We're having so much fun in Moab right now, I thought I'd start the discussion for next year!!!!
-
As per usual, this meetup has no official beginning or end. You can arrive/depart whenever you’d like! Don’t let the 10 day length deter you. You are totally welcome to choose whatever dates work for you! :)
-
Reserved.
-
Yay!
-
You know I'll be there!
-
Yay! We don’t know what life will look like a year from now but we’d love to be here again!
If we’re sticking with October dates, as a not-yet-FIREd person, it was nice when the meetup fell over Columbus-Indigenous-Peoples’-Canadian-Thanksgiving-Day. Just saying’…

Aaannnd....we already have a hike planned for the 2025 meetup! @vector and @arrow will lead a hike up to Funnel Arch! They found it to be "very technical" and said that a rope might come in handy, so.....
-
Getting in line. Hopefully I'll be there next year.
lining up too
-
Health allowing, the Emboks are in. Hopefully we can do some hiking next year!
-
I hope to make it next year!
-
'Hoping to be there. Also hoping to travel by some combination of bike and train, unless either my wife comes along or I carpool with another BC MMM'er.
-
Getting in line. Would love to attend.
-
So sorry to have missed this year, hopefully next year will be golden.
-
Ha! I have already mentioned this to DH as a goal.
- I'll be retired!
- We have a camping van, but he's not as gung ho about camping anymore. :( So maybe a hotel.
Awaiting more info!
-
Here's more info: It's fan-fucking-tastic! You should go. While many people don't balk at all-day hikes, there are plenty of others who have sussed out all the fun, non-strenuous activities to do, or some combination thereof. Meeting so many like-minded people is an amazing experience.
-
PTF. Since I just returned my rental car and am still in Calif I guess I won't make it to the 2024 moab meet up so maybe next year.
-
I'm certainly in. It's only 3.5 hours by car so I definitely have no excuse! Also, I'm committing to staying the whole time next year. And to playing some music if we can get a few more people to play as well.
-
Very much hoping to join the festivities in 2025!
-
My DH and I were among the least physically active attendees this year, due to some health issues, but still had a great time. Here are some non hiking things you can do in Moab (because we did them):
We took a jet boat ride; walked around downtown Moab; admired artworks and tourist tat for sale.
We had some great coffee at Moab roasters and at The Garage; had some great meals at the food trucks court, the Blu Pig BBQ, the Broken Oar (fancy, with great company), and La Casa at The Lazy Lizard, courtesy of the Mustachians in residence there who welcomed all to a fab potluck.
We read the history of the Powell expedition down the Colorado River at the Moab information center and looked at some local artists’ paintings.
We toured Arches Park National by car and had a lovely long picnic with the Diceys, who also introduced us to the local thrift shop, WabiSabi.
We sat by the pool one afternoon, and I got in enough to cool down.
We went to the campfire with the larger group most nights, attended the ice cream social, roasted marshmallows, and generally hung out.
We collected some stickers for our computers.
We sat in the sun and did a bit of work.
We walked around town and looked at houses and buildings.
We drove out up the Colorado River route to see the Red Cliffs Ranch and enjoyed the drive.
We enjoyed the photos of hikes others took, and their tales of adventures.
Best of all, we met new folks who are great, and old friends who are also great.
It was a blast, even though we had a less active time than most.
-
^Indeed!^
-
If I quit my job in time, maybe I'll go. :D
I think I must have driven through Moab on my 2017 road trip, but I can't even remember.
-
I'm in, hopefully in a cabin by air this time, WITH MY PEOPLES.
-

I think I must have driven through Moab on my 2017 road trip, but I can't even remember.
It's kind of a jog to the south, so it's kind of easy to miss if you came across on 70. Worth the detour!

I'm in.. Just wondering what other creative ways there are to get/stay there?.. Anyone need work done on their rigs?..:)
HRH has just bought $500 tickets to go see the Eagle in concert in Las Vegas.. Gotta watch those pennies don't ya know..;)

The Eagles put on a great show. At least they did in the mid-90's Hell Freezes Over tour. They are all 20 30* years older now!
*How possible?

