Sunday June 22nd was mentioned as a possible date if this isn't coming too soon on the heels of our last picnic. I would be in! Central Park seemed to work well as a central location in case we want to just do a repeat of our last picnic.
-
Works for me.
Twelve next to the Strand stand?
-
Awesome! I should be free.
Btw this week Thursday there is an interesting (free!) event for minimalists: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-minimalists-everything-that-remains-tour-new-york-city-tickets-8435684359
-
Thanks for the heads up on the event jingleszheng.
I will look to attend it. I have read some of their blog entries over the past year. Great stuff.
-
That date works for me too!
-
Darn it, y'all keep choosing dates when I'm out of town on vacation.
#firstworldproblems?
-
Let's all bring a book to talk about and share some good MMM reads. Ill bring the Millionaire Next Door
-
Is this event still happening? If so I'd be interested in attending. I'm new to the area so an address or location I could GPS would be helpful.
-
I cant make it after all as its my birthday and some friends and I planned brunch, but enjoy!
-
Since a few people can't make the 22nd, should we find another date in July?
-
Sounds like a good plan.
I'm not sure I can make it either.
-
Weekdays or weekend evenings are better for me - anyone else?
-
I also can't make the 22nd. How about Sunday the 29th? or the Saturday evening before?
-
is a july meet-up under discussion?
-
Not yet, I think.
Random suggestions and we can see how many have the possibility to meet:
- Sunday July 13th at 12 noon
- Saturday July 19th 12 noon
- Saturday July 19th 6 pm
Someone for whom weekdays are better can suggest a weekday as well.
(Aside, I think it would be better to have one single thread for NYC meetings instead of a new for each meet. Easier to subscribe to the messages that way.)
-
I could definitely do the 13th. I couldn't really do 6pm on the 19th but noon might be doable.
I've got summer Fridays this month if any of the weekday folks would like the 11th or 18th.
-
I can't do the 13th or 19th...I could so Saturday the 12th or a weekend in August.
-
19th sounds good to me.
-
I don't live in NYC but I love it and will be visiting July 24-27 ... So I'll keep an eye on this thread to see which date you settle on.
-
Feel like this is fizzling out due to scheduling difficulties. :( Maybe we should start a Google group or some other sort of email list to be able to reach people more easily?
-
I am new to the forum section of the site, and I'm interested in a google group or news about meet ups. Thanks!
-
Hey folks, another new member who is interested in a meetup. Maybe a new thread is in order?
-
Hey everyone!
Long time reader, first time poster here. I just created a google group for us! :)
Please join here - https://groups.google.com/d/forum/mustachiansinnyc (https://groups.google.com/d/forum/mustachiansinnyc)
Let me know if you have any issues joining! I think I set it up so that anyone who views that page can request to join
Looking forward to meeting all of you! :)
-
Thank you, SpiritedWinds! I had trouble signing in, but I will try again from my home computer this evening.
-
Looks like the google group is up and working! We have a total of 5 members so far! Woohoo! :)
-
Hey folks, another new member who is interested in a meetup. Maybe a new thread is in order?
Usually sticking to one thread is best because then anyone who's been interested in the past gets the notification that there's activity on the thread. With a new thread you might miss some people who don't see it since the forum is so busy.
So stay tuned!
-
Yay googlegroup! I'm sure we'll pull another meetup together somehow :).
-
Hey y'all! The weekend of August 16th/17th was mentioned in the google group for a meetup--how is that for people? I'm free on Sunday the 17th, so that's my vote obviously. :) Another Central Park picnic would be great!
-
17th sounds good to me too.
Central Park at 12?
-
I think that would work for me too!
-
Count me in for the 17th. When and where?
-
Yay for the 17th! I agree, Central Park at noon by the Strand kiosk on 5th ave at 60th st should work as a picnic meeting spot if the weather obliges--we had good luck with it last time.
-
Shameless bump. We still on for this Sunday?
-
We're on, and I'm in. Will possibly bring lentils (the fiancee, not the food), and possibly a friend, too.
-
Not to discourage anyone, but I'm planning to come.
-
We just moved from Manhattan to the Boston area, so I won't be able to attend any more of the NYC meetups. Have fun everyone! I had a great time at the last meetup in May. --Ravi
-
I won't be able to make this one, but hopefully the next one!
-
I can make it, may be slightly late though--ioseftavi, maybe I'll message you my # separately? Returning from Westchester that morning, and not exactly sure on the arrival time. Not sure what I'll be bring, possibly some peaches/fruit...will try to remember to bring my kite again!
-
Sounds good, Nora! I'll have an IRL friend coming with me, I think, but just keep me posted and we'll see you when you get there!
-
I won't be able to make this one, but hopefully the next one!
Change of plans, I can make it! Are people bringing food? What should I bring?
-
So how do I know who is who? I'm at the stand now
-
Im on train in astoria. There around 1ish. I brought boxed wine because: booze. See y'all soon!
-
Great meeting everyone today! We should do another one soon!
-
Bummed I ended up missing this, glad it was a success!
-
I'd love to attend a meeting too! I'll keep my eye open for the next one. :-)
-
Anybody want to try for the weekend of September 20th?
-
Sept 20th might work for me. Let's start a new thread? I feel like last time not enough NYC people clicked through because our thread title didn't match the meetup date.
-
It would be good to have a single thread for NYC. Can't we just ask a moderator to change the name of this one to "NYC meetup".
-
I'm in for the 20th. Thinking of doing the climate change march on sunday, so Saturday is better for me.
-
Norabird! You're the OP! Are you able to change the thread title?
Wait, apparently I can change the subject line, let's see what that does.
ETA: No good, only changes it for the post. Norabird, how 'bout if you modify the subject line in your original post, does that do it?
-
Ahhh why didn't I think of that! Fixed :)
-
Bam! Well done.
ETA: While I'm adding silly extraneous posts to the thread anyway, here's something that may interest New Yorkers who, like me, don't use an unlimited card.
How memorizing 1905 can help you outsmart the MTA. (http://iquantny.tumblr.com/post/96700509489/how-memorizing-19-05-can-help-you-outsmart-the-mta)
-
that weekend works for me, and I'm also going to be at the march!
-
I'm a maybe for that weekend.
-
I'm a maybe as well for that weekend. I work Friday and Saturday night, ~14 hour shifts. :-P Makes me pretty sleepy during the day.
-
That weekend works for me.
-
Works for me too.
-
We meeting in the park near that spot I don't know how to get to? Or somewhere else?
-
We still up for this weekend?
Will the park be able warm enough?
12 at the strand stand tomorrow or Sunday?
-
I'm still up for it.
-
Hey guys,
Is anyone interested in another NYC meetup in October?
-
Good luck getting people to show up :D
I'd be game for another try assuming people actually respond.
-
Hello All,
I'm moving to the NYC area (Hoboken, NJ) from DC and would be interested in an October meetup. Saturdays or late Sunday afternoons are normally best for me.
Also just joined the google group.
Rose
-
pfo and everyone, I would be interested in an October meetup! :) Are there particular weekends that work better for people?
-
Fall is busy for me, but I can host people in December/January down the line
-
October would be good... Weekend of the 24-26th?
-
I'm out of town 24-26 but I'd like to join the googlegroup.
-
Hi All,
If we want to get a pretty close approximation of our Central Park meeting place for winter, the Sony Atrium is pretty good (550 Madison between 55th and 56th sts).
It would be great to meet up in January or February!
-
I'm up for meeting in January or February! Maybe we can all meet up sometime in mid-January after the holidays?
-
That sounds wonderful! I'd love to join once things have settled down after the new year.
-
I'm happy to host a potluck thing on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon in January or February if PLG isn't too far out of the way for everyone. I'm at the Q at Parkside in Brooklyn.
-
I would be interested in having a potluck, norabird! :)
What dates work for people? My weekends are mostly open from Saturday 1/17 and on!
-
Any saturday lunch/afternoon is good. Sunday AM or afternoons are ok too.
-
Weekends are good for us (except for the weekend of 1/31-2/1)
-
I could probably host on Sunday Jan 18th or Saturday Jan 24th if those dates work.
-
Jan 24th is way better - I think we're outta town that long weekend. A lot of other people might be, too!
-
Jan 24th works with me!
-
I would love to meet some real live NYC mustachians; do you guys already know each other or is this thread pretty open to new people?
-
I could do any weekend coming upi!
I would love to meet some real live NYC mustachians; do you guys already know each other or is this thread pretty open to new people?
Some of us have met at previous meet-ups but I think it's a pretty different group each time and there are always new people coming.
-
I can't go on the 24th, but my schedule is always crazy. Would love to meet everyone sometime so hopefully we'll do another one soon.
-
Thanks, sheepstache!
I am available currently all those weekends, but am 39 wks preggo so have no idea what small creatures may get in the way of a planned meetup. Regardless, whether it's this time or next time I'll keep up to date on this thread and hope to meet some nystachians soon.
-
Seems like the 24th is best, so let's do that for this next meetup. I'll have some cheese and drinkables and probably a veggie quiche, but other contributions welcome! Guessing early afternoon is most convenient, maybe we can get rolling at 1? The address is 41 Clarkson Ave #1F, BK (too lazy to contact people with this via message), phone is 212-945-8526.
-
New to the forums, been reading MMM for about half a year now. I would love to meet some nyc mustachians! Definitley putting this on the calendar.
-
I'm new as well, and will be around on the 24th. Would absolutely love to attend!!!
-
Sounds great. I'll book my calendar.
I'll host a Feb/March meeting, but I'll first have to 1. move to bigger place, and 2. buy a couch/chairs.
-
I should be there on the 24th!
-
I'll be there too. Looking forward to it!
-
I will not be as it looks like I'm heading into hospital on the 22nd or 23rd for induction of baby #1. On the plus side, I can't wait to have it out! Hopefully I will meet you all next time :)
-
I just now found this thread (man, where have I been?)
Mind if I tag along as well? Also - happy to bring something. Is this the kind of thing where people would prefer some craft beers or snacky/food things?
-
We'll plan to be there on the 24th... is there a google spreadsheet or anything listing what people are bringing?
-
All are definitely welcome! And snacks/drinks encouraged too. I'm not up to creating a tracking spreadsheet at the moment (bit under the weather and have possibly lots my wallet...?) though someone else is welcome too; cheese and hummus should be covered at least, as I have largeish amounts of both.
-
What time does this start and end? Lentils and I will possibly be there, depending...we have a prior commitment that might runover to the point where we can't make it!
-
I'm thinking 12:30-4:30.
-
My wife is way backed up on work, and has had a work emergency come up, so she's going to be working all day Sunday to catch up. I'll probably come over with some goodies. Is anyone allergic to nuts? ;)
-
Just for clarity's sake--this will be tomorrow Saturday the 24th. It's supposed to snow, but I'm seeing 2-4 inches and freezing rain predicted--not fun, but not impossible to navigate.
Address and phone here (I'll edit them out next week):
41 Clarkson Ave #1F (2nd fl)
212-945-8526
(Also, Distshore, good luck on the induction!)
-
12:30, right?
Also, are there any animals in the apartment? Particularly cats or dogs, even if only visiting regularly.
-
Yup, 12:30! No animals :)
-
I just got word that a good friend of mine will be in town tomorrow, so I won't be able to make this one after all. Would love to catch the next one, though!
-
Ps--this is in brooklyn off the parkside Q or Winthrop 2/5, bet Bedford and flatbush.
-
Sorry all I'm wimping out this weekend - long travel time + too much going on + likely weather delays even if MTA won't admit it.
Next time!!!
-
I'm taking off soon! I'll bring some soup.
-
Me and girlfriend will show up between 1:30 and 2.
-
Great meeting all of you!
-
Norabird, thank you for hosting! Thanks for the good conversations.
And just for the record, here are the books and websites I heard about today:
“The Millionaire Next Door” by Thomas Stanley and William Danko
"Your Money or Your Life" by Viki Robin

-
Ah shucks, I missed it. I was in the city today, too! Hope you all had fun; hopefully I'll see some of you at the next one.
-
We're sorry to have missed this! We're looking forward to making the next one.
-
missed this. can someone start a group at meetup.com or the such?
-

Now that we have a single thread it's not so bad. Meetup groups cost money, you know...
-
Mustachian in Brooklyn here. Just came on board to the forum after several months of following the blog. Looking forward to the next NYC meetup!
-
Welcome Mari!
Theonethatgotaway--there is a google group, mustachiansinnyc@googlegroups.com, but it usually just ends up pointing to this thread. You can set an alert on this discussion so you get updates when there are new posts.
You could try out these meetup groups though: http://frugalliving.meetup.com/cities/us/ny/new_york/
Thanks to everyone for coming out last week, very successful get together!
-
SO and I live in NJ an hour outside NYC (I work near Penn Station). Perhaps we can setup a park lunch one day in the spring when it's a bit nicer out? We all bring our lunches already!
-
Hi fellow NYC 'stashers!
Drakmon and I were so sorry to have missed the last meet up. I was out of town, unfortunately.
Since Drakmon and I are moving to our new, Mustachian-friendly digs in Washington Heights, what if we volunteered to host at our new place once we move in? We should be in and ready for company by the weekend of April 11.
Anyone interested?

I'd be interested! Would love to meet some fellow NYC area people. I also just moved, but to my own 1 bd apartment right on the other side of the river from you, in Cliffside Park/Fort Lee area. It has a nice sized backyard, so would also be down to host a BBQ or something once it gets warmer!
-
Me and lentils are almost definitely in - we'll confirm closer to the date, but you should expect to see us there.
SIDE NOTE, CAN WE GET SOME NAMETAGS FOR THE NEXT EVENT??? IT IS CRAZY TRYING TO KEEP TRACK OF WHO IS WHO IN MY HEAD.
-
Pitagirl and I may attend depending on when and where.
-
Posting to keep track because I'll be moving to NYC (/NJ?) in a few months.
While we're at it, any recommendations for relatively cheap areas with short commutes to Chelsea and the financial district (we're a couple, straight out of college, don't really want roommates)? (feel free to pm me instead of taking this thread off topic)
-
I'm 97% in. 1% chance I'll be out of town, and 2% chance The Man physically prevents me from meeting a bunch of crazy dumpster divers off of the internet.

We'll hope for the 97% and ignore the 2%!

