UPDATE:
Looks like several of us will be staying here:
https://highwaywestvacations.com/properties/canyonlands
This place can accommodate tents, RVs (within limitations), and folks who would prefer to stay in small cabins. Hotels can also be found nearby (within walking distance, I believe). October in Moab can get busy, so if you are interested, you might make your reservations soon (and check the cancellation policy, of course). Hope to see lots of mustachians in Moab in about 11 months!!
* * *
Seems like quite a few folks enjoy Moab or would like to visit it. I live just a few hours from there and enjoy both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks frequently.
As I will most likely retire in the summer of 2018, how about if some of us gather in Moab to help me celebrate my freedom and my ability to, at that point, spend as much time as I want to in beautiful places like Moab?
Yes, it's a ways off, but here is a place we can start throwing ideas around.
So far, we are thinking of using a group campsite at Arches, which is just outside Moab. Moab itself has hotels and airbnb options for those who might not want to camp.
At Arches, the Canyon Wren group camp site can accommodate 35 people, while the Juniper Basin site can fit 55!
You can read more about Arches here (https://www.nps.gov/arch/index.htm).
And here (http://www.recreation.gov/camping/devils-garden-campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=74066) is where campsites are reserved.
It's a beautiful place. It would be a really fun time.

I'm in, but I am a wimp and will be staying in Moab. Any other wimps want to go in with me?

Oh, and I guess the gathering is being dubbed "Hot Flash 2018", but pre-menopausal women (and men!) are also welcome!!
Thanks to Exhale for helping to get this idea off the ground!
These 2 years will fly by--right? right??
-
Happiness!
Sounds like a great way to meet the needs of folks with children and without, all levels of "affordable," etc.
-
That's too far out to confirm for sure, but definitely interested! :)
-
I'm in and can't wait to celebrate NinetyFour's FIRE!
NinetyFour, if you're in Arches again anytime soon, perhaps you can scope out the campsites (wish I'd thought of it while I was there). I saw online that both of the group sites were labelled "tent only" which I assume means you couldn't bring your camper. (Does that sound right? Or is there some fine print that I missed that allows vans and campers?) BTW - due to construction, Devils Garden Campground will be closed March 1, 2017 through October 31, 2017.
-
Hmm, I'm definitely interested but may be in Poland by then... Let's see how my plans shape up.
-
I was thinking about attending Prospectors Camp Mustache Ontario next October; and could not do both. But then I re-read the title and see your talking the following year.
So I'll post to follow, been dreaming of Mountain biking in Moab for over 20 years. I'd def be up for a group campsite. That sounds Awesome!!
Of course as others have mentioned, no idea what 2 years will bring.
-
We are interested.
-
October 2018 is my earliest and most likely retirement date. I have been dreaming of a trip to the US to travel the West, California, Nevada, Arizona and the parks of Utah. This could be an ideal opportunity to include Moab and meet some leading Mustachians! I am tentatively in. Just have to persuade the DW to get on a plane to the States(think B.A. Baracus).
-
This sounds amazing! I've never been to that part of the country, and a road trip out there is on my list for post-FIRE. Since I'm looking at April 2018 for FIRE, that should work ... EXCEPT ... I'm planning to take 3-4 months of FIRE-dom and then head back to school full time in Fall 2018.
Maybe I could work it as a fly-in weekender rather than a road trip. It's a possibility!

Will we sing campfire songs?? Who here plays guitar??

Who here plays guitar??
Not me, but I can rock a rhythm egg.

I thought that was a Catholic thing...
Funny.

Sounds fun. Let's do it.

This sounds interesting - might even revise my opinion of The Arches. But probably not - there is NO WAY it will not be overcrowded.

Even in October? At least less crowded than June-September...
Having been in a Australian national parks with Deborah and discussed this topic, she's right.
Australia rarely has all 12 residents in one place at the same time, so our parks, even at their low point, seem relatively crowded. ;)

From what I read on Mountain biking forums I get the impression October is more or less "high" season for Moab due to the Summers being so hot. Not sure about the National parks themselves.
But crowded is relative of course. Having spent time in Acadia, Shenandoah, and Great smokies pretty much any Park West of the Mississippi never feels crowded to me.
-

That's why going in autumn (I was just there) and staying in the park itself key. Staying in the park gives us easy access to the less crowded times of day. If we bring headlamps/flashlights we can also spend sunrise/sunset at some awesome locations. Note: the Needles section of Canyonlands is amazing and wasn't at all crowded when I was there last week (people don't take the time to go since it's further away from Moab).
-
I went to the Arches in October - 9th October 2015 to be precise. There was a queue over half a mile long to enter (I measured it with my GPS - I had NEVER been in a queue that long - I figured that the gate was half a mile from the road to cater for long queues at the entrance). Every trail was littered with people. If you don't call that overcrowded, I don't know what is. I went on to Dead Horse Gully and Canyonlands that day, after deciding that The Arches was really, seriously far too overcrowded for me to enjoy it. This was several days before I decided that the Grand Canyon was even more overcrowded, but it didn't have much of a queue at the entrance.
Last weekend I went to the Mount Samaria Park - roughly 1/4 the size of The Arches - and there was NO-ONE there except me (not even a ranger), in the entire park. The day was beautiful - sunny and not a cloud in the sky. The birds were amazing, the waterfalls were in full flow and I was there ALL BY MYSELF. I even saw one of the rare wallabies. And it is in the most populous state in Australia.
But crowded is relative of course. Having spent time in Acadia, Shenandoah, and Great smokies pretty much any Park West of the Mississippi never feels crowded to me.
I recently went to Uluru (which is known for being crowded, being one of the major Australian draw cards), and it had far fewer people than The Arches, Bryce Canyon, or The Grand Canyon. If there are places that are more crowded, I'm not interested.
If I come to this occasion, I wouldn't be able to bring much. Would I be able to come?

When is a less crowded time of the day? I was there early in the morning. I agree, the Needles wasn't crowded.

Last week is was a 12-minute wait to get into Arches (at 11:00 a.m.). I found convenient parking everywhere I went to hike.

Sunrise and sunset during the week are my favorites.

Like ARS, this is a bit too far ahead on the calendar for me to commit to yet...but October is usually when I migrate down to Baja. And a quick glance at a map shows that Moab is sort of "on the way". So I'd like to think I could do a "stop over" in Utah. Never been to Utah. :)
-
I hope you can come in 2018. But even if it doesn't work out for a visit at that time, SW Utah is not to be missed. It has utterly jaw-dropping landscape - think enormous rock formations, miles of slick rock (which I love to hike on), everything all shades of red. Truly, it's deeply grounding, elemental, and provides food for the soul.
-
OMG I'll follow this thread! (But not sure about Moab in SUMMER...)
The Colorado Plateau is my heaven, I visit every year, wander miles into the canyons by myself and ponder existential questions among (what is to me) the most ineffable landscape in the world. "Utterly jaw dropping," as Exhale described, is the closest I can come. One of my FIRE bucket list items is spending 4-6 months in southern Utah and if I like it enough, owning real estate in Moab or up in the Torrey area and generating VRBO or Airbnb cashflow. (Folks who market their properties right seem to have them booked solid 6-7 months out of the year and appear to generate good cashflow.)
I have to say though, Moab is a pretty miserable place to visit from March-October because of the insane crowds in the spring/fall and the 100+ heat in the summer. I always visit in the winter - it's best kept secret. Crystal blue skies, 55-60 degrees in the sun (perfect for hiking) and I have the entire place to myself. I've hiked miles and miles deep into Arches and Canyonlands in December, driven in for free because no rangers are manning the stations, been one of about 8-10 people up contemplating Delicate Arch, sat for 2 hours alone at Mesa Arch and rarely see another soul on the majority of trails. BLM lands are even more sparse!
-
Well I have trouble planning two weeks in advance, let alone two years, but for now, mark me down as interested and tentative :)
-
Sounds good to me!
-
Love Moab and will be newly retired that summer as well. I would love to join.
-
There's a possibility I'll be in Canada autumn 2018 so this is really quite close, isn't it? Relatively speaking?
-
(following)
A bit far out for scheduling. I can only say *perhaps* Mother Fussbudget can make it. We'll see - sounds fun.
-
I am very interested. In fact, I am also interested in participating in a 2017 edition if people think we could benefit from doing a dry run of the event. ;-)

I like the way you think..
-
2017 is a good possibility for us as well, and much less time to wait. :) Be cool if it was a few weeks after the Ontario event, so one could attend both.
-
At Arches, the Canyon Wren group camp site can accommodate 35 people, while the Juniper Basin site can fit 55!
Just FYI - These group site do not allow RV's. People with RV's can book their own sites in the campground which would only be a short walk from the group sites but just something to keep in mind and coordinate.
In my experience booking State and National Parks during prime time you need to book a LONG way in advance. Like for our beach trip to Assatequae Island in MD if you want to stay June 23, 2017 you need to book it June 24, 2016 as soon as they go online. If you wait until say a week later on June 30, they are all typically booked.
Not all parks are like that but we have had similar experience at Grand Canyon, Mt Rushmore, Yellowstone, etc. Of course you can occasionally find cancellations or adjust dates or whatever; but that would be harder coordinating a large group especially with people flying and stuff.
All that is to say to the last 3 posters if October 2017 is in play someone probably needs to start planning -
With that in mind I'll point out that the Campground (Devil's Garden) mentioned by OP with the 2 group sites is closed from March 1 - October 31 2017 for a Major construction project.
Obviously plenty of other camping/lodging options, just not that one for next Oct.
-
There's also BLM land with campgrounds right?
http://www.discovermoab.com/campgrounds_blm.htm

http://www.blm.gov/ut/st/en/fo/moab/recreation/campgrounds/where_else_can_i_camp.html
BLM campgrounds have the advantage of being free and first come first serve (maybe the latter makes it hard to plan a group event), appears they also group campsites on the BLM grounds which you can reserve.
Never been to Utah, so I don't know if the BLM lands are nearby at all, but thought I would throw it out there.
I can only imagine how hard it is planning something for a large group. People who do it are heros.
Realized Oct 2017 might not work out with some other life stuff, but still curious if anyone is up there.
-
Sounds like a good time! I'd like to consider going to this. My camping experience is minimal and I'd have to purchase a tent, but it sounds fun.
-
This sounds interesting - might even revise my opinion of The Arches. But probably not - there is NO WAY it will not be overcrowded.
I was just in Moab for 1st two weeks in Oct. The town was a gong show and I never made it into Arches due to the massive lineups at the gate. That said if you skipped town there are plenty of free camping options in the local area that would be less busy and equally nice. I was thinking my next trip to Moab would be later in the season. You risk colder weather, but that's worth it to me to have a less hectic experience.
Edit: noticed that this was for 2018 not 2017....wow that's some long range planning! I'd be interested and likely available. I'll be doing a lot of MTBing and then hooking up with peeps for social time in the evenings. If there are any other MTBers coming PM me and we can coord some shredding. :)

Regarding long lines at the gates. Could people who are staying in town bike there and bypass the lines? A quick mapping says it's only 5 miles from Moab to the park entrance, but I could mapping the wrong locations. A 30 minute bike ride sounds better than waiting hours in line in your car.

You can definitely bike to Moab from Arches and back if you are reasonably fit. I rode to Moab from trails that were much further away at the end of my ride. I don't know whether bikes can jump the line up or not.
-

Oh yeah, plenty of options. Just pointing out the one OP mentioned looks closed for 2017.
First come first serve BLM seems to be the way a lot of folks on the Mountain biking and off road forums do it. But like you say would be tough to coordinate a big group for something like that.
I can only imagine how hard it is planning something for a large group. People who do it are heros.
Didn't you mention you were looking for a hobby (;
-
I am definitely interested, posting to follow! I visited Moab twice while living in Salt Lake City, really only scratched the surface of the trails around there.
Retire-Canada, would love to ride with you if this all works out!
-
For those that want semi-camping or deluxe camping I have stayed at the Canyonlands Campground in Moab. They have Rvs sites, tent sites and small cabins. They have wifi, laundromat, showers, toilets and a heated pool. Located in Moab you can walk to all amenities from there.
Although not the cheapest most basic option it might make for a good base of operations where pretty much everyone could find what they are looking for [hotel across the road]. Also to make organizing simpler everyone could book their own accommodation and all we'd need to do is agree on a set of dates.
My personal preference is for more rustic free/wild camping, but I organize trips for groups all the time and finding a middle ground to keep everyone together can be worth the compromise.
-
...Edit: noticed that this was for 2018 not 2017....wow that's some long range planning!...
2018 is when NinetyFour will be FIRE. So this is basically gong to be a big FIRE party to launch NinetyFour into the FIRE years. :-)

The second year could be for that purpose. The first year could be to convince her to not OMY past that. ;)

No I understand why it's 2018. It's still a heck of a long way out to try and organize a trip. Not many people make vacation plans 2yrs out.
I'm a planner so it doesn't bother me and my plan is to downshift and be working PT in 2018 so that lines up well with my own situation. ;)

I was fooling around on google earth and discovered that Moab is almost equidistant from both Vancouver and my current location on the southern tip of the Baja. I'll take this as some sort of a sign that come October 2018 I should drive from Vancouver down to Baja (I have flown for the past 25 years) and make a rather awesome "detour" to Moab on the way.
Yes...this must happen.

I've driven to Baja from Calgary and Vancouver a dozen times or more. It's a pleasant trip once you are past "winter" conditions. I really enjoy the trip down the Baja. So beautiful and the driving is more interesting if slower. :)

Crazy damn long drive too. :) And my 16 year old pickup, as much as I love it, is not exactly the most accomplished highway cruiser, though off-road it is a boss. The seats have to be some of the worst ever designed, so I think I need to switch them out for new ones with more lower back and thigh support. How could Toyota get so many things right with the Tacoma yet strike out so badly with the seat design?