Well, not all of them. Some of them didn't make it that long. :( I saw them around 2009. It was a great concert.

Maybe if it is at least this early. But we also have my niece's wedding next October.

Glad to see so much interest in the 2025 meetup!
I see that the Indigenous People's holiday falls on Oct 13 next year. So, to make things easier for working folks who get that day off, I'd like to incorporate that day in the meetup. Also, while several people felt like 7 - 8 days was the right length for the meetup, I for one did not get to do all the thing that I wanted to do, so I'm considering making it a bit longer next year. Of course, as usual, folks can arrive/depart whenever they want. Another consideration is the weather. While I personally suffered a bit from the heat at this year's meetup, a storm system started coming in on Oct 16 (and as I write this from SW Colorado, we are getting a cold rain which means snow in our mountains), so I'd like for the Moab meetup to wrap up before the wintry weather hits.
SO......I'm thinking of Oct 3 - 13 for next year's meetup (with a possible afterparty Oct 13 - 16), but would welcome feedback and comments!
-
Good luck predicting the weather! I'm working on the dates for next year's other event. We hope to be there the whole time for once.
-
Hmm...my kid has the 2nd off, and the 20th off. I'd really like to bring the hubs and the kiddo. So, if we think about flying out on the 2nd and back on the 6th, he only misses 2 days of school. Short trip for us, though maybe we can fly out together and fly home separately so that one of us (hint: me) gets a longer trip.
-

Hooray for early Moab again! An Oct 3 start aligns nicely with my Grand Canyon dory plans. I'll have 6 days to wander around in between the two events. Just about perfect.

Let me know if you plan northern AZ - can meet up with you or drive if you fly into PHX! Was thinking same - except Canyonlands - may do it on the way back. So if you've already done it - fly out of SLC??
-
Following! We should be comfortably living in our bus by then, and working our way back to Utah valley for yearly checkups and such.

PTF. I was told to clear my calendar for October 2025...
I really hope to make it again!
-
I will be there.. I might be staying off bicycles just to make sure.
And probably Amtrak too..:)

Hah.. You guys just CAN'T leave it alone can you?..:)
Quick summary..
1) walked up and down the platform at Green River for 40 minutes trying to out-run the mosquitos!
2) There are NO bathrooms at GR... But there are no people either so the railroad tracks became the "tree".
3) They have manual lights for the platform controlled by a timer switch.. Ooh, something to play with!.. The lights also attracted the mosquitos!
4) Heard train in distance.. Hauled pack onto my back.. The train was approaching at speed, wasn't sure the driver was going to stop (I nearly said "engineer" but that far too offensive to those of us who are. Then again I can't drive a train either). I stuck my thumb out in case said driver decided it wasn't worth stopping.. I was the only one after all..:)
5) Can I check my bags?.. Nope!.. But you can in Sacramento.. OK.
6)Nothing.. Nothing.. Coffee brewed at seat.. Nothing.. Instant noodles at seat.. nothing.. slept not bad.. More nothing.. some scenery.
7) Some kind of commotion, mutterings about some drunk guy downstairs.. "guy is hassling some ladies".. OK time to go downstairs to "check on my luggage".
8) Said drunk/beligerant guy hanging over the seats occupied by young ladies with horrified facial expressions.
9) Guy sees me giving him the "direct gaze".. "Hey bro whats going on".. OK his attention is now turned away from said ladies.. I feigned a friendly conversation as I sized up how aggressive he might be..Not at all.. He was "friendly drunk" being annoying. Just then the conductor showed up, obviously alerted by other passengers from upstairs.
10) pulled into Roseville where he was ushered off the train for the smoke break.. Conductor asks if I know him.. Fearing I might get turfed off the train as well.. I'm like heck no! I'm just keeping an eye on him... Much muttering between 2 conductors about leaving him at Roseville or letting him back on to Sacramento.. They let him back on.. Oh great now I get to deal with him.. And yes I had a new "best buddy" following me through the tunnels at SAC train station.. Great!
9 hour layover at SAC was kinda fun (albeit too long).. Details on the Whatapp Group.. Involved 2 crazy people, a prostitute (who did offer me a discount), McDonalds (Trump wasn't there), a boat on fire, street Salsa dancing (I made new friends) and cars that jump up and down!
11) Boarded train in SAC, sat next to young man and gave him the FIRE schpeel @FIFoFum will be proud..:). Got in trouble with conductor for talking loudly during quiet time.. oops.
12) Didn't have two seats to myself so moved to the observation car where I slept across 3 seats.. Slept good and was not disturbed.
13) rest of trip uneventful.. Met by HRH... She really does exist!
14) train stopped swaying 2 days later..:)
Will I do it again?.. Not incredibly likely.:)
-
I want to hear more about the FIRE schpeel. Was he convinced? :D

