Title: Melburnian Mustachians? (Australia)
Post by: lizi on June 27, 2013, 02:35:52 AM
Hi all,

I've seen a few Mustachians from Melbourne hovering around the boards and comments sections and I thought it would be neat to have a local meet up. A BBQ on the Yarra would be cheap and easy, if a bit chilly at this time of year. Other winter-friendly suggestions are welcome. I'm in the inner north.

Cheers,

Liz

Hello Liz! I think there's maybe at least three of us Melburnians here? Or something like that. P.S. I notice this is your first post, would like to see you post more often on these boards. It's like you'd gotten to know us but we still don't know anything about you. ;)

Fair enough! That said, I haven't spent that much time in the forum/comments sections so I don't reaaally know people on here either. My first post may have made me sound like more of a lurker than I actually am :)

As for something about me: I devoured the whole MMM blog around this time last year, and made some massive changes to my life as a result (the biggest being riding 15km to work every day). I'm a naturally frugal person thanks to my parents and their simple lifestyle, but I never realised that being frugal could serve a purpose beyond irritating the hell out of my decidedly extravagant boyfriend. MMM certainly shone a light on what saving money is worth and reinvigorated my frugality. I've gone back to uni full time this year to do engineering, which has pared my income right back but hopefully I'll be reimbursed within a few years of graduating.

Now I'm on holidays I'll have a flick through the boards and pipe up if I have anything to offer!

No worries! Sounds like you're doing well. :D

I probably won't be available for any meetups until August (going interstate soon etc). But actually, I do have a suggestion, go look up Free Feed Street Kitchen. They do good work re-distributing cafe/restaurant leftovers to anyone who wants in ( it's not just for the down and out, everyone is welcome). They have a quick Free Feed this Friday that I may attend, actually, it'll be my first time visiting and I'll see what it's like.

There is a possibility that I'll be in Perth next year. But we'll see. ;)

Are you thinking of moving here, or coming on holiday?

Perth is awesome. We have a lot going on now, and a surprising amount of free/frugal stuff to do. If you're thinking of moving here I'd suggest checking out We Love Perth - http://weloveperth.net.au/ - have to ignore the spendy crap but it's a good intro to the creative side of my sunny little city.

Housing is just as insane as everywhere else in Aus, but the salaries here are relatively high as employers are competing with the mining industry for staff.

Thanks! :) I visited for the first time this year, with my boyfriend (it's his hometown). His family is out in the Perth Hills area, though, which isn't very happening (but I guess could be good for a simple, frugal lifestyle). I remember popping by that website when I was researching things to do in Perth, but not very thoroughly, will definitely take a better look if I move there.

We may possibly be moving in with his parents next year. I love Melbourne and am reluctant to leave it behind - but I had a good time when I was in Perth, and the move would be really helpful for achieving extensive travel goals while still having a home base, without having to pay for rent/storage, if we do any long trips. The idea is to stay with his parents in Perth, do a decent chunk of travelling, probably mostly in Asia (and also visit my parents there while we're at it). And we'd either be on sabbatical or working as digital nomads during this time. But, yeah, it's still up in the air... I'm a little scared of changing the status quo, and yet, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, fortune favours the bold, etc etc, right? :p

Huh, its too far to ride my bike to Melbourne or I'd come.
Some Aussie meetups would be good but we seem to be sprinkled a bit thin......

Limeandpepper, are you concerned about being isolated if you move here? Or does your partner still have a social circle in Perth? I'm pretty introverted so i'd hate to move away from my little niche, but it sounds like it would enable you to fulfil some big dreams :-)
Title: Re: Melburnian Mustachians? (Australia)
Post by: limeandpepper on September 19, 2013, 09:13:23 AM
HappierAtHome, yeah I think it's the isolation that makes me hesitant. Neither of us actually grew up in Melbourne, but have lived here for several years, and have a bigger and more diverse social circle here than where we originally came from. Back home it's just high school acquaintances, while Melbourne, I guess, is sort of where I've found myself as an adult. Also, in Melbourne we both live in inner-city suburbs, so don't feel the need for a car, both of us just walk or take public transport. If we move to Perth CBD that would be alright, but the Hills just seem so far away from everything.

However, benefits are: getting to spend time with his family, and also my family home will be a shorter plane ride away as well - basically, the opportunity to spend bigger chunks of time with both sets of families. We can be nomadic and spend weeks with the family, then weeks somewhere else, etc., it could be very cool. And it could be just the push I need to downshift and explore life outside the office.

We sure are! I've seen a few people from Sydney or Melbourne, and I've just seen another Perth person here for the first time ever. Maybe mustachianism is gaining traction here?

Yeah, I'm sure you're already aware of this, but living in the hills makes it very, very hard to use your bike, shanks pony or public transport to get anywhere. But then at the same time, it sounds like it would suit the kind of lifestyle you want to transition to. It sounds like you're pretty close to FI?

Yeah, it would be a very hilly 30-minute walk or something like that, to the closest shops. I'm used to having shops within 5 minutes walking distance!

In regards to FI, I've probably still got another ten years of full time work to go, if I stay in Australia, which is a fair while away. If I return to my home country, then it becomes exponentially closer, say a couple of years. Ideally I'd spend time in both countries... that's what my retired parents are pretty much doing these days!

Depends if enough of us are proactive and organised enough to make it happen, I guess. :p  I think there may be a couple more Melburnians around on the forums but they haven't participated in this thread yet.

Nice! I'm actually in inner southeast but spend half my time at my boyfriend's place inner north.

P.S. I've gone to that street kitchen thing I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread, a couple of times. It's pretty good.

this is quite interesting...so many Melbournians!

Sydneysiders must be a different breed. Being mustachian and paying a Sydney mortgage is generally thought to be mutually exclusive :)

Good luck guys & girls, hope you have fun.

Ooooh this is so exciting!

I've been going to the Free Feed Street Kitchen regularly since you first mentioned it, limeandpepper. It is such a great idea. Our freezer is full of delicious fancy sourdough bread.