Here are my
pro "Mistakes I have Made" tips for camping Moab: (1) Carry a 5 gallon water jug (or destroy the environment with a case of disposable water bottles, but have lots of water in your car) (2) Fill your car with gas before driving to Needles (3) National Park campgrounds are opened for reservations on a rolling 6 month calendar (register for October in April). (4) Ranger-led Fiery Furnace walk at Arches is AWESOME and doable by anyone that can crawl on knees and climb a ladder - reservations for limited availability also on a 6 month rolling calendar. (5) Camping in Arches in the winter is awesome - first come first serve, but no one was there when I went in February.
I am always up for a trip to Moab. I bring my photo gear and practice my landscapes (sunrise/sunsets) and astrophotography skills. I always run into other photographers, including the anti-mustachian folks that spend $1000s to be on a guided expedition and stand next to each other to shoot the same shots. Don't get me wrong - I get the same shots, just not at the cost of $1000's to be there.
Looking forward to seeing others in Moab sometime. -ap.

You should go to Mutawintji or Lake Mungo (or anywhere in Western NSW) or even Arkaroola.

I'm am tentatively in as well, hopefully we are still in Utah in 2018!

I am off to Utah in a few minutes. Planning to be at the Canyonlands Needles campground, but I might mosey over to Arches as well. Will be fantasizing about our October 2018 party!!

I just got back from 5 days in Moab! Great weather but it's still a little crowded for my tastes but I had to go before Thanksgiving this year instead of my usual December. Spent most of my time out of the Nat'l Parks - instead on BLM trails and in Sand Flats (GREAT hiking up there, you can hike those bike and 4x4 trails). I've always driven into Arches and Canyonlands for free in December but judging by the huge line of cars waiting to get into Arches on Saturday, the booths are still very much manned and collecting lots of revenue!

Yes I didn't go near the Nat'l Parks in October. Nothing about a long line up of cars makes me want to join that parade. There is so much amazing desert to explore in that area that's not crowded with people.
-
I've got to admit, the talk of crowds does give me considerable pause...nice to hear that they can be avoided. The 4X4'ing possibilities down there have me drooling a bit. ;)

Have a look at the trails on
http://www.rr4w.com/
Then have a look at the ratings. Out mountain biking, especially during Jeep Week, I've seen units on some of the 7 - 10 trails. They are not kidding about rollovers. When one of them goes over, the others run out a fretwork of winch straps, and somebody starts giving the orders. In a minute, it topples back over into just the position it should have been in when it tried the problem. They are also, in the ratings, not kidding about required equipment, and about having some driving skills. When you meet them out on the rock, even if you are one of the self-reported good drivers that 90% of us claim to be, you will see skill you never imagined. Because I have to confess - they bring this up repeatedly - that I have low tolerance for body damage, and because I am clearly not the hotshit driver I thought I was, I am limited to class 4 or maybe on a good, lucky day, 5.
So, one possibility during the meet-up is a 4-wheeler SIG. Another is to gather some people and rent road lice (UTVs), or if there are doubts, do a group UTV trip with a paid guide. My swedish rels did this and were so excited and happy afterward that they could hardly settle down.
October is usually thought too late, but lots of times there is wonderful hot weather then, and a raft trip on the Daily section of the Colorado would be another possibility.
-
I spend the week of Thanksgiving in/near Moab every year to go climbing, it's a magical place. Always stay at the BLM campsites out in Indian Creek (take 191 out of town and bang a right on 211 til you see turnoffs for campgrounds). There are multiple large group sites, and they're stunning. Many are free.
https://www.blm.gov/ut/st/en/fo/monticello/recreation/activities/camping/Indian_Creek_Camping.html
Maybe I'll make the November pilgrimage a little early in 2018. :)
-
I probably drove right past you last week! I arrived at Canyonlands on Sunday and left on Thursday. Hope you enjoyed your week of climbing!
-
Awesome! Stop by our dirtbag campfire next time! Hope you enjoyed Canyonlands -- hiking in there is unreal. Hope you didn't get rained on too bad on Monday.
-
Pencil me in! I won't know for sure until a year from January if I can make it, but it sounds like fun. I live in northern Utah and haven't been to Arches or the surrounding parks since I was a kid.
-

Whereabouts do you camp? I saw lots of climber/camper groups along the way. BTW, the climbing you all do is crazy amazing!!! Probably the most "technical" climb I have done is Pilot Knob in the San Juan mountains. I have lots of help from experts, thank goodness!
Yeah, that storm was something. I was snug in my camper, so I was fine. Hope you also had decent shelter!

I can't wait to go back.

Thanks @RetireInCanada for showing me this
I am in for the 2018 but really hope this has a "test run" in 2017
I explored the entire region by myself in Fall of 2015, I went in November and had the entire place to myself.
As being an MMM I documented the full trip and how much I spent :)
http://www.chrisistace.com/2016/01/02/going-for-it-a-solo-adventure/ (http://www.chrisistace.com/2016/01/02/going-for-it-a-solo-adventure/)
Would love to head down there with you guys ! I'll bring the bike this time but I love hiking as well. I hiked into every arch in the park.
-

I'll be down in the SW desert in 7 - 21 Oct 2017, but I'll be heading towards Gooseberry Mesa/Sedona/Prescott.
-
I will still be working in October 2017, but I could be in the Moab area on weekends (except for 10/7 and 10/21). I can't wait to see red rocks again--it's been a loooooog winter!
-
My son and I took a trip to the area last summer. Here is the map I made with potential activities ( mostly hiking and national parks, monuments, etc... ). We spent a bit of time in Moab and it was great!
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1CNQcPazvrNZLkDJndQHu4er2sYM&usp=sharing
Thought it might help some of you as far as planning goes. I spent a LOT of time on it.
Edit : I also threw some pictures up on the map above.
By the way, this was a GREAT route! I want to go back soon because we didn't have nearly enough time to see everything!
-
P2F. Just maybe.
I love Arches. Visited in Sep couple years ago. Was crowded but still wonderful, if you can rise early.

Arches will probably be the most crowded park in the area. It was a zoo when we were there.
If you can make it out to some of the more out of the way sites in the area, the crowds were negligible, even in peak season. When I say 'area'..I mean the general SE Utah area....not Moab area.
Some that come to mind are Natural Bridges National Monument, Navajo National Monument, Hovenweep Monument, etc...
One thing to absolutely avoid is Four Corners....they have turned it into a ridiculously bad tourist trap ( 5$ per person ). Just look it up on TripAdvisor...and you will learn all you need to know.
-
Yes Arches was packed to the gills last Oct and every other amazing spot in the Moab area we went to had tons of space/room. In most cases once we got a short distance away from the parking lot we were alone.

Goblin Valley State Park is pretty strange place worth a stop, but one of the most beautiful and seldom-visited slot canyons in Utah is at the same location: Little Wild Horse Canyon. I highly recommend a hike there. Ap

Thanks for the tip! I saved it off in Google Maps. However, looking at the satellite view on Google maps, it looks like the word must be out. Lots of cars in the parking lot! It must have been peak season.
-
Remember nowadays we have lazy tourists....parking lots may be full but they rarely venture anywhere that takes any real effort :)
-
Definitely interested. DH and I should be retired by then. Heading there for vacation this weekend actually...We will see how crowded Arches is. If its too bad, we will go straight to Canyonlands. :)
-
A MMM meet up and mtn biking in Moab. Sounds fantastic! Would love to come but can't commit yet. We have learned the hard way that when kids hit jr high they can't miss weeks or months of school roaming with the family. Drat. Freedom is curtailed for a few years.
-
Definitely interested. Down for 2017 and 2018 as of right now. 2017 would have to be before or after CMC.
-
Posting to follow, hard to say what Fall 2018 will bring yet!
I'd be torn between flying and renting everything vs. trying to make the drive to bring my Mountain bike and camping stuff.
Either way Mtn biking in Moab has been on my bucket list for 20 years so it'd be cool to do it and meet a bunch of Forum folk in the process :)
-
I just drove through Moab and this place looks amazing! I am in for 2018 and conditional on the exact dates, I would likely do 2017 as well. Mountain biking looks really good in the area, but it's rock climbing that is likely to get all my attention for the first few times over there.
-
I may have lost track of the dates.....did we pick specific dates for this meet up? If not can we at least nail it down to a specific week in Oct 2018? I need to plan ahead to make a trip that far happen and I suspect others will also.
-
I think Ninety Four the OP is taking a bit if a break from the forums so not sure if this meet up will still go as planned. I'd be interested if it happens but can't make plans that far ahead. I can barely commit to plan a week or day from now ;-).
I'll be in Moab mountain biking one way or the other so I am cool to do a Meet Up regardless of what 94 decides to do.
Unless someone has a better idea how about we shoot for 19-22 Oct 2018? That's 4 days over a weekend. If 94 gets back on the forums in next few months and wants to change to a different date that's fine and if not those of us keen on Moab have a date to shoot for when it's time to carve out holidays and make travel plans.
-
Another great group spot in the Moab area are the three yurts at Dead Horse Point State Park. Better than a hotel and away from the madness of downtown Moab. We stayed there last October before our canoe trip down the Green River. Great spot!

+1.
90% is a high number.
I'm not 90% sure where I'll be staying tomorrow, let alone next year! :)

Agreed.
Perhaps we could indicate "the probability" of our attendance (based on what we know today).
Obviously that probability would change over time, but it would at least be an indication of interest.

That high number is intentional. I organize a lot of events and tons of people want to get involved in planning a trip like this while far fewer actually go. It sucks to end up in Moab at campground X that people lobbied for who didn't follow through and attend. While realizing everyone who showed up prefered another option.
If you are not sure you are coming it's okay not to be on that list until you are. No harm is done. It just let's those of use who are quite confident we are going know who to listen to as plans are discussed vs. suggestions thrown out by folks who are not [at least at this point] coming.
There are no extra points awarded for being on the list early. If you are not fairly sure you are coming what's the point of putting your name on the list??? Following this thread and commenting on the event is essentially the "I'm not sure if I am going, but I am interested" list.

For anyone wanting to do a trial run in October 2017, be aware that there is construction in Arches. The campground there is closed through November 2017.
The group campsite in the Squaw Flat CG in Canyonlands (Needles district) is not available any weekend in October or November (2017).
If folks have other suggestions for a place to convene in October 2017, I'd be game (except for the weekend of Camp Mustache Canada (October 21).

I'm happy to do that if that's where people want to be. As you might know, RC, this particular CG is a good hour (or maybe even 90 minutes) away from Moab.
Also, I can't reserve it until April 2018 (6 months prior to our event).

Sorry I meant the one in Arches. When can we book that group site?
-
Oh, OK.
It looks like I can book that 1 year in advance. I will make a note on my calendar! :)
I guess there are 2 group campsites at Arches: Canyon Wren and Juniper. I believe Juniper gets a bit more shade (I could be wrong), but other than that, I don't know them well enough to have a preference.

Unless someone else who is planning on attending has a preference between those or wants to suggest a different location I am good with you picking. Do you need deposits from people who are coming to make the reservation or are you okay to collect money on site at the event?
-
Man it would be nerveracking to be around a bunch of Mustachians in a way. I'd feel the need to explain how I had gotten everything I was wearing on sale and how I had brewed the ethanol to power the car to get to Moab myself.

I'll be there in my F150 clown truck riding a $7K mountain bike. Both bought new. So don't worry I'll draw away any Frugality Police. ;)

Oh good, I am pretty sure the frugality police would have a field day with me.
I personally am happy with either of the campsites so happy to leave it to whichever one will be available to book. :)
-
I'm OK with making the reservation and then extorting money from folks at the campsite later. ;-)
I'll be there with my clown car Tundra and a $15K camper, no there will be no face punches from me! :)
-
I've done a LOT of Mustachian meetups.
There's no judgement. Everyone has some anti-Mustachian things.
Don't worry about it. :)
-
I had never really looked at what the group sites cost as was never applicable to me. It definitely is a lot more affordable than the individual campsite at $25 per night.
Fees
Campground
Nightly Fee
Devils Garden $25
Canyon Wren Group Site 11-16 campers = $75
17-22 campers = $100
23-28 campers = $125
29-35 campers = $160
Juniper Group Site 11-22 campers = $100
23-33 campers = $150
34-44 campers = $200
45-55 campers = $250

I'm just finding out about this thread. I'm tentatively interested in both a 2017 and 2018 gathering. There are quite a few of us who live in northern Utah who get together every 6-8 weeks already. I don't think any of them have seen this thread yet, so I'll put it out there for them, too.
If people do want to come to Utah for an Oct. 2017 gathering, there are certainly plenty of other parks, too. So the Arches construction doesn't need to kill that idea.
-
Hard to commit this far out but this would be awesome for two reasons: 1) I also plan to FIRE about that time, and 2) when younger I did mountain biking all over Moab and Canyonlands.
FWIW, I still ride the same MTB...

Given the current attendee list I don't think nailing down the exact numbers are important yet. When roll into the spring of 2018 maybe add some clarity on that.

We are only 50% ers right now, but we are still very interested.
Even would consider the 2017 one from what it looks like today.
Most group campgrounds usually don't have space for RVs though,
so we'd have to plan to be close enough within the same park or in nearby BLM / NF
-
I enjoy dirtbag accommodations
I enjoy hikes
I enjoy mountain bikes
I will join @Frugalzony in the ranks of the 50% 'ers as who knows what life will be doing in 18 months. I will stick to @RC's rules on the list criteria for being listed.
As well here are a few teaser photos I took on a trip there in 2015...it is a beautiful place and I can't wait to experience the further reaches via a MTB. So hopefully this helps a few more consider joining in on the fun.

So THIS year, Moab is out of the question for us, as I'll have to be elsewhere to tend to family matters. I had hoped I could join those of you doing a trial run.

Posting to follow and interested. I'm actually going to Zion in 2 weeks, hope it's not too crowded!

EarthSurfer is highly probable to drift on by.
Be certain to understand parking restrictions at groups sites. At my favorite group site in Canyonlands NP, SplitTop Cave (insanely awesome), only 3 vehicles are allowed to park, although there is a large parking area about a 10 minute walk away.
Is anyone interested in an overnight backpack in the Needles district of Canyonlands either before or after? (One night because I hate carrying water...). I would also be interested in venturing to the San Rafael Swell to explore a few slot canyon hikes (non-technical) for a few days.
I am a minimalist car camper -- essentially a backpacker with a cooler and a mini SUV.