Great! We will keep this thread updated as we go, in hopes that you and PitaGirl can join.

We've never done a MMM meet up before, so please share all your tips. Definitely should/can do name tags.

Nanu--we welcome you to our fair city! I'll send a note separately to you. We definitely have learned a lot about living in the city over the past 5 years and are always happy to help acclimate new New Yorkers.

Thanks, that would be great!
And hopefully I'll be able to come to future meetings (are mustachian meetings kinda like AA only people show up and say "Hi, I'm Dave, and I save 75% of my income"?)

Either that, or else they are like AA in that everyone is anonymous. Hi, nice to meet you, I'm "NYCWife."

Hah! I was seriously considering going by MJ.

Totes! I'm in the heights already, just a different one.

Is there another meetup coming soon?
I'm new to the city and to America in general and would like some of the cheese on how to live here and be frugal (if a frugal new yorker's not an oxymoron).

Drakmon and NYCWife had planned on hosting one in the next few weeks - they're moving apartments and were going to announce when they were setup for hosting. Stay tuned, I think they're in the midst of moving.

I'm also aiming to host something soon. Recently moved in a couple of blocks from our usual summer location by the Strand stand in the park. 62nd/Park.
Just feel like I need a little bit more furniture first.
If anyone is up for a meetup weekend of the 28th, I'll host.

Confirmed. We won't be "moved" until Sat 03/21. We're looking forward to opening up our new place! :)
-
Hello fellow NYC Mustachians. I have been in NYC for two years and would love to meet fellow frugal fiends. It would be good to meet up now that the weather is warming up.
-
I'm into hosting as well. but we have to sit on the floor with a blanket like a picnic. we ALL want to host. :)
Is anyone into a mini-meeting, before NYCWife is completely moved, in my place or somewhere outside? I'm interested in meeting some more like minded individuals.
You will all hear hilarious stories about Israel, eat some vegan food made by yours truely (if you are into coming to my place), we can also do play some music together and listen to some records.
-
NYCWife and I have moved! We're ensconced up in Washington Heights, around 160th St. and Broadway. The new place has tons of space, which we're looking forward to filling up with all your smiling faces soon enough.
We'll post an announcement in this thread with an RSVP link, as soon as we've figured out an optimal day for this.
-
Strange question, but I thought I'll throw this out here. I'm visiting the city the week of March 30th (for work reasons primarily), but will be walking through a few neighborhoods as I prep for my move. If anyone wants to show me their favorite place, by all means, send me a PM.
-
I would like to attend a nyc meetup. Thank you to the nice woman on the seven train reading ERE for encouraging me to check the forums.

Whoo, that was me! Hi subway friend.
-
Hi! Yay! If it everrrr warms up here maybe we can plan a meetup picnic at Socrates? So ready for spring! Seems like lots of frugal folk live in queens.
-
Oh yeah, Socrates would be a cool meeting place.
-
Let's do this!
Drakmon and I have officially and fully moved and are ready for company. Anyone want to come check out our new Mustachian digs in Washington Heights?
We'd be open to hosting a gathering next weekend (April 11 or 12) or the following weekend (April 18 or 19). Either of those weekends work for our Mustachian friends?
We have a good amount of seating and a bunch of board games, and an itch to cook in our new spacious kitchen.
Let us know what works and we'll get this up and running.
-
hello! I would definitely be interested... and either weekend would work for me!
-
Oh I like board games! Unfortunately we're only moving to the area (ended up in Jersey City) in July though.
What board games do you have?
-
Board games! Potluck! Yay! I can do the 11th or 12th but not the following weekend.
-
Would love to join, but it'll be the next one. Away for 11-25 this month.
-
I'm free the 18th/19th but away the 11th/12th.
-
I'm in! I think the 12th might not be great and the 11th or 19th would be best, but I don't have anything set in stone right now.
-
We'll attempt to make it, but not sure what our plans are. At least it isn't May haha.
-
I'm good with any one of these dates.
-
Hey all. New member but have lived mustachian for a couple years. I recently organized an ERE NYC meetup and would love to meet up with MMM'ers too! I'm free on any weekend day except for the afternoon/evening of April 12th, so don't schedule it then! :)
FYI: I'm 26 and living in Williamsburg. Yes it's possible to live relatively cheaply here.
-
It sounds like the 11th is the date that the majority of people can make!
If this goes well, we'll plan on having another meetup later in the year.
-
Drakmon, just to confirm: does this mean you're on for hosting an NYC MMMer meetup at your place (Washington Heights) on Apr 11th?
-
That's correct! We're going to set up a form for folks to sign up for potluck-y things, on which we'll post the details (time, address, etc.) of the meetup.
-
Announcing the April 2015 NYC Mustachian Meetup!
(hosted by Drakmon and NYCWife)
When: Saturday, April 11th, 2015 from 1 pm till 6 pm EST
Where: Washington Heights (RSVP for details)
RSVP: https://doodle.com/ir8xxvk28794gzdi
We're hosting a light lunch n' munch potluck at our place! Come to hang out, eat, talk, play board games, whatever!
Feel free to ask questions in this post and I'll be happy to address them here (or via PM, if you prefer).
-
Very excited :) My wife and I moved to NYC from west coast a few months ago. Looking forward to meeting the mustachians out here.
We'll be bringing a side dish (basil mozzarella pasta), beer and sparkling water.
-
Great!
Thanks everyone for signing up! We've got 12 people on the RSVP list (plus one of my friends who wanted to come too), so I'm going to close it up for now, as otherwise we're going to run out of places to sit ;D
I'll be in touch with everyone who RSVPed via PM, since we do not have a door buzzer (yet) I'm going to hand out my cell phone number so you all can call up and I can let you in the building. Feel free to ask any meetup-related questions in this thread, or coordinate with the other participants on what you're bringing :)
We're looking forward to it!
-
I want to come but I don't know what I'm bringing yet.
Further updates as events warrant.
-
Making mac & cheese.

Unfortunately, sign-ups for this meetup are closed due to meeting seating capacity. We'll look forward to seeing you at the next one, though!

Aw, missed my shot. Hope y'all enjoy!

Hey fellow NYC 'stashers!
It was so great to meet those of you who were able to join in our MMM potluck today. Drakmon and I enjoyed getting to know each of you, sampling some tasty food (that was AWESOME mac-and-cheese, Pooperman), and learning some new games (thanks for kindly showing MonkeyJenga and I how to settle Catan, ioseftavi and BB11).
We look forward to meeting again soon--maybe next time at a park or outdoor space now that the weather is warming up.
Enjoy your Sunday,
NYC Wife (and Drakmon)
-
Hello All,
Glad to see there is some activity in the area. My partner and I recently moved here and are hoping to attend the next get-together and meet some new folks.

-
Oh Catan is a great game, wish I could have been there. Once we move to the area my girlfriend and I will likely join

Pitagirl and I had a great time with you all!

Thank you both for hosting, it was a lot of fun! I will never thank robber baron bb11, though. I actually dreamed last night that I was the victor, and this is one reason I shouldn't play board games.
-
@MonkeyJenga LOL, capitalism wins in Catan! :)
Thanks again Drakmon and NYC Wife!! I had a ton of fun. Let's organize another meetup again soon!!
-
Will there be a meetup in May? Perhaps a picnic in Central Park?
-
I'll probably only be able to join for an hour or two, but either one works good for me too.
-
I can probably stop by for a bit too. June works better for me though. Family in town this month ;)
-
I would also be interested to attend. Please do post on the forum, if something is being planned. Thanks!
-
I'm out next weekend, but potentially in for June.
-
Is there a date set? How many people? what are the details? thanks!
-
I can't personally this weekend (doesn't mean you shouldn't have it)
Keep me posted on June!
-
This Sunday is perfect for me. I am in if others want to meetup. Noon at Central Park will be great. I would also be up for a second meetup next month, so don't think missing out on this one would prohibit future dates. The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned. :)
-
Well, we make 2, which is technically a group. Anyone else who wants to stop by for a bit is welcome.
I can also come but would like to meet a bigger group.......... if the group becomes a little bigger, count me in. I will come along with my wife and 2 years old daughter.
-
I'll be moving to Jersey City in late June/early July, so if there's a meetup for mid-July or later I might show up.
-
Count me in for Sunday. At least for an hour or so.
I'll bring a friend.
-
Yeah I'll be around on Sunday around noon if people can put down a firm meetup. (I am not a good organizer, otherwise I would do it myself.) Was there something at noon near Belvedere Castle in Central Park? :)
-
Yes sounds like we have 5 confirmed (and Vivek440 would make 6) for noon on Sunday near Belvedere Castle.
That area does get crowded though. Anyone have a conspicuous article of clothing they can commit to wearing or something, so that people know who to look for? :)
Thinking about it more, I have a bright green Red Sox hat that will stand out. I'll wear that. Some else feel free to assist as well haha.
-
I will be around on Sunday. I'll head on down and hang out for a bit.
-
@Drakmon Sounds great!
@MonkeyJenga Not too sure. I think either is fine.
-
I have made some other plans for Sunday now. Please count me out. Apologies for the inconvenience!
-
We're at the great lawn and can't see anyone. Are we really confused or just early?
-
I'm just leaving now. Sorry for the delay.
-
Good times. Nice to meet some new folks!
-
Good to know that you people had a successful meet up :-) Sad that I could not come! How many folks were there? When are we meeting next?
-
I had fun! And lesson learned on location: do not sit right by a baseball diamond. We narrowly avoided a stray ball.
Vivek, there were 6 people yesterday. Anyone want to take the lead on a June event?
-
Vivek, there were 6 people yesterday. Anyone want to take the lead on a June event?
Wow.... decent gathering!!
Yes we should plan something in June with enough advance notice.......... Anybody ready to take the lead to organize one?? :-)
-
I can take the lead since I couldn't make the last one.
Meet in central park again? How bout the area north of Sheep meadow behind Le Pain Quotidien. There are some nice shady trees there.
-
I created a doodle poll with all the Saturdays in June. I think you can just put your name in. No need for an account.
http://doodle.com/eu6giyzfm7mpcz5a
-
Now this is called organization :-)
I am on my way to fill the doodle poll !
-
DRAT, I missed the last few meetups. I thought I was subscribed to this thread but I guess not. Filled out the doodle!
-
Hey, been reading MMM forever but never thought about the forum... just joined and found this! I responded to the Doodle, yay~!
-
@chatche - I would suggest to freeze a date now so that people can block their calendar! Do you have any venue in mind?
-
I've been living in NYC for a bit over a year now. Missed some earlier meetups, but I would like to come to one. Added myself to the doodle.
-
I was just thinking, if the polls are neck-to-neck or pretty close, please consider selecting a Saturday over a Sunday as this would allow long-distance commuters a little more wiggle-room to commute back home in time to get prepped before the work week begins anew.
FYI, for those who enjoy frequenting more than one financial web ring forum meetup, there may be a conflict for the 6/27 date option for members also attending the NYC Bogleheads meeting at 2:30 pm at the Sony Atrium that same day ( fyi for any interested party: https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=161359 ).
Looking forward to meeting fellow Mustachians!

The link provided by you doesn't have any details on the meet up. Would you have any details?
-
Hi Vivek,
While my initial thought was that a MMM on 6/27 would create a conflict because of the Boglehead meeting on the same day, if the MMM meet-up meeting time is at noon and we decide to meet at the Sony Atrium as the location, this could create the opportunity for super gung-ho financial web ring followers and/or bloggers to go from one meeting straight to the other back-to-back. The same location would certainly make things smooth for those of us with less experience commuting in NYC, but I have no idea how this location would work for everyone though.
Sorry I couldn't find any threads with most recent details on the Bogleheads (disclaimer: have never been to a MMM meet-up yet but I know first-hand that the Boglehead meetings tend to be very technical... personally I'm a big fan of both approaches which I think are complementary - one focused on frugality and lifestyle optimization, the other on low-cost modern portfolio theory approaches to investing), but I do paste at the end of the thread meeting times they announced earlier this year just in case there is interest in scheduling MMM meetups in a manner coordinated with the Boglehead meetups. My only hope is that we keep MMM meetups on Saturdays since I don't live in New York so weekdays would not be possible, and Saturdays would be a lot easier than Sundays because of the commute.
In either case, try emailing: boglehead-nyc@googlegroups.com to see if you get a response to be on the mailing list if you are interested, and as promised, at the end of this post I append the tentative calendar for the year to distributed to members of the mailing list some time ago.
Thoughts on holding the MMM session at the Sony Atrium on June 27th at noon (not sure how long MMM meetups go, any chance they would go over, or good spacing)?
Here goes:
Saturday, June 27, 2015. Start time: 2:30 pm. Location: Sony Atrium, 550 Madison Avenue. Topic: Undecided.
Thursday, August 20, 2015. Start time: 6:30 pm. Location: Sony Atrium, 550 Madison Avenue. Topic: Undecided.
Saturday, October 24, 2015. Start time: 2:30 pm. Location: Sony Atrium, 550 Madison Avenue. Topic: Undecided.

