@AlexK i will be arriving in Green River via train with my road bike around 8 am on 10/7 if you are passing through before noon and have room? I also will check out the hostel as I’ll need a place for  1 night after @TheGrimSqueaker leaves. Oh maybe you won’t arrive till the 8th?

I am still coming to Moab, I just won't be doing as much hiking as I had hoped to.  My back has been working it's way to less and less discussion when I move so hopefully by the time I'm there I can enjoy light walking and hiking without popping Naproxen on a regular basis.

Guess it’s not in the cards for me to head to Moab during Autumn. I woke up miserable and am positive for the Cooties. Dodge it for 3 years, it caught up with me sigh (I believe during my big bday work lunch). I had even added time beforehand to my trip to visit Zion for a day. But nope. Not happening.

I need to call the office tomorrow. If I absolutely cannot refund the full amount, I will ask if I can just put it into someone else’s name (Alex and/or Fru-Gal). Will keep you posted.

So bummed.

Update:  Embok and Mr. Embok are still coming, but need to leave earlier than, planned, on Wednesday October 12.  We are staying off site at the Moab Rustic Inn, which is not far from the camp.

So looking forward to seeing you all, and to enjoying the Moab area.

@Chippewa So sorry to hear this - I hope that the symptoms are mild and that you recover quickly. What a disappointment! (and happy belated birthday) :)

I cancelled our flight and our rental car yesterday...

Spoiler: show
...because we have decided to drive down!   (Sorry @NinetyFour - I had to give you that mild panic attack - you can slap me when I arrive!)

Our plan is still to arrive Sunday and depart Friday - the quickest route is about 18 hours of drive time, so not too terrible, even if we add on a detour here and there. We will now have our bikes with us, if anyone wants to go for a pedal? (I know my DH intends to do a ride or three with Chaplin)  :)

See you all soon!

Is anyone passing through or driving from Salt Lake on Friday 10/7 who could give me a ride to Moab? I have the rest of the trip logistics covered, just lacking this bit.

I think there's a bus I can take if necessary.

We arrive on 10/7 at 7:20 PM. Our plan is up in the air at this point but may include a stop overnight at some random hotel along the highway. Or may mean dead-heading from SLC to camp in the dark. We can squeeze you into our budget rental car if you are willing to be squoze.

Thanks for the offer. I fly in on 10/6 and need to actually get to Moab on 10/7 though, for other logistical reasons.

What was the walk you guys (NinetyFour, TTM and friend) did a couple(?) of years ago where you signed up at different times but had permission to go together anyway and the ranger inside the canyon was trying to make you split up anyway?  Those involved will know where I mean I hope.  I'm thinking that may be a good hike for me to do this year.  Sounded awesome and not too much climbing around.  I do remember you had to sign up prior to going.

I'm passing through SLC on the 7th on my way, so yes! Probably mid-afternoonish. I'll send you a PM.

Hey Shadowmoss,

That would be the Fiery Furnace, and it definitely involved climbing around! https://www.nps.gov/arch/planyourvisit/fiery-furnace-hike.htm Might not be quite what you are looking for if your back is bothering you!

So sorry @Chippewa won't be able to make it. She's one of only 3 faces I will recognize. We can get together for lunch or something when it's all over.

Meanwhile, it's getting to be the last minute. Time to start running around in circles and trying to figure out what to take.

I washed and vacuumed my car today. Don't want you nice folks to think I'm the kind of person who carries hay and dogs in my car. I hardly recognize it now.

Mesquite Nevada is the halfway point for me so I plan to spend Thursday night in a hotel/casino there, then finish the drive on Friday. Better 2 easy days than 1 hard day.

I'll see all you folks soon!

This is a bit off-topic, but how the heck did you get a hold of them?  I have called multiple times over the last 10 days and left messages, emailed them, spoken to people at the main reservations line etc and yet have not heard back from anyone! Trying to not be super annoyed with them...but I am super annoyed. :)

I've had a similar experience. You call Moab and leave a message...and get no response. Then you call the main corporate number and leave a message there. Eventually, they call you back when you don't hear the phone ring and leave the sweetest message saying to call back if you still need their help. Grrrr. Lather, rinse, repeat. Argh!

Not going to make it :-(. Returned my rental car and am still in Calif with the old demented dog who I won't leave now.  Have fun everyone and remember: pictures or it didn't happen!!!

:(

You are ever elusive, my friend….

But I understand.

If someone would be willing to share their tent spot with me (1 person, Corolla and small tent) I will go. Would be driving from Reno, NV. Have national park pass to share.