I'll be flying in from the east coast with nothing more than what I take for backpacking, so I'm interested in making a longer trip out of it - so, count me in!

Hi Earthsurfer---
I might be interested in joining you on that backpack trip. Not sure whether before or after would work better for me, but we have some time to make that decision. :)

For a Canyonlands Needles District overnight backpack, I am considering the Elephant Canyon - Big Spring Canyon Loop hike. It has some fun scrambling, and is relatively easy 11 miles. It can be done as a day hike, too.
http://bit.ly/2x9Mzpj (http://bit.ly/2x9Mzpj)
Check out the photos at the link above for a sense of the terrain. In the late 90s, this was the default Thanksgiving backpack with a crew of friends for 4 years.
I can easily be convinced to try something more ambitious, but a fun, chill overnight is plenty of adventure. I can still do big miles, but I hate, loathe, and distain carrying significant amounts of water, which is likely a requirement in October.
On Oct 19, 2018, sunrise will be approximately 7:30am, sunset at 6:34pm, with about 12 hours of usable outdoor light.
On Oct 19, 2018, the moon will be waxing, rising around 4:24pm, and setting around 3:20am. It will be ~80% illuminated.

Just as a FYI I am planning on being in the general Moab area 1 week before and 2 weeks after the Oct 2018 meet up to camp and mountain bike if anyone else wants to hook up for some sportiness and beers. I may roam between Hurricane, UT, Moab, Fruita CO and Grand Junction, CO depending on how I feel, weather, etc... No need to make specific plans now, but I thought I would throw the idea out there in case other folks had extra time and wanted to explore the area more.
-
As I will be retired (!!!!!!!) at that point, I will be able to hang out over/up there for a good while. I hope to receive
some lots of MTB riding and maintenance tips from you, RC!!
By the way, I am thinking of heading over to the Canyonlands Needles District tomorrow for the weekend. Snow has hit the high country here in CO, so I must escape to find some warm weather and dry hiking trails!!
-
I was just in Moab last weekend with family. We stayed at ACT Campground about 3 minutes south of the main drag. It was a great place, with spots for tents and RVs, plus "cabin style" rooms that have 2-3 futon beds and a refrigerator and microwave. It's got a big community outdoor kitchen area, and indoor kitchen, a nice fire pit, games and things for kids. It's quite reasonable as far as Moab's in-town accommodations go, and perfect for large groups. There's even a 30-foot yurt you can pack 'em into. If anyone is going to be in the area and doesn't want to rough it in the parks, I highly recommend. http://actcampground.com/campground-details/prices/ (http://actcampground.com/campground-details/prices/)
-
OK--we're coming up on this meetup being just (!) a year away. This means that I could try to reserve a group campsite at either Arches or Canyonlands soon. (Has to be done online for some locations, and I can't make the reservation more than a year in advance.)
I need some guidance. Should I go ahead and try to reserve a group camping site? If we stay in one of these parks, we would be 20 - 80 miles away from Moab itself. Or should I just wait and see what shakes out on this thread...?
Foundapenny--thanks for the info on ACT Campground. Looks like that might be a nice option. It would mean, though, driving into the parks from there.
Suggestions, anyone?
Thanks.
-
@NinetyFour you are the original poster of this thread. We'll go with whatever you want to do.
In your original post you discussed the two group campsites in Arches. I'm perfectly fine with that choice.
We are just two days away from when it is possible to book those sites for the Fri Oct 19 - Mon Oct 22, 2018 event.
The Canyon Wren group campsite looks like it may already be taken for these upcoming dates by a group that is arriving earlier than the 18th.
The Juniper Basin group campsite looks like it is currently available for the dates leading up to Oct 18, 2018.
In two more days, you can attempt to book the 4-day weekend.
@NinetyFour, are you ok with booking Juniper Basin on Oct 18? Are you ok with taking the temporary hit of $400 (4 nights x $100/night) until everyone arrives to pay you in person?
-
With the choice of campgrounds, are there limitations on if they are RV friendly or tent only? I thought this was discussed but now can't remember
-
Others who are reading this thread and may be interested, need to be aware about the following for these group camping sites:
- this group site has no room for RVs (see the parking situation on the google maps photo below). RVs may be able to book adjoining sites.
- there is no electricity (even adjoining RV sites have no electricity)
- There are vault toilets (not flush toilets) beside this group campsite.
- There is no cell/wifi signal.
- There is no camp store (The campsite is 46 minutes (23 miles) away from the city of Moab.)
In other words, we are roughing it.
I'm good with this. This is how I normally camp anyway. (i.e. car camping with a cooler and a tent.)
-
I also would like the RV option. We don't need hookups or electricity, just a spot of dirt to park on, but needs to be accessible by a truck sized vehicle basically.
-
I would say you hold out for a few ore days until @RetireCanada gets back from his MTB trip. He has the camping hacks pretty dialed and stays down here pretty much every year. I would think we should be somewhere centrally located for hiking and mountain biking opportunities. Outside of Canyonlands and Arches parks would probably best as well.

+1 As long as we can park the van, we are set. If however that's not possible, I know there is tons of camping sites along the river just outside Arches for about $15 per night. So I can always make do with that if needed.

I think waiting for RC to chime in is a good idea. Even though I live a lot closer to Moab than he does, he has probably spent more time there and knows more about camping options outside of the National Parks.
When we eventually decide on a location, I will most likely be able to get out there well before other folks to claim the spot, as I will be very happily retired at that point!! :D

Lots of big sites that are free BLM land and RV accessible off Willow Springs road just north of town. That’s where we boondock with big groups. You do need somebody to get there early to bag your site as it is a free-for-all area. Great location for riding being right next to the Klonzo trail system and closer to the entrance of Arches NP than town is. In fact if you stay on Willow Springs road it takes you into Arches NP the back way.

I could totally see this in the summer, but is it that busy in October?

Wow. We have visited Moab in early August the last couple years and it seemed plenty busy. I'd hate to visit during the busy season!

I drove in this afternoon and traffic was backed up from the center of town past the intersection of 191 and 128 - 2 miles or so. How much further it extended up toward the Arches entrance I could not tell.

My go to campground for a mixed group is:
https://highwaywestvacations.com/properties/canyonlands
They do RVs, tents, cabins, etc.... They are in town and you can walk to most services including a brew pub, bike shop, grocery store, camping store and numerous restaurants. They have real toilets, showers and a laundromat on site. They also have a pool and a BBQ you can use. There is WiFi, but it's slow.
Personally I'm fine with a dusty zero service free BLM site, but it doesn't sound like that suits the wide variety of people that could show up. So maybe this place is a good option. One downside is that it's in town so it's noisy compared to a campsite out in the boonies. I've used this site with a variety of MTB peeps and everyone was happy except the really light sleepers who wanted to sleep in as the town noise bothered them, but perhaps ear plugs would solve that? I sleep like a log and wake up at 5-6am anyways so it never bothered me.

I'd say whatever location we decide on needs to be reservable months in advance not something we hope to snag on a first-come-first-served basis and hope to get lucky. There are too many people coming from all over to take that risk in my opinion. If it was just 2 or 3 MMMers that would be a different story.

I'm in and adaptable. I can bring my RV (no services needed) or my wee car and tent. I'll likely be solo or may be 1+ with DD (if she is racing in Moab that weekend).
I have been visiting Moab about twice per year for 26 years and was there last weekend. It has progressively gone from sleepy little town in the early 90's to insanely busy today. I agree with RC, deffo go there with supplies and reservations. Picking things up in town or eating out means dealing with lines, crowds and inflated resort prices. Town reportedly was mayhem last weekend. I camped outside of town and never went in.
Willow Springs Rd - I rescind that area from camping recommendations. By noon on Friday last weekend there were perhaps 500 campers there. It was dusty and noisy with generators, kids, Razors, jeeps, dogs, ATV's dirt bikes etc. A new thing in the last year is that everyone now has a bling light bar on their off-road motor machines so the Mad-Max scene doesn't end at sunset like it used to but everyone rallies around with their 2000 lumens on the grill all night. Sheesh/rant. We bailed and camped further up the road...
We were there for the Utah high schools mountain bike race. 2,400 kids raced and each kid comes with their families for an estimated 7 - 8000 people in Moab just for that event. There were a few other events going on last weekend also.
Option: There is a quiet camp ground that is reasonably priced near the junction of Hwy 191 and 313 (about 10 miles north of town). It has no facilities, no hook ups and is usually quiet being located on private property down a dirt road (RV and low clearance 2wd accessible) with a closed gate, no trespassing sign, a keep out sign and a dead end road sign. You can make reservations. It is not on the web. It doesn't have a name. I have the owners phone number. All you get is a flat piece of dirt. It was only 1/2 full last weekend! There are 6 big sites and they are $20/night. Camp sites in town were $75/night last weekend unless you had them booked for a lower price months in advance.
Moab is amazing and I love it. There are so many trails and once we were on the trails away from the roads we didn't see many people but loads of awesome scenery.
I hope this helps. I don't mean to muck up your event planning NinetyFour and am excited to come and meet more MMMers. I've only met 1 so far (Hi RC!!)

The private campground option is good to have in the mix once we see what everyone who is coming is bringing and what their needs/wants are.

Mrs Fredbear and I intend to drop in if no hunting season is open but we stay in town and need no planning for us.
-
I'll thrown my two cents in for accommodations.
We just got back from Moab where we spent four wonderful and relaxing nights at the Dead Horse State Park yurts. There are currently three yurts and while we were there they were building two more near the current ones and an additional three near the campground one mile down the road. The yurts have power, lights, propane stove, bunk bed, pull out couch, dining table, sitting chair, deck w/chairs, bbq w/ propane, outdoor fire pit, and nearby restrooms. Great mountain bike trails start right at the yurts and you are away from the hustle bustle of Moab. The Dead Horse State Park campground has campsites for RVs, etc. Only downside of the yurts is the cost @ $120/night. They can be booked 4 months in advance and are booked pretty much the day they become available.
We also biked at the nearby the BLM Horsethief Campground where I noticed a lot of empty campsites.
-
I'm keeping myself off the exact list of details (people, and mode of accommodation) because I don't know enough for that far in advance, but sure I/we can be flexible.
Regards to the Yurt option, that is $120 / night for how many people? That can be expensive or cheap depending on the number it accommodates, and interesting if it has other camping options in same park.
-
The yurts sleep six maximum w/ a two vehicle limit. I think it's $10 for the additional vehicle. There are a group of five yurts (preferred ones IMO) setup around the parking area and are separated from the main campground by one mile . The other three yurts are located at the main campground.
-
Hi everyone,
I am only 70% likely to be there, so feel free to drop me off the list. I am fine with camping, including primitive camping. We would be two with a two persons tent. On the topic of primitive camping, I am just back from 4 days of dispersed camping near Bishop, CA and I had a really good time. Great views, no neighbors, and zero housing costs. What else could you possibly wish for? Yeah, showers are nice, but I'm fine skipping for a few days. It takes some getting used to before you accept that the army shovel is your washroom, but surprisingly enough it doesn't feel weird anymore after a while.

Agreed! I plan one or two camping trips a year for groups of 15-30 people and when your trying to snag popular spot like national/State parks the earlier you can book the better when needing multiple spots (and preferably close together spots at that). We typically discuss dates and options on the trip and book for the following year on our last day or right after since many places fill up the full year out.
I'll thrown my two cents in for accommodations.

Those Yurts do look pretty cool but my concern would be that 4 month booking window. If other places take reservations a year out and we wait/gamble on those and it doesn't work out then we are kind of screwed as by May 2018 everything else might be booked?

If a bunch of people are camping in RV'S/tents I would actually think the Yurts by the main campground would be better so the group would be closer together for hanging out/campfires etc. though I guess if people have bikes a mile is not a huge deal.
------------------------------------------------
I'm still only like 70/30 so not adding my name to the official list just yet, just wanted to give my 2 cents based on past group camping experiences :)
I would LOVE to drive out with all my camping stuff and Mountain bikes but it's just waaaaaay too far so my itinerary will be just flying/renting car and bringing my small backpacking stuff so I'm fine camping pretty much anywhere.

We are in the 80ish % likely camp, which means we will try to make it, unless something happens with my (not so healthy) parents, which would require me to leave the country again.
We do have an RV (32ft), but don't need hookups, just a space to fit 32 ft.
I don't want anyone to plan around us, as there is always that possibility that something may happen, but I definitely want to be on the list of people, who are quite serious about this.
We can always try to find a boondocking spot nearby if you guys decide to go to a tent only area etc.

I can certainly try when it gets closer, hard to say how many folks will have similar schedules but I'd be all for splitting car/gas costs!

I recall there is a shuttle between SLC and Moab. Once you are in Moab I'm sure someone can move you around during the meet up in their vehicle.

No idea what my % commitment is yet, but I'm noting the date and want to try to join. When I lived in Colorado I went to Moab for weekend trips to climb. That was in the early 2000's and we always camped free on BLM lands (Indian Creek mainly, but also Castle Valley. I brought my mountain bike with me once, but I was too focused on the climbing so this time around I would ride! I accidentally ended up there on Jeep Weekend, twice! That was unfortunate.
I recommend reading some Edward Abbey before going. "The Monkey Wrench Gang" is fun fiction and "Desert Solitaire" is a classic about the area. He was a ranger in the area and was quite a character (anarchist, environmentalist, curmudgeon, etc.).
Here's a morning shot from some free camping (circa 2000 point-and-shoot digital):

And a random shot from Canyonlands NP (hiking day since my climbing partner has some sort of shoulder injury):

I have some pretty good climbing pictures from the area, but they're all on slides I haven't scanned yet. Here's one digital shot that doesn't do it justice, but what the heck. This looking straight down on the Kor-Ingalls route on Castleton Tower:

My go to campground for a mixed group is:

I am going to try to call this place today and see what their availability is for October 2018.
I do agree that a place like this would be best to accommodate MMMers who may have limited time (and don't want to spend precious hours driving out to a remote BLM site) and who want some in-town amenities.
It could be that some of us who will have more leisurely schedules go from here to a BLM site after most folks have gone back to their 9-to-5s. ;-)

Most of the cool things to do in MOAB are not in the city of MOAB. There are campgrounds much closer to arches and canyonlands that are outside the city on BLM land. - including a bunch of great sites along the colorado river. - If getting everyone in one place is the goal i dont see that being a hard thing to do in October as the season should be really slow out there.
So IMO this site is more "remote" than the BLM land if your goal is to see the amazing National and state parks in the moab area.
-
.... i dont see that being a hard thing to do in October as the season should be really slow out there.
Oct is prime time in Moab...probably the busiest time of the year because the weather is so nice.