So maybe for a meet up we could colonise the FFSK on a Wednesday night. It might be a bit tricky to kick back and form a splinter group in the limited space, but it certainly is an exercise in mustachianism. Otherwise I was thinking a BBQ or just a couple of beers in a park somewhere, and that's about where my creativity runs out. If anyone else has any suggestions let me know!
Title: Re: Melburnian Mustachians? (Australia)
Post by: limeandpepper on October 09, 2013, 07:07:55 AM
Hey Liz, I'm so glad my FFSK suggestion has been a boon! They do such great work. I've been a couple of times but only on the "Grab & Go" Free Feed First Fridays which were running July - September... not sure if it's still happening. The Friday ones don't have the social aspect that I think the Wednesday ones have. What was it like when you went? Do you hang around and chat to people?

I'd be happy with either FFSK or a simple BBQ somewhere. Another possibility is a potluck picnic.

Hi Melburnians!

I'm sorry to hijack your thread, but I thought I'd take advantage of the congregation of you to ask for advice :)

My husband is from Melbourne, but we currently live in my hometown in Canada. We're headed back to Melbourne for a visit next week. My Australian visa (temporary work permit, should convert to permanent residency next year) has finally come in, so while we aren't planning on moving to Oz in the short term, I want to activate it before it expires so the money and effort isn't wasted.

I'm in Melbourne for a short two weeks (my husband is staying for 5 weeks) and have been giving thought to how to keep a visit to Melbourne a little more frugal than normal! When we visit we always get caught up with seeing people we haven't seen in ages, going out to eat etc., and our bills make my stomach squirm. We also tend to like to do something special since we're there, which ends up costing a bit too.

This time we're in a bit better position already. We have a wedding to attend of some very frugal friends. The wedding will by no means by over the top and it will be less expensive than many weddings we've been to recently, and we'll get to see lots of our friends. The following weekend friends of ours have planned a camping trip that more and more people are signing on to! I am so excited to have this frugal way to see everyone again :)

My question is for the weekdays in between. I'd still like to be a bit of a tourist and soak up some of the lovely Melbourne atmosphere. This usually lends itself to drinks in an alley or (more commonly) at the bar on the Yarra... Ponyfish I think? Expensive! We'll be staying between Port Melbourne, Beaumaris, and will likely head down the peninsula at some point towards Rye. I'm hoping for some bike riding to explore.

Can anyone suggest some lovely places and experiences in Melbourne that won't cost much, if any $? I'm thinking events at Federation Square, picnics at a lovely park, out of the way spots that only Melburnians know about?

Can't wait to be back in your lovely city (and escape the ridiculous winter we're having)!!

Hello Parkette!

I'm quite a homebody, so others might be able to give you more diverse suggestions. I love food. An idea would be to visit one of the Melbourne markets (Queen Victoria Market, South Melbourne Market, Prahran Market) and have a nice stroll, grab some food (e.g. cheese, bread/crackers, fruit?) from there and have a picnic lunch at a nearby park. :) Oh and if you feel like a bit of seafood luxury, you can get a dozen oysters from South Melbourne Market for $12, which is much cheaper than restaurants. If you're eating out, check out Urbanspoon for cheap (the ones with just one $ sign) but highly rated spots - anything above 80% is usually pretty decent.

I'm not very up-to-date with events myself, but you can check these sites for event calenders and such:
http://www.thatsmelbourne.com.au/Pages/Home.aspx
http://www.onlymelbourne.com.au/

Oh oh oh and I'm super excited about this. You'll arrive in time for this installation:

It may be your kind of thing, or not. I'm planning to go play a piano or two with my boyfriend! :D

Ha Parkette, I've just done the exact opposite and swapped Melbourne for snowy Quebec!

For a cheap way to have a nice drink Melbourne, I would recommend buying some beer/wine and enjoying it in a park (Carlton Gardens, Fitzroy Gardens, etc). If it's a nice day I can guarantee it will be just as good as a bar. Footscray is also an awesome place to go for cheap market food, and I second the Queen Vic market suggestion. If you go near closing time everything gets super cheap.

Cycling is a great way to get around, and it's a really easy city to ride in. The bike hire scheme isn't ideeeaaal, mostly due to needing a helmet, and having a 30 minute limit. If you need a bike you can probably just borrow mine for 2 weeks, it's just sitting at home feeling neglected.

Also, if you do get roped in to going out for dinner/drinks here are some cheap(er) suggestions:

- Killiney Kopitam, Lygon St, Carlton. Singaporean restaurant, most meals <$10
- Ajisen Ramen, two locations in the CBD: Bourke St and Central. Japanese ramen noodle place, mostly <$15
- Houndstooth, Johnston St, Fitzroy. Does fixed price courses, ie $20 for two course, $25 for three, $30 for four. Two is plenty, and the food is always great. It also has long dark wood tables and nice lighting so you feel like you're spending a lot more.

There is also heaps of cheap Asian food, pubs tend to have cheaper nights during the week (if you like craft beer Dejavu Bar in the city does $6 pints on Wednesday nights).

I will update you if anything else springs to mind! Enjoy the (relative) warmth!

Footscray is also an awesome place to go for cheap market food

Adding to this! Not only are the markets cheap, but they also offer more tropical fruits and vegetables than you don't easily find elsewhere in most of Melbourne. Also Footscray is a great place for Vietnamese food. If you do go there, you can grab a pork baguette for about $4, or a bowl of pho for about $9. Richmond is also great if you like Vietnamese food. Springvale as well, but it's further out.

Hey guys! Whatever happened to the Melbourne meetup? I would love to catch up with other Mustachians. I think anything in the CBD or close to it would be ideal as it's central. Other than that, I don't have any suggestions - just wanted to register my interest and turn on the 'Notify' option for this thread. But we should totally do it!!

Unfortunately it looks like we're past picnic / BBQ weather these days. These are about the cheapest eats I can find in Melbourne CBD, feel free to chime in with any other suggestions.