Thanks for the info FrugalThrift!
-
Sounds great MonkeyJenga.
No problem vivek440, perhaps I'll see you there!
-
Sat June 27th at noon it is. I closed out the poll.
I like @MonkeyJenga's idea of meeting in central park, with the backup being Sony Atrium.
I was thinking of the area north of Sheep meadow behind Le Pain Quotidien. There are some nice shady trees there.
-
Sounds great Chatche.
-
Good to see that we have zeroed in on the date and venue :-)
@Chatche - I don't remember, when we polled on Doodle, did we share our email ids? If yes, could you share the email ids of folks planning to attend this meet? I essentially want to create an email distribution list so that everybody can share a quick introduction with each other. Just trying to break the ice before we meet :-)
-
@vivek440, just names, no emails.
-

Folks who plan to attend the 27th June meet up - Please message me your email ids. Thanks!
-
To add to MonkeyJenga's response, I'd probably leave a 4 hour block open for the MMM meetup, considering people will not all arrive on time. Of course it's okay to leave earlier.
-
Unfortunately, Drakmon and I have family in town the last few weeks of June. We DID have an impromptu meetup with MonkeyJenga this Saturday as we all waited for the ferry to Governor's Island for the Jazz Age Lawn Party. So, that will have to be our "June fix" for our MMM meetup.
We'll be back and ready for action in July. :)
Have fun!
-
hi, I'm new to the forum, but I'd like to attend the meetup on June 27. Do i just show up?
-
also, if it's in central park/sony atrium -- exactly where? how to find you guys?
-
hi, I'm new to the forum, but I'd like to attend the meetup on June 27. Do i just show up?
Hi there, and welcome! Yes, you just show up. If Central Park, it will be the area north of Sheep Meadow behind Le Pain Quotidien. If it's raining, the Sony Atrium. I can bring my fuschia umbrella, that worked well as an identifier last time. Anyone else have a marker if I show up late?
Google Map link for Central Park spot. (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Le+Pain+Quotidien/@40.7725326,-73.9731988,18z/data=!4m5!1m2!2m1!1ssheep+meadow!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0xd84cc631d91d2adc)
Also, people may want to bring a food dish to share. Everyone loves food.
-
Just checking if this is still on. :)
-
Yep, we are definitely meeting Saturday!! :)
-
Rain forecast isn't looking too good... but just in case it doesn't, below is the area I was thinking of meeting at.
What do you guys think about meeting at the IBM atrium in the case of rain? Looks like it has a bunch of tables. It is across the street from the Sony atrium at 590 Madison.
I'll bring name tags, and a sign with a pic of a mustache to put at the table.
Probably a good idea to bring lunch for yourself since we're meeting at noon.
I'm gonna bring watermelon as a snack to share.
-
I am bringing a dozen of home baked chocolate chip cookies...
So is it it all set for IBM atrium?
-
I'm fine with the IBM atrium if it rains. BUT it does look like the rain won't start until at least 4 PM, so are we doing CP or IBM?
Oh, also, I'll have some fruit and a small amount of non-homemade cookies. (Damn you bklyncyclist for upstaging me!)
-
Sorry MonkeyJenga :)
I am fine with either of the atria or the Central Park...
Just want everyone be on the same page.
Else, we'll have people showing up at 3 places.
Someone needs to make the call...
-
We probably shouldn't risk the rain. I don't like changing locations last minute, but I'm going to executive decision it and hope enough people saw the note about the IBM atrium.
I will be going to the IBM atrium. Hopefully at least some people make it there. I'll also check this thread when I get over there to see where people ended up.
-
I'll see everyone (first time!) at the IBM atrium!
-
I agree. Better to not risk the rain. It was drizzling a bit this morning.
IBM Atrium (590 Madison) it is!
-
I will be there around 1 pm (first time). I will bring hummous and carrots.
-
On my way over! See everyone there.
-
Pitagirl and I are leaving now. We should be there in about an hour.
-
I'm leaving now with my wife. Should be about an hour.
-
Nice to see you all there. We have such a large group, that it might be better to have something like a private Facebook group for us. That way we can toss idea out, make events, etc.
-
It was great to chat with everyone at the meet up today. 18 total by my count.
I created a google email group (listserv) for us so we can communicate by email easier. Click the link below, then click "subscribe to this group" if you'd like to join.

Today was awesome! Would love to see that picture too :)
-
It was fun meeting so many people! Kudos to FrugalThrift for suggesting we sync it up with the Bogleheads. I think this worked out to 9 hours straight of finance and philosophy talk.
-
Was great seeing everyone this weekend! I also think it'd be great to have a FB group or something to facilitate regular meetings. It might help attract those who aren't forum members as well.
-
Hi everybody,
I think it's about time we scheduled our next meet-up.
I created a doodle with Sat/Sundays in July and Aug.
http://doodle.com/x7qnyag8ch485988 (http://doodle.com/x7qnyag8ch485988)
Since our central park location got kiboshed by the rain last time, we could give it another go. There was also some talk about meeting in Prospect park.
~Phil
-
Awesome! Thanks for setting up a Doodle--survey completed. Drakmon and I would be happy to attend at either location: Central or Prospect Park.
-
Only if I can bring my almost 6-month old....
-
Only if I can bring my almost 6-month old....
DO IT. Babies are cute.
Agreed. Also they are always minimalists. :P
-
Can anyone to come to a meetup? I'd like to if the schedule works out.
-
So, should we call a date? The doodle has 9 people for this Saturday, or 8 for August 1 or 22.
-
Let's do this Saturday, in the park if the weather is good (which it's supposed to be).
I personally like the spot in front of "the Dairy visitor center". It's far south in the park so it's easy to relocate to indoors if necessary. Any other spot in the park is fine for me too though.
-
Will not be able to come this Saturday. How about the next one on the 22nd of August?
-
Don't think I can come this Saturday either. What time are you guys shooting for?
-
I'd be happy to do the August 22 meeting as well for everyone that can't make this weekend. The Doodle indicated noon for all the dates, which works fine for me.
-
Sounds good to me. I closed the poll. This Sat the 25th @ noon it is! (Central park: in front of dairy visitor center)
I still have name tags from the last meet-up, so I can bring those again, along with my mustache sign.
I'm unavailable on Aug 22nd, but if that works for everyone else go for it :)
-
Hi!
I'm not local to NYC, but I happen to be in NYC on Saturday. Is it OK if I show up?
-
Of course you can come! I'm going to bring cookies if my newborn cooperates.
:)
-
A note for future meetups:
Can we vary dates/times? I am working a new side job where I expect to be busy during the day every Saturday for the forseeable future. So it'd be great if we can alternate Saturdays/Sundays or even times during the week to prevent situations where someone is unable to attend every meetup. Yes, I realize I'm selfishly bringing this up because it affects me, but... could possibly help others too. :)
In other words, how about August 23rd instead of 22nd?
-
I can't come this Saturday (sorry if I could via doodle) but August 22/23 should be free.
I wish I could see the cute little baby :(
-
I'm camping, y'all have fun!
-
3 hours since touchdown at JFK. Will probably be jet lagged out of my mind tomorrow, but I still plan on showing up. :)
-
I'll be there with some frozen fruit to share.

I vote for a mondo two-day lawn party. We can tussle with the park rangers when they try to kick us out at night, things will get out of hand, we'll get sent to Rikers, and there we can spread the gospel as insiders and revolutionize the prison and rehabilitation system.
-
We're on our way. Should be there in 15 minutes.
We have a blanket with frogs on it; also a t-shirt with a bicycle.
-
Thanks everyone, it was nice meeting you all! Didn't expect to meet countrymen.... :)

As promised:
- TodayTix (http://todaytix.com/refer/YHHUA) for discount musical tickets. Enter YHHUA at checkout and get $20 off the first order

It was good to meet everyone/see you again! At the end of the day there was a suggestion that next time we choose some moderate activity to break up the sitting. A few possibilities:
- Pick two nice areas along the river paths. Start at one and walk to the other sometime
- The Ramble in Central Park has nice, meandering walking paths
- The parks far uptown have big hills that could make for a nice climb, like Fort Tryon
Anyone else have good ideas for the August meetup?
-
Good to see that the get together was successful and it seems everybody had a great time.
Since last couple of weeks I have been traveling a lot and that's why could attend the last get together (Inspite of confirming that I would attend). Apologies for the same!
Hopefully I will make to the next get together.

I'll be there with some frozen fruit to share.

Hi All,
I'd like to invite this group to a free midweek discussion on MMM on Wednesday, August 18 at 7:00pm on the Upper East Side. The event is hosted by the All Souls Unitarian Young Adults group and will also feature dinner. We expect there will be people with a wide range of familiarity with MMM principles, and I would love to see more people who know and understand FI principles. The discussion will be hosted by Ian and myself (Laurel), both MMM enthusiasts.
Details:
MMM Evening Discussion
August 18 at 7:00pm
All Souls Unitarian Church
1157 Lexington Ave
New York
(go through the courtyard on the right side of the church and the person at the desk will buzz you in and tell you where to go)
Official Blurb:
Laurel and Ian will lead a conversation on the intersection of consumerism and spirituality, drawing on the lessons of the financial independence community and with the goal of deepening our relationship with the material. We will discuss the ideas of ERE, Mister Money Mustache, and others.
Hope you can make it! I've been going events with this group for years, they are a friendly and open minded bunch.
Laurel
-
I'd love to do the dinner! Quick question: is it Tues the 18th or Weds the 19th?

August 18th is a Tuesday. Did you mean August 19th?
-
Wonderful! And sorry, I did mean August 19th instead of the 18th.
-
Wonderful! And sorry, I did mean August 19th instead of the 18th.
SWEET if it's the 19th I can go. And it sounds interesting.
-
easypeasy, if you say free dinner, I say how high? (Except I probably can't go, slash don't have a spiritual bone in my body.)
I don't think a date/location was ever chosen for the weekend of Aug 22/23. If it's the 23rd, I can go, and I'd be up for a hike.
-
I figured free dinner would appeal to this crowd :) This group is pretty lightly religious, so don't be intimidated if you aren't into that sort of thing. Ian and I only plan to focus on MMM topics.
-
I'm an atheist, but I think I would be willing to check it out if that is okay.
I am definitely up for August 23rd.
-
Here is the official facebook invite for August 19: https://www.facebook.com/events/1775886942638235/
bb11 - you are most certainly welcome. I'd guess about a third of the group are atheists.
On the topic of August 22 hiking, I started writing some ideas and this ended up as a download of some of my best hiking trips inside and outside of NYC. Hope it's useful (and I'd be interested in other peoples' lists), although this does nothing to narrow down a location for August 22.
On Metro North (downside is the tickets are $10-20 per person):
1) Beacon NY - you can walk through town from the Metro North station to the Beacon Mountain trail head. Challenging, beautiful hike.
2) Appalachian Trail - A couple of Metro North trains stop at the AT on weekends. This is a relatively easy hike.
3) Sleepy Hollow/Ossining NY - There is an Aqueduct Trail running through several towns on the Hudson River. The stretch from Ossining to Sleepy Hollow is one of the best bits. I recommend starting in Ossining so you can hang out in Sleepy Hollow after the walk. This is a pretty walk but not challenging since the trail is flat.
Inside NYC (more crowded, but cheaper):
4) Fort Tyron Park - Lovely park at the north of Manhattan with good hiking trails. I did this in the very early spring, so I'm not sure how crowded it is in the summer.
5) Central, Prospect, and Riverside Park all have nice 'wilderness' areas. This doesn't quite qualify as hiking, but each park is lovely.
6) Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx has nice trails
Other cool cheap things to do:
7) Free kayaking is often just paddling around in a circle, but the LIC Boathouse also sponsors free kayaking expeditions. I've done a bunch of trips with this group and it's downright extraordinary to see the city from the water.
8) Governor's Island - Fun, quirky, great place for a picnic
Cheers!
-
I will be attending tomorrow as well. See everyone there!
-
Oh, yeah, should we bring anything?
-
Post to follow for the future :)
-
Nope, no need to bring anything. See you tomorrow!
-
Anybody coming tonight want a keyboard? We're getting rid of some new ones at work. USB, not wireless.
-
Someday I might be able to make one of these... Sooooomeeedaaayyyyy.
-
Thank you, Laurel (and Ian if you could pass it along)! That was a lot of fun!
-
Of course! Thanks for coming and hopefully I'll see some or all of you soon at another get-together soon.
-
Yes, thanks again easypeasy! Great meeting you, David, and the baby.
Thank you, Laurel (and Ian if you could pass it along)! That was a lot of fun!
WHO WERE YOU?
-
Yes, thanks again easypeasy! Great meeting you, David, and the baby.
Thank you, Laurel (and Ian if you could pass it along)! That was a lot of fun!
WHO WERE YOU?
Seconded! I didn't notice anyone else there....
Thanks Easypeasy!
I can't go to any meetups this weekend but would like to do another meetup soon, if anyone has interest in getting together in the next couple weeks.
-
Is there a meetup this weekend?
-
Not that I know of. I'd personally be happy to meet people in central park at 1pm tomorrow if anyone's interested.
-
This weekend doesn't work for me, but if anyone wants to meet next Saturday that might work
-
Next Sunday is better for me - I can't next Saturday.
-
Posting to be in the loop for future meetups :)
-
I can also do this Sunday. At least I'm almost positive I can.
-
Central Park Sunday sounds good to me.
-
You know what they say, three's a crowd, four's a party.
1PM Sunday? Luna, I hope your gf can make it as well!
-
My wife and I are also in for Sunday.
-
Dang, I'm gonna be out of town this weekend. Next one for sure :)
-
Hi All - this is my first post here. I've been reading MMM for years, but just got inspired from the last post on community to try to get to know some like-minded people here in NYC. Anyway, I can likely make 1pm on Sunday. Where in Central Park do you typically meet?
-
Fellow noob considering joining on Sunday!
-
Will have to skip this sunday... wedding preparations take precedence!
-
Everyone cool with the below location? We went there last time.
Let's do this Saturday, in the park if the weather is good (which it's supposed to be).

Yup, that location works for me.
-
Where's "the Dairy visitor center"? It sounds fine to me :) Sunday at 1pm.
-
I like the dairy visitor center too.
See attached for location.
-
Jumping in on this one! Woo!
-
I'll bring my fuchsia umbrella again.
ETA: What's a struggle toaster? Or is it an exhortation? ("Struggle, Toaster!")
-
I'm here sitting with MJ by her pink umbrella. It's pink, don't let her fancy words fool you....
-
Great seeing everyone today! For the quitters who left early, you should know you missed out on free sandwiches and sangria from that kid's party.
(I am taking the high ground and ignoring bb11.)
-

Had an awesome time today everyone :)
-
Thanks luna. I'll give those changes a try.
-
Great meeting everyone today. Too bad I missed the free food and drink.
-
Also, when we talked about means testing for social security, it looks like it was specifically a Christie idea and actually focused on income rather than net worth!

