Perth Meetup! (Australia)
« on: October 07, 2013, 12:12:37 AM »
Hi!
I'm a brand new wanna-be Mustachian in Perth, and I'm struggling to make cuts! (Or maybe I need a kick in the pants. Or face punch.) Anyway, I was wondering if any Perth Mustachians want to catch up for a cuppa and discuss their awesomeness with me? (That is, I want to pick your brains).

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!

There's at least one other Perthie here that I know of... Do we have any Perth lurkers out there?!

I grew up in Perth, but live in the U.S. now. But I'm there every other year! Um, probably not what you're after in terms of having a cuppa though...

Well when you're coming to Perth, let us know and by then there should be a whole community of Perth-stachians to have a drink with :-)

Great! Well, while we flush out the lurking perth-stachians, what's a good time and place to meet up? This is still the internet, so somewhere populated and public seems right, but I'm having difficulty thinking of options that are mustachian! I've got some free time next weekend and for the first couple of weekends in November.

Haha yep, I have no interest in meeting in a dark alleyway at night even if it IS cheap :-P

So I guess we're looking for a central place that doesn't have to cost a huge amount... the mechanic's institute? Belgian beer café? Or somewhere non-boozy?

And how about Saturday the 2nd of November, mid afternoon? That's far enough away that some more peeps might see the thread and want to meet up.

The time is good :) I'd like to suggest a cafe instead, though, as I imagine it would be better to talk in?

Good point! I think I was trying to pick venues that would work if 6 - 8 people turn up... But judging by the extreme popularity of this thread, I suspect we'll be lucky if there's a third person interested in coming along :-P

How about cafe etro on King Street in Perth? Or a cafe in Subi or Leederville?

Perfect!

I have a coupon for two for one churros :-) so that could actually be a Mustachian MMM Meetup.

EXCELLENT!

There's at least one other Perth-stachian. But she may or may not be interested, I'm guessing a meetup wouldn't appeal to everyone.

Given that it's Perth, I half-suspect that when we turn up we'll all actually know each other in real life. Which will be hilarious.

Honestly, given the age range if I don't know you, we've almost certainly crossed paths! And awesome englyn, I look forward to meeting you too :)

It sounds like we are all twenty something females?
I'm excited it could be like stitch and bitch without the kitting ;-)

To my knowledge we all seem to be 20-something females, yes. I find it interesting that the gender and age range has played out like that! Does 3pm suit everyone? I'll be wearing a large red felt hat. Seems like the best way to get spotted.

3pm works for me. I'm planning to wear a bright red dress to be more noticeable. Meet out the front?

(I did briefly consider wearing a fake mustache - then realised that this would not be a good idea if I wanted the nice young men at churros to serve me without calling the police. Also, I assume that most people are slightly wary of meeting peeps from the internet and may just walk away if somebody looks like a psychopath. With a fake mustache I would definitely look like a psychopath. Plus, it wouldn't go with my dress).

Are there really no male and/or older Mustachians in Perth? It seems unlikely that 100% of us would be young and female.

It does! I have a friend who adores poking into people to get an idea of what society is up to, and she's observed that the majority of couples seem to have the female running the house and finances, and of course if you're single you're running it all by yourself anyway.

I thought the same thing about the mustache! Came very very close to doing Movember last year, but I'd attempted Frocktober just before that and didn't get a lot of support...

Hi-- let me know if there are any further plans to meet up after 2nd Nov. I am overseas for six weeks so can't join you (1 week annual leave, 1 week conference leave, 4 weeks studying as part of my course--- all in a relatively frugal style and supplemented by multiple grants, I may add)

Best wishes,

Well I saw that somebody's username is 'Perthcyclist' so I've just PM'd them. Who would've guessed there's so many of us? I'll have a look for the Mandurah user and see if I can find her to PM her.

Should we maybe set two dates, 2 November for those of us who are free at that point, and then a later date for more notice for those who can't make the 2nd? Personally I expect that you will all be so awesome that I won't mind hanging out a second time.