Sounds like the most excitement you’ve had since you finished working!

@deborah Its an experience I can say that I would not have experienced if I had driven or caught an airplane. Jury is out on how "good" the experience was however..:)
-
Only 345 days!!! :)
-
Ha ha ha, that was a great description of your Amtrak experience. Sorry about the mosquitos!
-
SO was surprised about the mosquitoes at Green River. So I looked it up, and it’s definitely a thing! I also found out that the top five countries in the world for mosquitoes include Australia, which surprised us both. I’ve definitely not had problems with mosquitoes at the vast majority of places I’ve visited here, and certainly would count other places overseas as more buggy. However I do remember one never to be forgotten day tour to some bit of coast, where I started counting the number of mosquitoes I killed with each slap. I think the record was eight.
-
Frank, thank you for checking out Amtrak as a viable option for getting to Moab & providing this most excellent report. Sounds like a trip the rest of us should avoid. The Amtrak part, not Moab.

That reminds me of this fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm:
https://www.storyberries.com/fairy-tales-seven-at-one-blow-by-brothers-grimm/
Personally, if there's a damn mosquito anywhere, I'm the one that finds out first. A week ago Sunday, we visited our new neighbors. The bought an abandoned property and they've been clearing it out. They mentioned mozzies were a problem, and were they ever right. I came home with seven huge welts that itched like murder for over a week!

Agreed, although my Amtrak adventure did provide an opportunity for much mirth and entertainment.. Mostly at my expense!
These Moab attendees are brutal when they find a victim...;)

So, are we on for Oct 3- 13? Cuz black friday sale is LIVE, according to my email!
YES!!!
For folks who did not receive an email from the campground, Google Sun Moab Outdoors Downtown and the Black Friday announcement should be on their site.
-
Hi friends,
I just spoke to the manager at Sun Outdoors Downtown Moab.
Here's what I learned:
Cabin 96 is available and is also dog friendly. The rest of the cabins are only booked through October 5th.
Once you have your reservations (using the BF Code), please LMK.
They will group us together under MMM. At that point, your lock fees and the hated resort fee will go away. They will try to assign us the way we did last year, so we all have a clear path to the bathrooms, and the campers will be close to the group site. If anyone does NOT want to be moved, please LMK via What'sApp, or here.
The website is being wonky today. They're working on it. When you can book, take any site you can in your desired category and they'll adjust later. You do not need to pay the lock fee, unless you want to be somewhere specific (like away from the rest of the group. We love our introverts, too.)
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, everyone!
Kind regards,
Dicey
-
Wow—you are amazing!!!!! 🤩
-
Moonpie and I are in. Since the cabins were all booked up for the 3rd and 4th, we booked for Sunday the 5th through Friday morning. Please appeal to any higher authorities for no hurricanes.

Different location and time of year, but maybe some of the Moab folk would like to gather in late may/early June in the PNW? @FIFoFum and I have been talking about doing something like this for a long time, so I thought I'd put the idea out there.
https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/anyone-interested-in-a-potential-pre-or-post-camp-mustache-thing-in-the-pnw/
Location is a bit farther from Seattle than the real Camp Mustache, but also closer to BC. Plus, they have alpacas!