Interesting that this idea would come from him.
This is obviously a bit political, but to go back to our discussion at the meetup, I found an article that pretty perfectly sums up my view on why inheritances are immoral. This would be why I think estate taxes should be up near 100% and my hypothetical future children will not be receiving much of any inheritance from me, no huge sums saved up in their 529's, etc.
https://medium.com/@AbiWilks/it-s-inheritance-that-is-immoral-not-inheritance-tax-33ff91791f03
Tl;dr:
Jemima and Edward have no moral claim to the money they didn’t earn. If they’re to get it, it needs to be justified based on consequences. Returning to the thought experiment at the start of this article, who could really believe that the best possible thing you could do with £1,000,000 is to give it to a couple of affluent, successful 30-somethings?
‘Taking’ the money from them wouldn’t be the immoral act, giving it to them would be.
Inheritance isn’t only immoral because it is a waste of resources that could be better spent elsewhere — on schools, health, social care and any number of other things. It’s also actively harmful to allow wealth to be passed down in families through the generations.
It’s harmful because it’s promoting inequality that can be justified neither morally nor pragmatically.
It doesn’t make society function better if some people are born into privilege and others into poverty. In contrast, it tends to mean you end up with important roles filled not by the most able, but by the most able from within a small pool of candidates with lots of social advantages.
People have no intrinsic claim to the fruits of their ancestors’ labour. Even without inheriting, Jemima and Edward have already benefited extensively from being born into money. Nobody could reasonably argue that is because they’re somehow more deserving than a person brought up in social care, for example.
Despite the talk about social mobility from all major political parties, how rich a person in the UK is likely to be as an adult is massively dependent on the circumstances they are born into. Inheritance plays a huge, very obvious role in this.
People who already have money are much better equipped to make more money. As inheritance is passed down from generation to generation, wealth becomes more and more concentrated in certain families.
Just giving the £1,000,000 to two random people who grew up in poverty would still be preferable to letting Jemima and Edward have it. They already benefited enormously from their parents’ wealth while they were still alive. If they benefit again, the inequality is only amplified.
-
I wasn't there for the full discussion of course. I guess I'm not opposed to taxing inheritance income like regular income once it's over the lifetime gift amount.
As to the point that the children have already benefited from growing up with well-off parents, would you feel differently if the parents died while the children were still minors?
-
Following so I can know when the next meet up is :)

What justification is there for gifts not being treated like regular income as well?
Not that the giver should pay the tax (as is currently the case, and makes no sense), but that the receiver pays it.
In fact, both morally and pragmatically, shouldn't money one earns by doing productive labor be taxed less than any form of unearned or passive income, since it took work to earn money and the product of that work directly benefits society?
Of course now we have the exact opposite situation, where almost all forms of unearned income are taxed less so that the tax code is specifically working against mobility and helps those who already have enough pay (proportionately) less

I spun this off to its own thread :)

Ok thanks. I replied to Bakari's response on that thread.
When is the next meetup? Let's do something in September. :)

I'd be up for hosting a potluck dinner at my apartment in Queens again. I can reasonably host 10 people. Let me know if there's interest. I'm out of town starting September 29 and then the entire month of October is bad for me, so it would need to be before that.
I am definitely up for it.
-
Ooh, this Sunday would actually be quite good for me.
-
This weekend doesn't work for me, but next weekend (19-20) would probably work
-
This weekend won't work for me either. The next two weekends would be fine though.
-

Please count me in! I will be coming along with my wife and 2.5 years old daughter (Are kids allowed?)
-
Queens resident here. Excited at the prospect of meeting other mustachians. @serpentstooth - have you decided on hosting this month?
-
I am meeting a different group of friends at 2pm at Central Park Sunday so unfortunately it would be hard to work in a meetup for me. Saturday at noon or 1pm I could probably do.
PS: I'm more fun to hang out with than MonkeyJenga! :P
-
I might be able to join this weekend.
-
I'm in for something on Sunday. Going to Maker Faire on Saturday!
-
I'm out of town Sunday. I'm in town Saturday, but, you know, the pope.
-
I'm in for meeting up on Sat or Sun.
-
That's true. Also my plans have shifted and Sunday is objectively better for me as well, as long as it's fairly early. Anyone down to meet at 11 or noon?
-

Frankly, the pope shenanigans makes Sunday an objectively better choice. We have been meeting in Central Park when the weather's nice, in front of the Dairy visitor center.
I'm in, and I vote 11AM to force me to get out of bed somewhat early :)
I would love to do 11am.
-
11am works for me too. Meet in front of the dairy visitor center as usual?
-
See you all there.
-
I'm going to try to head over, but it looks like I'll get there a little after 12 instead.
-
A bit late, but heading over.
-
Anyone here yet? If so, anyway to recognize each other?
-
Great chatting with everyone today.
Here is the podcast interview with Jacob Lund Fisker on Radical Personal Finance I mentioned.

-
I had a great time today. It was nice to meet everyone.
-
How about a completely anti-mustachian meetup at the World Series?
-
GO METS
More seriously though, a meetup at someone's place to watch the playoffs might be interesting.
-
Hi, gang. Does anyone want to meet up with a visiting Texan on Monday 11/16?
I am visiting friends in NYC and (and Hartford CT) Thursday through Sunday, but my flight home leaves Tuesday because it's cheaper that way. So I will be touristing solo on Monday. Putting the free in freelancing, so to speak! Am up for any good frugal ideas.
Have only been to NYC a few days before, though on two or three occasions. Easily entertained - eg, for me "Meet me for lunch at your favorite Costco" is as good as "meet me at your favorite neighborhood falafel joint", "picnic at X Park", etc. Will be wearing running shoes instead of my cowboy boots.
-
Not sure if I'll be available but putting in a vote for riding the (free) staten Island ferry in the evening. You can bring your own drinks/snacks onboard.
The met, natural history museum are both open on mondays I believe and are pay what you will.
-
Norabird - awesome! I've never ridden the ferry before. It should be great for views. The Met and the Natural History Museum are both worthy bucket list items. This is going to be cool.
-
I'd be up for a museum visit on Monday, but I come with a coordinating six month old, so if you want me to stay home, that's understandable.
-
Hi, Serpentstooth. Six month olds and coordinating are fine. I have co-fostered babies and toddlers (my girlfriend of the time was the official parent) so I understand. It will add to the richness of the day. Also your writing is fabulous so I would be delighted to meet you in person, and any other family members who join, if this comes to pass. I will PM my contact info.
-
I'm up for any evening activities that this might lead to.
Was a while ago since my last Staten Island ferry ride.
-
I might be up for something on the 16th as well
-
Hi, all. I am planning to be at the Musuem of Natural History most of the afternoon. Unless someone suggests otherwise, will board the Staten Island Ferry for the first trip from Manhattan that departs after 6:00 pm. Feel free to join!
-
PS. Maybe it's not Mustachian, but I am bringing cookies to share on the ferry...
😀
-
In reply to messages asking where to meet, I suggest inside the South Ferry building, in front of the water fountain and restrooms.
I will be displaying my artitistic skills there in form of a hand drawn MUSTAChE SIGN (Sharpie on Manila Folder, hand held), starting at 5:50, intending to board the 6:15 ferry as planned.
-
Sad to miss this, have fun!
-
Also sad to have missed this! Maybe we could get another meetup together soonish? Not sure what everyone's schedules are like for the holidays, but we seem to have a good amount of people following this thread :)
-
Norabird and StruggleToaster, sad to have missed you!
Nonetheless, it was a fun event, and not just because of the Magnificent Mustache Sign that was displayed. We took the ferry to Staten Island as planned, enjoying beautiful views of the City at night from the harbor while chatting away. Then we explored on foot near the trrminal building on Staren Island, finding the gorgeous if sobering 9/11 monument there. Picture experiments and more conversation ensued, followed by more fine views on the return trip. Sharing of cookies was also involved.
-
That 9/11 memorial is surprisingly lovely. So glad you took the ferry rec!
-
Hey everyone, at the end of the Prospect Park meetup I volunteered to host a potluck at my place in December. So if y'all are up to come to Bed-Stuy we can enjoy food, games, and my wondrous company. Monkey Jenga can attest to how wonderful I am.
I'm supposed to make a Doodle Pool but I have no idea how to do that on my phone. What days work for you guys?
-
As of now I'm free most weekends except for Christmas.
Monkey Jenga can attest to how wonderful I am.
He's very charming, as long as you're ok with socialism and 100% terrible people.
-

I should be pretty free with the exception of this coming weekend and Christmas.

Basically this. I think Meowkins is coming up to NYC sometime soon with her husband. Hopefully we can have a nice, frozen meetup :).

Monkey Jenga is half right. I don't know that "socialist" is accurate. At least it's simplistic. I've never used the term to describe myself. And I'm only 30% terrible. There have been big improvements on that front.
How about the 19th or the 20th? That is probably the best weekend for me, and no one has objected to that.
-
I'm out of town from Dec 18 :/
Have fun!
-
Hi all,
I just moved to NYC a month ago from Houston. I live in Brooklyn (Bay Ridge) so Bed-Sty shouldn't be a problem, if you're OK with a newbie (to NYC) coming.
-

Of course! You would be more than welcome. :)
-
Not sure I can do the weekend of the 18th, but I'm down with board games sometime in Jan (and could possibly host). Oinkette, definitely go!
-
Afternoon of the 13th miiiiight work. Holiday season: not easy for scheduling!
-
My girlfriend and I could possibly do the weekend of 12/13, and we're definitely up for board games! (in fact, we have a nice collection ourselves)
-
I can make Dec 12 or Dec 13!
-
The 12th works for me! :-)
-
I unfortunately can't do the 12th or the 13th, so it couldn't be hosted at my place. Maybe someone else wants to host then?
I think the 19th is the only day I can host this month. I'm also down to host in January instead.
-
Hey NY friends! NYCWife and Drakmon here--we'd love to join in the Dec. meetup bandwagon. We are "game" for either weekend (heh). If everyone decides on the weekend bb11 is out of town, we'd be happy to host boardgames up at our place again (Washington Heights). We'd also love to return to our old Brooklyn stomping grounds again and visit bb11 in Bed-Stuy if the 18th works out better.
So, our answer is: either weekend is good for us.
-
Hi folks- brooklynite here. I'm new to the forums (but not to stashing). I'm traveling this month but I hope to catch the next meet up!
-
I won't be able to make the Dec meet-up. Prepping / packing this weekend for a move. Then flying to CA for Christmas.
-
Yeah I'll host in January.
-
My girlfriend and I might come tomorrow, not sure yet.
-
Babytooth and I might come.
-
Happy 2016 all! I saw earlier about a potential January meetup, I would love to come! Maybe we could talk about our goals for the year?
How about Saturday the 16th?
-
Looking forward to the January meetup!
-
I'm new to the group, count me in for a January meet up on the 16th. Looking forward to meeting you all!
-
I'm up for January 16. Even if it (finally) snows!
-
I can also do Jan 16. Now the big question: can bb11 do Jan 16?
If he's not available for potluck hosting, anyone else on here who can take over?
This is the MMM forum. Let's have some badassity in Central Park. Enjoy the winter outdoors in shorts and tee-shirts!
-
Too cold!
I'm away the 16th, but could possibly host a game day on the 23rd/24th if others can supply the game of their choosing.
-
My place is still a mess from moving and lacks chairs. But I can likely host a meetup in Feb.
-
Hey. I can't get Doodle started on my work computer. I.... could possibly do a potluck on the 16th, although my sister is visiting from California next week. She is doing some job interviews, looking to move to NYC in February. So I'm not really sure if that's what she'll want to do. Nobody wants to do the 23rd/24th or 30th/31st? I am open those weekends except for a birthday party the night of the 30th.
-
Let's volunteer MJ for the afternoon of the 30th!
-
I live in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and can host a potluck on the 16th if people are willing to come down here. I'm right off the Franklin 2/3/4/5 stop at Bedford and Eastern Parkway. 23/24 and 30 all work as well, but not the 31st.
-
That's my stop too, Jon!
I can do 16, 23, 24, 30, 31. (Wow,my social life is a little slow this month!)
-
This is the MMM forum. Let's have some badassity in Central Park. Enjoy the winter outdoors in shorts and tee-shirts!
spend $2.50 on a subway ride?! no way!!
-

But it's totally OK for us in NJ to pay $8 each way? ;)
-
If the "standard" location in Central Park is close to people's preference I can offer hosting at my place on the 16th. It's a few minutes by foot from our standard meadow.
Edit: removed address
-
Sounds great - luna hosts on the 16th as a good central location for everyone.
How about if we get 5 +1s for the 16th we make it happen? And lunch or dinner?
I'm a +1 and say lunch
-
I'm in for the 16th and vote lunch!
-
Lunch on the 16th works for me :)
-
My apartment can host either one.
-
I am a lurker but would like to do lunch on the 16th ^^
Sent from my XT1049 using Tapatalk
-
I'm good for the 16th and can do either lunch or dinner. Is this a potluck deal or BYOL thing?
-
Is anyone going from NJ? I might have to figure out the bus schedule.
-
I'm in for Jan 16. Details?
-
I believe I could stop by on the 16th for a little while as well, but will have to confirm over the next couple days.
-
What was decided for the 16th? I'm coming back to town that day, so may or may not be able to make it
-
I don't think there was any consensus regarding pot-luck or bring-your-own; personally I don't have an opinion. (I'm mainly at the meetups for the talking anyway)
Edit: removed address
-
I think we should just do bring your own food - I bet a lot of people will be traveling a long while and at least for me it'd be tough to prep and carry something for a lot of people. 1pm this Saturday at luna's sounds great!
-
And... I'll apparently be out of town this weekend as well for a funeral :'(
-
Great. I'll be there on the 16th. Bring my own lunch. Did someone mention a specific time?
-
Somebody mentioned 1pm and that works for me.
-
1:00 is great!
-
I'm but a humble lurker from NJ but I'd love to come to this and meet you all, if that's cool.
-
1pm sounds good to me as well. If I'm ambitious I'll bake some cookies to bring.
-
I am coming in from NJ if anyone wants to meet up at Port Authority. I can be at PA around 12:30 and then we can walk from there.
-
Also a lurker. I moved to Jersey City a few months ago and would love to join for lunch tomorrow.
-
Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.
-
It was great seeing everyone yesterday!
I can host the next meetup and my place in Long Island City next month. Feb 27th or 28th (Sat or Sun) work best for me.
~Phil
-
I'm hoping to make the next one - I went home sick on Friday and have spent an extraordinary amount of time sleeping this weekend. I hope everybody had a great time!
-
It was great having everyone over yesterday.
(And for any future hosts: this group was amazing in the minimal impact to the apartment. Took less than ten minutes to clean after everyone left. Thanks!)
-
I had a great time as well, and thanks again for hosting @luna!
Feb 27th for me. I am all kinds of busy on the 28th. ALL KINDS.
Also, what if we have a theme next time? Or someone does like a quick lightning talk about a book they read or something?!
-
Let's do Sat 2/27 then.
I think 5 min lightning talks would be great. If anyone would like to do one let me know.
-
hey all, new here but would love to meet up on the 27th if it's later in the afternoon/evening
-
We meet at noon, but hang out until 4 or 5 usually. So feel free to come by whenever is convenient :)
-
I might be able to do the 27th.
-
I can probably do the 27th.
-
Hey everyone!
I'm new here, but have waded into this journey since a few months ago. Would love to meet everyone! 27th would work for me too.
-
Sat the 27th is coming up. Meetup at my apartment in Long Island City is still on for noon. I'll get some snacks but people should bring their own lunch as usual.
Private message me if you'd like to come and I'll give you the address. Apartment isn't too big so I'm gonna cap it at 12.
-
Can't make Saturdays due to other commitments :(
See you at the next meetup!
-
I will be attending the meetup today, should get there around noon or thereabouts. See everyone there!
-
It was great having everyone over on Sat! Looking forward to some nicer weather at the next meetup.
-

Thanks for hosting! It was a fun time as always.
-
I'm in for the 20th!
-
I can do the 26th or 27th.