Sounds good 94. Thanks for getting this Meet Up rolling. There is no way to make a really diverse group of people perfectly happy, which is why I was trying to figure out who is actually highly likely to come so we weren't getting input from too many people. Choosing a central location with all the options from tents to RVs to hotels [nearby] means you'll be able to accommodate most people.
I'll be around before and possibly after the Meet Up to do more riding. If it's just me I'm happy to head out into the desert for some primitive camping. If my GF and some of our other urban friends are with us I may stick around the Cannyonlands RV Park to keep them happy. We can coordinate the pre and post Meet Up stuff closer to the time.
-
I think more central for a big inclusive meetup, then more remote before and/or after stuff makes a lot of sense! :)
-
If we end up at Canyonlands the one downside with that place other than not being free is that it's in town so it's noisy relative to a primitive campsite. So if you are a light sleeper bring ear plugs.
-
Señora aperture and I are looking forward to Moab with you guys. Where ever we can get it done is good for us. Agree October is peak season in Moab. BLM land may be unpredictably available and/or difficult to locate vs. a reserved private site. We live in Denver and can travel to Moab on a weekend, so the main draw for us is meeting others in the community and celebrate freedom (FIRE date is June, 2018).
An experience that is fantastic at Arches is the ranger-led Fiery Furnace Tour (https://www.nps.gov/arch/planyourvisit/programs.htm). Tickets often sell out on same day they go on sale (6 months prior to date) so you will need to plan. I highly recommend the experience. There are alerts about the experience, but I think the only people that might have trouble, would be folks with really bad knees and perhaps could be hard to carry a baby. There is some climbing ladders, squatting and crawling under things and probably more than a few big step ups. Nothing an otherwise healthy 5 to 70 year old couldn't handle.
Best wishes, aperture.
-
BLM land may be unpredictably available and/or difficult to locate vs. a reserved private site.
I don't think camping at a primitive dispersed BLM location with no services is a realistic option for a diverse group that doesn't know each other. Not everyone has the equipment, skills and ability to make that work and even if they do flying with it would be challenging for a number of reasons. Even for people I know I would be cautious about planning a trip around that type of camping option for most people. And as you note even finding such a location can be a challenge to meet up with the group.

DH and I have been chatting - we are in!
We will likely take a couple of weeks to drive down from BC and back, so will definitely be around to check out a few extra sights around the area. We will have our old Jeep, mountain bikes, paddleboard/kayaks, hiking shoes etc and will be up for about anything!

This meetup sounds very interesting. I'm afraid to commit because I am not in the 90% camp, but I love the parks in Utah and have wanted to go to Arches and Canyonlands. So the only thing that would probably stop me would be having another trip planned.
I thought I'd be hiking the Camino de Santiago on my first year FIREd, but you MMMers keep planning cool trips in the US and this may delay my other plans. Oh well. It would be fun to hike in this area with you all.
If I go, I'd be flying in as well, so I can join in on a car rental. I see I'd probably fly in to Las Vegas or Salt Lake City.
I'd also probably prefer the Yurt idea as I don't want to fly in with a tent and all of that, but flexible on that. At $120 for 6 people, I can handle the $20/night in the Yurt.
If I do go, I'd want to turn this into a longer trip for sure.

We need an MMM Camino hike... no obligation on hiking together (hike your own hike), but just lots of us starting within a few days +/- of each other, so we're metting up and hanging out and walking together on bits along the way.
:D

Perhaps. But it doesn't look like the Camino is in the cards for me for 2018, at this rate. ¡Joder!
The year I do the Camino I'd want to end it with a visit to the Celtic music festival at Ortigueira, which I think is usually in July.

There's a puddle-jumper from Denver to Grand Junction, which is only about 90 miles from Moab. You could - might want 2 or 3 others to split the costs - have Redtail Aviation give you a scenic flight over the Canyonlands starting in Junction and set you out at Moab airport. From there you can arrange from one of many shuttles into town. The only Mustachian I ever met (briefly) was Mr Moneymustache (at the nissan dealership in Boulder) so it's hard to predict reactions from mustachians, but I never heard anyone else say, "Aw, dammit, that flight over the Uncompahgre Plateau, over Westwater Canyon, along the Book Cliffs, over Yellowcat and Arches, looking over at the La Sal mountains, down past Deadhorse Point to the Confluence in the heart of Canyonlands, then back up to the Airport, I hated it. Totally not worth the money."
It's an option.
-
After playing phone tag for a few days, I finally talked to a human at the Canyonlands campground in Moab (https://highwaywestvacations.com/properties/canyonlands).
I also looked at Moab's calendar of events and noticed that the Jeep Jamboree will occur on October 25 - 27. We want to be sure to MISS that madness!!
I got some price estimates. A tent site, which can accommodate 2 4-person tents (and up to 6 people total) runs $70 per night. Tent sites are only for tents. Sites for campers and RVs are in a separate area--about 50 yards away (minimum).
I was told that prices will increase as our date nears, so it would behoove us to start really trying to figure out what we want to do. I think at this point, if we like the looks of this place, I should go ahead and reserve several sites that are next to each other. Maybe 4 - 6 tent sites plus 3 - 4 RV sites. Looks like they have a pretty reasonable cancellation policy.
Are we set on the weekend of October 20th? Should I assume that most people will arrive Thursday evening and leave Monday? Ish? And that others might be able to hang around later--maybe on BLM land or at other campsites outside of Moab?
At some point soon, I'll just need to go for it and make some reservations, but the more input, the better...I think. :)
Woo hoo--getting excited about this!! :)
-
As long as you can cancel I think booking a few sites is a smart move. Then I'd start asking people for money to confirm their spots. Nothing makes it clear who is really coming to an event like a non-refundable deposit. ;)
I expect I will be in Moab before and after the event. Not sure what my plan is at this point for camping as it will depend who is coming down with me from home.
-
BLM land may be unpredictably available and/or difficult to locate vs. a reserved private site.
Agreed, I've done primitive camping via car and backpacking but flying/renting car adds another element. Plus tougher with a group as you say and people arriving/departing via different schedules and stuff.
I think having a spot nailed down and reserved well in advance will be best.
Is there anything particular you like better about the highwaywest canyonlands resort more then the other in town options like the KOA, slickrock, etc?
I've never been so no preference, just curious.

You could book a few sites, I don't know that you need to book all of them? Inevitably you'll get people coming early, staying late, staying a whole week, some tent, some RV, etc. so getting 8-10 sites of various lengths with some people sharing a site and everything could get convoluted quickly.
What we have done in the past for group camping trips is email out dates, book sites and just announce "hey I'm site 84" and next guy I got 85, and so on. Then we try and get our group close by even if not directly adjoining. That may be a little less work for you Ninetyfour; or like I said a combination where you book some and some folks book their own nearby
If you go with Canyon lands it looks like it's not very big so it would be easy enough to walk over to others sites. It would be cool to get a few together in a somewhat secluded spot though for late night campfires chats without disturbing non meetup campers.
As for date I don't know that we are set on the 20th but that weekend works for me. I'm getting excited as well!!

I've stayed at Canyonlands several times so I know its ups and downs well. The benefits are largely its location that's walkable to many amenities including the local brew pub, bike shops, grocery stores and restaurants/hotels. The cons are that it's a RV park and it's in the middle of town so it's not a quiet remote campsite. Given all the different types of people that could attend I think it offers a ton of flexibility in terms of meeting a variety of expectations.
I don't care if we stay somewhere else. I'm fine with 94's first idea for a group campsite with pit toilets or any of the other options that have been discussed that let us reserve spots in advance.

Walkables cool with me!
I'm fine wherever too.

Thanks for doing the legwork on this 94. I wonder if we could designate a group of sites that are close to each other, then have people individually pay for those sites so that no one is on the hook for collecting $s. Hotels hosting wedding parties will often do this and it works pretty well.

Good suggestion. When I did my last MTB group trip to Moab. I booked a tent site and then asked Canyonlands to hold 4 or sites on both sides of my site for a couple weeks. Then told my friends to book those sites within the next 2 weeks. That worked fine and I didn't have to deal with any site besides my own.
The only hang up is they'll only hold sites for a limited time so people would need to make a move fairly quickly.
-
OK--more progress to report.
I called today and have reserved 4 adjacent tent sites and 4 adjacent RV sites. I had to pay a $67 deposit to hold a site for myself. My site can accommodate one other tent and up to 5 other people. The other 4 tent sites and 4 RV sites will be held for one month (until Dec 21).
If you want to reserve a site, please call 800-644-9113 and put a deposit down. You can refer to the SMITH (just some random made up name) group.
I said that I will arrive on Thursday, October 18 and will depart on Monday, October 22.
They cannot accommodate 5th wheels that are longer than 32 feet or RVs that are longer than 38 feet.
Remember that, according to their website, they have quite a flexible cancellation policy.
Oh, and I just noticed that they also have small cabins! (Maybe RC said this upthread and I had forgotten).

I like SMITH .... Agent Smith I hope :) lol
I just need a piece of dirt or space to sleep in my hatchback
So the limit is two tents per pad? Was it the deluxe or primitive tent
So if max two tents and one person in each tent I get a cost of $46 dollars a night for deluxe. So I could assume $23 split

Yes, apparently two tents is the limit and 6 people per site is the limit. I believe these tent sites are equipped with water only (not electric). I think the deluxe tent sites have electric.
-
Tried calling to book, but they seem to be busy. I'll try again later.
-
They might have just closed the office for the day, as it is 5pm here (there).
And they might close early tomorrow, because of Thanksgiving.
But they do return phone calls, if you leave a message.
-
The cabins go for about $80 a night and fit 4. Well they say 6 because the bottom bunks are full size beds.
Are those yurts close by? I think they were $200 a night and sleep 6, and have kitchens.
-
Woohoo!! Thanks for organizing 94 and for everyone's input.
I went ahead and booked one of the SMITH tent sites for the 4 nights. Should be a great time :)

Well if you don't make this one Stasher I'd just give up on desert MTB trips. Once you are 0 for 3 it's clear that it's not meant to be. ;)

No, We were supposed to do a spring desert trip before the fall one. That's 0 for 2. You went to Cali weeks before the desert trip. There was no overlap and you are retired remember?. All the time in the world. *fingers crossed* for Oct 2018 in Moab. ;)

hahaha oh man the pressure is on :)
I'll bring a clone to make up for the other time and hopefully dump another commitment before then too

I'm excited. Let's do this! :)
-
Just booked a tent site. I booked for 4 people at the site ($5 extra per person over two). PM me if you are interested in sharing the campsite (camp site will comfortably hold two 2-person tents, after that it is a squeeze per Kendra at the office).
Thanks, aperture.

Dang you people beat me to it. I finally got through and booked the last tent site that was being held for "Smith". Whew!
-
Remember that I can easily share my site with a tent or two, as I will be I my truck/camper.
This is starting to look like a party!!! :)

I may have room to share as well, but I won't know until I see if any MTB folks from Victoria will be with me.
I've organized a lot of trips and I typically get 20%-30% cancellation of people that say they are coming.

FWIW - there are tons more tent sites at Cantonlands still open for Oct 2018. You might have to walk 5mins to join us.
94 can you post what site numbers you asked them to book? That way if folks need to grab one elsewhere they can look at the campground map and figure out the logistics.

I left them a message yesterday - but haven't heard anything back. I guess I should try following up today.
ETA - Just called and booked. The SMITH group tent sites are all in Row 8.
Deposit is one night - cancellation policy is great: full refund with 3 days notice, forfeiture of deposit if less than 3 days.
** Also, I had no luck with the 1-800 number from Canada - I had to call them direct at 435-259-6848. Not sure if anyone else has run into this! **

I just called and Kendra said that we have sites 110, 111, 112, and 113 in row 8.
If you go to the website and click on Map & Directions, you can click on Download Sitemap to see the layout of the property.

Just snooped on Google Maps, looks like a killer location
The spots look good too NinetyFour
McDonalds across the street for wifi and ice cream ( I think I sat here for 3 hours on my last trip uploading photos lol )
Bike shop across the street
Moab Brewery across the street for RetireCanada ;)

The campground has wifi. The central walkable location is one of its strong points. There is a brew pub a frisbee throw from where we are staying as well. That's not an accident. ;)

You are right. They just have water. I'm typically in the "G" section and we've poached power from empty deluxe sites. It seemed like that was row 8 as well, but I trust the legend more than my memory. ;)
I thought there was just the primitive tent sites and deluxe. I didn't realize they had a 3rd category.

If the Smith ones are all taken, can we add more to the Smith group?
How far are the RV spots?
-
How far are the RV spots?
The walk from Row 8 to any of the RV rows [1-6] is from 15 seconds - 3 mins. They like you to walk around and not cut through sites.
-
For those that have not (fully) committed yet and are flying in, can we just bring a sleeping bag and sneak into someone's tent?
It's either that or the yurts or cabins for me.
-

I can certainly call again and ask to reserve more spots to be held until December 21. I wonder if we should reserve a few at the end of Row 7 (104, 105, 106). That way, we would "control" the noise level in that area. Although, who knows, maybe our group will be rowdier than anyone else!
Rebel, Kendra said that the RV sites are at the end of Row 3. I assume she means the "top" end, if you look at the map. So they are 4 rows over. :(
-

If people are not maxed out with number of tents or people and want to share then yes. But it's not like you can "hide" an extra tent if all the MMM sites are full.