ONLY 277 DAYS.....

I can hardly wait!.. My "Rolladex" swells from each Moab visit.. On Friday I got to meet Pete (Yes THE Pete!) in Longmont and borrow his mig welder... :)
This was during a Moab follow up job to replace the headlight lenses on Amanada's (not on the forum) Toyota Prius. We did the job in Pete's driveway who lives next door.
She then threw a most wonderful party where I got to meet a bunch of the Longmont folks. DW (HRH) arrived to pick me up from the party and started having great conversations herself.. Who knows, maybe she will come to Moab too?..;)
Good times.
-
WOW!!!!
-
Yes my MIL's house is a mere 8 miles away from the Longmont mother ship.
Who knows, depending on how much Medicaid has to be paid back, we might end up owning a house there..;)
-
Wow, that is quite cool!
-
The coolest!
-
I have no doubt they'll be telling Frank stories for a long time to come. What did you weld?
-
I have no doubt they'll be telling Frank stories for a long time to come. What did you weld?
"Frank Stories"? I'm sure they barely noticed my presence..;)
Nothing too fancy.. I needed a fine thread 5/16ths bolt.. Actually 24 threads per inch. The funny thing is, where I live the local hardware store has these bolts in almost any length. But in Longmont/Berthoud.. Oh no! Despite NAPA having such a 1 inch long bolt on their website, it turns out they do not exist anywhere.
Now there are a number of farms in the area and old farm equipment will feature this bolt so we were surprised they made like hens teeth!
Now HRH stopped by the soon to happen party to drop off beer (priorities) and showed me the only bolt she did manage to find... i.e right thread but much too long.. After some muttering about how I could make one if I had a handy LATHE!!! I got the bight idea that a long bolt (with an unthreaded portion) could be made shorter by welding a nut onto the bolt shaft, just leaving a 1 inch stub of thread sticking out.
Now who did I know who had a welder and a few old nuts lying around? Worked perfect and MIL's lawn tractor now works after its 2 years as "yard art"!
The lawn tractor is grateful even if MIL isn't..:)
A fuller description of the day's events can be found here:.. https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/journals/humble-renaissance-man-)/6500/

Dude, you are one smart, practical mensch. Hens teeth, indeed.

In order to complete my year end task list, I'm updating the Moab list. I'm going to show who I have, but not batsignal them, because I've got their info. If you're NOT on this list and have a reservation at Sun Outdoors Moab Downtown, please get your details to me asap! Use WhatsApp or send a PM. I can't make the dreaded fees go away if I don't have your deets!

Just curious, is it possible to get in on this shin dig or have all the spots been claimed? I've been to lots of FI events and have made some great friends, I'd love to meet some of y'all from here too.

Well, there is a fee but that can be reduced if you grovel a lot!...:)

Hi Dicey, we have reservations for part of the week as well. 😊

Well he serious part of my reply didn't get included.. Weird.
There are two official accomodation options.
1) At Downtown Moab Sun Outdoors. There might be some campsites available.. Pretty spendy but @Dicey can get us a deal so best to connect with her. The unofficial way is to connect with somebody thats going and share their reservation. A number of us sleep in vehicles so if you have a tent I suspect you might have better luck with this approach. In theory extra vehicles have to be parked in the overflow parking lot, but this does not seem to be strictly enforced. I am already squatting on somebody else patch so I can't offer to share a spot.
2) At the guest house known as "La Casa".. I have no idea who books this house or if there are spare rooms available.. Last year folks were spending $50/night from memory, but I don't think it was full either.. Maybe someone @314159 @Holocene @becca can provide details on this option.
3) cabins at Sun Outdoors.. I believe these were all booked up back in October.
4) Stealth.. cough, somehow it all works out and one or two folks just turn up and we've always made it work in the last two years.. I just "showed up" in 2023.. Not a guarantee of course but heck if you're adventurous.. I might get ex-communicated from the cult for suggesting this!
There s a whatapp group where you should connect too, I don't know how to post the link here, maybe somebody can help?