Last summer, I happened to visit NYC. After a number of visits to the Big Apple I felt rather confident in knowing the city, just like this guy:
https://medium.com/@yurivictor/new-york-city-an-insiders-behind-the-scenes-guide-to-neighborhoods-fashion-food-people-and-seo-87a10331e89b
As can be seen a few pages back in this thread I joined a meetup - and it was fun. I arrived first, and I didn't know any real life names... and I didn't dare go up to the parties on the lawn asking if anyone was a snake-something or a monkey-someone... :) And once I found the company, I discovred that of the five first people to show up, three were Swedish. Weird. Hi Luna!
Oh well. This summer I'm going back, and therefore I suggest a (preliminary) meetup on July 23rd, sometime around noon. Let's decide more details when it get's closer. And the details may be that we choose another time or day. :)
Cheers,
The Tourist
-
Sounds like a fine day for a meet-up! Putting it on my calendar.
-
Hey lemanfan,
Let's meet again on July 23rd (preliminarily).
-
For a March meetup I can do 19 or 26.
If the weather stays good, I recommend a park as well. If not I can host again.
-
Let's do central park on the 19th, 1 pm in front of the dairy c visitor center. There's no good dates for everyone, but a few people can do that one.
Anyone else who's free, speak up!
Edited to change date, because Sunday is supposed to snow.
I'm going to try and come, Babytooth permitting.
-
I'll be in the AMNH at this (mostly) free Earth-Sun event if anyone wants to come!
http://www.amnh.org/calendar/sun-earth-day
-
I can come (probably a bit late). Don't want to mess with anyone's biking plans (MJ) but am happy to host inside in Harlem if it gets too freezing. I know, inside heating is soft, but... just an offer.
-
I am more biking to Harlem, kelsey!
If Luna is still coming, his apartment is nearby if it gets too cold.
See everyone soon! If my bike commute doesn't kill me.
I can't make it after all.
-
Ok I'm here in purple with a bike... Where are folks
-
Hi all,
Monstermonster is in town the weekend of May 13th, and we are using that as an excuse to have a NYC meetup.
We can figure out timing as it gets closer, but we're hoping to have a get together on Saturday, May 14th at my apartment in Harlem. It's super convenient to the 2, 3, B, and C lines, as well as the M60 bus if you're coming from Queens. Significant others and kids are welcome, although there is a large hypoallergenic dog in the apartment (he loves both significant others and kids).
-
We must be neighbors, onlykelsey. I'm on Fred. Douglass Blvd in the one-teens. I think I'll have a friend visiting from out of town that weekend, though...
-

I'm on the other side of 125th, on 133rd. Used to live down at FDB and 123rd, though!
-
Just moved to NYC 2 months ago. Would love to get involved with an MMM meetup.
-
Lurker here; interested in coming to the 5/14 meetup!
-
I'm game for a meet-up on 5/14.
@onlykelsey, you still planning on hosting? Otherwise central park is always an option. Weather permitting.
-
I along with my wife and 3 years old daughter is also game for 5/14 meet up!
-
I am definitely still down for hosting, although if the weather is beautiful it could be fun to be outside. How about we say 2 PM and then chat a day or two before depending on the weather?
-
Can we do a bit later say 3 pm?
-
I'd like to try to make this one!
-
I'm also up for a 5/14 meetup.
-
I might go. Depends where we meet.
-
We're out of town that weekend. Hope we can catch the next one!
-
Engineerstache- 3 PM is fine by me.
Pooperman- I'm in Harlem (near the 2/3 express, ~8 min from the A/B/C/D), but we could always meet in the park, of course, if it's not miserable and raining.
-
aaaaaaand I'll be out of town this weekend. Hopefully I can make the next one!

I come in from NJ haha. It looks like PM showers on Saturday.
-
Hi, is there still a meetup on Saturday?
-
@onlykelsey volunteered to host on Sat. Or if the weather holds up we can meet in central park.
Maybe we can make a decision Fri night depending on the forecast?
-
Looks like there will be an afternoon thunderstorm tomorrow. Probably best not to chance out an outdoor meet-up.
@onlykelsey: You still game to host?
If not we can meet up in an indoor location like the IBM atrium at 56th and Madison. Would anyone else be up for that?
-
Kelsey seems to have vanished ( hope you're ok out there, Kelsey! ) in light of this the IBM Atrium is a good backup spot.
See everyone at 3 pm!
-
Cool, see everyone there at 3. iBM atrium is the one right next to trump tower. Not to be confused with the Sony atrium across the st 😄
-
Alright. How many people do we have coming?
-
I won't make this one.
-
@bb11: 3 so far I think.
-
I'm gonna come!
-
Hi guys,
Sorry about vanishing, had four overnight guests yesterday. Happy to meet wherever, can still host. I think monstermonster and her boyfriend are planning to meet up here, but I can redirect them. I really thought it would be raining, but it looks like it's going to be beautiful!
-
Yep, looks like weather will be nice until later in the evening. How bout we plan on meeting at the IBM atrium still, then we could walk to the park.
-
Hey all! We are here. Is anyone else here?
-
I'm just leaving the upper west side. Should I go to the atrium or the park?
-
Can't make the 18th, but know someone moving to the city soon--if anyone has a lead on a roommate/apartment opening, PM me!

The people have spoken! Saturday 18th in Prospect Park. I didn't say this would be a hike, but I thought it. If anyone has a problem with that, speak up.
Time: 2 PM?
So you mean it's far away? Or we'll be compelled to hike when we get there? Have a friend in town that weekend but am going to try to make it. It's also my unspeakable birthday :(
-
This sounds awesome. The doodle RSVP is closedso I wanted to sa that I plan on coming. Not a hiker- I will join the contingent of folks laying about on the grass.
-
Thanks for organizing, MonkeyJenga! Where in Prospect Park will we meet up?
-
Last time we met at Grand Army Plaza. That seemed to work well and won't involve too much walking to get to a grassy area.
-
had no idea that there were this many mustachios in Brooklyn! I am in Gowanus. I would like to attend; what would I need to do?
-
I would love to go to a meet-up, curious to see the faces of MMM in Brooklyn. DH and I are in Ridgewood. Have a wedding back in the Midwest on the 18th, but I will be stalking the thread for the next one.
-
Out of town this weekend. Wish I could come!
-

Nice, I grew up in Ridgewood and my brother moved back there a few years ago. Small world.

My half-sister was born there :P.
-
Gah, I am now out of town tomorrow. I will catch the next one. I'm so excited to do a real meetup after years of reading MMM.
-
I can't make tomorrow, got family in town.
A while back someone mentioned traveling to NYC and having a meetup Sat July 23. That date work for other people?
-
One need never leave the confines of New York to get all the greenery one wishes—I can’t even enjoy a blade of grass unless I know there’s a subway handy, or a record store or some other sign that people do not totally regret life.
(Frank O'Hara, "Meditations in an emergency")
Time to think about July. As a random visitor from overseas, I might not be able to dictate when to meet but a good day for me would be Saturday July 23rd. Also possible, but on weekdays are July 22nd or the first few days of August.
Would this work for anyone? :)
-
Let's plan on it! Maybe meet in central park.
-
I can make Saturday 7/23 now! Central Park works for me.
-
July 23 is on then. :)
Central Park? On the lawn by the Dairy Center? Time?
-
Dairy Visitor Center in Central Park sounds good.
How about after lunch at 2pm?
-
Works for me. :)
-
I'll be there for July 23! I think I can get my gf to come too.
-
2pm works for me too. See you all there.
-
See everybody tomorrow at the Dairy visitor center @ 2pm.
I'll bring my mustache sign and lots of water to fend off the heat dome ☀️🔥
-
Lemanfan and I are here. Blue blanket between the trees with Mustache sign on skateboard
-
Hi NYC mustachians! My husband and I will be moving to NYC in October. I'd appreciate any advice you have to give about where to live and how to make it work there!
I created a thread here (http:// http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/ask-a-mustachian/just-got-job-offer-in-nyc-suggestions-for-a-nyc-newbie/msg1174656/#msg1174656) if you want to weigh in without cluttering up this thread.
-
Is anyone interested in a NYC meetup this month?
-
The 18th or 24th works for me.
-
17th or 18th works for me.
-
Can't do this month, but maybe next...
-
I could do 24/25. Probably the 18th too if we do the afternoon.
-
I'm a new forum member, but I'd try to come to an NYC meetup any of those days. Very much want to meet some people aiming for early financial independence in this city!
-
The 18th seems to work for a lot of people, should we try then?
-
Let's do it! How bout 3pm on Sun 9/18.
Meet at the usual spot (dairy visitor center) in central park?
-
Sounds good!
-
Looks like there might be a thunder storm tomorrow afternoon.
Let's have the IBM atrium (E 56th and Madison) be our back-up in case of rain.
-
So should we switch to the IBM Atrium?
-
Since I'm new but still hoping to come--is it going to be easy to recognize the meetup? Anything I should look for, assuming I make it there?
edit: VV ha, thanks, that would do it.
-
Current forecast says no rain until later tonight so we should be good.
Should be easy enough to spot us. Grassy area in front of the dairy visitor center.
I'll bring my trusty mustache sign.
-
I'm here at the Dairy visitor center.
Blue blanket with the mustache sign
-
Was good to meet some folks yesterday! Now to explore the rest of the forums...
-
Would anyone be up for meeting up this weekend, say around 2 pm on Saturday the 10th? I'd love to meet other NYC mustachians.
-
I'm in.
-
Count me in too :)
-
Awesome. Where do you guys normally meet up?
-
For an indoor location we've often met at the IBM atrium in Manhattan. Unless someone else has a place in mind that will be the easiest.
-
OK cool see you there!
-
See you guys there!
I'll be the handsome millennial wearing my red "Make America Great Again" hat.
-
I'll also try to be there! Will bring an index card that has MMM in big letters on it and wander around confusing those who are not in the know.
-
See you guys there!
I'll be the handsome millennial wearing my red "Make America Great Again" hat.
I'll be the millennial fighting the guy in the red hat. :)
I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a Trump had lol!
I wish I could actually join you folks, 2 hours each way by car/train for me from out here in the Suffolk county boonies.
-
I wonder if security is gonna be a hassle at the IBM atrium since it is connected to Trump tower.
Maybe we are better off going to the Sony atrium across the street between E 56th and 55th.
-
Sure! Hopefully everyone makes their way there.
-
Sony atrium it is!
I'll send out an email on the Google group.
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/nyc-mustachians
-
Any of you lovely folks from the Island? I can't seem find any mustachians out here!
-
I'm heading to the atrium. Should be there a little after 2. I'll bring my mustache sign
-
I am lost. :P can someone meet me at the omega store between 55 and 56? Gray jacket gold shoes
-
On 5th
-
Ok saw the bit about Madison but still lost :)
-
You gotta enter on 55th st near Madison. Other side is closed.
Two of us are here now. Next to the freegan meetup.
-
Any of you lovely folks from the Island? I can't seem find any mustachians out here!
Suffolk county for me.
-
Posting to track. I keep missing these! Hopefully I can make the next one.
-
Gah, how does one follow a thread? I keep missing them, too.
Anyone interested in a meet up in January, perhaps Saturday 1/21 at 2pm? I'd love to meet a couple other Mustachians soon. I'm six months into FIRE and I'm starting to crave more social interaction. :o)
-
1/21 is the NYC march! Go to that after? Or instead? My choir is singing by the UN for it...
-

I'd definitely love a meetup in January! I'm usually at the NYC Python Programming meetups Saturdays and Sundays, but I can make an exception or leave one early since they're three times a week. :)
Any time on the weekend, or evenings on the weekdays (like 7, I'm usually working until 6 or so M-F) work best for me. I don't have any plans for January aside running around like a maniac trying to find a new place.
-
I'd love to meet up NYC MMMers too. Good way to start the new year.
-
Yikes your right, that's not a good idea. Running to catch a flight if anyone has an alternate date suggestion I'm for it!
-
I'm going to be selfish and suggest 2 pm on Jan 28 because that weekend is the only one I am free.
@chatche will you still be here?
-

Not chatche, but this time works for me!
-
Hi All,
I am a new forum member and would love to meet up. I am pretty flexible with time and locations.
-