UPDATE: I'm going, 8th to 13th. I Reserved a room at the Lazy Lizard Hostel about a mile down the road from the campground.
Driving from Reno, NV and will have extra room in the Corolla if anyone wants to carpool. Looking forward to meeting everyone and getting dirty hiking Moab. I'm also bringing a floatie to float the river if the opportunity arises. Considering bringing a bike too.

Thanks for the update!  Sorry I didn’t offer to share my camp spot, but someone else might be joining me—just not sure yet.

Sounds like you will be ready for a variety of adventures!!  :)

I also have a giant tent that I can lend to @Le Poisson and his DW, so don’t feel obligated.  And I am bringing extra chairs, too.

Sorry about the back pain—hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for making sure we have a roof @NinetyFour! I checked our flight details today, and contrary to my romancing over driving route 66, it looks like we can only cancel our flight for a partial refund in credits, so I guess we're flying. Maybe next year we'll make a road trip of it.

Since we are flying, we'll really need a tent. If you have us covered (literally!) then we will be forever grateful and might even pick up a box of jiffy mix or a polygamy porter to show it.

No problem, @Le Poisson !  I think you’ll be happy in the tent—it’s big enough that you could even set up camp chairs in it (I am bringing extras) and be completely incognito!

I’d love to try a PP, if you can snag an extra one!

So bummed.

Oh, that sucks. I hope your Covid dance is relatively easy and that we get to meet you next year. Because there will be a Moab Meetup 2023, right @NinetyFour?

Yeah, so sorry you won’t be able to join the fun this year, @Chippewa !  I’m glad you were able to get a refund/credit for next year.  And oh yeah, the Magical Moab Meetup will most def happen in 2023.  :)

We'll be at RV Site 13  7-14.

I'll bring Splendor and probably Uno.
Planning to join the hike Saturday.

Super looking forward to meeting y'all.

Awesome!!!

Update:  Embok and Mr. Embok are still coming, but need to leave earlier than, planned, on Wednesday October 12.  We are staying off site at the Moab Rustic Inn, which is not far from the camp.

So looking forward to seeing you all, and to enjoying the Moab area.

Sorry you’ll need to cut your stay short, but it will be great to see you nonetheless!

Hope you were able to get your travel/lodging all sorted.  Let me know if you need anything.  A few years ago, I picked up an MMMer when she arrived on the Green River train, but I can’t collect you because I won’t be out there that early.

That was an evil thing you did right there.  I think my heart stopped for a whole minute.  When I recovered, I started planning an elaborate prank to play on you in Moab.  Revenge will be sweet.

So have your arrival/departure dates changed at all?  Are you now planning to swing through SW Colorado on your way home?  ;-)

I’d love to bike with you, but I am way out of practice.  I usually do the Bar M trails, or this loop:  https://www.mtbproject.com/trail/592585/monitor-merrimac

We are aiming to keep our arrival and departures the same - we will just leave home a few hours earlier and get home a few hours later. Unfortunately I think my siblings would kill me if we left the kids and dog with them longer than the eight days - but we will do the road trip to you soon. It is on the list (and the kids new passport paperwork is with the gov't now.)

I haven't been on my bike much at all this year, so we will be just fine to go for some pedals. I have no intention of chasing DH and Chaplin around - they can thank me later. :)

And with regards to the prank...I probably deserve it, but please be kind!

Thought I’d post a bit of a packing list.  Obviously, your needs will vary depending on the accommodations you chose and your method of travel.

Water bottle/hydration system (I can’t stress enough how important it will be for you to stay hydrated, especially if you are coming from a lower elevation (Moab is at about 4000 feet))

Various sorts of clothes—mid-October Moab weather can be hot, cool, wet, windy!  Here is a good weather site to check.  Right now, things are looking very nice out there!

Towels

Headlamp

National Park Pass if you have one

Swimsuit

Charger(s) for your electronics

Masks

Sunscreen

Maybe it’s just me, but I’ll be bringing flip flops to wear in the campground shower

Coffee/tea travel mug

Ear plugs

Sunglasses

I will be bringing two tents (one giant one for the Poissons and one small backpacking tent if anyone needs it), extra camp chairs, extra camping lights, my camp stove and fuel pots (if anyone needs this), extra utensils, and an axe and a hatchet.

If you have any other requests, please let me know today or tomorrow.

In case you are wondering, there are electrical outlets at the G tent sites (at least at some of them).  Also, the cabins have electricity, and I bet those staying in cabins wouldn’t mind if you wanted to use one of their outlets for occasional charging.

