Monterey Bay - Santa Cruz / Salinas / Monterey
« on: August 24, 2015, 01:49:55 PM »
Anyone here from the Santa Cruz, Salinas or Monterey areas? I'm in Watsonville.

I've been to a couple San Jose meetups. It was really exciting to meet like-minded folks, but it's not always convenient to make it up that way. MMM's recent urban tribe post inspired me to seek out Mustachians in the 831/Monterey Bay area. With gloomy summer ending, fall could be a nice time for a park or beach picnic.

Hey, just registered here but have been lurking the antimustachian thread for a while. We're in the Santa Cruz mountains, so not too far!

Awesome, glad you made it official!

Pretty sure I've seen at least a couple other users who are from the area (come on out folks). Maybe there are other lurkers too!

No unfortunately I wasn't planning to go to the Skypark concert, too much to do this weekend.

The Capitola Begonia Festival on Labor Day weekend (namely the parade on Sunday) is pretty enjoyable, but I'm not going this year.

I live downtown Santa Cruz. Would love to get together with some like minded folks. The "tribe" article really resonated with me as well.

Three's a crowd, and we've got at least four. Let's trying scheduling something!

I'm available the weekends of October 3-4 and 24-25. (Will also likely head to Santa Cruz those weekends for Costco.)
Wednesday evenings work too; I like the idea of avoiding South Bay spill-over.

Somewhere in Santa Cruz probably makes sense, being central to the posters so far. Coffee shop? Brewery? Park? Farmer's market?

I'm unavailable the Oct 3/4 weekend; not sure yet about the weekend later in October. Weekdays other than Friday, daytime or evening work well for me. Prefer not too late in the evening.

By the beard of Zeus! finally some fellow mustachians nearest my area. I'm still located somewhat far...Merced CA in the middle of the central valley of sukka-realm CA. Growing up and living in the CV is a special kind of hell for a recently self-aware mustachian. I'm labeled on the map as "Lone Wolfstache."

Very exciting!

I'm fairly available at the moment. The October 3-4 or 24-25 weekends would work for me. Wednesday evenings I couldn't meet up until 7pm.

Meeting places: on the weekends, Santa Cruz Mission (free admission, close by parking and picnic tables), Trescony Park (very small, but has playground and a couple tables, lawn area). Evening: Santa Cruz Brewery, Verve coffee place. Very open to other suggestions- just thought I'd get the ball rolling so we can set the details.

Ok let's call it!

Saturday, October 24 at noon
Santa Cruz Mission
Bring your own food, sharing snacks optional.

First to arrive claims a picnic table? I'm not familiar with the location, would this be in the Mission Plaza or across the street on the actual Mission grounds?

I'll be wearing a name tag with my forum handle and a mustache on it.

Does this work for everyone?

Awesome! Thanks for calling it!

Santa Cruz Mission Adobe has tables/benches/logs/seating areas. Mission Plaza is grassy and open- we could bring some blankets but there's only a couple benches. I'd vote for the state park on School Street- http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=548

Looking forward to meeting folks!

I'm sure you're plenty Mustachian enough! It's our bad assity that counts!

If it makes you feel any better, I'm new to the blog and the forum and *gasp* even have some debt emergency going on. But I'm really looking forward to meeting some awesome new folks in the area and expanding our tribes! Hope you'll be able to make it.

Hey Santa Cruzers! Great to find you here!

I spend quite a bit of time in SC, but unfortunately don't think I'll be in town on the 24th. Will definitely attend if plans change. Will also keep tabs on this thread for future gatherings!

http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=548 is a beautiful location, there's a couple of great view-ey overlooks of the downtown.

Random thread entry---

Monterey Bay Aquarium has free entry from now until Sunday (December 13 2015) for residents of Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey counties.

We went yesterday and it was grand! And not too crowded. The weekend might be a little more trafficked...

You're welcome!

I think the video presentations are very well done. I've seen the sea otter one and the shark one; my fiancee saw a few others and said they were all good. They make you feel involved in the significant conservation mission of the aquarium. Also the feedings are a lot of fun. The penguin one isn't so great because its very children-centric and is an absolute circus on weekends (imagine free week would be even worse.) The otters are fun to watch eating. Deep sea isn't very exciting to watch feeding except that the anchovies swarm in a bit of a frenzy. Kelp forest feedings have divers, so I imagine that's fun (though I haven't seen that one.)

Here is the daily schedule so you can get to the feedings. On weekends you'll not want to be later than 20 minutes early, I'd say.   http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/visit/daily-schedule

Ironically, I'm avoiding the aquarium this week because it's surely crowded (also because I have exams.) The student membership is only $50 and I'm happy to support their work, so the other weeks of the year are my time.

Let's throw something on the calendar!

I'd be willing to host a potluck/game night downtown Santa Cruz- is there a Sunday evening that works for most of us? How does January 24th look?

I'm interested and as of now that date looks good for me but I can't make a firm commitment yet. We hope to get in some skiing in January and haven't sorted out our dates yet.

Sorry I've missed once again! I had my eye on it, and then my roommates and I made a last minute decision to go skiing for the weekend. I'm only in the area for one winter, so I decided I needed to make as many Tahoe trips as possible; it's my third priority this quarter, after passing my classes and getting some good research done.

So I just learned that whole foods (at least, the one in Monterey) has stopped selling bulk spices. Does anyone know another good place to buy spices by weight?

I get them at Staff of Life in Santa Cruz; they have a great selection of bulk spices and grains, and prices tend to be lower than Whole Foods. If you're in Monterey, I would try some of the ethnic stores either there or in Marina for spices - they aren't in bulk, but they tend to be quite a bit less expensive.

I don't know if this fits anyone's bill for entertainment, but the naval academy glee club is in the SF area doing a few free shows. I've heard them and found them to be pretty decent. Anyway, I attached a screenshot of a pdf because I can't figure out how to get an image into my post.
