Oh, and one of the extra camp chairs I’m bringing is……yours!  And I can bring your cooler, too!

I'm a little surprised you still have them!  Thank you, I'd appreciate being able to use them at Moab.

I'm now leaving on the 13th due to a flight schedule change.

And I think the Poisson Dude knows a few things about cars…

I am imagining the MMM Moab Meetup morphing into some kind of MMM Men and Motors group….
Hey don't forget us girl mechanics! I can (lie) about wrenching with the best of them ;-)

Not a mechanic, but I can drive a tractor, does that count?
That's even better!! While my "professional" mechanic days are long over I still like fixing things...er...maybe I should say breaking things. Yeah that's about right. I believe @Sailor Sam would agree and add something about hiding in the bilges with all the strawberry pop tarts.

Sounds like ALOT of people are going. I'm still on the fence due to dog (old dog with doggie altzheimers) and travel issues but off tomorrow anyways and I will see how it goes.
Wait! Who's bringing the strawberry pop-tarts?

Mosquitoes?  They seem to love me. Will there be many there? Anything else to be prepared for?

They love me, too. I put a brand new bottle of skeeter stuff in the rig before Moab '21. I needed it the other day and was surprised to see it had never been opened. The recent floods may have changed things a bit this year, so I would prepare, but not be overly worried. And of course, I'll have some on hand, but not before the 9th.

I can tell you you will not need to prepare for S'mores. I've got that covered. S'mores for everyone with a mustache! (Literally or figuratively)

Since you asked, another thing is that while things can be a tad bit more expensive in Moab, everything is readily available, especially outdoor gear. City Market (Kroger), a full-on grocery store, including fuel of all sorts is just north of the campground. There's a full-line drugstore on the other side of the road and up just a bit. There are outfitters for every price point, including multiple thrift stores. Oh and there's a laundry at the campground. We used it last year and it was clean and relatively reasonably priced. The creature comfort amenities are pretty great for such a small town.

Hey @Chaplin, are you traveling solo or bringing the fambly? Also, will you please bring along a fresh update from our old pal whatshisname? Thanks!

Traveling solo as son has just started high school, although I have tried to rope more than one local into taking advantage of a ride down and a booked campsite. It does look like I'll be sharing a campsite with TTM and spouse which will be great.

whatshisname? - no idea who you're referring to.

I'm jealous, but I will be doing a 4 day bike packing trip on the C&O canal next week and then a family camping trip the week after for 3 nights; so I at least have some fun planned :)

No pop tarts for you! That's officer territory food and not for the likes of the riff-raff. Unless, of course, you were a crafty snipe who stole them away down into the dark dirty bilges for greasy fingered fondling (Precioussss...). Only @Sailor Sam and the fish man know what Im talking about.
Lol, I saw a 12 pack of Frosted Strawberry Pop Tarts (with sprinkles) for 3.49 at Grocery Outlet today. I solemnly admired them and I did not put them in my cart. I know I am not worthy.

I am tempted to come. Considering taking Amtrak and the shuttle from SLC. Or can you take a road bike from SLC to Moab? Haha oh that’s a long way, never mind. Or I could be less dramatic and drive my ancient car.

I'll be driving also so, if anyone flying wants something from Costco, let me know and I'll bring it. Or if you need a cooler, I have many neighbors who will lend one or more.

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Hi Grim!  I’m pretty sure we will need more chairs.  At this point, I think 14 people are flying in, so yes, we will need more chairs.  Thanks!!

C’mon down and join the fun!!!

Not looking good. Humpy Jenga (named after esteemed forum member @monkey jenga) the dog is not doing travel well right now but still hopeful.

Sorry about HJ’s issues.  :(  But if you’re still hopeful, then so am I.  :)

I don’t remember ever encountering mosquitoes in Moab, but as Dicey said, there are stores in walking distance that sell bug stuff.

I would definitely check the weather forecast for Moab ahead of time.  Right now the highs are in the high 70s/low 80s, and the lows are in the 50s, which sounds perfect to me!

Hope you all have an AMAZING trip!!

I'm jealous, but I will be doing a 4 day bike packing trip on the C&O canal next week and then a family camping trip the week after for 3 nights; so I at least have some fun planned :)

Thanks, LWTG!!  Hope you enjoy the bike packing trip and the camping!