Yeah, it's pretty good but since my boyfriend moved interstate, I haven't been hanging out inner north, it's a bit out of the way for me as I live and work south of the river. But you should definitely check out Free Feed Street Kitchen if it's convenient for you, I went a few times last year and it was great, as free food tends to be! ;)

I'm happy to pay ~$10 or so. I think the CBD would be best as people will be coming from different suburbs - I myself would be coming from the west. Either of those things limeandpepper suggested is good with me, and I've also been to Killiney Kopitiam (mentioned earlier) and loved it.

What day are we thinking? Maybe Saturday, for lunch, or Friday for dinner?

Would you mind if I jumped in? I'm new to mustachianism but slightly less new to the general mindset ... I live out east but work in the CBD.

Given the weather, as a suggestion, there are some cheap Asian food places in the city where you can get a feed for under $10 ... although I can't recommend anything personally. That might be a nice alternative to somewhere outside?

Nice to meet everyone - have you all been here long?

The more, the merrier! We haven't arranged any meetups yet, so this would be the first one! I also work in the CBD and a cheap Asian place sounds great. If all else fails, we could just go for a walk in Chinatown...

Haha when my boyfriend came back to Melbourne for a visit (after being away for only 6 weeks), he ate dumplings like everyday. (There are several dumpling places within walking distance of my apartment.)

As far as CBD options go, I most recently tried Shanghai Street Dumpling, which was great (though there can be queues!). Or for something a bit different there's also Shandong Mama. Any other suggestions welcome.

For dumplings Shanghai street are my favourite - the wontons in peanut sauce, xiao long bao (steamed OR fried) are great.

There's also a Ugyr place that's quite good for those that haven't tried it.

Cool! I've sent some PMs to other Melbourne people who have previously expressed interest, in case they are still keen but just haven't been following the thread.

I'm good for the 24th, but is there any chance we can make it just a little later - say, around 12:30-1pm? I have something that morning that might make me late if it's at 11:30.

Well as the OP I'm pleased to see this taking off! Unfortunately I'm overseas until the end of July so hopefully this meet up is the first of many and I can sidle in on the action later. Have fun!

Hopefully you get back just in time before I leave Melbourne, Liz!

Okay should we lock in a time? Saturday May 24th, and does anyone have a preference for either 12.30pm or 1pm?

Also someone who indicated interest earlier in this thread I pm'ed to let them know something was happening, they pm'ed me back to ask if Shanghai Street Dumpling has any gluten-free dishes on their menu, LonerMatt would you happen to know? I've only been there once, so I'm not super familiar. I also suggested they pop in this thread with any other suggestions but haven't heard from them since, so I'm not sure if they're still interested.

The earlier the better for me - but half an hour is not a big deal.

Hi all.

Hi limeandpepper: thanks again for the PM. Yep, I'm still interested, though my quick online check says there won't be anything gluten-free at a dumpling house. Boo. That's okay, I'll just do the ultimate Mustachian thing and just show up for a drink/jasmine tea and pass on the food. :)

12.30 Saturday works for me.

Yay, glad to see you join in, vjb! Do you have any suggestions for a gluten-free cheap eats place in Melbourne CBD? That dumpling place can get super busy so it's good to have a back-up in any case.

Hmm, tricky. I don't often eat in the city unless I'm going fancy. For cheap eats in the past I've just hit Don Don and sat on the library lawn, but it's tiny and not necessarily a great place to have a chat. I see Huxtaburger has a CBD location now though, and burgers are $9–13; would that be a good backup place? (GF buns are $3 extra, but what's new.)

There are vegetable dishes - but the soy sauce might be an issue?

I'm happy with either your suggestions, vjb! If the weather is decent, sitting around on the library lawn would be pretty nice. :)

I guess for now let's lock in 12.30pm.

Should we meet outside Shanghai Street Dumpling (342 Little Bourke St) as per original plan, and then decide from there? Or is there a better place to gather together? And should we have some kind of "theme" to make it easier to identify one another? E.g. wearing certain colours / patterns, etc. Or if you can post what you will be wearing here. I, for one, might quite possibly walk in to the city, and thus be wearing my trusty Vibrams, that should make me easy to spot... :p

I am definitely out of the fashion cycle - had to look up what Vibrams were! I will be wearing a quilted jacket and am short and dumpy. Meeting outside the Dumpling place sounds good to me.

Deb - The people I met up with were incredibly interested in the notion of your creating your own embroidered jackets.

But you did such a good job last time! That's it for life now, you know-- you are the official organiser for the Melbourne Mustachians. Or at least until you leave!

Weekdays are good for me as well, but lunch might be tricky for others who don't work in the CBD.

Can't believe I missed this! Though i am also gluten free, dumplings have been the toughest to give up, they were an integral part of my childhood city trips!

I'm inner-NE Melbourne, and would love to come to the next meet-up :) My partner can only come on weekends, but I'm flexible...

It's been great just reading the general forum and seeing all these mustachian people around the world - to think that there are lots of us just here in melbourne is very cool!!

A BBQ could work well...i'm not put off by cold weather, there are lots of public bbqs under cover... :P

There's a bunch all along the Yarra, from down near Crown all the way up to Richmond and the MCG.

I second the BBQ idea! If we all did a little potluck for food to bring, we could set a maximum price per-person and try to all stay under it. Mustache fight!

All along the yarra there's lots... I noticed that many of us are in the north - would it be easiest to go somewhere like Fairfield boathouse? The parks around there have lots of bbqs and it links to the yarra trail (& darebin creek trail / trainline paths etc)

Whenever i go past flagstaff gardens theres always people using the bbq there... I suspect middle of winter it'd be a good spot :)

Hey Melbourne Mustachians,

I'm really excited this group has taken off! I live in Carlton, right by the Gardens and I'd be willing to loan my courtyard (if sunny)/kitchen (if Melbourne wintery) sometime from mid-July onwards for another get together. The Yarra BBQs are great, but maybe we'd have to hold off until September (or November, if this year is anything like last year).

Are we still planning for this weekend? I can't do Sunday lunchtime, but anything else is fine. Maybe have a backup of meeting for coffee? Then if the weather is nice, we can instead have an impromptu walk to relax in a park nearby...?