Again, if you are driving, and if you have room, please consider bringing an extra camp chair or two.  I’m pretty sure we will need them.  Thanks!

Any other questions, please ask!  :)

And if you want my cell phone number, please PM me.

Woo hoo!!!

I called, no answer. Emailed and rec’d a response a couple hours later. And I spoke wrong, I was refunded over half and a credit was issued for the rest. Locked in for next year. :)

MoabDowntown@sunoutdoors.com

I am not sure it is reassuring to find out that everyone is receiving this lack of response, but thank you for commiserating! I just tried option 4, which was to message them via Facebook.

Calling directly and leaving messages = no dice, calling the reservations centre who will pass on a message to have them contact me = no dice, emailed them (7 days ago) = still no response. Maybe their social media person will actually get back to me?  I haven't even been mean (yet!) Lol

Woot woot - turns out Facebook did the trick. Finally managed to cancel my site (hopefully @Chaplin will still share with us) and they refunded the deposit. Now I can turn up without shooting angry glances at the office people - Lol.

I’m glad you were finally able to connect with the campground!  Sorry their customer service has been pretty substandard this year.  :(  Maybe it’s time for us to think about another venue for 2023….

Safe travels, my friend!!!!!  :D

What weight of sleeping bags are appropriate? We've been debating this. If the front sites had electric, we could go buy a cheap space heater if we under packed for space in our bags, but I don't think that's an option.

We are still trying to get through to have our arrival date adjusted to the 8th. So far, no dice.

Fellow Canucks... any Thanksgiving plans? We should go get turkey subs or something.

My G tent site had an electrical outlet last year.  I’m not 100% sure that they all do.

I have an electric space heater and extension cords.  I can bring them.

We don't want to overload your car with stuff for us! We can wait and see how night #1 goes and then make a call on need. The heaters are $35 at the local ACE hardware. But if you want to pack an extension cord, I'm sure it will come in handy for something. We used them at FIREscape to lay out the VolleyHockeyBall field.  :)

The heater is small—I can easily fit it.

Is that a subtle suggestion that I should try to organize a VolleyHockeyBall game in Moab??  🤔  😎

I have this weekend free and am debating driving over from Colorado Springs to meet and hang out with all of you... Trying to catch up on the info and the thread.

1. If I want to sleep in my van, it looks like the only option at Sun Outdoors Moab Downtown is an RV site... is that correct? Tent spots appear to be no-vehicle.
2. To reserve a spot, can't I reserve online? The first page of this thread says to call but then I see other posts about how calling is unsuccessful (not sure if that's calling to cancel/change a reservation vs make a reservation though).
3. Besides this thread, is anyone starting any sort of group chat so that we can organize wheres/whens of hanging out?
4. Anyone need/want a ride from CO?

Great—glad you are interested!!!

I know that vehicles are allowed at the G sites (Deluxe Tent sites), and @oneday used a Tent Site last year and might be able to tell you where she parked her vehicle.  Right at her campsite, I think?

Yes, you can make reservations online.

We don’t have any group chat set up other than this thread.  However, we have also suggested the Zello app, which is free to download.  There is a Moab channel already set up.  It is called “MMM Moab”.  My handle is NinetyFour.  The channel is currently moderated by @Le Poisson.  Zello was pretty handy at our recent meetup in Ontario, and can work well for the Moab meetup as well!

Let us know if you have any other questions!  Looking forward to meeting you!

Just joined the Zello channel as Driftwood81, thank you!

Made reservations, arriving on Friday and heading home on Monday:
7-9 Oct, CG, RV Site; 9-10 Oct, CG, G Site

One major drawback of Zello I found at CMTO was that if you aren't connected at the time a message is sent, you don't get the message.  For someone who prefers (or is able) to be digitally connected only some of the time, many messages get missed.

May I propose WhatsApp or a similar messaging service as an alternative?

All the campsites can accommodate at least 1 car. I slept in my car last year at a rustic site. No problems.

I liked Zello but didn't realize the downside of it. I will see if I can create a WhatsApp group - give me a minute.

Opening the link from my phone let me join the group in Whatsapp, but it says "only admins can send messages".

Sure—we can use WhatsApp.

Also, what has often happened in years past is that people shared ideas for the next day at the evening campfire.  And often in the late afternoon, folks chatted with each other about plans for dinner.

I know that not everyone will be at the CG, so I plan to post things on this thread as I learn of them.

Lastly, there are tentative plans to have a Magical MOAB Meetup HQ of sorts set up at one of the campground sites.  We could leave messages/post plans there as well.