Daisy--I will be sleeping in my truck/camper. I can also bring my tent (and rain fly), which you are welcome to use at my site. It's a 2 person tent, so it should be plenty big for you. Sound good?

I'm waiting to get some word from my MTB people about our Oct 2018 trip. I may switch my site to row G as I don't want to pay the extra $$ for a water site for the week+ I'll be there and I don't want to move my tent either. If I do that I'll ask Kenda to hold it for "Smith" and I will post the site availability on this thread.

Sure, that is very generous of you.
Now I just need to decide if I am going. I am over 50% committed, but have to see what else I have going on in 2018. Although what could be better than going to Canyonlands with a bunch of my new Internet, outdoorsy friends? I can't think of much...

Just so you aren't disappointed we are staying at Canyonlands RV Park in the middle of Moab. It's really got nothing to do with Canyonlands National Park - although you can drive from one to the other in ~45mins.

OK, thanks.
I'd probably turn it into a longer vacation anyways, so I'd go check it out.
I love the west/southwest US...so I am sure it will be wonderful.

It will be awesome!!
And, if you can either arrive early or stay later, I may be interested in sharing a yurt with you if we can find one in the area, if you'd be up for that. Unless you want the solo yurt experience! :)

I think you should. Either control the noise, or contain it. But be close together either way. ;)

OK--done. Kendra has reserved the "top" 4 sites in Row 7 for us (103 - 106). She will hold them until December 21, just like the others. These sites have water and electricity, so they are a little more expensive. Please call the RV place directly to snag one of these sites, if you'd like one.

I called to book an RV site, no answer, left a voicemail.
I did it between when I posted that and when you called. Weird that you got through and I didn't. They must like you. :)
-
Maybe she was busy talking with another MMM person! :)
They have been good returning calls, so I'm glad you left a voicemail.
-
Booked!
Tent site. Row 7.
Mind you, at this point, my probability still stands at 60% for attending.
I hope to have a clearer picture of my attendance by March 2018.
If I can't go, I will definitely post here to let others know that the site is available.
Once I confirm my attendance, I would also be willing to share my site with one other tenter.
Besides, I may need to defer some the costs of this pricey* campground. :)
(Also, I may charge Row 8 people if they want to run an extension cord to my site. LOL.)
*I need to remind myself that this is the cost of a city campground. I was quoted $219.50 for the four nights ($54.88 per night), by Kendra. At least this is better than the $70 per night that I thought was mentioned up thread.
In the meantime, I'm very excited for the chance to go back to Moab, Utah.
But more importantly, I'm excited to hang out with like-minded MMM folk like yourself.
I've booked the same dates as NinetyFour stated above. Checking in on Thurs Oct 18th and checking out on the morning of Mon Oct 22nd.
I will probably head outside of Moab for some camping/hiking/biking on the dates before and/or after these MMM dates.

I booked an RV site :-) I've never, ever, ever spent this much to park my RV before (gulp) but I'm excited to come and meet some MMM followers.
I may be by myself or may have 2 teenagers with me. They will be a lot more interested in hanging out at the pool than with MMMers. Having access to a pool is quite a bit above our usual facilities available so they will likely be excited to come with me. These details will work themselves out much closer to go time.
I'll bring my mountain bike so let's plan some rides :-)
Thanks for organizing 94. If you find yourself over near Zion or in SW Utah before Oct '18 PM me and we can visit!
-
PA I'll be in Moab 14 - 26 Oct 2018. If you feel like coming early and/or staying late to ride that would be fun.

I have never been to Zion or Bryce! I bet May (right after I retire) would be a perfect time to head that way. If I do so, I'll be sure to let you know!
-
Haha, plugging away, I thought the same thing ;) But booked anyways!! Because I think, it's worth it, ya know!
RV sites are $69 and they will give you the Good Sams discount if your account is in good standing by the time you get to the RV park
so that's an extra 10% off!
We will probably hang on BLM land before and/or after those four days.
We booked our site, so we can join the Smith party.
Kendra called me back this am (I had left a message Wednesday around noon).
Here's a bit more info:
Smith party RV sites are in row 3, Smith party tent sites are in row 8
There are no basic RV sites without hookups for larger rigs (ours is 32 ft).
I tried to get a site with no services, but it seems they only allow that for smaller rigs.
If people are trying to share RV's an extra person on a RV site is only $5
They take a deposit of the first night
You can cancel up to three days prior and get your deposit back. If you cancel later, you'll forfeit your deposit.
As I said many times, we are planning to be there definitely once we commit. So we are not trying to just block a site.
We will actually REALLY try to make this.
But if something unforeseen happens with my folks and I'll have to leave the country, we may have to give up our spot.

Awesome! We should stay in touch, in case we happen to be out that way at the same time. I didn't realize you are retiring so soon!
-
PA I'll be in Moab 14 - 26 Oct 2018. If you feel like coming early and/or staying late to ride that would be fun.
I would love to and will come early and stay late when I have fired. Not there yet. Right now I have to make sure these teenagers get to school M - F!

I wrote all about it on my trip there after I stopped at Canyonlands and Arches NP last time. Check it all out on my website and I tracked all my costs to be a total MMM practitioner lol.

I keep playing phone tag with their office. Messages left on both sides.

I know right! This thing took off this weekend, like 8-9 sites booked already in ~4 days
Gonna be fun :)

I left voice mail to try and book an RV site. Waiting to hear back.

How far are the RV spots?
Rebel, Kendra said that the RV sites are at the end of Row 3. I assume she means the "top" end, if you look at the map. So they are 4 rows over. :(
The RV sites that are booked as part of the SMITH group are in Row 3 because they are premium RV sites (accommodate larger rigs, and have full hookups).
If you are under a certain length (it was perhaps 25 ft?) and don't need sewage for the four days (there is a dump station at the campground) you can book a basic RV site in row six. There was availability there when I called. It would be closer to the tent sites in the group, and the same row as the cabins if anyone is taking those.

I believe it was even up to 30 ft IIRC, because I tried to get one and we just missed it by not very much (ours is 32 ft).
Those smaller ones are like $57 or so a day, but call to double check.
Also, we have a bunch of extra stuff that we'll happily share, as we'll be in the RV. We for sure have an extra tent and a sleeping bag, if that helps anyone.
So those of you flying in, if in doubt whether or not to bring a certain item, fell free to check with us if you can borrow from us for those few days.
-
Well, I'm going. Sitting at 99% certainty, and have arrangements for a tent site (sharing with avrex, and taking over if he can't make it). MXT will most likely come too. We'll be tent camping. I am totally bringing our bikes, and this coming year is all about getting MXT comfortable on single track.

Such an Awesome List !
I'm bringing my Hiking and MTB gear, ready for a great time. I plan on staying longer and hope to hit Arizona for some riding and then loop back up through California maybe.
-
I might as well sign up as definite. Thanks for the offer 94!
I will most likely fly in, unless I get a new-to-me car by then and maybe take a wild road trip out there.
I will plan a longer trip around then regardless of how I get there and see several parks while out there.

Clarification: Thread title says 18th, the post I quoted says the 19th. Which is it? I didn't mention dates, just the group name and she knew which one.
EDIT: I just told Ali the roster of this so far. We've met 9 of the other 13 people/couples (four of them multiple times), and all are great people! We are so pumped to go to this, and meet the new people and see friends again. And have our friends meet each other!
Everyone should totally be signing up for this!
Even if you're a maybe, you should sign up and put down the deposit, since it's 100% refundable until three days before. Sign up now and put down ~$60 and you get it all back if you have to cancel. But don't cancel. Come!!

The confirmation sent to my email is for Oct 18-22, so 4 nights. I did mention the Smith group and dates when booking. I just went off the title and didn't even notice the list was different.

Wouldn't it be awesome if 1/3 - 1/2 of the entire campground that weekend was full of MMMers!?
I think I mentioned that I would be arriving on the 18th (Thurs) and departing on the 22nd (Mon), but that not everyone would be able to spend that much time there. The sites I reserved are for all four of those nights. Not sure if that clarifies your question about dates or not...

I don't know. I kind of like the idea of avrex and I holding a monopoly on that row. :) This is going to be so much fun!!! And I get to drive. It's only 6(ish) hours away from me!
-
It's only 6(ish) hours away from me!
Really?
Sounds like we may be headed to your place before or after. :P
-
This is going to be so much fun!!!
Heck yeah, this thing is growing like crazy! I get excited every time this thread pops up even though it's like 10 months away!
It's only 6(ish) hours away from me!
Nice!! I have a 1/2 drive to airport, 4ish hour flight, then 4 hour drive from SLC to Moab...
Which brings me to my next point..to the recent date discussion it originally was listed as 19-22 (Friday to Monday) but 94 said she was booked 18-22 (Thursday to Monday) so I just did the same knowing I may only do 3 nights depending on flight cost/availability. But it seems like most folks are staying all four? So I may just do the same, certainly more bang for my buck travel time wise.
Typically only do 3 nights away from wife/kids but seems like it's worth an exception :)
Also just checked my email and there is no number listed, just says Smith group. So I'm assuming my site is between 108 and 113 but not sure how that was figured out, or I guess 94 knew which ones she requested maybe. Does everyone else' email give them an exact Site #?
-

Oh...7 hours.

You know...avrex did all that. I should ask him to forward me the email. :) I have it in my calendar, and that's all I need.

Good question, I was wondering how everyone got site numbers also. I asked when booking and was told she was not assigning us a site but we would be at the top of row 3.
Email just says this
Arriving: 18 Oct 2018 Adults: 2 Site Type: CAN Premium PT FHU 50AMP
Departing: 22 Oct 2018 Vehicles: 0 Group Name: Smith Group

Row six also has cabins to fill up! For anyone who doesn't want to tent or RV:
"The cabins have two sets of bunk beds that have a double on the bottom and a twin on the top. With the exception of our handicap cabin that has 3 twins and only one double. Our cabins also have A/C, heater, mini refrigerator, T.V., picnic table, and fire pit. The restrooms and showers are two rows away. "
I asked for a site next to CanuckExpat, so I was told a specific number.
That's funny, you made me check my email, and we don't have a site number in the email. Didn't think about it until this conversation. But good to know we probably have one
-

Yep, my bad. In my quoted post, I should have put Oct 18.
My reservation is for arrival Thur Oct 18, leaving on the morning of Mon Oct 22.
It also shows "Smith Group" even though I asked for a specific site in row 7. It doesn't matter. This will be fun.

I just change my reservation to Row G as I am staying longer than the event and I like those sites better so I figured I would save myself the hassle of moving camp. It's a 30 sec walk from the "Smith Group" tents in Row 8 to the "Outer Reaches" in Row G.
I asked them to leave my Row 8 site held for the Smith Group if anyone wants it.

Sweet! Looking forward to seeing you, neighbor! :)

What's the actual cost per day for these things, anyways? I just booked and they charged a $61.something deposit, but I realized I have no idea what the cost per night is. We probably will want to stay longer, and if this place books up, I might just want to book a few extra days on the front or back end now, before those days sell out (even if that's 5 months from now or whatever). Could cancel those days later anyways, I suppose and get a refund.
Also I never got a emailed receipt as promised. Did anyone else not get one? Maybe they typo'd my email when recording it?
-
Deposit is one night. So what ever they charged you is the nightly cost for your site.
I got two emailed receipts (saying same thing but with different names)

Is this mostly a hiking or mountain biking adventure? Or both?
I am a cyclist, but haven't done much mountain biking. But I can train for it beforehand. I am actually excited to possibly try some "real" mountain biking, being from flatland Florida and all. We do have some mountain biking trails around here. I have mostly done the easy inter-trail rock filled roads between the real trails on my hybrid bike, and have also gone riding on a beach path with hard packed sand (interspersed with some soft patches so requires some skill there) also on my hybrid bike.
Is there any paddling (canoeing/kayaking) around there as well?
Although the best part of this trip is to celebrate 94's retirement and hang out with cool (current and future) FIREees.
-

Yes to all of the above. You can bike, hike and paddle in the Moab area.

I'll be there with friends from 13-22 Oct 2018. I may or may not stay 23-26 Oct 2018 as well.

A couple weeks at a time and 4 visits wouldn't scratch the surface. I've been going for 25yrs. Love the place. I just bike. Haven't even gotten around to paddling or hiking.

So we should just stay the entire month of October or something? :)
I'm tempted to book extra random nights that month, but with a gap in between. So we can boondock, then go there and dump/fill up and stay for a bit, then boondock, then go back, etc.
Mix staying there every little bit for a night (plus the 4 MMM nights) with mostly boondocking in the nearby area.

I searched for hostels in the Moab area to supplement the days I am not with the group camping and found this hostel. It had good reviews on Trip Advisor and Yelp.
The dorm rooms and private rooms are very cheap.
They also have houses that can house 10-20 people. It looks like an interesting alternative.
Does anyone have any experience with this hostel?

-
I do not have experience with it, but there's a good chance I will be in Moab in the next few months, and could drop in and check it out, if that would help.
-

I had a friend stay there. There general vibe I got from his feedback was that it was cheap and okay, but on the rundown side of what you might expect from a hostel.

Great!

The only time I was ever in Moab was when I was camping there in early Sept, a few years back. We normally do car/tent camping. However, for that trip, we were in a rented RV. (We don't normally rent RVs, but I found a sweet $1 RV repositioning deal that I couldn't refuse.)
Even though we were in an RV, as I recall, the night time temperatures in Moab were perfect for tent camping.
Well, I just looked it up, and I'll admit it....I didn't realize how cold the nights in Moab will be, at the time of year of our MMM meetup.
The average low (https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/moab-ut/84532/month/336126?monyr=10/01/2018) is not much above freezing.
37 F / 3 C
My eventual plan is to buy a RV/travel trailer for road trips when both my wife and I are retired.
I do enjoy tent camping and I don't think I want to accelerate my RV/travel trailer purchase plans just yet.
So, it looks like I'll need to purchase some type of heater for my tent. Brrr.
-
HEATER in a TENT? It is called a sleeping bag.