Argh - hi everyone! As was noticed, yes I did disappear from the forums for a while, I'm so sorry! I'm back in Melbourne, and finally remembered to follow this up. Hope everyone is still keen, and can forgive me. I can definitely offer up my place for a courtyard bbq (if this crazy weather leaves us). Otherwise I've started going along to the Free Feed Street Kitchen on Wednesday nights again, they had a huge spread this week and didn't even finish it so more mouths are welcome. Bring bags and tupperware because there's a stack of bread and other leftovers as well.

If we do want to have a bbq, maybe people could start throwing dates in the ring. Weekday evenings work for me, or weekends. I'm away the 23/24 August, but other than that I'm pretty free.

Well I'll be at FFSK tonight, it's on Smith St, Fitzroy. I guess I should find something with a mustache on it to be recognisable. If I don't, I'll be wearing a pink tshirt with a brontosaurus (or apatosaurus for the dinosaur nerds) on it and a grey jacket. I'll also be the one scooping up armfuls of bread to take home for the freezer.
Otherwise the 30th works for me as well!

Yes, we should get on to this while the weather is fining up! This weekend looks nice and sunny, I'm busy for the few weekends after that until after the Melbourne marathon (anyone else running?). Otherwise I am a bit freer during the week, especially in the evenings.

I had this thread set to notify me, but it hasn't. :-/

Anyway peeps: this Sunday it's going to be 27! Picnic weather!! How about it? Matt, you in town at all? Kaetana? Everyone?

I'll be around! We have airbnb guests staying at our place so I can't offer my courtyard, but there's plenty of park space around for a picnic/BBQ. Maybe one of the BBQs along the Yarra? I imagine it will be pretty busy though, all of Melbourne will be making the most of the weather. Otherwise Carlton Gardens/Macarthur Place/Edinburgh Gardens/any other park in the city/inner north would suit me, though I don't mind travelling a bit.

I'm gonna have to pass on this one. As beautiful as Sunday is shaping out to be, my husband got hit by a car while on his bike yesterday! He's okay, but needs me around the next few days to get around. You guys go ahead and enjoy, though! I'll catch the next one.

Ahh, I'm so sorry to hear about your husband, kaetana! Hope he's ok and recovers soon.

I'm free after 2pm on Sunday. Does anyone have a preference for a park or another place to meet? I think it'd still fun with a handful of people, at least I'll get to finally meet some of you after missing out on the last one.

Sunday afternoon sounds good to me! We can turn it into a late picnic lunch if you like. The parks will be pretty busy, but I'm happy with Fitzroy Gardens, it's pretty central?

I won't be looking after about 6am tomorrow because I'll be travelling, so please say whether it's on or not before then. Where in the Fitzroy Gardens (it's been many years since I was there, and absolutely ages since I saw the fairy tree) - the temple of the wind (nice and small, easy to find people)?

Seems like there's 4 of us.
How about we meet out the front of parliament house and make our way there together.
Haven't really been to Fitzroy gardens so don't know my way around there too well.

In addition, let me run through some of the things I'll offer:

1. Stories (getting detained in China, chasing girls in Taiwan, Mildura, Warrnambool, Melbourne).
2. Quotes from teenagers
3. Exceptional knowledge of cashmere production
4. Possibly a dessert made by me, possible another dish
5. You can watch me play with my hair
6. We'll talk about LimeandPepper
7. People will complain about their jobs, I'll romanticize mine
8. Others will correct my thoughts about international economics
9. I'll correct others' thoughts about local education
10. Good times, laughs, and frivolity will be had
11. People can ask me why I want to go to Iran
Title: Re: Melburnian Mustachians? (Australia)
Post by: NumberJohnny5 on February 04, 2015, 03:31:11 AM
Oh, there's an interview process?

1. You can make fun of my accent (redneck American)
2. You can guess whether I'm a dude with long hair, or a girl with facial hair (toss up, really)
3. Sadly, we ate all the bacon we brought with us (shhhhh), but I can bring some Kool-Aid.
4. I'll complain about how high the AUD was when we came over (and converted USD to AUD) and how low it is now that we'll be doing the reverse.
5. I can bore you about tales in Alaska. "Freezing" here means it's a bit chilly. Freezing in Fairbanks has a slightly different meaning.
6. When asked my occupation, I'll rotate between "Homemaker", "Second in Command", and "Oh god, is that Vegemite? GET THAT SPAWN OF SATAN HIMSELF AWAY FROM ME!!!!"
Title: Re: Melburnian Mustachians? (Australia)

Wait, you brought bacon to Australia from the U.S.?! It was fine going through customs? I did not know this was a possibility, I might be bringing back some from Canada!

I can offer home brew (maybe just a taste depending on the number of thirsty Mustachians), tales from surviving two Canadian winters with thin Australian blood, how much I'm looking forward to earning coin after nearly a decade being a student, and how to successfully live off nothing while being a student for nearly a decade. Frugality tips galore!

Hi All,

New to the forum, but the missus and I would be interested in the meet up. Been reading the blog for a while and we are new to Melbourne.

Missus and I follow the Mustachian way of life. Well she doesn't know she does but she seems happy to :)

I'll keep an eye out for whenever you pick a date!

Cheers
Darren

Canned meats are ok. They actually have canned bacon. What we brought was probably not technically allowed, but within the spirit of the rules. It was vacuum sealed cooked bacon. Shelf-stable, not raw. We did declare food, and said there were no fresh fruit/veggies, it was all packaged/processed food. They didn't bother checking (and we had a checked bag full of food, I took a picture to make other expats here jealous and it covered our whole table).

We need to start a rumours about LnP section.

"I heard she dropped out of a dance troop to pursue a career in high story window washing."
"No, that's not true, she left Malaysia after being implicated in a plot to radically raise the ringgit so she'd be rich."
"That's crap, but what IS true is that she once fixed a broken 1983 Commodore with a rubber band, swearing and expert knowledge of superglue."
"Dude, that's similar to the time she was in Burma and ended up playing Aung Sang Suu Kyi in a highly stylised Bollywood adaptation of her life."