I can hardly wait!.. My "Rolladex" swells from each Moab visit.. On Friday I got to meet Pete (Yes THE Pete!) in Longmont and borrow his mig welder... :)
This was during a Moab follow up job to replace the headlight lenses on Amanada's (not on the forum) Toyota Prius. We did the job in Pete's driveway who lives next door.
She then threw a most wonderful party where I got to meet a bunch of the Longmont folks. DW (HRH) arrived to pick me up from the party and started having great conversations herself.. Who knows, maybe she will come to Moab too?..;)
Good times.
Very cool! But I'm really jealous of the mig welder ;-).
So who was the person/people who rode their bikes to the last Moab meet up? @Chaplin or one of the other Canadians? If you were coming from North of Moab what route did you take?
-
WOW!!!!
RIGHT??

Part of my method is to be super nice to the staff at Sun Outdoors, mostly just by taking a few minutes to chat about their lives. Last year, a staffer mentioned his aunt & uncle used to live in my city. Then he clarified that they still did, but not in the house they had when he grew up. They sold it because the aunt has (now) end-stage dementia. She's in a specialized facility and the uncle lives in another senior facility nearby. He also mentioned he has a vintage RoadTrek. I gave him my contact info saying, "If you're ever in the neighborhood and need a driveway..."
Yesterday, he reached out by text. I told him my driveway was still available, then asked exactly where his relatives were. Yeah, they're right around the corner from my old townhouse. I visit my former neighbor there once a week. She's the 100-year-old badass who still lives by herself in her two-story home. If you follow my journal, you know we do the Sunday NYT Crossword together on Mondays. That's exactly where I was when I got his texts.
Since I'm very familiar with the neighborhood, I know a bunch of places he could stealth camp, even closer than my house. He is thrilled. I look forward to making his trip a little easier.
Just another slice of Moab Magic.

To add to @Exflyboy , I have a cabin for (searches email) Oct 3- Oct 11. The (loose, no tix yet) plan is to fly into SLC on Oct 2 with spouse and 13 yo (no school that day), spend the night in SLC, and drive down to Moab on Oct 3.
Cuz spawn has school, I figure it's okay for him to miss a couple of days (Oct 3, and Oct 6). That means spouse+kid will be flying home on the 6th, and I will thus have a cabin alllll to myself from Oct 6 to 11th.
This is *very* loose, but you know - stuff like this means there will be space. Cabins sleep 4. But there's only one parking spot. We haven't quite figured THAT out yet, bcuz likely we'll have to rent 2 cars since we are going back on different days. Might have to pay for overflow parking.

I didn't make it to Moab 2024, but I'm hoping to go in 2025, and preferably by bike. I'll probably aim to one direction by Amtrak. I've looked at routes and the options from the PNW aren't great, but perhaps bike down the coast to northern California, then Amtrak to SLC, and bike from there to Moab. It will depend on how much time I'm willing to take... Coming from the north would look a lot like doing the first half of the Great Divide again and while that's an amazing route, I'd like to try something new rather than repeating.

Geez, you're amazing!
Or instead of getting off in SLC, stay on the train and go to Green River which is a mere 50 miles North of Moab... I mean I can see how that might not be enough exercise for you though...;)

Going thru the desert for such a long time at that time of year would be difficult for wimpy me (The sun! It burnssss usesss preciousss) so I'd have to go another route too if I went. Thought going out of Wyoming, Montana or Colorado would be the best options then going back to Calif some other way (via rental car, train or flying) but didn't see good biking routes. I kind of like the idea of starting in Colorado and biking around there for a couple of weeks then heading (downhill!!!) to Moab.

Thinking a rental SUV or van for a month so I can bring my bike and "stuff" and that I can sleep in and use to see some other areas too before or after. Easy and no long distance biking thru the desert. Yes @Chaplin I am a wimp ;-).

OK, I'm considering it.
DH is unlikely to want to drive from NorCal to Moab. I can convince him to fly into SLC, and drive from there.
Is there an FAQ for newbies? If we want something hotel-ish, since we're not bringing the camping van...what would that look like?

