, an easy four mile loop. The hike is on rain or shine.
There are a couple of us who have State Park passes, so we will be doing some coordinating of carpooling to avoid the $10 parking fee. PM me if you're interested.
-
Yay! We E2 are down to hike on 11/11 at 10 am! And we are down to carpool from SC! Shall we bring food and have a picnic lunch afterwards?

@ejmyrow We have a full car heading from Santa Cruz but I think there was someone on the Santa Cruz thread who was looking for a ride if you have room. Definitely! Or mid-hike at the falls? We'll bring snacks too!

@traviszzz I haven't heard from anyone coming from the South Bay but you are welcome to join us! PM if you want to exchange numbers or get further info.

Big Basin hike has been canceled due to smoke and bad air quality. Let’s brainstorm for January!
-
Santa Cruz ChooseFI is having a meet up on June 15th, 1pm at Oceanview Park. Extending the invite to the MMM crowd. Bring a snack or beverage to share if you’d like. Hope to see you there.

Santa Cruz has it's own showing of the documentary Playing with Fire scheduled for Tuesday July 16th at the Del Mar, but we need to sell 49 more tickets soon or it will be cancelled. You don't pay if it gets cancelled.