Btw - 'spirit of the rules'? Lol what?

My experience with customs here is if you're white there will never be any trouble, even if you break the rules (avoided fines three times).

Awesome, seems like we're getting quite the crew together. Is there a general preference for weekends/evenings during the week? A weekend afternoon in March would suit me, before uni craziness sets in. Might be easiest to set up a couple of polls about a date and type of meet up. Any suggestions to start?

Assemble! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVlXYoVZHfA :)

I've been meaning to give Lentil As Anything (http://lentilasanything.com) a try, might be an alright spot for a meet up (although let's remember frugal vs cheap (http://www.theage.com.au/it-pro/lean-takings-as-tightwad-diners-exploit-lentil-as-anythings-philosophy-20150209-138wvk.html)).

The Lentil as Anything in Abbotsford is right off the Capital City/Yarra bike trails, or accessible via Johnston St for all the cyclists (which is everyone right?!). I would be down for that, the convent has nice grounds so we can grab food then spread out somewhere, weather permitting. I was so disappointed to hear about them getting massively ripped off like that, especially from Rainbow Serpent festival folk who surely are all about love and peace.

I have no idea what happened, but at some point I stopped getting notifications - for this thread, for my journal, and for personal messages. By sheer luck I happened to see Deborah's message. Abbotsford is a little far for me, but I should be able to make it. What's the best way to get to Lentil As Anything from the CBD? Would a train to Abbotsford + walk the rest of the way be best?

The bus to Doncaster from Lonsdale or LaTrobe would be the most direct. 209/or something, used to ride there to get to a girl.

As I'm coming by car, I could probably pick you up (I will be coming from Bendigo in the morning) - I could pick you up from Glenferrie Station since I want to go to Haighs (or you could meet me at Haighs), and there is one quite close to that station. You are on that line aren't you? I have a feeling you are either on that line or in the North - and I could pick you up more-or-less on the way. Tell me a time and place.

Bike :)

I'm sure there's buses from the city as well, or even walk from Victoria Park station (South Morang/Hurstbridge line). Unfortunately it's not all that close to the train/tram lines.

Here's the directions. Thanks, Deb! I'm actually on the Werribee line. But I'm quite looking forward to biking into the train station, and from there I should be able to just take a train to Flinders, switch to the South Morang line, and then I'll probably just walk from there. I thought of just biking from Fed Square, but I'm too scared to bike somewhere new!

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Sorry guys - I messaged Deb but I woke up late not near Abborsford and the GF wanted to hang out and that's a pretty strong pull factor in my life.

Ahhh so sorry to miss this! I was trawling through my junk mail for some unrelated email and I saw the recent notifications…which had always previously gone to my inbox. I was even thinking I should check the forum before the 15th but then totally forgot. Hopefully you all liked each other enough to want to meet up again, and it sounds like Lentil As Anything is a good meeting spot. Having a separate group like Facebook would be good to avoid missing out, but I hope to spot the next meet-up either way!

A friend recently referred me to HelloFresh (http://www.hellofresh.com.au) and now I have two free boxes of food to pass on (enough for 3 meals for two people, delivered to your door). Once you sign up you then get 3 free boxes worth of referrals, so this feels like a giant pyramid scheme where no one will ever buy any food boxes.

Otherwise if you miss out on my free referrals if you use the code URS73C you get $35 off your first box of food (full disclosure: then I get $30 of credit with them).

You can cancel/pause your subscription at any time, just make sure you do it within the first week or you'll get dinged $69 for your second box. They deliver in Melbourne and other metro centres. I just thought this was a worthy promotion to pass on to Mustachians!

Merri Creek trail up to Coburg Lake is nice as well. There migh be BBQs up there we could use, though I imagine all of Melbourne is waiting for a fine enough weekend to get out and use them as well.

G'day all,  the missus and I would be up for this depending on the day/night, but we're generally available as we mostly do things around the house keeping the costs down :)

We're down the SE suburbs,  in Edithvale.  Happy to meet up anywhere really, or if the group thing becomes too hard to schedule just hit us up anytime (msg, email) and we'll see if we're available to catch up for a chat.  it would be refreshing to talk to like minded people for a change instead of getting blank stares or looks of incredulity when we mention our retirement goals to people.

Cheers,
Mark

G'day Syednaeemul.  Welcome to the forum.  The other Melbournian's seem to be busy pre-XMAS but I for one am glad to see another new Mustachian in Melbourne.

Happy to catch up and talk about happiness in frugality in Australia or anything else really.  We're in the SE suburbs.

Feel free to hit us up anytime, and in the meantime feel welcome !

PS:  Open invite for anyone to catch up with myself and my girlfriend.

Any Melbourne MMMers interested in planning a meet-up - maybe a barbecue or something on the beach - probably anywhere between St Kilda and Hampton would be most central for everyone to get to.

Saturdays or Sundays would probably be fine for us.

Hey there Andy,

Me and the missus would be up for this,  most weekends are fine for us.

Should we just set a date a month or so out?  This doesn't seem a particularly active thread so it might be better to just set a date between us and see if momentum builds up rather than wait for momentum to build up and then arrive at a consensus.

Either way we're in.

Cheers,
Mark

Hi there.

I'd be keen to meet up.  I've never met a fellow mustachian before, other than the 2 friends I've half converted!

I'm in Fitzroy but can travel pretty much anywhere by bike.  Always happy to ride down St Kilda way or anywhere along Beach Rd/Port Melbourne etc.
Title: Re: Melburnian Mustachians? (Australia)
Post by: kaetana on January 27, 2016, 07:34:05 PM
I'm keen to meet up. The CBD would have been more convenient, but a barbecue by the beach does sound nice.

I agree that we should just set a time, date, and place and then just see who shows up. There don't seem to be too many of us judging by the last two meetups I went to, so it might take some time to build up enough momentum to agree otherwise.

A Saturday would probably be best for me. How about February 20th?

20th seems fine on my calendar.
Is everyone thinking lunch-time-ish or evening (it's summer afterall, so if it's a hot day will probably still be light/warm around dinner time)?
We're fine for lunch or dinner.