@chatche will you still be here?
Not chatche, but this time works for me!
That works for me too!
-
1/28 @ 2pm works for me too :)
Let's do it!
Should we still meet in the usual spot, Sony atrium? Another option could be Brookfield place near world trade. More convenient for Brooklyn and New Jersey.
-
Let's plan on that then
1/28 2pm @ Brookfield place on the steps in the big atrium.
I think the steps will be our best bet to find each other and have a place to sit.
-
I'm in, 1/28 2pm @ Brookfield Pl. Should be fun!
-
+1 for 1/28 at 2pm at Brookfield Pl.
-
In.
-
Hi - I am a newbie here - would love to join the NYC meetups - cant do late Jan but am up for the next one. Do you have these every month?
Thanks
-
Hi! I live in Brooklyn and would love to join the Saturday 1/28 meet up. How will I recognize you guys?
-
@rainas we have them ever other month or so. More often in the warmer months.
@james I'll bring my trusty mustache sign / placard, but it shouldn't be hard to spot us sitting on the steps of the atrium.
-
Newbie to the boards--I'll try be there on the 28th!
-
I am in town next weekend. Will try to be there!
-
thanks @chatche.
I look forward to joining the next one!
wknds are typically tougher for me - any chance of weekday evening meetups?
-
+1 Looking forward to meeting everyone tomorrow!
-
Weekday meet-up is a good idea. We should do that for the next one.
Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow :)
-
I will be there. looking forward to meeting everyone.
-
Hi all, won't be able to make it as planned. In full support of a weekday meetup somewhere in Manhattan. Look forward to meeting you all then.
-
We've moved to the tables by the escalators and black cloth.
-
Dear All - Hope NYC meetup this wknd was awesome.
Since I am relatively new to MMM forums, I might be suggesting something that is not workable so do let me know if that is the case.
1. Forward Meetup Calendar - do you think we should set up a forward meetup calendar, for eg something like last Thursday of every month or whatever works. For me personally, having a forward calendar ensures I dont plan something else that evening.
2. Standard Location - Is there a standard location where you always meet? If not, should we set up a standard location that always works (even in the NYC winter).
I would love to know date of next meetup (for Feb) -so that I can block my calendar soon.
Thanks so much
Rainas
-
I'm open to a monthly recurring thing. Not sure about which day would be best. In the spring / summer it is really nice to meet in the park on a Sat or Sun. But mixing in some weekdays would allow people to attend that are busy on weekends.
For location we have often met at one of the atriums on madison and 56th (IBM or Sony). Maybe that could be a monthly spot, then we still plan hikes or picnics in the park when the weather is nice.
How about Thurs Feb 23rd for the next meetup?
Meet at the Sony atrium at 6pm. That too early? 7pm?
~Phil
-
I'm usually in work until 5:30 or 6. I can make a 6 P.M. meetup, just not on time :)
And apologies for not being there for the last one -- family business!
-
I can make 6pm at the atrium. If most people are coming from Brooklyn or NJ, then Brookfield Place remains a good option. Looking forward to warmer weather and outdoor meetups.
-
Shoot, I am volunteering on the 23rd. Is anyone free to meet on the 22nd?
-
February 22 is fine with me at the Sony Atrium. February 23 is also okay.
Can we make a Doodle with some possible dates/times? I notice that when NYC meetups here are considered, it's through a bunch of forum posts which isn't the most efficient way of coordinating. Is there a listserv that we can create? Someone with more expertise in that than I might chime in.
-
Doodle is a good idea. I created one with a bunch of mid-week dates.
Please fill it out if you are interested in attending the next meetup.
http://doodle.com/poll/hwzudxgxgm2fktr7
I created a listserv (google group) a while back. We have 24 members however, it is just me posting when the next meetup is. Benefit of planning meetups here on the forum is that new people can easily find and participate.
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/nyc-mustachians
-
Doodle now closed.
Winner is Thurs March 2nd
Let's meet at the Sony atrium at 7pm. Madison and 56th.
-
Been living relatively frugally for a couple years now, but just signed on to the forum. Looking forward to meeting fellow NYCers!
-
Hi, I'd like to meet up on the 2nd. How will I know which group at the atrium? Thanks and looking forward to meeting!
Steve
-
@stevef941
I'll bring my mustache sign to put on the table, but it shouldn't be too hard to find us.
Also, I see the atrium is now called the Plaza Public Arcade on google
Address is 550 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10022
-
Ooo! I think this is the first meeting I'll actually be off from work for! Looking forward to it! :-)
-
Looking forward to the meetup tomorrow night :)
-
Great! Thanks for the mustache and see you guys tonight.
Steve
-
I was really looking forward to this but I am sorry I won't be able to make it anymore.
Apologies!
-
Ditto, I ended up booked tonight, but I hope to meet everyone soon!
-
5 of us here now near the 55th st side.
-
5 of us here now near the 55th st side.
Have fun everyone -- I just saw this :(
-
Thanks for the great conversation at the meetup everyone! :-D It was nice to meet y'all!
-
Thanks for the great conversation at the meetup everyone! :-D It was nice to meet y'all!
Yes it was so nice!
-
Yes, thanks for making my first meeting a good one! See you guys soon.
-
Yes! Great to meet some new faces and good conversations all around :)
I'm off to New Zealand for a few weeks so the next meet-up I'll be at will hopefully be in warmer weather in the park :P
-
Hello All,
I'm new to the site and wondering if there is a NYC meetup group. If so, how do I find it on meetup.com?
Thanks,
David
-
No organized group on meetup to my knowledge. Meetups do get set up here though :).
-
Hi All - do we have a MMM regroup in April?
Should we start looking at dates if not scheduled yet?
Looking forward to it.
Thanks!
-
Yes please to an April get together!
-
For April I can do: April 12/April 13/ April 26/April 27
-
On the /r/financialindepence subreddit, a group is organizing a NYC area meetup on Monday 4/10 at 7pm.
https://www.reddit.com/r/financialindependence/comments/60jltc/any_nyc_fi_fire_meetups/
I don't know the organizers and won't be able to go, but just thought I'd forward the information.
-
!2th works for me, too
-
Woah, looks like a lot of interest on that reddit thread :)
I'm going to attend that one. Maybe we merge our usual meetup with that one for April?
-
I'll try as well. sent a request to join the meetup group
-
I just saw this, but..also had to work. I hope a few MMM'ers made it!
-
I tried to join and got no response from the organizers - did any of you guys get to go? We should plan something else!
-
I tried to join too and similar to your experience, got no response. Yes, lets plan our own
-
I didn't get added to that meetup either :(
Let's get our meetup planned.
How about Wed the 26th after work?
-
I didn't get added to that meetup either :(
Let's get our meetup planned.
How about Wed the 26th after work?
I get out at 2:30am...might be worth specifying a time, haha. :P
-
Lol, 2:30am might be too cloak and dagger for me.
I was thinking more like 7pm.
-
Hi! I live in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn and I would love to meet some other MMM New Yorkers. Are we thinking April 26th for a possible meet up? Does this convo ever transfer to email?
-
@pfo: Click "notify" at the top and you can get email notifications when someone posts to the thread. Formatting ain't the greatest though :P
If Apr 26 works for most people I say we meet at Brookfield place again. Seems to be a good "middle" location.
-
April 26th, 7 pm at Brookfield Place.
Works for me.
-
Hey! So I'm one of the organizers of the Meetup. We had an issue with the account so was unable to really add any one before we got it sorted out.
The first Meetup went well and will continue to do them the first Monday of every month.
You can find the info here: https://www.meetup.com/NYC-FI-RE-meetup/events/239213815/
Also - the cap doesn't matter in terms of capacity but mostly for accommodations (chairs, snacks etc) so assumign we aren't expecting 200+ we should be fine!
-
Patrick, thanks for looping us in. Looking forward to attending the next one :)
26th seems to work well for most. Let's make it official!
Wed Apr 26th @ 7pm, Brookfield place.
Meet in the atrium at the tables opposite the steps. I'll bring my usual mustache sign.
Brookfield Place
230 Vesey St, New York, NY 10281

-
See everyone next week!
-
Hey guys - had a conflict come up so I'll see you next time.
-
Reminder of the meetup tomorrow at Brookfield place atrium.
See everyone at 7!
-
I'll be there
-
How will I find you guys?
-
I'm new to the group but I'm here. Blue windbreaker, sitting by the windows.
-
I'm running late. Be there in 5 mins
-
New as well, by the water, red umbrella
-
Do we have a date in mind for another meet up?
-
How bout we meet for a picnic in Central Park weekend of june 10th?
Sat or Sun work for me.
-
I'm in June 10th or 11th.
-
June 10th is best for me
-
I just moved back to new York and would like to join. Either date is good for me.
-
June 10th it is!
Let's meet at 1pm at the usual spot in Central Park.
Grassy area in front of the Dairy visitor center.
Bring lunch and something to share if you'd like.
I'll bring my red mustache sign and picnic blanket.
~Phil
-
Attaching a screenshot of the location.
-
One of these days I'll make it out to one! I'm going to be in Philly that weekend.
-
Think I can make this one-- see you guys there!
-
I think I can make this one too!
-
Oh I think I can make this one, too! May come with baby in tow.
-
See everyone tomorrow at 1pm!
-
I'm here. Blue blanket and red mustache sign
-
Sorry I didn't make it, I ended up needing IV rehydration on Friday after being sick! Hope everyone had fun.
-
Hi All, I'm new to the group.
Any meetups happening in NYC in the near future?
Thanks!
-
I'm in NYC the first week of August and it would be fun to meet up. I'm staying in the Upper West Side.
PS: I'm the guy who wrote this MMM post: http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2016/05/25/recipe-for-a-badass-diy-electric-mountain-bike/
-
That would be awesome! Are you around the 5th? Or just during the week?
-
I'm down for a meetup first weekend in August. Anyone free? Hopefully it's cool enough for something free and outdoors (in the shade).
-
Curry cracker is having an Aug meetup In NYC
http://www.gocurrycracker.com/happy-independence-day-2017/
Maybe you could add to that one.
-
My August weekends are generally free given sufficient notice
-
Count me in... new to the group and excited to meet folks!
-
I think meeting up with GoCurryCracker on August 12th would be awesome.
Thanks for the heads up Chippewa!
-
Unfortunately, I was out of town on August 14th. Did people meet? Has this discussion been moved to the meetup . com group? I'm confused. I live in NYC and would be interested in meetups.
-
It's been a while since I've been to an MMM meetup. Maybe one in September?
-
Hi, this is my first post. I'd be interested in a Mustachian Meetup in NYC. How about the last weekend in September, the 29th or 30th? I've never met anybody interested in financial independence in real life. Are there any websites besides this one where I could find similar meetups?
-
I could do the weekend of Sep 29. mathstach, there are also meetups through ERE and and Reddit's Financial independence board.
Also: it's primary election day! If you're an NYC resident, go vote. Polls are open until 9 PM.
Election guide: https://www.nyccfb.info/nyc-votes/vgwelcome/primary-election-2017/
-

Thanks for the reminder, I'd already forgotten after having a whole conversation about it this morning (yay sleep deprivation!).
If you have any thoughts on the mayoral race, I'd love to hear them. I know you know your politics, and I haven't made up my mind yet.
-

If you have any thoughts on the mayoral race, I'd love to hear them. I know you know your politics, and I haven't made up my mind yet.
You're welcome!
My thoughts: de Blasio's going to win. He's going to win the primary, and he's going to win the general. Sal Albanese is the most legit Democratic challenger, in the sense of having the most votes/financing, but I'm mixed on him. Biggest drawback is his support for Broken Windows policing.
I saw Bob Gangi at an End Broken Windows event, and I like his stance on police reform.
dB is kind of in the middle, because once you're actually mayor, you desperately try not to piss off cops. But some progress has been made around BW. And, ya know, he's done some good stuff. And some bad stuff.
This is heavily BW-focused, though. What are your top issues?
I will vote for de Blasio in the general, and I will be happy that NYC has a strong Democrat mayor. I won't fault anyone for voting elsewhere in the primary.
-
I'm kind of torn between selfish issues (transportation/accessibility, housing, supporting the arts) and issues I see as being important overall to most NYC humans (policing, education).
Maybe since it is a sort of foregone conclusion I should vote for the guy who wants to repeal the cabaret law just to make a statement :-) ETA: His website also says he has a 17-year-old car. He's probably on the forum!
-
I'd be interested in joining NYC meet up Sept 29 weekend
-
Thanks, MonkeyJenga, for the suggestions. I couldn't find any upcoming NYC meetups on ERE when I checked last week, but there does seem to be a financial independence meetup in NYC on Monday, October 9, that I found via Reddit's FI board. Still, since I have a coaching commitment most Monday nights, a meetup on the weekend of September 29, give or take a week, would make more sense for me. ADK68, glad you're interested. Hope we can work something out
-
Anyone meeting up this weekend Sept 29/30/1?
-
Hello all,
Looking to connect with likeminded folks in Manhattan or Brooklyn.
New to the forum but not new to pursuing this lifestyle. Where did you find the details on the October 9th MeetUp in the Sub-Reddit?
Shaun
-
I think I am actually in town this weekend!
-
I think it would be a good start if we could get just a couple people (even just 2 or 3 people) for an initial meet up and then schedule a couple dates that people can plan around. I went to a gocurrycracker meetup, and it was nice to meet folks but there was no follow up since it was a one time thing...
If anyone is interested in trying that I would be happy to meet up. For me, it's actually easier to meet on weekdays in the evening. I work in lower Manhattan so if there are any folks interested in doing an after work meet up in the next few weeks please post here and we'll find a day and decide where to go.
-
+1 for after work meet up (although weekends also OK, and it is easier to find free spaces by day).
-
NYC: while it is still warm enough, does anyone want to have an after-work meet-up? Does Thursday, 26 October work for anyone? Somewhere in downtown/lower Manhattan.
-
I'm in for Thursday. 6 or 6:30? Do you have a spot in mind? If not, seaport area has indoor and outdoor options.
-
6:30 works. It looks like it'll be a bit too cool for something outside, so I welcome suggestions in Lower Manhattan. NYCers, can we get some more RSVPs?
-
you guys could all ride the staten island ferry! so free and downtown! bit harsh on late arrivers of course.
-
Do we have any other people able to meet up this evening???
-
@dibk, no one else has replied so we can try again in November.
-
@dibk, no one else has replied so we can try again in November.
Sounds good. Happy to meet up in November except for the Thanks Giving week. You want to throw a date out there to plan?
-
The next NYC Bogleheads meeting will be on Tues., Nov. 21st at the Sony Atrium at 550 Madison Avenue.
Start time will be 6:30pm.
The group usually sits near the 56th St entrance.
Hope to see you there.
-
Anyone want to meet Dec 15-23rd? I will be in NYC then.
-
Anyone want to meet Dec 15-23rd? I will be in NYC then.
Yup, how about the afternoon of Saturday the 23rd?
-
The 16th or 17th would work for me.
-
Happy Holidays Everyone!
I'm going to be back in NYC the week of January 26th. Does anyone want to meet up on the Thur Jan 25th in the evening or sometime during the day on Sat Jan 27th?!
Steve

