I would be interested.

Should we try a park picnic setting?  Bate Island is nice; however, Vincent Massey Park or Andrew Hayden Park have toilet facilities and BBQ pits.

I won’t be able to make it; I’m doing doors open Ottawa that weekend. Hope the weather is better that weekend than it’s looking for this weekend.

I'm unlikely to make it since we're planning to do lots of Doors Open that weekend, but it does sound like fun so I'll be keeping an eye on plans here in case ours change!

I guess Doors open won!

What are people going to see? I`m looking at the Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre. + The national art center on sunday... possibly the rowing club for the sunset.

Saw the storage hangar at the Aviation Museum and the Canadian Conservation Institute. Both really good picks. Anyone else pleased (or unpleased) with their doors open picks?

Likely no for me.  I have houseguests leaving some time on Sunday, there will be laundry best done on weekend rates.   Also, the F1 in Montreal is a must watch.

Just FYI, a company called ontario home protection is selling carbon offset programs door to door, at the price od 25$/month for 60 months, and trying to lie and tell you that you will receive electricity credits for 45$ which will more than cover it. This is a flat out lie, as they are trying to pass off the OESP (electricity support program for low-income) as part of their program. The saleswoman lied to me multiple times and tried pressuring me into signing right now and taking care of the details after when they called.

Seemed like the best way to let ottawa people know. Especially since the 25$ for green initiative in exchange for electricity credits really seemed good to me. Till I realized what they were doing.

Hello Ottawa Mustachians,

I've recently returned to the forums after years away, after noticing I was FI when musing about my next career move in case my current job ends suddenly, which it could.  I counted my pennies and realized my next career move could be to not have one any more, so I have come back to the forums and blogs to gather info and reassure myself that financially I am ready, whether it comes to that or not.

I'd love to meet some local frugal folks.  I am a long-term Ottawa resident, but in recent years have been away a lot, working up in the arctic (where my "Bingeworker" moniker comes from) and spending time in the USA where my American husband was getting his PhD.  We're full-time locals here now though, for the past year.

Glancing back at recent ideas, I'd like to propose a totally casual disorganized potluck in Andrew Haydon Park, which is on the bike path and not too far from transit (Bayshore station) if anyone is busing.  I'm guessing weekends are the best for most of you?  How would Saturday July 7 or Sunday July 8 work for people?  Friday July 6 would also be fine.  I work, but part-time (I semi-retired back in 1992 so I have been at this my whole adult life).

If anyone is interested, which day would be better for you, and is lunch or suppertime better?

So for those who replied so far, it sounds like Saturday afternoon, July 7, Andrew Haydon Park is the option that works for everyone.  How would 4-6 work for people?  Does that work?  If not, let us know what would.

If anyone wants to BBQ something, there are some BBQs that are usually not too busy at the west end of the park, right near the bridge over to Dick Bell Park, kind of tucked behind the little hill there, past the waterfall.  We could maybe meet there, or meet near the bridge if those tables are already taken when we arrive?

Still hoping some others can make it too, let us know if you can!

Sounds great. 4-6 is actually ideal for my spouse and me. We are beholden to our dog's medication schedule so it's really nice that the time proposed actually coincides with a period of time between meds. So, weather permitting, we are in.

Sounds Great!  Timing is good!

Since the park is large, can you post a Google Satellite image of where that meeting point is?

Here's a link to that end of the park: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Andrew+Haydon+Park/@45.3495248,-75.824615,18z/

But basically, when you look on google maps, we'll meet near the western edge of the park.   At the western boundary is a creek with a bridge across it that goes to the sailing club at Dick Bell Park.  On the eastern side of the creek, there are some picnic tables and BBQs a little south of the path, on the other side of a little landscaped ridge, so we can meet there if the tables are free, but if not, we can meet near the bridge and go find a table or other spot from there.  I can carry a card with a mustache on it, or place it on the table if one is free.

Before Saturday I can PM folks with a reminder and my cellphone number so that you can text me if you can't find the group.  I think the rest of you know each other though, it's more likely that I will be the confused party milling about aimlessly and you will have to come rescue me!

The weather forecast is good, so hopefully we won't need to postpone for rain.

I am brand new to the forum. I live in Ottawa and am recently single (with two young children). Wanted to post here first in case any of you 'older' posters would be interested in chatting about retirement in the area. I now have to completely replan my life and figure out how I will retire some day and what kind of numbers I may need.

I haven't posted an intro or case study yet. Finances and my life are not yet finalized. Just feeling overwhelmed and lost at the moment.

Welcome to Ottawa meet up group. a few of us have met a few times. the summer always makes it a bit harder to find a date that works for most. but if you suggest a date...we can see if it works.
I wanted to say hello, I'm also have two young children. being a mother of two keeps you so busy already...then going through a separation now must be difficult. Hang in there!

The afternoon of the 5th works for me also. If you want I'm happy to host here. assuming it's nice we can all hang outback. I have a large fenced yard, so the kids can run free. I'll serve some punch. let me know of that would work. my place is in the West end. Not far from Algonquin College.