Yeah I'm keen, although I'm not available on Saturdays for all of February (playing cricket).

I'm in the northern suburbs, but I don't mind travelling a bit for a meet up, even if it's all the way to the other side of the Yarra :)

A barbie at a park or the beach sounds ideal.

hey kaetana, mark and de'ana

Perhaps go through the program and just see if anything takes your interest and sign up. Plenty of the sessions seem to be for free. I originally mentioned it because I thought it might interest some Melbourne based MMMers, but I wouldn't recommend any specific sessions as I don't know any of you or your interests!

Apparently Elwood isn't near public transport and 3pm is a weird time.

There is an amount of talk around that perhaps the Melb Botannical Gardens more toward lunch time would suit better.

It's still feeling a little volatile but I will keep you all posted with updates as I hear more :)

Title: Re: Melburnian Mustachians? (Australia)
Post by: andystkilda on February 05, 2016, 04:15:56 PM
Yes St Kilda beach or Melbourne Botanical Gardens may be easier for those taking public transport.
As for the time will just depend on everyone's preferences for midday lunch or early evening barbie (if it's boiling hot may be better for the evening).
Let's get everyone to block out 28th afternoon in the calendar and we can decide closer to the date the exact time perhaps.
Title: Re: Melburnian Mustachians? (Australia)

Yeah I prefer the idea of lunch, especially if it's a BBQ and we're bringing stuff.

I'm happy with either the Botanical Gardens or St. Kilda beach, although I reckon if it is hot, the gardens would be nicer.
Title: Re: Melburnian Mustachians? (Australia)
Post by: kaetana on February 05, 2016, 05:01:15 PM
I also prefer lunch. However I do agree that it's worthwhile to have a backup plan in case it's too hot or it rains. Maybe we can just buy lunch at a reasonably priced nearby restaurant as a Plan B. I'm not too familiar with the area so I don't have any places in mind.

Alas, i may not be able to do the weekend of the 27-28th.  I've been invited to a bike touring trip  and seeing as I bought a tent abuot 2 years ago and have not yet used it, i can't really pass up the opportunity to learn the ways of cheap bicycle touring holidaying!

Perhaps I'll be able to report back on my findings at the next meet up.

I haven't actually been to any but they look interesting and relatively cheap.

A friend sent it to me to let me know about the sauerkraut making class, but I managed to make my first batch and it didn't turn into a stinking mess so not sure if I need to go!

I've been to one - it was a class on Auslan basics, and it was great! I have always wanted to learn Auslan (I know a bit of ASL) but the full-length classes are extremely expensive! For the price, the Laneway Learning one was excellent value.

So where will we be meeting on Sunday? And when - lunch time? Sounds like a nice day - 15 - 24 light winds partly cloudy, 20% chance of rain.

The botanic gardens map is here http://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/documents/RBGV_Melbourne_Brochure_Map.pdf and the nearest gate to St. Kilda Road appears to be Gate O of F, so we could meet at the western lawn perhaps? However, I can't see any bbqs on the map.

The other option was St. Kilda Beach, but I don't know the area, so I can't think of a meeting place there.
Title: Re: Melburnian Mustachians? (Australia)
Post by: deborah on February 23, 2016, 03:39:02 AM
Mum says that all the bbqs are on the river, rather than in the gardens, and that at lunchtime on a Sunday they are packed out.
Title: Re: Melburnian Mustachians? (Australia)
Post by: andystkilda on February 24, 2016, 04:43:01 AM
Hmmm...

Yeah the barbecues are on the river, and yeah probably will be busy on Sunday.

If we have picnic mats to sit on though should be fine - we can just cook the food in between other groups and bring it to eat as a picnic.

We should also probably all bring one thing - will be easier than everyone trying to bring everything.

We can bring paper plates/cutlery/cups, soft drinks and juice, chips etc.
Someone can bring bread/rolls, someone else sausages, someone else some meat etc.

North side of Albert Park also has a pretty nice barbecue/picnic area if anyone thinks that's a better option.
Title: Re: Melburnian Mustachians? (Australia)
Post by: thrax on February 25, 2016, 02:23:09 AM
Heya Andy,

While we're happy to bring whatever is required, it might be hard to organise as we really don't have much of an idea about how many are going to turn up.

It would probably be better in this instance for each person to just bring their own food.  People could bring their own stuff for BBQ or cold dishes, vegemite sanga's, or whatever.

As I said though,  happy either way.  We have a good bakery nearby for instance, or cheap grass fed butcher.

We were however, thinking to just bring cold meat and salad to save the hassle of bbq'ing :)

Either way we're looking forward.

Cheers,
De'ana and Mark

If everyone now wants to skip the BBQ we can just all bring enough food for ourselves and meet at the botanical gardens - probably the nicest if we don't need a BBQ.
Easiest landmark might be to just meet at the base of the Shrine of Rememberence  - along St Kilda Rd - near the gates O/F that Deb mentioned.

De'ana and myself are happy to catch up anytime either with the group as a whole lot in smaller numbers.  We're also happy to visit others or if people want to head down edithvale way we're a few minutes walk from the beach and can scrub up the bbq area :)
If anyone is planning with and the house of whatnot let me know if you want a hand I'm unskilled but willing to pitch in

Cheers
Mark

Ps. Deborah was saying someone was house sitting in romsey sometime

Just jumping in to say hi! I'm Cath, hubby is Al. New to the forums, but been a MMM fan for a while now. We think we're about five years off FI (we'll be 45), though we might transition earlier with some part time work. I'm in the process of extricating myself from a retail biz I no longer have any passion for and resent the time it steals from me... timeline is six months max on that, allowing me to go back to work I can do from home a couple of days a week, cannot wait!

Would love to meet up with some like minded folks, though looks like we just missed one! We're in Sunbury with two mini mustachians.

We've spent our Easter break up at the Grampians in a cabin at a school camp set up - hope everyone's had a great Easter!

Hey guys nice to see you on the forum.