Best FAQ is to read through previous year's threads. The @Embok's have a hotel they like that's close, convenient and fairly reasonable, IIRC. check out Grand Junction for flights as well.
-
Sandi_k there are tons of hotels within walking distance of the campground. Some of the best parts of the meetup are the campfires in the evening, so I highly suggest prioritizing being close.
You can also ask for access to the WhatsApp group, which how everyone self organizes hikes, meals, etc. It's a very informal meetup, so no hard agenda.
-
OK, thanks. I was checking out Google maps, the Downtown campground, and various VRBO options last night.
@Dicey - d'oh! Of course, I'll check out the prior thread.

There are hotels, and there's La Casa too. Check the prior threads on La Casa.
I've been doing my calculus on flying into various cities and driving, trying to figure out if SLC is better or Grand Jct. And husband wants to come, so do we split the week or do we have him+ kid come in for just the weekend? Kid is off school on Thurs the 2nd. So he'd have to miss a day. SO MUCH CALCULUS.
Prob SLC will win bc it's a single 2 hour flight.
-
We have flown into SLC, and we have flown into Grand Junction. For us, because we like to make stops, it’s about 3.5 to 4 hours drive from SLC to Moab, and about 2 from Grand Junction. All other things being equal, I prefer grand Junction, but we do whichever works in terms of timing and price when we can travel.
We like the Moab Rustic Inn, which is clean, family-run, and was last decorated circa 1957 in rustic pine. It requires an early check in as they close about 9 pm, and they have old fashioned real keys — and it’s easy to lock yourself out (no, we haven’t done that, but we’ve seen others do so.). There are many other, frankly probably better, hotels, but things book up early. The reason we like the Rustic Inn is that my husband likes going back to the same place every time once he has found an acceptable option. They have some kitchenette type cooking facilities in the rooms, and a very small pool. No hot tub.

Other RI benefits - 1. It's close to the Moab Public Library, home of Cosmos, the very cool tuxedo cat who runs the place. 2. It's close to the best thrift store in town - WabiSabi. 3. It's within easy walking distance of the best grocery store in town. 4. Best for last - it's within easy walking distance to Sun Outdoors Downtown Moab, aka Magical Moab Meetup HQ, site of the not-to-be-missed evening campfire and more.

'Hoping to be there. Also hoping to travel by some combination of bike and train, unless either my wife comes along or I carpool with another BC MMM'er.
Plans have changed so I'll remove myself from the list. I'll miss seeing you all, but I know you'll have a fine time.

You mean a mere 21 hours (plus a layover) from SAC to Green River by Amtrak doesn't whet your appetite?.. You get to interact with all kinds of "humanity" (whether you want to or not).. Its an adventure, especially in economy!..:)
There was me thinking that everybody would want to follow in my footsteps after Moab 24.. I mean I didn't even get murdered!..:)

Wah! I'll console myself with the thought that it's still early, plans could change again. Plus there's a very good chance we'll do it again next year...

Also, I am aware of an addition to the list, but am awaiting more details. Once I have that info, I'll shake the tree again.

It's hard to keep up with y'all from this side of the planet!
I only inquire because DW has to cancel the CC we prepaid with soon (we opened it for a sign up bonus and the annual fee is about to hit with no other reason to keep it open), and I'm not sure how that works regarding refunds.

In my limited experience, the CC issues refunds in such situations. They can't just keep your money.

I was in Moab this weekend--the weather was perfect!!
A friend and I hiked to a new-to-us arch in Arches NP today. It was really cool and we saw ZERO people on the hike. I suspect that very few people know about it as it is not listed on any park pamphlets. I only knew about it because a local mentioned it to me. Can't wait to share it with you folks in October!