Hi @Ozlady !  Wish you could make it this year, but I’m glad you’re considering it for 2023!

Unfortunately, I don’t think a Live Stream is a possibility, but I will definitely be posting some pictures in this thread.  Hopefully others will, too.

I will be traveling tomorrow and attending the CMTO MMM camp in Ontario this weekend.  As a result, I may not be checking this thread as often as I otherwise do.  I should be back “online” on Tuesday, 10/4.

I will also be getting a cabin, which will accommodate more than just me and the VSB. These are one room cabins that the site says can accommodate up to 6. There are two twin-over-full beds, and the VSB and I are calling dibs on one of the full beds, which leaves a full bed and two twins available if anyone wants to split.

Just FYI, the cabins are smaller than they appear. Six would be very tight. Just ask @Embok.

Just thought I’d put it out there that I’d like to hike the Moab Rim trail on 10/8, if anyone would like to join me.  The trailhead is only a few miles from our campground—I actually biked to it one year so that more people could fit in my truck.  :)  This is the “trail” that very serious Jeeps can do (very slowly), and at the top, we will get amazing views of Moab, the La Sal mountains, etc.  I’ve done this hike during every Moab Meetup so far, so it’s become a bit of a tradition.  :)

Done. We can work out what "fair" looks like, especially if there are other takers.

Depending on the condition of my feet (plantar warts suck!) I may or may not tag along. Right now they are behaving nicely, but it's really day to day.

DH and I are so looking forward to seeing you all in Moab, though we cannot stay the whole week, because he has East Coast meetings towards the end of the week. I need to pin him down about what days we will actually be there.

The cabins are quite small.  Four adults would be a lot.  They are really just a sleeping room - fine for comping but basic.  No water, but the campground has decent bathrooms and showers.  DH wanted a hotel room this time, though, so we are staying at a local hotel.

I'm in!

YAY!!!

Depending on the condition of my feet (plantar warts suck!) I may or may not tag along. Right now they are behaving nicely, but it's really day to day.

I hope your 👣 are happy that day!

Sorry to hear you can’t stay all week!  But I’m sure you’ll make the most of your time there!

Is the Moab Rim the "PEOPLE HAVE DIED!!" trail? If so, we agree to hike it as long as everyone promises not to laugh at our poor sea level lungs.

If you mean the curve where that warning is preceded by sharp words about getting the hell OFF your bike, I think that's on the other side of the river.

Don't forget, people die everywhere, every day. Use your head, take your time, don't overreach and you'll be fine.

Edited to add this: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking of sea level lungs and such, Mr. Dicey's recovering from foot surgery very slowly, so we have made peace with the fact that we will mostly be bringing up the rear and/or being camp hosts or townies this trip. We will definitely maybe plan on renting ebikes for an excursion of some sort one day, which others are welcome to join. If we do, it's going to happen fairly spontaneously on a TBD day.

Anyone who is not feeling particularly athletic or is worn out from death hikes things that happen prior to The Dicey's arrival, can take comfort in knowing there will be other erm, slightly less active folks to hang out with. Who knows, there could even be board games happening. Provided someone brings some, lol.

Seriously, to anyone who's feeling nervous, don't worry. The most awesome thing about Moab in all its awesomeness is just how much there is to do for anyone. Some of the coolest petroglyphs are literally by the side of the road.

And while I'm blabbing, Mr. Dicey is definitely an introvert. He only came last year because he loves me and I wanted to insisted we do this thing. He had a blast and n ow he's game for all the Meetups, wa-hoo!

Think about this: talking about money is one of the biggest societal taboos. Yet here we are, each of able to speak this forbidden language fluently. We're going to get along like a house on FIRE. In fact, here's the perfect conversational ice breaker: What are your FIRE plans?

To quote a beloved forumite: "It'll be be great."

Dicey, my comment was meant as a joke that I now realize lacked context. It refers to a photo ToTheMoon took of that warning sign when we were in Moab in 2019.

I was pretty sure of that. I should have separated the rest of my response, because it wasn't directed at you. I'm all about hospitality and I want everyone who's coming on this adventure to feel comfortable. Don't scare the crap out of them!

Oh, maybe I'll bring Trivial Pursuit! Can be played at camp, but also fun to just do it like a trivia game and take turns asking each other the questions. I could see doing this on a hike, once everyone knows their state capitols :)

Also will bring a few other games.

