Meet at my place at around 1? I will send a PM to those coming. It's going to be nice and warm Sunday so we can hang out in the yard. I'll have the sprinkler on for the kiddos. We do have a BBQ and you are welcome to use it but i'll just have some munchies out.

I won’t be able to get there today. One of my children is battling a virus that I also had last week so we are stuck at the house today.

Two questions: what was the mortar and pestle for, and aren't you dirtying the bottom of your plate by putting it on the cutting board?

M&P fo' crushing the nuts.
Seasoning bottom of plate with garlic/onions/lime.  Why limit to licking the upside of the plate only?  I see no downside here.  :-)

Bonus: Knife for cutting garlic/onions/lime.

Merci bien Frankieve, Mr. Frankieve and kidlets!😀

Really enjoyed the chat and company!

@Ottawa, excellent looking Pad Thai!

So, fo the next sort-of meetup.....I noticed by the specials on Flipp, that it might be time to make some of my Grammies Mustard Pickle Relish recipe.   (Zucchini, Cauliflower, Onion, Peppers)

Any takers?  Will need assistance chopping, and we can share some vino and such....

I followed Tako pretty closely: http://www.mrtakoescapes.com/mr-takos-easy-shrimp-phad-thai/
I would recommend using less than a whole bunch of green onions (2/3).  I would also use more cilantro (1/2 cup).
But, personal taste!

Would be very easy to sub the chicken or tofu for the shrimp.

Grammie’s Mustard Pickle Relish - canning party!

It is zucchini harvest time, and that means relish making time.  If you haven’t tried my Grammie’s recipe yet, it does contain Mustard powder - but it isn’t mustardy.  It is more a sweet/sour condiment.  Excellent on a cheese sandwich, charcuterie boards, or on pork, chicken, or fish.  Heck, it is excellent on a hotdog or hamburger too.

I am happy to share the recipe, and will need chopping skillz to assist.

This Saturday, Aug 11th, starting at noon @ my place.  (If you can’t make it then - I could host a second date)

Let me know how much relish you’d like to take home (recipe makes about 16 cups) - I can purchase the veg.  I have received an excellent supply of mason jars from a friends, as they were downsizing, so I may be able to front you some jars.

If you can’t come and would like a few bottles,  or If you can come, and just want a couple of bottles - that is all OK too.

Based on numbers/ amount being made, how many sealing rings & caps the bottles need, I can come up with a price per cup.

I'd also be curious to the price of one jar (and how long it stays good since I only have some for other people, I don't eat any)

Are you interested in getting more mason jars? My spouse has some from way back when his mother would do some canning with him but hasn't used them in years. I haven't taken a close look, so it may be that the rings have worn out. But if you are interested in having them passed along your way, I can take a closer look.

(I'm not sure whether Saturday will work but I could drop off the jars soon regardless of Saturday's activities.)

@jambongris it the same relish!  Family favourite!

I sense that I may not have much of a canning party.   No worries if you have other plans, it is canning time and I am going ahead with our regular batch for us.

But I am sensing that I may be able to sell off a second batch......or at least for barter.....

Ottawa MMM PSA:

If anyone is interested in the cost per the Mustard Pickle - it comes out to about $2 per 500 ml jar - not including electricity or time.  Biggest part of the cost is the new sealing lid for the mason jar.

So, I'll be making some more tomorrow and/or Tuesday - $3 per 500 ml jar.  This year's batch has more cauliflower in it - not that you'd notice :)  PM me  if you are interested in purchase.

Also - for those who are interested - Super Store is selling 25 lbs boxes of plum tomatoes for about $7.50.   In a few days they may go to half price, but you may have a few more dodgy ones in the box.   Peel, chop, freeze in baggies.   We did two boxes yesterday - yielded 20 - 2 cup bags of chopped tomatoes, and 28 - 1 cup bags of plain tomato sauce.  That is about $0.19 per 1 cup chopped tomato, and $0.27 per cup of prepared tomato sauce.   Should last us almost a year.

Anybody in Ottawa have the game dead of winter?

I'm trying to find it in order to try it out. (Next step would be going to a board game bar.)

Lews, I haven’t heard of that game.   The husband recently picked up Azul, which I would highly recommend!  good for two players too.

I was actually thinking that a meetup might be nice.   I know quite a few of are going to CMC this weekend....I was thinking Saturday Sept 29th, so those that attended CMC could share any tidbits learned.

I wouldn’t mind hosting again.  If the weather complies we could sit outside.   Alternately, we could do a park again, that way kidlets could roam.

Thoughts?  Interest?

It's a cooperative/non-cooperative game depending on what happens.

Don't know if I will be able to attend, my GF has her family coming, and for some reason she was unimpressed with my plan of leaving and avoiding them all weekend.

I've played dead of winter - we had to watch a 30 min instructional video first, and then playing took another few hours. I can see the appeal if you have a consistent group of players, but if there's only 1-2 people who will play with lots of new people, I think you can serve the same purpose with a less overly-complex, "everyone dies of frostbite" game.

I'll vote in favour of a meet-up in the next couple weeks. Odds are we'll be around and if so we'd love to attend.

My GF loves it, and since I make force people to learn play Betrayal at House on the Hill.... the game being too complicated isn't really something I can say without them laughing in my face.

If your GF loves it, that's definitely a good enough reason! Having played Betrayal and Dead of Winter, I still think the latter is much more complicated  (Betrayal waits until you've mastered basic skills before getting complicated, at least, which I find helps), but if you've got someone who really likes it, that's pretty irrelevant.

(And I really shouldn't talk AT ALL about too complicated games given that I keep luring people to play Power Grid with me... we had to break out calculators in the final rounds the first time we played... and it took like 3 hours)

I got power grid last year at my family Christmas exchange and I still haven’t made time to play it yet. Argh.

And I’m the one that brought it to the exchange because I had heard good things about it.

@jambongris Oh no! If you'd like to try it, my nearby household is two people who've played and would love to play again  (none of the rest of my local family will touch it with a ten foot pole after hearing the description). We've got free evenings most weekends in the next month. Totally understand if just getting the time is too tough though!

Looks like I have no excuses to go any longer without playing Power Grid. Re-laying patio stones is consuming all of my scant spare time right now but I should be done by this weekend.

I just need to find a way to sneak in a few practice sessions so I don’t get destroyed.

I am still OK for the 29th, but I believe only Novik can come.

I am OK to postpone, but cannot do any meetups till after the 15th.  Plenty of houseguests coming my way!

Postpone it is.

Just as an aside, a pub meetup might be fun too.

Happy end of Q3 everyone!