For anyone who has any interest in the Magical Moab Meetup After Party.....
My preference would be to have the MMMAP at the Dutch Oven Group Campsite in the Needles Campground of Canyonlands NP. From this group campsite, the hiking possibilities are incredible--even for short hikes up on the nearby rocks with early morning coffee or dusk-ish happy hours or evening stargazing. Longer hikes beckon as well--out to Peekaboo, Druid Arch, Chesler Park, the Joint Trail, etc etc.
The After Party will be October 13 - 17. This site is released 6 months ahead of time. This means that on the morning of April 13 (at 8am MDT--but be ready sooner!), we need to be logged into the Recreation.gov website with this site cued up--ready to click on April 13 and again on April 17 and then on Add to Cart. (We then have ~15 minutes to complete the transaction.)
It would be amazing if many of you were willing to try to get this campsite--to increase our chances of making this happen--even if you are not sure you can attend the AP. You do need to be prepared for pay for the site, but I would immediately pay you back via Zelle or Venmo.
If you have any questions, you can post them here or shoot me a PM!
Gracias por todo!! :)

Hello new friends! A friend told me about this meetup and this thread.
I see all the RV sites are booked and only camp sites remain. I'll be there with my truck and truck camper (aka commuter vehicle and with a bunch of stuff in the bed) and my doggo.
While I don't mind paying for a tent site, and pitching a $20 Wal-Mart tent to convince the campground staff I'm actually tent camping,(truck camper hack) do the RV sites support a second (27ft) vehicle? If so, would anyone want to split the cost of an RV site? I'm setup for fully off grid, and need to dump and fill about once a week if showering elsewhere.
I'll likely attend the after party as well.
If someone could PM me an invite to the WhatsApp group chat, I would be grateful.
Looking forward to this!
-
You can totally sleep in your truck camper in a tent site. Nobody cares. There's just no hookups. I didn't think the RV sites are big enough for a second vehicle.
-
Yup, even get yourself a tent site and split that with somebody that wants to sleep in a tent... You might have to pay to park the additional vehicle in the overflow parking but even that has been proven to be somewhat flexible.
-
@Zadnak - Welcome! Please PM me your reservation info. We are banding together so that we can get rid of that hated resort fee and any lock fee you might have paid. We're still at high level negotiations (snirt), so you're not too late to get in on the savings. Please PM your IRL first name, 'cuz I'm the one who makes the nametags, too. FYI, doggos can use their real name or their screen name, whichever they prefer. Nametags are absolutely not required for anyone with more than two legs. In fact, they're not required for anyone, but they're damn helpful.
I don't have the first idea how to send a WhatsApp link, but someone in the group will. For now, you will find all the info you need on this thread. Last year's thread is chock full of helpful tidbits, too. There's a great packing list by our very own @NinetyFour, and a detailed list of our moment-to-moment plans. (There isn't one and hopefully never will be.)
@mm1970 is right, as long as we're considerate, they leave us alone. It is definitely okay to have a truck in a camping site. A tent is not required. We carry a cheapo yellow decoy tent with us and no one's ever had a need for it.
AFIK the RV sites can only accommodate a single rig. We've been known to hide a small car or three here or there and even a not-so-small Honda Passport, but 27 feet might be beyond our wizardry. Consolation prize: Tent sites can have campfires, RV sites cannot.
I was going to ping EFB, but I see there's no need...
-
@Zadnak Welcome! I just checked the campground for availability, I see plenty of RV sites available. Please double check you are looking at the correct location- Moab downtown. There are 2 other sunoutdoor locations in Moab. Good luck!
Agree they only allow 1 RV per RV site. The tent sites are more geared for passenger vehicles, so I don't think you'd fit in the tent sites at 27ft. Not sure in the rustic tent area since I haven't been to that area. Even the RV/Tent sites in the 99-106 row say up to 25ft.

Our astro van is just under 16' and barely fit inside the tent site parking space we had, a 27' rig will be quite a ways into the road and might be a real issue. Height should also be a consideration.
-
@Dicey - PM sent. Thank you!
@NinjaSue - You're right. It helps when I look at not the tent sites.
@2Birds1Stone - Valid point about height. I'm roughly 135 inches, so a little over 11ft. I'll keep this in mind. Thanks!
Waiting to hear back if I should book now or later to avoid the resort fee. The RV sites don't appear to be big rig friendly, so I think I can get away with another van to cohabitate a spot.