Brrr.
You can get a personal space heater for pretty cheap https://www.walmart.com/ip/Soleil-Personal-Electric-Ceramic-Heater-250-Watt-MH-01-Black/54562671?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&wl13=3762&adid=22222222227052822078&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=151777312295&wl4=pla-263800053309&wl5=1016103&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=54562671&wl13=3762&veh=sem (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Soleil-Personal-Electric-Ceramic-Heater-250-Watt-MH-01-Black/54562671?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&wl13=3762&adid=22222222227052822078&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=151777312295&wl4=pla-263800053309&wl5=1016103&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=54562671&wl13=3762&veh=sem)
You would just need a small battery pack you can plug into to and place it somewhere you can reach from your bag so you can tun on before you get out of the bed to remove the chill.

Ok we're in. I've left a message at the resort to make a reservation but they seem to be working really slow this time of year (can't say I blame them). Ideally I'm aiming for RV site 74-76 as we have a small rig and don't need a sewer hookup. I'll update the big list when I get confirmation. Unfortunately my wife can only get one day off work so we'll be arriving Thursday and need to leave Sunday afternoon to drive back to Denver.
I'd love to organize (note: not "guide" as liability is a funny thing) a group adventure if people were interested. A couple ideas for unique things I'm qualified for:
1) Canyoneering, maybe this one: https://www.roadtripryan.com/go/t/utah/moab/uturn http://climb-utah.com/Moab/uturn.htm ? Think of it as a short but very steep 2 mile hike in Arches National Park away from all the people where you get to do a couple easy bolted rappels. Not at all recommended for those with a fear of heights. There are a ton of beginner friendly canyons in the Moab area, some I've done and some I haven't. I have all the ropes and hard gear for the rappelling, and I have the webbing for 2 extra harnesses but beyond that you'd need to bring your own harness and helmet. If other people had experience and wanted to do something more challenging I'd love to do that too!
2) Rafting. Whitewater is my big sport and I've guided rafts for years. There is a Class I/II river with one class III rapid called the Fisher Towers section just upstream of Moab on the Colorado: https://www.canyonvoyages.com/fisher-towers-day/ I've never run it before but it's a very family friendly stretch (they say good for 4+ years old). The one problem is it could be fairly cold that time of year. We can rent a paddle raft and bring our own food for about $25-30/person for a full day adventure that I could steer vs. about $60-$80pp if you went with one of the local outfitters.

I'm down and will bring all my gear, I have a second harness , atc and helmet as well as ropes. This is right up my alley and how cool that the routes are bolted.
-
My little brother just bought a chunk of camping gear, and in it, there was a harness and shoes. Haven't done anything more than bouldering, but it might be an option.
-
I will be up for rock climbing for sure and more than happy to setup top-ropes for people who have little or no experience with the sport, provided that they at least have harnesses, shoes, and helmets.
-
I'm in! I called and booked campsite 113.
I am an avid mountain biker and have been to the area many times. Excited to connect with everyone!

Those both sound awesome. Do we have to pick only one? :)

I just booked a cabin (I think I'm the first one in a cabin?!) online - 18th-22nd. If I am still in Colorado, I (or me and SO) will probably drive over the mountain with some gear... if I'm not in CO (which is quite possible), I will likely come along solo, and go the more expensive route of flying into SLC and renting a car.
I've lived ~6-7 hours from Moab my entire life, visited the area as a young kid, and driven through it as an adult, but never really checked it out, and I am super excited to combine the awesome surroundings with a weekend of old and new mustachian friends.
I have never done any canyoneering, rafting, or mountain biking, but I am definitely interested in hiking and walking in the parks, if not more adventurous new things as well.
-
@kudy I'll be heading north to I70, since it seems faster. If you do wind up driving, feel free to let me know if you want to caravan.
-
This sounds like fun. Never been to a meetup. Good excuse to get out to one of my favorite places.
-
I'm disappointed to say I just cancelled my reservation and will not be coming to Moab for the meet up. State finals of my kids sports team was announced for that same weekend in my home town and I'm a team coach. Poor timing. Hopefully I can meet up another time with MMMers.
-
I'm interested in this - do you know if we can do extra vehicles in one reserved spot? i.e. could I add onto someone's reservation and I pay a portion of the fee? I have a Transit Connect, size of a mini van, and I sleep in this. It's a bit ridiculous to pay $44 a night + tax for just myself.
-
Hey 94, I may be bringing a tent after all on this trip. I'm still reserved for your site, right?
-
PTF. Since it looks like I'm staying in Cali for awhile and only doing short trips sans Barkinator I'm hoping I can make this too. Also have a mini van but still too far out to make plans but will likely come with BF.
ETA just tried link but didn't work. Prob my phone as it seems to be messed up.
That would be awesome.
I'm sure I'm not alone in these thoughts.

Let me know if you want to share a spot. I need to be down in LA on Sept 17th and was planning on slowly making my way across the SW to moab. Will need to head back home pretty quick after Moab (assuming I still have a job at that point - it's day to day right now.).
-
That will be awesome if you can make it @spartana :)

I'm officially registered for one of the tent sites - Row 7, I think.... waiting for confirmation email.
-
Well I tried to make a reservation, and we are too big for the park. :-( But that doesn't mean we can't be thereat a different park.
We'll stay in touch with this group so we can link up while we're travelling

Hey, Moab is approaching!
I may arrive in Utah a week earlier and would be up for meeting up with people and seeing some of the other parks in the area.

Looking forward to seeing you, Daisy. I will most likely get out to the Moab area early, as well, since I live relatively close by.
I hope everyone else still plans to attend and is looking forward to hiking, or biking, or relaxing, or all of the above!!
-
I'll be in the campground from 13 - 22 Oct 2018. I'll be mountain biking each day probably 10am-4pm or so, but I'll be around in the morning to chat over a coffee and in the evening to chat over a beer/campfire. I'll be staying around for the week after the event to keep riding. At the moment not sure where I will stay...probably someplace cheaper as I may be solo.
-
I will have to giver to get back up to Canada as I have a freelance photography gig that I just committed too on October 26th. So far the trip is still looking bang on for me to attend and enjoy.
-
Changed my identity, but still on for this, assuming @avrex and I are still sharing a spot.

Hi @J_Oden. Yep, we're still on. My plan is still to attend. However....
Mind you, at this point, my probability still stands at 60% for attending.
If I can't go, I will definitely post here to let others know that the site is available.
...I may not be able to get the time off of work to go on this trip.
Plus, my vehicle A/C also died. We'll see.
I'll have a clearer picture of my status when you see me at CM*TO.
Row 7 (Tent Sites 103-106)
avrex & J_Oden
Either way, if I can't attend, the site is yours. :)

AC is not important for Moab in Oct. Time off work is. Good luck making that happen. Tell them it's a family reunion...your money family. ;)

Love it. Thanks R-C. :)

Still planning to attend and share a campsite with @Stasher Most likely will end up Crashing in SLC Sunday the 21st since my flight Monday morning is really early. But will be around Moab/Campground Thursday afternoon through Sunday dinner time or so.
Really looking forward to it. Seemed like such a long shot to make it happen way back when this thread started and now it's only about 2 months from being a reality!!
So I'll post to follow, been dreaming of Mountain biking in Moab for over 20 years.
Of course as others have mentioned, no idea what 2 years will bring.

Cool. Sounds like we should get a run in on The Whole Enchilada. That's a pretty mind blowing ride if you haven't done it before. You shuttle up so the climbing is limited. Let's ride Capt Ahab and see how that goes....we can make plans from there.
-
I took MXT out to Red Rocks Canyon Open Space (https://redrockcanyonopenspace.org/) to start getting her more comfortable with trails, and to wipe the rust off of my skills (it's been more than a decade since I've done a dedicated single track ride, and more than 2 years since I've even ridden on a trail like this). This was an easy trail, but it was good to get back to it. Made this video on one run. (https://youtu.be/8EHGYy0rI6s)

Bummer :(
----
Anyone else thinking of renting Mountain bikes I just called this place yesterday-
https://chilebikes.com/rentals/
They seemed friendly on the phone and they are right across the street from the campground. They said they pretty much rent out every bike they have for October weekends so they recommend booking soon if you want something.
~65 days out baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@CheapskateWife
What is too big for the park? The premium sites should be 45 ft, at least that's what I was informed when I called. We're taking a 40 ft Class A and a tow vehicle.

Well this is just sad...

Hey all,
I will be in Seattle prior to going to Moab and work my way to Moab. I arrive in Seattle on October 6th and would like to spend a few days there. After that, I am free to do whatever to get to Moab. I would rather not rent a car. I can take the Amtrak train to Green River, UT or Grand Junction, CO.
After the Moab meetup, I can take the train again from Green River, UT or Grand Junction, CO (or some other place), to Denver and fly back home.
OR, I can ride with someone who lives close to a big city airport to fly back home.
Anyone have ideas for me or space in their car or something else to help me plan?
I'm trying to finalize the details.
-
I am getting a bit excited about this meetup. It's tempered a bit since CM*TO will happen first, but a camping trip just appeals to me. Anyway, this morning I made some hash browns, which got me thinking about camp breakfast. One of my go to meals is shredded potatoes with shredded onion, eggs, and corned beef hash. Usually seasoned with a bit of garlic and pepper. I love that I can bring a bunch in a freezer bag. Amazing. There is a better than average chance I will bring this dish. What about you all? What are your plans for food?
-
What about you all? What are your plans for food?
Plans? Walk to the grocery store near the campground and grab whatever I'm feeling at the time. I know what I'll be drinking...tea for breakfast, diluted sports drink during the day riding my bike and beer in the late afternoon/evening when I am back at camp.
-
I'm late to the party but looking forward to joining you all in Moab. Just called Canyonlands RV park to reserve a spot for me & my trusty truck camper.
I would be up for some non-gnarly mountain biking but need to rent a mountain bike.

The Chillipepper Bike Shop and the Moab Cyclery are next to the campground and offer rentals. I've had a bunch of good experiences with Moab Cyclery.
10 yrs ago I would have said you are out of luck for chill singletrack riding in Moab, but they have since built several amazing trail networks with green and blue trails that are fun.

That's what I hear - lots of less intimidating rides now. Looking forward to checking them out!

When you are in Moab if you need any suggestions for where to ride drop by my camp. I'll also have tools and supplies in case you need to tweak/adjust anything.

We are still planning to be at the Campground Oct 18-22 and hope to snag a spot on BLM or NF land a few days before and after the meetup.
Once we know our spot on public land, I'll gladly post the coords here for others to join us if they are interested.
Also, I have an older no frills Mountain Bike, that someone could borrow if they like. I am not sure how suitable it will be for you tough trail riders.
That will be for you to judge, don't hold me accountable if it breaks apart and you get hurt ;)
I just use it to ride around campsites, while we are travelling, don't do any Mountain Bike trails in the true sense.
But if someone thinks they could use it, you are welcome to it.
Also, we'll have some extra gear as I have mentioned before (tent, therma rests etc.). So if you are travelling light and need something,
don't hesitate to ask. We'll gladly help out if we can.

Hi FrugalZony,
I might be showing up a few days earlier too. When do you expect to arrive in BLM land?
I will take you up on your offer to use the no frills mountain bike. I'm not a huge mountain biker, but a simple bike to do some easy trails would be a very nice offer from you.
I will PM you on the details of the days before.
-
I have avoided reading about this get together as I didn't think I'd go. However, it keeps being talked about and I have no reason not to show up. I will be in my car which is set up for sleeping and I have camping gear. Should I try to get a spot in the campground, or is it too late?

It's a big campground so if you want to come I'd call them. Ask for a tent site as it will be cheaper.
-
For those that are flying in--what airport, and how are you planning to get to the campsite?
Is there like a carpool going on?
RV is likely out for me, but flying in solo may be a possibility.
-
Online shows no availability at the campground. I'll wait till after the weekend to call, they may be in a better mood... Plan B isn't just show up. The Mazda is a wee thing and I sleep in it.

I debated between SLC and LAS but SLC is about 4 hours vs 6 from Vegas so I went that route. My plan is just renting a car.
No carpool coordinated as far as I know. Not a bad idea but seems maybe tough depending on flight days/times.

We'll be RVing to the meet up but there are United Express flights into Moab (CNY) Canyonlands Field.
-
@arebelspy , we'll be taking this route (https://goo.gl/maps/Rd2bDCKYZg22). While timing will probably be a touch more important, we are heading pretty close to DIA, so we can swing by there if you want to finish the road trip with us. :)
-
I just called and it would be over $200 for the weekend in a tent site. I may just show up and plan on camping in BLM dispersed camping. Since I'm self contained (somewhat) in my car I can be flexible.
EDITED TO ADD: I haven't read the entire thread, just the past 2 pages, but if anyone wants to let me share a site I am happy to kick in some money as well. I'm not looking for charity, but the entire $200 for a site is just a bit too rich for my budget. I will have a tent with me, but plan to sleep in the car.
-
I am flying into Denver and renting a car - but I am arriving a few days early to visit home. I plan to drive to Moab the morning of the 18th.
-
It's very likely that I am taking the train to Green River, Utah, arriving in the morning on October 13th. Supposedly it's just a train platform, and no building, so I am really hoping 94 picks me up at the station. ;-) I can move it to October 14th or 12th if needed. Please let me know soon so that I can book the train.
I will book some nights at the Lazy Lizard hostel as BLM tent camping is too hard core for me. BTW, the hostel offers $3 showers for those that want to use their shower facilities and are not guests. The hostel offers dorm beds, private rooms, cabins, and houses at very reasonable prices. I will probably get a dorm bed or private room unless others want to join in on a bigger area and save money.
That gives me 4 full days to explore before the big crowd shows up (October 14-17...I will be resting on October 13th after 45hrs of train rides).
PM me if you are going earlier and would like to meet up. The public transportation is not that great in the area so we can get together and plan hikes, rides, or paddles.
Edited to add: I saw there is an Enterprise Rent-A-Car across the street from the hostel which rents cars for $30 a day. I may be able to get around by renting a car if others are not in the area at the same time. The rental car office is not open on Saturday or Sunday though. I can probably try to find a cheaper rental car rate if I tried.
-
A train wreck just happened at work. I'm not going to be able to fix the problem between now and the Oct meet up so sadly I am not going to be there. Fuck! FIRE can't get here fast enough. :(

That totally sucks, RC. I know how much you were looking forward to the trip, and I'm sure the whole gang was eager to meet you and try to keep with you on the trails. Serious bummer. :( Let's set the intention right now to make another Moab Meetup happen next year. :)

8am. But I've heard Amtrak may not always be on time. Would have to track and see when it is actually arriving. I've never taken an Amtrak train so I am not sure. And I'm not sure what kind of cell service I will have in Green River.