Stripey, when are you back in Perth?

Her name is FrugalAussie, and I've just PM'd her :-)

From my vague recollections I think she might have mentioned travelling a lot in a post, so she might not actually be around Perth at this point.

Hi Everyone. Thanks for the PM about the meetup HappierAtHome.  I'd miss the discussion as I've been offline while I'm settling back into life at home in Mandurah after being overseas for the last 12 months.  I'd love to meet you all.  I'm no longer a 20 something but I'm really pleased to meet younger women who share FI values. See you on the 2nd. I'll be looking out for the red hat. Astrid

If I can find the fake 'stache I got in my last birthday card I will wear it. Since the theme appears to be red I'll wear my old red&black Silence-Lotto cycling cap :)

LOL I am imagining all these people looking at everyone with a red dress or red hat. And then something left of centre like a dance troop all dressed up in red shows up coincidentally.

Hope you have a blast! If in doubt there's always the mustache salute.

Done. I may have held off replying because I was worried I'd come off too excited... But YES. I am willing to offer my place, once you all clear my awesomeness requirement (that is, I know you all a little better :) ) I am up for any kind of craft, but current favorites are scrapbooking and crochet

Yeah wait until you meet us all and are sure we're not creepy!

But then, heck yes :-)

I've never done scrapbooking, but I love crochet, and I've just got started on jewellery making. Once I've mastered basic jewellery I want to get onto card making (not at the super amazing level where you use $200 crimps or whatever, just nice basic cards). I'm always open to learning new crafts or just plain old bitchin' and stitchin'.

The nice thing about scrapbooking is that once you get started, you can slide right over into card making territory :)

My daughter and her boyfriend are joining us.  They're 20 somethings and have come to the lovely realisation (thanks to my gentle push towards MMM) that if they get frugal they don't have to work forever. I'm so proud :)
Do you think we'll be able to find a table together at the coffee/chocolate shop? My suggestion for the next one is a picnic at Kings Park. Cheap, quiet and just such an exquisite environment.

Sounds like a picnic at kings park would be a great idea for the next one, many more people than I expected! We may struggle a bit to find a table, perhaps we should switch to the one in subiaco, from memory that has bigger tables.

And I'd love a picnic in King's Park for our next meetup - maybe late November or early December?

Either can I, but then again, but with the combination of Perth's real estate bubble, its high average wages and its ridiculously high cost of living, it makes sense there'd be people looking for alternative solutions...

Yeah, I took a journey through "wow I have money what to do?" Through to "I could invest? Requires more research" and now I'm at "why aren't we able to cover all expenses on 1 income?", which is how I ended up here.

I think with the high incomes, consumption and spending is out of control all over the shop. Unlike quite a few people in this town, I feel like I learned something from the GFC. The prosperity that we take for granted can disappear overnight. I just decided that treadmill wasn't for me and that if we ever had another GFC which actually hit Aussies like it did the rest of the world, I didn't want to be the family who had to move somewhere with only the clothes on their backs when the bank foreclosed on their house with incredibly upside-down mortgage.

I guess my view is also shaped by my family's experience of the recession in the 90's. I want to make sure that something like that wouldn't have a catastrophic effect on my quality of living.

I think such an experience would definitely go towards defining what you do with money. I had a fascinating conversation with a good friend about different upbringings and treatment of money. She's a (self described) low socioeconomic background materialistic social climber, so she spends most of her money and looks down on those who don't have flashy things. However, she's also very risk averse, so any large purchase has already been subject to rigorous investigation and testing in her budget. Meanwhile, I'm less materialistic, but from a middle class background (not sure if it's "low" or "high"), who probably fits the pattern of trying to copy her parent's current lifestyle. I haven't experienced a lack in my life, so I never expect to... Just outside the realm of experience.
Once we put it in those terms the difference in our spending made a lot more sense.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