De'ana and myself would be happy to catch up with you anytime,  Sunbury is the opposite side of the city though to us !  Perhaps somewhere central would be good.   The botanical gardens worked quite well last time,  we just bought along a packed lunch each.  Gives the kids space to!

Anyhow,  we're open to any suggestions and most times.

Cheers,
Mark

Sounds good Mark - botanic gardens work for us.

Looking forward to hearing when the next catch up is - be great to meet some likeminded folks... both sets of our parents are supportive, but most of our friends think we are depriving ourselves in the most awful way.  Don't think they believe me when I tell them I've never been happier!

I am. :) Welcome to Victoria and hope to see you at the next meetup!

There is no official policy for scheduling meetups :)

It just waits until there is enough momentum for people to catch up and start organising one.

It would appear with the new interest of recent additional Melbournites that there may be enough momentum now? Let's agree at least that there is interested then we can focus on the remainder of the post which will attempt to work out when and where.

De'ana and myself are keen to meetup anytime, although we're busy this Sat night (keeping it Mustachian by going to a friend's place for dinner :) )

Before the weather get's too much colder and drives most sane people inside perhaps we should get out to the gardens sometime in the next few weeks?

Either that or if someone can host?  I know a lot of people tend to be either city side or out west, and we're happy to travel !

Thoughts anyone?

Sounds like a good idea, although I'd probably suggest somewhere with an inside option as a plan B (or as a plan A).
Title: Re: Melburnian Mustachians? (Australia)
Post by: kaetana on May 11, 2016, 03:48:29 AM
I'm happy with the gardens again, and maybe our plan B could be lunch somewhere close? I would host, but I live too far from the city to be convenient! Maybe someone who lives closer will chime in. :)

Does the botanic gardens in the city have an inside option? I'd love to meet up soon, how is everyone with 28/29 May?
Or alternatively does anyone have any suggestions out west?

Suggest away then alsoknownasdean :)

I'm not so in love with the city that I can think of anywhere.

the 29th is better than the 28th for us but should be able to make a lunchtime thing on the 28th I guess.

Yes! When and where? How long will you be in town for?

Yay!

We will be here (or close-ish, in a town called Romsey) until mid-August, but have some stuff going on in August, so preferably before August 4th.

As for as when/where (time).. Literally anywhere/anytime.  Our schedules are wide open for July.  :)

A general "Mustachian" meetup to get together and chat with a big group would be fun, but getting even more specific, in addition the wife and I really enjoy board games and/or card games.  If anyone else does, and would be willing to host, we'd be happy to order some takeout (delivery..idk what you guys call it here) food if you're [the generic "you," not singling you out specifically, kaetana] would be willing to host us for an evening of games!  (We love Pinochle for card games, but play most anything, and play many board games, Dominion being a recent fav, but up for learning anything too.  Also we've been wanting to learn to play D&D, if there's a patient GM out there.)  We could also host, if you're willing to drive to Romsey and bring the game(s); Ali can cook.  :)

That aside, we're definitely interested in a general meetup (whether or not anyone is interested in a game night), so anyone interested please chime in!  :D

I LOVE board games and have a whole bunch of them, including Dominion. I would also love to host, but I might live a bit too far away for others to want to come. I live in Wyndham Vale.

I'm happy to go somewhere and bring some games, but we're going to Thailand in the last two weeks of July and so I can pretty much only do next Saturday. Is that an issue for anyone?

Woo, I'm so glad I asked then, I almost didn't!

Next Saturday will work for us!

Maybe someone will volunteer to host, or we can do a more general "Meetup" on Saturday afternoon or evening and games the other time slot, if you can squeeze it?  Does your husband play games as well?

We're also available weekdays/weeknights and/or other weekends in July if anyone else is interested in games or meetups, or can't make next Saturday but still wants to do something another time.  :)

To be honest, we're a little isolated out here, and would love to hang out a many times as possible with people.  ;)

Works OK for me, although it might be hard for some if there's no public transport out that way.

If not, I'm sure there's a bar in or near the city with board games. :)

Hey Dean! Arebelspy and his wife actually came over today and we had lots of fun playing a board game! Not that I'm not happy to host again, but maybe we could meet in the city next week so that it's more central for everyone.

Not sure if it's quite warm enough for another time at the Botanical Gardens, although that was nice last time. I suppose we could go to a restaurant in Chinatown or something?

Yeah that'd work, or maybe a largish cafe with enough seating space (there's plenty of those around). Depends on the time of day, really. A cafe might work perfectly if everyone meets at 2pm or so, but not if it's later.

I agree that the CBD area works best given we have people from all around the place.

Hmm.. that's somewhat tempting.  Thanks for the heads up!  :D

As for next Saturday, the 16th, we're up for whatever/wherever, as long as there's (preferably free) parking, (or perhaps we can park somewhere nearby and carpool with someone into the city?).  :)

You can also take the train into the city. I never drive in - I hate driving in the city and don't want to pay parking. Maybe you could drive to the nearest train station and take the train the rest of the way in? http://ptv.vic.gov.au/ will show you which train(s) to catch.

Hey arebelspy, we've been talking about this in the Melbourne Whatsapp group. A few suggestions for a venue that have come up are the NGV, Seven Seeds, and Auction Rooms. Happy with any of those. Any preference? In any case, I'm still game for Saturday!
Title: Re: Melburnian Mustachians? (Australia)
Post by: arebelspy on July 14, 2016, 12:40:27 AM
Any of those are fine.  :)

What time were you all thinking?

If we're doing something in the main part of the city (where there's no parking), we'll probably drive to Gisborne and take the train into Southern Cross station, per your suggestion above.

Is anyone else interested besides AKADean?  If not, we could always meet at your house again, if you're willing to host again.  :)

Sounds like that works for him too?

Is that an issue for anyone?

Works OK for me, although it might be hard for some if there's no public transport out that way.

Or are there other people on the Whatsapp that haven't chimed in here?

How was your meet up? I didn't see this until much too late :(

Arebelspy  (and anyone else) me and hubby would be happy to host at our small house, maybe a weekend arvo BBQ? The only games we have are Cards Against Humanity and Monopoly but my hubby is a home brewer and I think has two different brews ready to go he'd be happy to share.