Just curious - did the RV park change ownership?
Link in the first post is dead - redirects to the general site of the park company, which no longer lists a UT location. Or am I missing it?
https://highwaywestvacations.com/properties/canyonlands
I'm considering going, but I've been to Moab a lot, and have lots of other travel plans through the fall and winter too...

Yes. Shouldn't have any effect on the end user.

Okay. Are you Clean Shaven or a Pencil Stache. I'm so very confused. :P

Awesome! When are you arriving?
-
Just reserved a dorm room for 18-22. I am set up to camp in my car, so I could come up earlier. I have a trip back East for later this month for 2 weeks. When I get back from that I'll start planning this one. I haven't been to this area for a few decades so I don't even know what I want to see/do yet.

I will stay at the hostel from the 13th to the 18th. Then from the 18th-22nd I am sharing a campsite with 94. Feel free to come earlier and explore!
I have never been to Moab so I want to spend some time there exploring the parks. Hike, bike, paddle...so much to do. 4 days will not be enough. ;-)
The guy at the hostel said some shuttle services can charge around $60 or $70 to take you around. Ridiculous! So if 94 or FrugalZony can't pick me up daily, I can rent a car for $30/day and meet up with them...unless you show up earlier. The guy also said other hostel stayers share rides all of the time.

@shadowmoss, there was only one private room left on the 13th (more available on the other dates). Plenty of dorm beds for the whole time.
I decided to reserve the private room. I'm waffling between private room and dorm bed. I wanted to make sure I didn't miss out on the private room if that's what I wanted.
Dorm bed: $12/night
Private room: $32/night (one person), $36/night (2 people)
It costs a little more, but not outrageous. Maybe we can share a room if you are interested.
-
Looks like you are checking out of the hostel the day i check in. :) Let me see how this first trip goes energy wise and money wise. It will be good for me to be staying someplace a bit away from the group. I need my down time. Maybe if I get there early I will stay in the room with you. Money will determine. I will know more around the beginning of October.

I may switch to a dorm bed if it's just me. $32 for a private room is not bad, but a $12 dorm bed is too enticing!

@Retire-Canada, I'm disappointed I won't be able to meet you & share your mountain biking wisdom. Bummer!
-
@arebelspy , we'll be taking this route (https://goo.gl/maps/Rd2bDCKYZg22). While timing will probably be a touch more important, we are heading pretty close to DIA, so we can swing by there if you want to finish the road trip with us. :)
Okay, I could probably fly in solo to Denver and road trip over! Texting you.
For everyone else: We have an RV campsite booked last Nov or whatever. I've gotta call and cancel at some point. Is there someone who wants it, that I can just keep it and you pay me back (or we time it so I cancel, and you call immediately and book)?
-
I'm in, but I am a wimp and will be staying in Moab. Any other wimps want to go in with me?

So sorry, but I’m out. I will be helping my oldest friend with her daughter’s (my goddaughter’s) wedding.

Let's set the intention right now to make another Moab Meetup happen next year. :)
Definitely! I still plan to take a month off for my 50th bday around 15 Mar to 15 Apr 2019 [I'll be heading south to UT/AZ] and an Oct 2019 desert trip is a great idea for Moab.
I'm not going to say much about these trips on the forums [until I am on the road!] because I feel like I jinxed myself with anticipation this year. So don't take my lack of posting as lack of interest. I'm interested AF!
-
Hi Everyone,
I will be driving by on the 16 or the 17 on my way to Boulder. Please let me know if you end up at the brewery or something on those days, I would like to join you!
I may be convinced to stay an extra night or two if some of you are up for doing some rock climbing (and have your equipment), but I have arrive in Boulder on the 19 at noon the very latest.
Rock on!
-
This is interesting. I am flying to Moab on the 20th to hike from Canyonlands Field to Moab on the Hayduke Trail. It would be interesting to meet some FIRE people at the group site instead. Is this event still on?
-
Given the number of cancellations, I figured I would hop on here and confirm that I and my husband will still be attending. Hard to believe this is not even a month away. Despite being on the road for 6 months this will be our first in an RV park. We have no set plans for after so if anyone wants to wander to BLM land after, we are game.

Yes--it is definitely still on!
This is where most of us will be: https://www.sunrvresorts.com/resorts/west/utah/canyonlands-rv-resort-campground/
Hope to see you there!

It's looking like I'll be getting to Moab early. Who's going to be camping Oct 14th - 18th? I'd love to camp together. I've got a truck camper, happy to boondock or stay in campground.

@Dr Kidstache
We will be leaving Montana and starting to head that way on Oct. 9th. Not sure how many days we will take to get there, depends on how nice the area is on the way there. Should definitely be there by the 16th but could be there as early as the 12th. We were hoping to boondock when we get there but aren't opposed to a campground. We are more limited in where we can camp with a 40 ft RV towing a car. It sounds like there will be multiple people showing up before the meet up. If someone who has been there before knows of a general area that could work for a few RVs and vehicles, post it. Or whoever gets there first can scout for an open area and post gps coordinates.
Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to Moab this year.
I've updated the campsite list below. J_Oden also won't be able to attend. Therefore, our site in Row 7 is available.
I have a very tentative plan for 2019 to be in this area on either the first week in Sept or the last week in Sept. We'll see what happens.
To everyone on this thread, enjoy your stay. What a beautiful part of the country this is.
I'll be checking this thread for any updates/photos of your time there.

As of now, we're still planning to be there. We'll be leaving from Boise ID around October 9th, and driving slowly to Moab via Salt Lake City (with stops at interesting hot springs and state parks along the way). If we get there early, we'll look up to see where everyone on is hanging out. Getting there early will depends on how long we stay at each spot on the way.
-
How did you guys get assigned campground spots? When I made a reservation, I was told they weren't assigned until arrival.
-
I haven't participated much in this discussion, but I am really excited about the meetup in a few weeks.
I am flying into Denver, spending a few days in Colorado, and then driving to Moab on the 18th. Because the meetup has been on my mind, I wrote a blog post about it, if you're interested in reading:
http://www.monetarymusings.com/1101/fi-friends-and-fun-in-the-utah-desert/
Is anyone coming or hoping to come but not sure where to stay? I booked a cabin that I believe has bunk beds if anyone wants to discuss splitting the place. I am also willing to give anyone a ride from the N. CO area to Moab on the 18th (and then probably back on the 22nd).
I am interested in an amateur/relaxed hike in Canyonlands & Arches (I am bringing my annual National Parks pass!), brewery visits, camp fires, helping people with website/internet questions, and touring the RVs of anyone who is willing to give one :)
-
AWe are still in. Still on track to get in a couple of days early. Will post about which BLM spot we'll end up at, once we scope it out.
Some of those around Moab are rough terrain, so I don't want to lead people to a place, I am not certain to get into ;)
I am currently dealing with a tooth abcess, which hopefully can hold off, until after Moab, although DH, is trying to convince me to skip Moab and head to Phoenix right away to see my dentist...
Also just hurt my ancle in King's Canyon/Sequoia NP, which hopefully will be better by the time we get to Moab, but I'll probably only be intersted in lazy easy hikes ;)
So Looking forward to this!!!
-
We had to cancel our reservation today. *tears*
My parents were going to come out and watch our kids so just DH and I could have a child-free vacation, but they now have to stay home and take care of my Grandma. She broke her hip and wrist a couple of weeks ago while on vacation, and has just been transferred back home.
I hope you all have such an amazing time that this becomes an annual gathering as we are really keen to join!
Hopefully see you next year,
TTM
PS - Happy happy retirement @NinetyFour! Will catch up with you next year!
-
Maybe it's contagious? Having work issues myself and need to cancel unfortunately.
@Stasher Let me know by next week if you want site or not. I can transfer to your name or cancel at a certain time and you can call to re-book right away.
Alternatively if one of these other folks have a site with room for one more tent maybe you can crash/split with them?

I am also staying at Canyonlands RV Resort, in a cabin, but I am not sure what number.
Does anyone know of any collaborative planning tools we could use for the group to put up "events" that they are doing/hosting, as a way to try and organize a few activities?
The simplest tool I can think of is a shared Google calendar (example: http://www.monetarymusings.com/moab/), but I believe each participant would have to be invited to it. I guess ideally it would allow anonymous collaboration without an invite?

I like the activities list, a less than 2 mile hike and then beers at the bar. I'm up for whatever. Some hikes, activities, and conversation sounds great to me.
We are going to start heading that way tomorrow morning. We could be in the area as early as Thursday the 11th. If we get there early I will post where we're at.
-
I'm not familiar with the area, but I'm arriving on the 13th and staying at the Lazy Lizard Hostel for 4 nights before the camping begins. Perhaps that is a good place to put a whiteboard? By the way they also offer $3 showers even if you are not staying there.
-
We have never been to Moab before so I can't say where we are staying before the meet up. We were going to see if we could boondock near Willow Springs road/trail, it's 10 miles or so out of town. This area seems to have good reviews and is accessible for large RVs.
-
uggggg.....I HATE when that happens, but due to circumstances beyond my control it looks like I will have to cancel our RV spot.
I am so disapointed right now.
I'll have to call tomorrow to cancel. So if you want to have that spot, please message me.
I am so sad to miss this.
There's a remote chance that I may be able to catch a ride with @shadowmoss and come sans RV and DH. I may possibly end up at the hostel or if there's space in one of the cabins (paging @kudy not sure who else rented a cabin and may have space) I'd be interested in sharing that as well.
I won't know for sure until the afternoon of the 15th though.
Sigh, I'll go cuddle up with a cat and cry a little now...
-
You know you are welcome to ride with me. Take care of yourself now so that we can have a great time in Moab.
-
A whiteboard or piece of paper works great if everyone is at the same place, but if people are boondocking, camping, and staying offsite, it might be harder to coordinate - I just hope we are all able to communicate (maybe we can just do it here in this thread) and coordinate activities together!
Hopefully this campground is pretty open to "guests" coming and going - I imagine the pavilion/group campfire area could be a default gathering place for our group.
-
Montana was snowing so we left early and are now in the Moab area. We are currently staying at Horsethief Campground it's just off of BLM road 313 on BLM 340. Unless we find something substantially better, we'll be here until we move into Moab for the meet up next week. It's not free camping but with our National Parks pass it's $10 a night for a huge RV site with picnic table and fire ring, I won't complain.
It's a little ways out of town but it's not crowded like many of the other areas and the drive is beautiful. There is availability here still but sounds like it does fill up most days by the afternoon.
As we were driving into the area, all we could say was "WOW, Utah is amazing!" I'm glad we came early.

Nice picture! Can't wait to get out there.
I am leaving SW Colorado this afternoon. I might stop by your place--will you be there at 6ish? What campsite are you occupying? Feel free to PM me if you'd like.
I will be picking up Daisy tomorrow morning at Green River and we will be back in Moab at 10am or so. Not sure how she will feel after a marathon train trip, but we might want to drive into Arches and do a hike. If anyone will be in the area tomorrow, let me/Daisy know and maybe we can meet up.
Looking forward to seeing everyone!
-
Sent you a PM @NinetyFour.
-
And another one bites the dust. Unfortunately Aegish and I will now be unable to make it. This has been one heck of a year. If someone is coming in a small RV our site is now available. I hope everyone has a blast in Moab!
-
You know you are welcome to ride with me. Take care of yourself now so that we can have a great time in Moab.
Shadowmoss when are you arriving?
I just arrived in Moab. I will have a private room and can share.
-
I may be giving FrugalZony a ride up and she will know more by Monday. Probably drive up Thursday now, and maybe get in late. Depends on what FZ and I can sort out.

@shadowmoss if you have a chance to head up early, please don't feel like you have to wait for me.
I totally understand, if you'd like to head up sooner, as several people are in the area already.
-
So fun hanging out with Daisy yesterday and then meeting 2Saving4Life for dinner!!
-
I have other reasons to wait until later in the week as well. Right now everything is a movie g target. We will work it out.
-
I should arrive on the 15 or on the 16. Unfortunately, Canyonland does not seem to have tent sites left for those dates. Any chance someone who canceled could transfer me their reservation?
-
Confirmed: I will be at Canyonland, arriving on the 16, leaving on the 18. I'm looking forward to be seeing everyone!
-
Had another fun day hanging out with Daisy and 2Saving4Life and his wife. We did a short hike to look at some rock art, and then this turned into a longer hike up Courthouse Wash for about 1.5 miles. We all were mesmerized by the canyon walls, the sky, the everything. :)
Rumor has it that CanuckExpat has arrived in the Moab area! Yay--can't wait to see him and meet his family.
Currently hanging out with Daisy at the hostel---definitely way more enjoyable than grading papers and preparing for classes--which is what I was doing a year ago...
And Daisy treated me with some delicious wine....yum!!

Yay--glad to hear it! My reservation is currently for the 18th to the 22nd, but I might change things up and get there on the 17th.

Hey, I know all these people! Wish I could be there, too.

No resting around 94. Sbe made me hike right after getting off the 2 day train ride.
I keep saying out loud "aren't you bored without a job?". Um...no.

Did we miss some rock art in May? On the one hand, it's hard to believe it's possible, given the amount we saw. On the other hand, it's not surprising, given the great amount in the area!

And Delicate Arch, even. That climb is no joke. I bet it felt good to move after being on the train all that time, though.

You people are a bad influence. I'd claim I'm being a responsible student by not going, but here I am posting about being responsible while avoiding writing my mid-term paper.