Got my train tix! I'm pulling into Green River early AM on 10/7 and leaving late afternoon on 10/11. Somewhat expensive. Tempted to take my road bike but it's almost 50 flat but isolated highway miles (looks like) from Green River to Moab so I think bus is better. But it looks like there are awesome road bike opportunities. Anyway if necessary I can add my bike. Also tempted to upgrade to a roomette since this will be a loooooong train ride. They have this weird thing called "bid up" where supposedly you bid to upgrade, but it's not clear if that's *additional* cost or total. It must be additional. Anyway I have taken rides this long before in coach so I know I can handle it.

Oh and I want to do the hike!

That’s awesome news!!  I would have offered to pick you up at the train station, but I won’t be able to get out there in the early morning.

Yes, you can get some good road biking in in the Moab area.  There is a paved bike trail that goes north/south along 191.  Looks like it’s called the Moab Canyon Pathway.  Has a good climb, too.  I think it’s ~10 miles max each way.  You could also ride along the river in either direction on the roads.  I would wear the brightest clothes you have, though, because of the crazy tourist drivers.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Awesome!  I like Trivial Pursuit.  The original version anyway, which came out about 100 years ago??  Oh yes, and I will be quizzing you on your state capitals.  And the Canadian ones, too!  And I have also now memorized the capitals of the 50 most populous countries (according to some list on the internet), so prepare yourself for that!!  :)

Is the Moab Rim the "PEOPLE HAVE DIED!!" trail? If so, we agree to hike it as long as everyone promises not to laugh at our poor sea level lungs.

Haha—we will save that hike for another day.  :)   And just to clarify for others—most of that hike (Portal Trail) is a completely safe…….until we get to an overlook (with amazing views—I hope I remember to bring my binocs that day) and IF you choose to go beyond that point, there is a stretch of the trail that is quite exposed and has a ~200 foot drop off.  Folks on the mountain bikes (usually coming the other direction) are STRONGLY advised to dismount at that point or they risk finding themselves on a painful express route to the bottom.

Last year, a fun thing happened while we were on the Moab Rim Trail.  First, we looked across the river and spied Jeeps hanging out atop rocks.  Then, we also saw two hikers way across the way, and we kind of wondered how they got there and what they were up to.  A bit later, Mr. Dicey noticed that one of them was in flight.  😳  Yep—they had sprouted wings and were flying—paragliders, in fact.  We never did figure out where they landed, but hopefully they did so safely.  One never quite knows what one will see in Moab!

For folks who are driving—if you have any extra pairs of hiking/trekking poles, could you please bring them?  I will bring two pairs and probably won’t use them, so I can offer them to others.  (I don’t usually use poles when hiking in Moab (except for backpacking), but others might find them to be handy.)  @Dicey and @Mrs.Prospector have expressed interest in my poles.  Thanks in advance!

I spent the past week in Grand Staircase Escalante, also in Utah, and as usually happens when I hike and climb I put my back out.  I will still be there, but I won't be doing much hiking.  This is kinda the norm for me.  I am working on getting into better shape, but I got excited and over extended myself.  I also took a hard fall in the dark in the campground the day before I started two days of hiking, which didn't help, I'm sure.

I will have my hiking poles, but if I do go off pavement I'll need them myself.  I'll play it by ear.  I will have the tent and camp chairs I have already promised.  My little Mazda3 will be jam packed.

I also have a giant tent that I can lend to @Le Poisson and his DW, so don’t feel obligated.  And I am bringing extra chairs, too.

Sorry about the back pain—hope you feel better soon!

UPDATE: I'm going, 8th to 13th. I Reserved a room at the Lazy Lizard Hostel about a mile down the road from the campground.
Driving from Reno, NV and will have extra room in the Corolla if anyone wants to carpool. Looking forward to meeting everyone and getting dirty hiking Moab. I'm also bringing a floatie to float the river if the opportunity arises. Considering bringing a bike too.

Thanks for making sure we have a roof @NinetyFour! I checked our flight details today, and contrary to my romancing over driving route 66, it looks like we can only cancel our flight for a partial refund in credits, so I guess we're flying. Maybe next year we'll make a road trip of it.

Since we are flying, we'll really need a tent. If you have us covered (literally!) then we will be forever grateful and might even pick up a box of jiffy mix or a polygamy porter to show it.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