I live out in the west, same area as kaetana although we have not yet met up!

We are free as birds this weekend and next if anyone is keen?

Bumping this--we're flying into Melbourne on Jan. 12.

I don't know how long we'll be there, or where we're staying, or where we'll head next.

It was just the cheapest flight from SE Asia, so it seemed like a good stopping point to see either Sydney or NZ.  Also I won't lie, the delicious Chinatown calls to us.

Anyone up for a meetup Saturday, Jan. 14?  :)

Hello, I am reviving this thread as I just discovered it existed through the Mustachians Australia FB page! I couldn't find this because I was searching for Melbourne, but the subject is Melburnian!!

On the FB page I think there were 2 other people interested in a Melbourne catch up, add me - I'm wondering if anyone is interested in another catch up soon, I would love to meet some other Mustachians in person!! When I say soon, who knows how long it would take to get something off the ground, so I thought might as well start gauging interest now?

Cheers :)

I live up in Woodend and don't get into Melbourne that much. But I can catch the train down for a meet up :)

We could have it at Mt Macedon, depending on where people are coming from. Or the Melbourne Botanic Gardens.

In Sunbury here, would interested in coming to one. Camping near the Grampians this Easter, so maybe the next one for us :)

We are in South Yarra so Botanic Gardens is an easy ride. Not that the location has to be near us :)

Will know our schedule for Friday in the next day or so.

Would be great to meet.

Friday is the day after tomorrow. Are we meeting, and if so where? And when? Lunch?

Hello! Sorry I asked the initial question about meeting up, then looked back a few times to see no answers and then totally forgot to check back till now! Wow go you guys if you end up meeting up Good Friday, that is quick organising! I will be away though so will have to try next time (I have also kind of started a thread on FB where a few people are interested - might be some of you here!)

Nice to see a few people from Macedon, Woodend, Sunbury...my family will hopefully be visiting Gisborne next weekend to begin to check out if we might like to move there! My sister is moving to Woodend and I am looking for somewhere to move from Melbourne and speed up our FI by about 5 years (at least) and thought well why not follow her! :)

I assumed no given the discussion went quiet. Have made plans but my wife and I are definitely up for something in the near future. If tomorrow doesn't go ahead perhaps we pick a Saturday in early May?

Sorry, thought that by replying I would receive automatic notifications of responses. oops! Anyway, I'm still keen to meet up. I've already FIRE'd so have a lot of free time; although I do volunteer work Tuesdays, Wednesdays and some Sundays.

Just to throw a date out there is anyone free Saturday 13th of May? I am able to meet up in the city or inner north-west (unless everyone who says they are free and wants to meet up is in Sunbury/Macedon/Gisborne/Woodend as if that is the case I am happy to go out that way!)

I should be OK for that day. Depends on if any kids' birthday party invites hit the fridge in the next week or so!

I'm out the 13th now. Have family coming to visit. The next few weekends after that I'm bus with volunteer work but am available after that (at this stage).

Mid week meet ups are also a go for any fellow retirees out there. Up my way is absolutely spectacular at the moment with autumn colours really kicking off. The 'Avenue of Honour' in many towns up this way are lovely. For example, Mt Macedon's is near the train station and looks fab:

I can throw in a thermos of coffee and/or tea and I'll bake something tasty. We can stroll and enjoy the sights.

Looks lovely Todge! Well I may try Facebook to arrange a meet up as I think it's easier for people to get notifications rather than have to come on the forum and check if anyone has replied. Are u on Facebook/on the Mustachians Australia page at all?

Sweet! Yeah I just found it a month or two ago! It's pretty cool, like if you post a general question or comment there you'll get some good responses as it just pops up in people's news feed as opposed to having to make the specific effort to check here and come across an Aussie based question! :)

Hey all,

You guys still thinking of meeting up? I'd be interested.

PS -- who do you guys use as an online stock broker?

Hey seranade.  I'm always interested in meeting up,  but it seems hard to build momentum.  Some have suggested Facebook is easier  *shrugs*

Either way,  I am currently using IG for online brokerage.. but it's US stocks selection is somewhat limited, or maybe I'm just always after things which aren't typical, who knows.

I hear that CMC markets is very popular.  *shrugs*

I'd be interested in hearing what you decide upon.

I am going to be in Bendigo next weekend, and I'm happy to come to a meetup.

What say we meet on Sunday 16th July for lunch at Juicy Bao (never been there but Trip Advisor says it is the best dumpling restaurant, and it is cheap) 178 - 190 Little Bourke St. - say 11:45?

I can't make it this Sunday. I could make the week after. I'll be in the Grampions. :(

And I agree, I think having a Melbourne FB page would make coordination easier, I'm sure!

I live in Canberra and come down every so often, so it's this Sunday or not for me. I'm happy to meet whoever comes.

Yeah we're still good for this Sunday Deborah.

We live in West Melbourne now so we can also make some time the following weekend Seranade.  We have a friend's engagement party on Sat night,  but otherwise free.

There is an existing Facebook group.  Mustachians Australia.  You should join if you haven't already I guess :)

Cheers,
De'ana and Mark

I've been posting occasionally for years now but only just found this thread. Exciting to see a few others are also in the Macedon Ranges area - so beautiful around here (and the house prices are good for the stash!).

Will keep an eye out for the next meet up.

Well now, fresh blood here on Mustache forum, trying to revitalize this thread.
Melbourne area ... summer (if one may call it this way in Victoria) is approaching. Should we try to plan a day out in nature and share some Investing / Retiring Early / FIRE strategies?

Let me know if you do. I list all upcoming Australian financial independence / Mustachian events on a weekly enewsletter at https://www.frugalityandfreedom.com/category/australian-fi-weekly/

There is a regular Melbourne group that meets and is listed on here.

Perfect. Include me in the group and tell me what should I do.
As far as I understand there is a FB for Melbourne group of people:
- Mustachian Australia
- FI Meetup Melbourne