Have fun people! :)

Checking in after a long hiatus on the forum. (I have been having too much fun since retirement in July.). Dw and I are looking forward to seeing everyone in Moab. We should be arriving by 4 at the latest on Thursday. Adios.

I'm sorry but we have to leave Moab this morning and won't be able to attend the meet up. I'm glad we were able to hang out with a few of the early birds before the meet up. My dad passed away last night and we're driving back to Eastern WA. I hope you guys have an amazing time down here. It's so beautiful here and it was a privilege to meet those that I did. Sorry we couldn't stick around.

I am so glad to have met you and your wife. Hope to see you again some time on the road. 😎
Safe travels back to Washington.

There's a remote chance .......
I am out, definitely, unfortunately. You all have fun!
-
@2Saving4Life , I'm so sorry about your dad. Drive safe.
For those still attending the meetup, I should be at the campground Thursday afternoon. I'll be in a black & white Cirrus truck camper. Come say hi!
I'm looking forward to meeting you all

Yay--a couple of us are already at the campground--we are at sites G14 and G15. @Daisy is at a hostel just a mile away and will probably be moving here to the campground on Thursday. @CanuckExpat is at another campground right now, but I think he will move to this campground on Thursday (but I'm not positive). @kudy will also be at this campground at some point. There might be others coming, but I have kind of lost track at this point! We're having lots of fun already, but more hikes and bike rides and campfires with more people will be awesome!
-
We sure do miss @2Saving4Life on our hikes and rides. Wishing you were still here, and not just for the geology lessons.
Have you made it back home yet and been able to see your family?

Most definitely!!

I'm heading that way Thursday. I'm staying at the hostel, but I'll check the campground once I'm there to find everyone. Do they let non-registered folks in to visit?
-
My husband and I are traveling for a year in our sprinter van and happen to be heading to Moab tomorrow. I was browsing through the forum and saw this meet up. Can we stop by and meet some of you fellow mustachians tomorrow night or Thursday? Are there organized events for the meet up?
-

Thanks so much for the comment @Daisy, that makes us happy. We enjoyed your company as well. Did you ever go back to Courthouse wash? I forgot, we did stop at the visitors center after our hike that day and they said to stay on the East side of the river for the trail. Seemed like it was on both sides to me.
We just made it back earlier today, just under 1000 miles in two days. Thanks for checking up on us Daisy, that was very kind of you. Have a great time! We'll hopefully see you at the next one.

@WorkingToUnwind Please do! I won't be arriving until Thursday b/c of camper repairs that delayed me. But the more the merrier!
Plus, I always love checking out sprinter vans ;-)

Thanks Dr. Kidstache! Our sprinter is of the DIY-build variety. It's fun. We've been mountain biking and hiking our way across the country for the past 6 months. It will be great to meet some mustachians! We've always practiced our weird frugal ways in isolation.

We're doing our chores in SLC (P Fit and laundry) and then it's a four hour drive. We'll probably be in Moab around 7pm or so if all goes according to plan. We can pop in and say hello and then we'll be figuring out our camping situation. We've boondocked on BLM land in Moab in the past, so we might do that or see if someone wants to split a site. We shall see!

I haven’t been active in the forums for a long time, but I’m moving to sLC this week and was going to be camping in Moab on the 19th anyway! I’d love to go hang out for the evening. Is there any site in particular I should check to catch the group? I’ll probably just camp on bLm land, but would be open to splitting a site if anyone is looking to share. It’s just me and a border collie with a small backpacking tent.

We can pop in and say hello and then we'll be figuring out our camping situation. We've boondocked on BLM land in Moab in the past, so we might do that or see if someone wants to split a site. We shall see!
We are going to the Moab Brewery at 6 p.m.
Cool, we'll be there around 7. How will we recognize you all? We're tall! Lol. My hubs will be wearing a Colorado baseball cap and I've got a green shirt on.
-
@WorkingToUnwind Please do!
Sure! We look forward to seeing you at camp. When will you be arriving?

We are just ordering now at 6:20.
Walk in and turn right. We're at the front right corner of the restaurant. We are the three most attractive people in the restaurant.
We have a redhead and a guy with a beret.

I'm hitting the road this morning and should be getting in around 4 or 5 pm!
-
Great! Safe travels!

Howdy,
I've been reading Mr. Money Mustache for a couple months now as well as perusing the forums... but this is my first post. You could call me Señor Stubble Cents... or something. Anyway, as a newbie to the community... and as one about to launch on the path to FI,* I wanted to check in to see if it'd still be appropriate for me to try to meet up with y'all in Moab. I'm currently in SW Colorado, but need to make a trip that way anyway and would love to meet others on the journey and maybe (hopefully?) talk a little shop.
* A combination of good luck and good sense earlier in life means I'm able to jump on the path well beyond the trailhead. :-)

Of course—c’mon over and join us!! And it would be great if you could bring some sunshine! 😊😎👍

Awesome, are there any times/places where folks should be hanging out late this afternoon or evening as well as tomorrow?
As for sunshine, I'll see what I can do! :-)

I think it’s a safe bet that after 6pm, at least a few of us will be at the Canyonlands RV campground—right in town. Daisy and I will be sharing site G14.
-
We're on our way! Should be there around 330. Looking forward to seeing y'all at the campground.
-
Yay--safe travels!
-
We’ve checked in, we’re the Minnie Winnie with two kids and two dogs. We’ve been hanging out a few days out at the State Park, Horse Thief Campground, and one night in Canyonlands NP. We’re at the Meetup campground now, our main plans for the weekend are to hang out, be social, and probably wrangling small mammals. We’re also planning on being in the area for at least another week after the Meetup. Anyone else sticking around after Meetup?
-
Cool—I am just down the street. Will be back at the campground in 20 minutes or so.
-
I'm attempting to check in at the hostel. They overbooked. neveri that I paid a couple of weeks ago? No, I don't want to share with a couple of guys which I would if it was my mistake. I may be bumming space to sleep in my car somewhere... I'll be over to the campground as soon as this is sorted.
-
We were just talking about your sprinter van, if you want to show up for a drink :)
-
I'm awake at the hostel. Maybe a half hour to an hour, depending on breakfast options here, I'll be over to the campground to see what's going on.
-
It was fun meeting some of you and exploring the beautiful sandstone formations in good company. Have fun during the rest of the meetup, everyone. Stay adventurous in FIRE and take a moment to thank nature for its generosity.
-
Anyone around this afternoon?
-
Just got into Moab and may go for a short hike with the dog. I’ll swing by the campground later this evenin to see who’s around, but if there’s any kind of group dinner or hike going on I’d love to join in!
-
@Mayan and @kudy Some of us just got back to the campground. I hop y'all stop by!
-
Awesome, I’m heading that way now, though traffic is awful
-
Hey all! We ended up doing a double header day of MTN biking and rock climbing. We're on potash road now and were planning to head over to the campground, but the traffic is awful going into town. We're going to make dinner here instead and see what happens with traffic. What are you all up to tomorrow? Maybe something a bit off the beaten path to avoid the crowds?
-
How far down Potash road did you camp? There is some nice hiking that leaves off from the road right?
BTW, if anyone wondering, I tested today: the pool is heated enough to go in, but it’s not fun when you have to come out. And it tends to be full of kids
-
Also, we are thinking of doing the Hidden Valley Trail tomorrow mid-morning. Looks like the trailhead is a 4 mile bike ride south of town. Trail itself is 6 miles in and out. Let us know if you’d like to join us.

Ooooohhh--I might be interested. Bryan recommended that trail to us this evening. He said there is cool rock art in addition to the great hike.

We ended up driving into town around 9pm after dinner and after the traffic died down. We're stealth camping on o e of the residential streets. I'm not sure about hiking off potash road but there's a lot of rock climbing, called Wall Street.
Definitely post when you know what time you'll be doing the hike tomorrow. That looks like a nice one!
-
Thanks, everyone, for being so inviting and hospitable to a newbie dipping his toes into the Mustachian world. It was an inspiration to meet others who are or who have traveled down the FI path I hope to travel, as well. I hope to see more of you on the forums and in person in the future.
And, NinetyFour, congrats on your FI!!
-
After wrenching my back last evening and having an uncomfortable night I'm heading home. I can't do much for the next couple of days until my back heals and I'm one who prefers to hibernate when I'm not well. I had fun and am up for any more gatherings in the Southwest.
-
Hope your back feels better soon! Thanks for driving up and visiting with us.
-
We are just having breakfast. Will start to get ready to leave when we finish up (and start wrangling small mammals). It’ll take us 30 mins or so to bike ride down so we will post when we are about to hit the road. Anyone is welcome to come along on the bike ride as well, otherwose meet you at the trailhead. I’m guessing we will leave camp around 10:30am.

Thought I would post some pictures from our Moab adventures so far...

This is from yesterday's hike to Bowtie Arch and Corona Arch. I was accompanied by @Daisy , @aperture , arerture's DW, and @Dr Kidstache . So fun. This picture shows Daisy (red shirt) standing below Bowtie Arch.

I am wavering....this might just be a quiet day for me at the campground, with a stroll to the library. Not sure yet. I will check in with you, CanuckExpat, and let you know one way or the other. :)

Heading out shortly. Be at trailhead in 30, bike willing
-
Thanks for sharing your photos, @NinetyFour
It's been a few years since I've been to the Moab area.
But you've reminded us what a beautiful area of the country this truly is.
-
Superb pictures. That is truly a magical place. Must go back someday.

Thanks for exploring a bit of Arches with me! Have a safe trip home.
I got up early today and did a solo hike to Delicate Arch - the views were awesome with the morning shadows!
If anyone sees me in the next few minutes, I think I am going to walk to Gilberto's Taco Shop for lunch.

I hope to spend the whole month of October 2019 in this area, so c'mon down!! :)

Bike ride good, hike good, combination of both has me tired out. We’re going to venture to pool while sun is hot.
@WorkingToUnwind , we were talking about leaking roofs, I was thinking about how our rack is attached and realized I might have a tube of the material they use to waterproof screws and openings on RVs. Let me know if any use.

@CanuckExpat We are tired, too, even without the bike ride! We ended up at the park taking naps this afternoon. It's so nice to have the sun out. Hubs says if you have the tube handy and don't need it, he'll take a look and see if it could help our leaks. Thanks! We were thinking of stopping by after dinner, around 7pm, with some firewood.

Most of us are likely heading to the food truck area in town, and may not be back by 7, but probably not too much later than that!
-
Oh we saw those trucks today. Looks really neat. We'll just meet you all there. We'll head over shortly.

We'll be there in about 20 mins!

Yesterday, we all walked about a mile up to the center of town and ate dinner at the Moab Food Truck Park. It was a nice change of pace and I was glad to get in some more walking. During the day, we had sort of split up into several small excursion groups. Three people ventured to the Needles district of Canyonlands, 6 people did the Hidden Valley hike, 1 person did a solo trip to Delicate Arch, and 2 of us did a scenic bike ride.
After we returned from our Food Truck dinner, several of us gathered again at a campFIRE, while others called it an early night.
Today, we did a group hike up to the Moab Rim, which overlooks the town of Moab, all of Arches National Park, and the La Sal Mountains. The trailhead was close enough for several of us to access it by bicycle, while a group jumped into my truck and drove. Worked out perfectly.
Tonight, we will have one last campFIRE before we all go our separate ways tomorrow morning. :(
Oh, on today's hike, I was eavesdropping on a conversation between a few other MMMers, and heard the terms "gay porn from the 50s" and "SEP IRA" within just a couple minutes. One never knows where a discussion of MMMers might lead. :)
Here are a couple of pictures from today's hike.

Anyone want stuffed peppers or stuffed mushrooms?
-
Best moment of the meetup: ukulele snoop dog at the campfire.
-
Yep--the ukulele session was an amazing way to end this meetup!
Many thanks for everyone who showed up and made this a really special 10 days for me. Mustachians are such great people--interesting, optimistic, funny, upbeat, and grateful.
I am already looking forward to next year: I hope that everyone who attended this year will make a return trip, and that those who were unable to make it this year will be able to make it happen next year.

@kudy So sorry I didn't get to say goodbye to you this morning. When I emerged from my camper after my first cup of coffee, your vehicle was gone. I'm not sure if you had actually left Moab at that point, or were just out doing an errand. In any case, I'm really glad you attended the meetup and hope to see you in Moab next Fall!
-
It was such a treat to get to meet you all. I hope we cross paths again (Moab next year if not sooner!)

I should have asked ninety four how to upload photos. Here is going for broke: (http://MOAB-2.jpg)

I missed the trip but here is a photo of Corona Arch I put up on google maps a while back.

Nice photo farmecologist.

BTW, @aperture , I use flickr when I want to upload pics to the forum. I first upload the pic from my phone to flickr. Then I find the pic in flickr and click on the "share" icon. And I embed the code into my post. I will post a pic here, and then you can click on the "Quote" button in order to see what my code looks like. If you have questions, just let me know.

Back to reality! I ended up having knee surgery the day before the MOAB trip! Anesthesia has worn off by now, just wanted to apologise for being a no show. Glad y'all had a great time!
-
I made it back home a week ago after my travels. I have been catching up at home and not on the forum.
It was so nice to see some friends again and meet some new people at Moab. I really enjoyed my time there and hope to return and see the stuff I didn't get to see on this trip.
Thanks to the organizers and to @NinetyFour and @aperture for the transportation services! Also congratulations to @NinetyFour and @aperture on their current retirements.
I have a few new blogs to follow from the new people I met on this trip.
-
We sure do miss @2Saving4Life on our hikes and rides. Wishing you were still here, and not just for the geology lessons.
Have you made it back home yet and been able to see your family?
Thanks so much for the comment @Daisy, that makes us happy. We enjoyed your company as well. Did you ever go back to Courthouse wash? I forgot, we did stop at the visitors center after our hike that day and they said to stay on the East side of the river for the trail. Seemed like it was on both sides to me.
We just made it back earlier today, just under 1000 miles in two days. Thanks for checking up on us Daisy, that was very kind of you. Have a great time! We'll hopefully see you at the next one.
I hope everything is going well for you. How is it going?