During the day on the 27th sounds great! Happy holidays!
-
Anyone want to meet Dec 15-23rd? I will be in NYC then.
Yup, how about the afternoon of Saturday the 23rd?
Sorry for the delayed response. I don't think I will be in town on the 23rd actually, and possibly not the 22nd. What about like the 20th?
-
Jan 27th sounds good for me.
-
Let's meet in the winter garden at Brookfield Place. It's the indoor garden with the palm trees. Address is
World Financial Center
225 Liberty St
New York, NY 10281-1008
United States
Does anyone have input on early or late afternoon?
-
Very good, I can make a Brookfield Pl meetup Sat Jan 27. Early afternoon around 2pm works better for me because I'm travelling early Sunday
-
Early afternoon on Jan 27 works for me!
FYI, there is a Bogleheads meetup next Saturday, Jan 13 @ 2:30pm at the Signature Theater cafe seating area. The address is 480 West 42nd Street. After you enter the building through the glass doors, go up the staircase to the cafe area. This area is open to the public and there is plenty of seating.
https://www.signaturetheatre.org/Visit/Cafe-Bar.aspx
-
How was the Bogleheads meet up? 2PM Sat Jan 27th in the winter garden. See everyone then!
-
Still on for this Saturday Jan 27. See you!
-
Heading over in a bit. I just realized I don't have a cool mustache so will sit by the windows and I'll have a bright blue jacket on. See everyone soon!
-
We're here, by the windows, with name badges
-
Hey! I just made an account to say: the meetup today was a lot of fun. We talked everything from taxes and investments to dating and travel to the meaning of life and the future of capitalism. It was a good time.
We also had nine people, which is more than you might have expected from reading this thread. So, for future organizers: there are definitely people who lurk this forum looking for social meetups with other mustachians but who don't post. (I am one of them.) So... either people like me should post more indicating our interest, or there should be some organizational apparatus that is lower-friction than signing up for the forum, to capture the lurkers. I'm not sure which it should be; just wanted to log this data point.
-
Great meeting, glad I went. Nice open discussion. Looking forward to the next one.
-
Agreed, I enjoyed today's meetup! Good conversation, and it was great to catch up and get to know some new people. I added Thinking Fast and Slow to my queue.
For future meetups, I kinda get the sense that if someone posts "I'm free at <time> on <date>, anyone wanna meet up at <place>", and there's a confirmation, then people will show up. With Brookfield being a convenient location for many.
-
The next NYC Bogleheads meeting will be Thursday, 3/22 at 6:30pm at the Sony Atrium (550 Madison Ave)
We usually sit near the 56th St. entrance.
Hope to see you there!
-
The Bogleheads group is pretty cool! Many more retirees than the NYC FI/RE meetup.
The author of Pound Foolish talked a bit during the first half of the meeting. Much interesting discussion of some particular blogs (Early Retirement Now), books (Strangers in Paradise), retirement styles (escapeerv.com), charitable giving, and taxes. We broke into small group discussions as the evening went on. Overall, a great experience!
-
I'm moving to NY in 3.5 weeks! We should meet up in late April or May sometime! How far out do you people normally plan things?
-
I'm moving to NY in 3.5 weeks! We should meet up in late April or May sometime! How far out do you people normally plan things?
WHAT
Thank goodness I updated my subscription to this thread, I would have missed the most exciting news from this forum in years.
-
:)
-
I'm in for an NYC meet up too.
-
It has been a year since I last attended a meet up. A lot has changed in that time and I am finally make the leap to be partially FIREd this month! Lots to talk about! :-D I'll keep my eye open for the next meet up!
-
I'm up for one too. How does sat April 21st sound?!
-
Long time lurker. Definitely up for a meet up!
-
i'm down for april 21st , I really need more friends into FIRE , lately I've noticed more and more that most of my friends are all about spending. Like they literally can not enjoy time with friends unless their spending for show.... if weather is warm suggestion would be central park :)
-
My weekend is really full with apartment hunting :(
-
Central Park sounds good and we can do the winter garden if the weather isn't nice. Around 2PM?
-
cool!! exciting ! is there a good central park spot to easily find people ? or suggestion I usually meet at the south side fountain near the steps of the MET
I googled winter garden.. is it the mall downtown at brookfield?
**off topic good luck on apt hunting yikes thats stressful, you know about no fee apt buildings hopefully
-
Yes, but the weather looks good so the south fountain by the MET works. See you at 2pm this Saturday! We can wait there for 15 minutes or so then find a spot close by.
-
I might be able to join you folks on Saturday for a couple hours. Not familiar with the south fountain. Can someone share a google map location?
-
I'll be there, too. If I understand correctly, they're talking about the fountains outside the Met on the plaza. There are two fountains, so they're talking about the one that is located towards the South. I think this image on the Met's webpage shows the fountains:
https://www.metmuseum.org/press/news/2014/plaza-opening
I'll have a bright red backpacking backpack with me. That might help people find us.
-
yea thats exactly what i'm talking about ! cool pic , was there last week and they even had umbrella with table seating ahahah, by the steps of the MET each side has a fountain so since we going inside park thinking south side (around 81st) would be more logical. But I'm open to where ever you guys prefer. I'll wear a red schaeffer beer hat to match :)
-
So, to clarify, meet at south fountain on plaza along 5th avenue outside the Met, closest to 81st street at 2PM on Saturday. Is that correct? Sounds like an okay location to me.
-
yes exactly @ 5th ave side of the met entrance , toward 81st , is the fountain facing the south side of park @ 2pm
that work for everyone? I'm open to another spot if you can know of better one
-
Excellent! See y'all tomorrow!
-
heading out shortly see ya in a bit with red beer hat
-
Nice meeting you all, I had a great time!
Towards the end someone mentioned an internet source that had a flow chart with personal finance goals/tasks/steps. I really like this link that was shared with me a couple of months ago:

-
Thanks for the wonderful meeting and conversations! Keep an eye out because I will try to coordinate one in a month or two! :-)
-
it was so nice meeting everyone !
I needed to type this before I forgot but remembered cheap date spot and solution to wine bill , totally blanked on this before
Little Thai Kitchen - its BYOB, no corkage fee and super tight spot, and not super tacky looking so good for dates
and if you willing to trek to Williamsburg purely for the ambiance loud clubby but impressive design is "SEA"
-
I had my MMM shirt on and ready to go but I got held back by something :-( Glad to see you all made it and had a good time!
I have a completely free schedule this upcoming Saturday if anyone wants to meet up.
-
Works for me.
-
If I was not going to be out of town this weekend I would be there.
-
For those who were at the meetup last Saturday, I called Vanguard and asked if the Target Retirement Funds has a hidden expense ratio because it is a fund of funds. The person said no, the expense ratio that is listed (in my case, 0.15%) is the only expense ratio.
That being said, I ended up moving to a different fund with an even lower expense ratio anyway. =D
-

Also, this is a great flow chart! I used a very simplified version (from my dad!) when I was first starting out, but this one is great for where I am now. Has anyone done the "Mega Backdoor Roth" that is mentioned in that chart? https://www.madfientist.com/after-tax-contributions/
-
Following for next time - As the weather gets nicer I, (and maybe DW?) would be down to hit a park and play a pick up game of whatever, go to the beach, skateboard ... anything outside and active. Hope to meet up sometime soon!

The next NYC Bogleheads meeting will be Sunday, 5/20 at 2pm at the Sony Atrium (550 Madison Ave)
We usually sit near the 56th St. entrance.
Hope to see you there!
-
My wife and I are planning to go to Prospect Park and pick up trash around the lake next Saturday the 12th if anyone wants to join. BYO trashbags.

Thanks for posting this! I'm planning to attend.

I'll be in NYC this Friday for work. Not sure if any other MMMers wanna grab lunch or coffee?
-
I'm already missing a big chunk of the workday for a test or I would love to :(
-
I am down for coffee/lunch. I'm in Long Island City, but could be in midtown to grab a bite if that is easier. Let me know when and where
-
Steeze, we will make it happen soon!
My meeting got cancelled so I'm working out of our Long Island office today.
-
No worries - next time!
-
Any fellow mustaches want to hang? We should get the next one of these on the books!

In case anyone's interested in joining this hike on Sat., 6/23:
7 miles of the Appalachian Trail out of Pawling, NY. This section is called Cat Rocks Trail and it starts at a Metro North train stop called Appalachian Trail, on the Harlem Line. Here's the plan for the day:
- Meet at 7am at the Harlem-125th St. Metro North station (roundtrip ticket is $33.50)
- Train departs at 7:20am
- We'll arrive at the trailhead (after 1 transfer) 2 hours later, approximately 9:20am
- We have 5 hours to hike before our returning train at 2:35pm (we will be taking breaks along the way and a snack/lunch break in the middle)
- We'll be back at the Harlem-125th St. Metro North station at approximately 4:35pm
Suggestions of what to bring / wear:
2 liters of water; snacks that combine carbs and protein like trail mixes; cheese; nut butter; granola bars; etc.
Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat with brim, lightweight rain shell/poncho, extra shirt for chill of A/C train after sweating.
Sneakers or lightweight hiking boots; socks that wick moisture; shorts or lightweight pants and t-shirt/tank, preferably not cotton so sweat wicks away.
-
Sounds great! DW and I are in. Please confirm Friday night!
-
Despite Saturday's forecast of 80% chance of rain in Pawling, NY, a few of us still intend to hike (unless the rain is extreme before boarding the 7:20am train at 125th St (7:10 if boarding at Grand Central)
The group will transfer at Southeast (at approximately 8:51am) for the final leg to the AT stop (arriving at 9:22am)
-Since rain gear will most likely be needed, this includes wool socks if you have them as well as rain pants and jackets. Also recommend is a change of clothes so the air conditioned train isn’t uncomfortable on the way back. Keep your dry clothes wrapped in a plastic bag in your backpack to keep it dry if you do not have a waterproof pack. Still bring water and snacks.
There will be other hikes regardless, so if hiking in the rain isn't for you, feel free to hold off until the next trip.
-
Hello again, last update:
Sorry to say this hike is postponed.
Forecast is for thunderstorms from 10am to 9pm in Pawling - lightening is not safe so we'll hike on another day.
-
No worries, turns out I have to work an overnight shift 10pm-6am tonight, so maybe a long hike this morning would have been a bad idea! Definitely keep us posted on the next one.
-
I am down for coffee/lunch. I'm in Long Island City, but could be in midtown to grab a bite if that is easier. Let me know when and where
I'm already missing a big chunk of the workday for a test or I would love to :(
Hey folks, I am working from NYC tomorrow and Wednesday.
I could meet up for lunch tmrw any time between 11-1, coming into Penn and heading toward the West Village direction for a 1:30 meeting, or do an MMM dinner any time after 6:30 PM.
Wednesday lunch near midtown or lower Central Park could work.
Let me know!

Hanging in Union Square park till 1:30 :)

Long time lurker here. NYC mostly during Fridays and weekend. Interested to meet up. What usually are topics talked about during these meet ups?
-
Another lurker here looking to meet some NYC mustachians. Any meetups happening soon?
-
I can't make the Bogleheads meetup but would love to do something too.

Hoping to attend a NYC meet up later this year.
For NYers w library cards you can now visit a slew of museums for free.
http://gothamist.com/2018/07/16/nypl_culture_pass.php (http://gothamist.com/2018/07/16/nypl_culture_pass.php)
Can you just stroll up and show your library card at the Met? No. You'll have to reserve your passes online first.
And in the spirit of frugality, a reminder that you can stream plenty of movies through NYPL and Kanopy:

Is anyone interested in having another meetup soon?
-
I'm interested Chris
-
August sometime? Picnic?
-
Picnic would be awesome!
-
I meant to reply sooner, but I am definitely in favor of this.
-
August picnic sounds great.
A picnic sometime ago in Central Park near the Diary (mid-park near 65th Street) worked out well, so that's worth considering unless somewhere else is preferred.
I may do a hike near Cold Spring on Sat., 8/25 but most other August weekend days currently work for me. [Hike details to follow separately for anyone interested in joining]
Anyone want to propose date, time and place for the August picnic?
-
Details for the hike near Cold Spring on Sat., 8/25:
Excerpt from the hike organizer:
Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park near Cold Spring, NY.
The hike is classified as moderate with an elevation gain of about 870 feet. We will be crossing creek beds, so wear shoes you don't mind getting wet.
Meeting point will be the Metro North railway station in Cold Spring, NY.
From Grand Central, train departs at 7:45am and arrives at 9:07, no transfers necessary ($29)
From Harlem 125th St, train departs at 7:56am and arrives at 9:07, no transfers necessary ($29)
Organizer will have cars at the train station to drive 10 minutes to the trail head.
The hike will take approximately 3.5-4 hours and we will have several options afterwards:
Drive (~10 mins) to a lakeside beach
Drive back into Cold Spring for lunch before departing
The trains out of Cold Spring are hourly (2:16, 3:14, 4:06, 4:18, etc), so if anyone needs to leave immediately after the hike, no problem and if anyone wants to stay and enjoy the coastal town of Cold Spring, no problem!
What to bring:
Small daypack (backpack)
2 liters of water
Snacks/lunch: foods that offer a mixture of protein and carbohydrates, such as trail mixes, fruit with individual packets of nut butters, fruit with individual servings of cheese, granola bars that also have nuts/seeds, pre-made sandwiches, bagels and nut butter, etc.
For women, bring a plastic baggie, tissues and travel-size antibacterial lotion in case you need to use the "facilities" while on the trail. We need to take everything back off of the trail with us; no littering!
Sunscreen
Insect repellent (ticks are bountiful this year)
Sunglasses or a hat with a brim
Your phones or cameras for pictures!
An extra shirt or lightweight sweater to avoid the chill of an air-conditioned train after sweating
We will keep an eye on the weather as it gets closer, but you should always carry a lightweight rain shell/poncho just in case
What to wear:
Sneakers or lightweight hiking boots/shoes
Again, we will be crossing stream beds, so wear shoes that can get wet if it's unavoidable
Socks with some cushion to the soles if you haven't been hiking lately; lightweight wool is an excellent wicking material for socks
Shorts or lightweight pants and a t-shirt or tank, preferably not cotton so you can wick away sweat as you get warmer
-
@Prospector so fun! Will be there in spirit!

