Seattle Meetup - May 18 - Gas Works Park
« on: April 30, 2013, 12:59:45 PM »
Let's have a picnic!

Who: you and any friends or family you want to bring
What: MMM Reader's meetup/picnic
When: Saturday, May 18th. Noon - 2:00 (show up when you can)
Where: Gas Works Park, 2101 N Northlake Way, 98103
Why: meet other MMM readers, continue the online conversations face-to-face, brag about your badassity, enjoy a fun day outside, etc!
Bring: your awesome self, food, picnic blankets, frisbees, balls, other games to play

How to get there:

Car: There's a parking lot, though it's often full if it's a nice day. Here's the google map, for driving directions.
Bike: Take the Burke-Gilman trail and you can't miss it.
Bus: Metro route 26 will get you pretty close. Feel free to ask questions here about busing.

Many mustachians are bus or bike wizards, so feel free to ask for "how to get there" tips. Also we can use this thread to arrange carpools.

Rain plan: meet in the undercover shelter

Sun plan: I'll try to get there early and stake out some space near the top of the hill. Maybe a crafty someone can bring a giant cardboard mustache so we can spot each other?

I hope I covered everything. Let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, see ya on the 18th!

Oh my! This sounds great. :) I'm going to have to consider breaking out the special recipes for this event... I'm assuming people will be bringing food to share. I know I will!

Yum! Special recipes!

Yes, you can roll potluck style but I didn't want to put that in the official invite since there are so many different dietary restrictions these days.

As much as you can plan something while out of town with a 3 year old, we'll be there!  I plan on pretty much feeding my gluten-free self and my gluten-loving small one, but I'll try to bring something yummy to share as well.  I'm excited to meet people.  :)  I am the short, style-deficient brown-haired one with a way more fashionable mini-me.  We aren't shy, if we see a group, we'll march up and ask if it's the mustachians.

Wife and I are planning on it, but she's pregnant and currently suffering an inflamed hip, so I think we're going to be using the car.

As Seattle's newest resident (so new I won't live there until next week), and by the lucky chance that I am flying up on the morning of the 18th to try and find an apartment before driving with my stuff, I am going to try and make it straight from the airport. Looks like one train and one bus. I am excited to meet some of y'all!

That is badass! We'll bring some extra grub for you since you probably won't have time to get any for yourself!

Just a heads-up, there's a 10k run that uses Gas Works as the start/finish line on Saturday. Looks like they should be cleared out by the time we get there, but if you were planning on heading there early, it might be a mess.

Also, the U-District Street Fair is this weekend, in case you're in the market for dream-catchers.

See y'all on Saturday!

Thank you! Hopefully I won't get caught up in the traffic from the 10k. Looking to getting away from the heat -- LA gave me a couple of close to 100 days as a last hurrah!

Ugh.  That could be chaos. :/  We're going to be spending the morning at the Zoo, (yay!) so we might be a little bit late.  If the area is a total crazy craze and parking is a disaster and deal breaker, (psitf for driving) I will probably flee down the road to Matthews Beach with the small one and catch you guys next time. :)

Also, I will bring some organic tortilla chips and some gluten-free cupcakes to share.  And a pink soccer ball to kick around. (kickball?)

Edited to add:  I have got THE most insane "overheard at..." story that will blow. your. gaskets.  I can't share it here but it may win the grand prize of unmustachian horror.  I will tell you at the event.  Prepare to be amazed.  LOL!

I made a sign.  It's red with a mustache on it.  Mustache cupcakes are baking right now!  We will be driving since we have an appointment at Children's Hospital before we come and it will be easier for the kids.

I am hoping I can stop by.  I am in town for an event and may not be able to pick up picnic items.  I will be coming from a brunch and if I can escape without anyone noticing I will take the bus over.

We are shooting to make it. We might throw the bikes in the SUV. Park a few blocks away and bike to the park. Check perspiration on those biking in. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

While waiting in the parking lot after the meetup I just saw someone drive by in a brand new dodge dart but with a pink mustache affixed to the grill. Hmmm... Confused or latecomer?

Btw good times and nice to meet y'all!

Those pink mustaches are a marketing campaign for a new car-share service http://www.lyft.me/

Great to meet everyone! Let's do one again in the summer.

I wish I'd have been on time and had more time to talk with you all!  We were kind of frazzled after our little adventure.  Hehe. It was great to meet everyone and I look forward to next time!  :)

To reinforce the "I should be on a bike" idea ... right when we got back home and were unpacking the car, a hundred or so bicycles including little kids rode by as part of the "Summer Bike Rides" and stopped in front of my house to wait for everyone to catch up.   We were surrounded!  :)

destron, hope your house hunting went well!

Thanks! It did, I got a nice place in Interbay about 2.5 miles from my office -- bigger than specter, pets ok and a great garden with a BBQ area. I'm looking forward to moving in.

I posted in the other Seattle thread too, but cross posting: I'm going to be in Seattle July 24-29.  Anyone free to get together?

EDIT: Looks like everyone is responding over there.