Did you find enough NY places to crash? My home is still yours if not.

Did you find enough NY places to crash? My home is still yours if not.
I think we have space for J1 and I for sure. Momma and J2 are coming to see us across the finish line, and I'm not sure about them. We may take you up on the offer for them - how much notice do you need (can it be a gameday call on the 1st?)
Also have (modest) room (ask @monstermonster) but it's in Harlem which sounds less than ideal for your plans.
-
Anyone have interest in meeting up this weekend? I'm going to try to attend a Slate Star Codex meetup at 3pm on Saturday 8/18, but would be interested in meeting up earlier in the day (say 11am?) at Central Park or something similar.

If you aren't aware, there's a Bogleheads forum and wiki - check out https://www.bogleheads.org/
The meetup is pretty free form - we talk about investing, recent news, general personal finance stuff, whatever questions or topics people want to bring up.
-
Anyone want to do a meet up for September? I'm new to New York, don't know a soul, and have been craving a sense of community!
-
Welcome to NYC! I just got here in April so I can sympathize!
What about a potluck, picnic, or park meetup on 9/30? We could host a potluck at our place in the East Village.
-
@grantmeaname - 9/30 would be awesome! I'm down.

-
I'm pretty sure I could do something on 9/30 as well.
-
I could tentatively do that, if later in the afternoon....
-
I love the idea of a potluck, esp with fall-ish weather hitting NYC :) BAKED GOODS! still free on 9/30
-
Meetup this Sunday is on. Mi casa in the East village, 3pm. Bring a dish or just your fine self. PM me for address!
-
Looking forward, thanks for hosting us!
-
Good morning, I moved back to the US/NYC late last year and have been trying to figure out how to make life here work for me and my husband in the long term. We very recently learned about MMM (I think someone mentioned it in NPR's YMYL group?). I am curious to meet people who have been able to follow MMM tenets given NYC realities, its temptations and its rents. If it isn't too late to join the meetup on Sunday, I would appreciate it if we could join you to learn more about how you do it.
-
Great! I will send you the details, see you then.
-
I hope to attend also. I live nearby at Union Square.
-
PM sent. This is turning into quite the party!
-
I'm very new to the board (this is my first post!). I can't make it Sunday but would be interested in a future NYC get together and wanted to say hi :).
-
Hell yeah! Welcome to the forums! :)
Can't wait to meet you in person someday.
-
Good morning yall!
Chili is in process :)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180930/b1e826d019df1165e4b78f089c401745.jpg)
-
I'll be a little late (banana bread is still in the oven, but I should be there a bit after 3!)
-
Awesome, can't wait!
-
Thank you for hosting and for the delicious chili! We really enjoyed meeting you and the rest of the crew.
-
I had a great time too - awesome to meet everyone!
-
Sorry I missed it! Megabus waits for no man.
(But we all wait for Megabus, hours longer than we were supposed to.)
I'm back in a couple weeks if anyone wants to get together on Oct 14.
-
Nice meeting everyone! Thanks for hosting. Looking forward to next time.
-
Hi All,
Is anyone interested in another meetup in the NYC area? Would be happy to coordinate.
-
Absolutely! When and where?
-
In case anyone's interested in joining this hike this Saturday, 10/13:
Our goal is to hike approximately 7 miles of the Appalachian Trail out of Pawling, NY.
- This section is called Cats Rock Trail and it starts at the Metro North-Appalachian Trail Station. Hopefully we’ll see some fantastic Fall foliage of the Hudson Valley
Here's the plan for the day:
- Meet at 7am at the Harlem-125th St. Metro North station (roundtrip ticket is $33.50)
- Train departs Harlem-125th St. at 7:20am. (If anyone wants to leave from Grand Central, this train departs at 7:10am). Let’s all try to get on the last car of the train, if possible.
- We are going to the Appalachian Trail Station on the Harlem Line
- We'll arrive at the trailhead (after 1 transfer) 2 hours later, approximately 9:20am
- We have 5 hours to hike before our return train departs at 2:35pm (we will be taking breaks along the way and a snack/lunch break in the middle)
- We'll be back at the Harlem-125th St. Metro North station at approximately 4:35pm
-
I may be interested in joining and I might also have access to a car that day which would come out a lot cheaper, even if it's only two of us. Will update tomorrow evening!
-
Trying to find a good place. I'm not sure how many folks usually show up to meet ups from here?
Absolutely! When and where?

What is the difficulty level of this hike? When I looked up the name of the trail it says it's only 2 miles.

I can indeed get a car. Are any more folks interested in hitching a ride?
-
Hi there, ordinarily I would be thrilled to join a hike, but I won't be able to join this time. I hope to join you another time. Thanks for all the information about the hike - I only ever take the Hudson line up, so going up the Harlem line sounded very interesting!
-
Anyone have a recommendation for a bank / credit union that will loan on a Coop, and/or a realtor friend that works in Jackson Heights ? Thanks!
-
In case anyone's up for a last-minute day hike on Saturday, 11/10 (sorry for the extremely short notice)
Meeting at Cold Spring, Metro North Station at 9:22am (Hudson Line)
We're doing a four-mile hike on Mt. Taurus (aka Bull Hill) near Cold Spring, NY.
- The hike is classified as difficult with an elevation gain of about 1,350 feet.
- Here's a link for a blogger's images and details of the hike: https://hikethehudsonvalley.com/hikes/bull-hill-mt-taurus/
- Wear layers, plan for muddy trails, and pack a dry shirt for the way home.
We may do a similar hike soon, which I'll post more in advance.
For the meeting point at the Metro North railway station in Cold Spring, NY:
From Grand Central, train departs at 8:00am and arrives at 9:22am no transfers necessary ($29)
From Harlem 125th St, train departs at 8:11am and arrives at 9:22am, no transfers necessary ($29)
We will try to get hiking right away, so best to use the bathroom on the train!
Two group leaders will have cars at the train station to drive approximately 10 minutes to the trail head.
The hike will take approximately 3-3.5 hours and we will have several options afterwards:
Drive back to the train station to head home
Drive back into Cold Spring for lunch before departing
The trains out of Cold Spring are hourly (12:59pm, 2:01pm, 2:59pm, 4:03pm, etc), so if anyone needs to leave immediately after the hike, no problem and if anyone wants to stay and enjoy the coastal town of Cold Spring, no problem!
-
It looks like I’m seeing this a bit too late to join but I’ll stay tuned for the next one planned.
-
There's a Bogleheads meetup on Tuesday the 27th that I'm going to try to make it to - anybody else gonna be there?

I'll be at the next BH meeting, but as of now, that location's owner recently told us they may need the space, so the date or location may change.
So, we may keep the 11/27 date at an alternate space, or find a date close to 11/27 at the current space.
More to come as info materializes.
-
We'll be doing the same Mt. Taurus hike near Cold Spring, NY again this Sat., 11/17.
Please see the recent related post above for details; times and meeting spots are the same.
Only update is the trailhead is a short walk from the train station.
Also, remember to bring water and snacks/food.
Here's a blog post covering the hike:
https://hikethehudsonvalley.com/hikes/bull-hill-mt-taurus/
-
Hello All,
Due to the weather, this Saturday's hike has been cancelled.
Will post when another gets scheduled.
-
Also, appears the NYC Bogleheads meetup has been moved from 11/27/18 to 12/12/18, allowing for us to have our guest speaker in a space with good acoustics.
More info to follow.
-
The next NYC BH meeting is confirmed:
Wed., 12/12/18, 6pm (no meeting on Tues., 11/27)
Location: Capital One - Union Square, southwest corner of 14th St and Broadway
Lower level Community Room.
Guest speaker: Jonathan Clements
- Former WSJ columnist, author of multiple personal finance books and founder of HumbleDollar.com
https://humbledollar.com/about/jonathan-clements/

6pm on weeknights is a hard ask for my job but that Bogleheads weekend meetup looks great!
-
I'm going to check out the Bogleheads meeting, too... Hope to see everyone later today @1PM!
-
Yes I will be there! Green shirt and sweater! Do we have a sign or something?
-
No sign. I have a gray check scarf and I’ll drape it over a chair. I’m by the big windows
-
It was awesome meeting you guys yesterday.
For those who missed it, some of us will be doing the Great Saunter (https://shorewalkers.org/great-saunter/), a 12-hour walk around Manhattan, on Saturday May 4th. It's not free, but for $25 it's a pretty good value for your entertainment dollar.
-
I'm most likely in for May 4th!
-
There are three prep walks for the Great Saunter that I'll be doing if the weather is decent (and maybe even if it isn't). There is a $3 suggested donation for non-Shore Walks members.

Saunter Stretch #2 - 11 miles, 4/20 (https://shorewalkers.org/events/saunter-stretch-2-2/)
Saunter Stretch #3 - 12 miles, 4/27 (https://shorewalkers.org/events/saunter-stretch-3-2/)
Also, does anybody want to do a regular sitting meetup again, like the Brookfield place meetup last month?
-
Count me in for Great Saunter on Sat., 5/4. Thanks for the info.
Also up for a weekend regular sitting meeting.

Mustache people of Nyork: anybody up for a park or beach meetup? Or a potluck again?
-
Hey NYC mustache people. Going to be in your area the first ten days of August, was wondering if anyone would be up for a hangout, or meetup.
Hanging out in the park, beach, potluck, or walk all sound good.
I'm pretty flexible on schedule, as in I have nothing going on :)
-
My better half and I are free during the day on the third but then we are in Europe after that.
-
If I'm in NYC for work any of those days I'll let you know ahead of time. Maybe meet up for coffee or at a park ?

For those interested in Stoicism, an amazing three-author panel this week:
Thur., 9/19/19, 6pm-8:30pm
NY Society for Ethical Culture
2 W 64th St, at Central Park West
https://www.meetup.com/New-York-City-Stoics/events/260670852/
Authors are:
1. Massimo Pigliucci, author of "How to be a Stoic" and the new "A Handbook for New Stoics: How to Thrive in a World Out of Your Control" (more on Massimo at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massimo_Pigliucci )
2. William Irvine, author of "The Stoic Challenge" and "A Guide to the Good Life"
3. Donald Robertson, author of "Stoicism and the Art of Happiness," "The Philosophy of CBT," "Build Your Resilience" and the new "How to Think Like a Roman Emperor: The Stoic Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius"

The next joint NYC Bogleheads-MMM meetup:
Date: Wed., 11/13/19, 6pm-7:30pm
Location: Capital One cafe building, 853 Broadway at 14th St, NY, NY 10003
Lower-level Community Room
(The street level is the Capital One Cafe. Walk to the interior glass door along the side wall where there's a staircase to go down to the lower level.)
We'll have a guest speaker: Massimo Pigliucci, Professor of Philosophy at CUNY - City College, with a 30-45 minute talk on Stoicism. (more on Massimo at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massimo_Pigliucci )
As many MMM readers know, Stoicism can be helpful when applied to personal finance and life in that it advises us to:
- Focus on what is in our control;
- Appreciate what we have more than feeling misery over what we don't have;
- Focus on putting in your best effort rather than defining success by the outcome;
- Focus on controlling our reaction rather than letting an outcome define our experience.
Hope to see you there-
-
We're still on for the BH-MMM meetup on Wed., 11/13, 6pm-7:30pm in the Union Square Capital One Cafe basement Community Room, featuring our guest speaker on Stoicism for the first 30-45 minutes.
Entirely separate from that, on Wed., 11/6, 6pm-7:30pm we're having a more-social FI / Bogleheads social, in a smaller room on the 2nd floor at the same Union Square Capital One Cafe.
For 11/6, our room on the 2nd floor is called The Blue Room and is just past the ATMs on the 2nd floor, to the left of the bank tellers (when you're directly facing the teller stations)
The Blue Room is smaller than our downstairs room, so depending on turnout, the space may be tight, but folks can spillover into the public lounge outside the Blue Room if needed.
What to expect? No structure. You can chat more with other folks including some FI-minded folks.
Maybe board games and some potluck style food sharing (self-prepared or purchased)
Feel free to bring something you enjoy sharing.
Part of the goal is allowing for folks to more easily get to know one another and have fun doing that.
Hope to see you there.
-
Wow, the (excellent) stoicism presentation was over a month ago and it's been crickets in here since then! Anybody interested in a potluck (or alternative activity) early next year?
-
Potluck sounds great, count me in.

Next Bogleheads meetup:
When: Wed., Feb. 5th, 6p-7:30p. Best to arrive 5:30-5:45 if possible so that we can start on time and minimize disruptions.
Topic: Intro to Wills and Trusts; the very basics of estate planning.
Format: 30-minute presentation by guest-speaker lawyer, followed by one hour of Q&A.
Audience knowledge-level is wide-ranging.
Where: Capital One Café, Union Square - 853 Broadway at 14th St, southwest corner
Room location: Basement community room
Hope to see you there-

Sunday, May 3rd is the Five Boro Bike Tour
https://www.bike.nyc/events/td-five-boro-bike-tour/
A fun ride to do at least once.
Note: it can get congested in spots so be prepared to walk your bike if needed.
I think they've improved timing waves of riders to reduce that congestion.
You can be a volunteer if you want to save on the Registration Fee.
So, you can walk the perimeter of Manhattan on Saturday, 5/2 then bike through all five boroughs on Sunday, 5/3.
-
Wow, talk about an ambitious weekend!
-
.... so... anyone want to get together for a board game night? I have Pandemic if anyone is interested ...

Hi Mustachians, you're invited the join the next NYC Bogleheads meeting: It will be Sunday, October 2 at 2-4pm at the Winter Garden atrium at Brookfield Place. (https://bfplny.com/winter-garden/)
In addition to a general discussion, we hope to discuss the concepts in the book Die with Zero. Here is a summary: https://summaries.com/blog/die-with-zero
I recently read this book and think it would make for an interesting discussion. Some of the ideas are a bit at odds with the traditional Bogleheads frugality [e.g. the goal should be to spend (or give away) your money during your lifetime - anything left over represents time spent working unnecessarily; spend money on experiences earlier in life rather than waiting til you're older, etc]. I'll give a short summary of the key points for those who haven't read it.
Hope to see you soon!
Alice