I really, really hate to do this, but I know we have several people who have travelled to this meetup from other countries. This is a first hand account of a German planning a thru-hike being forcibly detained and eventually deported despite having all the necessary documents:

Hi @Zadnak --glad to hear you are interested in joining the Moab Meetup fun! You should doublecheck, but I believe the campground has a very generous cancelation policy, so you might want to go ahead and book, as the campground can get pretty busy in October.
I will PM you the link to the WhatsApp group, if I can figure out how!

That is really depressing..:(.. Its also a good reminder why I chose to "upgrade" my membership (to full citizen) in 2018..

At this point, I'm very sad to say that none of our mustachian friends from other lands are planning to attend this year. I don't blame them, but I will miss them terribly.

I normally enjoy reading thetrek.co for thru-hiking related content but this is unnecessarily alarmist. TheTrek is not exactly a source I would trust for journalism related to such important decisions as to whether or not to travel to a specific country.......especially since this piece was written about one of their own writers. It's one persons alleged account of a situation. Not a single major media outlet ran with this story and it appears upon some digging that this chick was not exactly prepared for her B2 Visa interview at the border......sure the first two times may have been more lax as far as having the proper documentation, and yes maybe the current administration is giving people a harder time, but there's still millions of foreign tourists coming to the USA per month without any issues whatsoever.
So if someone is on the fence about coming to Moab from outside the USA, don't let an alarmist blog post by TheTrek dissuade you......

It was all of the other stuff that dissuaded me weeks ago. Whether this particular story is true or not, the situation has become less and less inviting as time has progressed. When I bowed out I didn't give any reasons as I wouldn't want this thread to join the others on the topic, but I would be very surprised if anyone from outside of the US, especially Canada, felt it was appropriate or wise to attend. I would have liked to attend for all the usual reasons: the great people and the great place.

The Venomous Spaz Beast and I booked the last relatively cheap tent site, for the duration.
@Dicey please add us to the list of attendees! I'll bring some (nonalcoholic) beverages to share.

I have got to make it this year. Got to put this on my calendar and plan some time off.

Yes, you do. You can always FIRE if they won't give you enough time off...The afterparty is pretty awesome, too!

As today marks exactly 6 months before our wonderful Moab meetup, I was finally able to get the reservation locked in for La Casa at the Lazy Lizard for the duration (10/3 - 10/13). So, if anybody doesn’t want to camp and instead wants to sleep in a real bed indoors, just let me know, we’ve got space for you for any of the days. It’s set up like a hostel with a good mix of bunk beds and full/queen beds, believe it sleeps at least 21 in beds, with two full bathrooms for us and a kitchen and living room. Last year only 6 of us ended up staying in La Casa, which meant we each had our own room, and it was about $50 per person per night. I expect that we can get more than 6 of us this year, so it should pencil out to less cost. And we will have a carpool set up for heading to the main group’s campfire meet every evening, so no need to have your own transportation.
-
An Australian recently got refused entry into the US because he took a common but slightly circuitous journey there with Cathay Pacific (Sydney to New York via Hong Kong is one that I've been offered by travel agents in the past and known a number of people to take). he was grilled about why he took it, and then sent back to Australia. He didn't get suspended.
As a result, I think any travel to the US is not going to happen for me in the near future.

Thanks for booking La Casa! Please remind @314159 to bring his smoking jacket to the campfire each evening! :D

If I can make it out again this year I will definitely join La Casa again!
Attendance is tbd with work schedule, likely will be another ~long weekend but not the full week~ situation at best. If I win an upcoming audition this June then I could have tenure by Magical Moab Meetup 2027 and then should be able to galavant off on vacation (:

I feel simultaneously seen and attacked, lol.
I lost my smoking jacket (in regular life it's just my everyday fleece jacket) when I left it on an airplane in Denver! I realized as soon as we got to the baggage claim and I talked with a worker. It sounded like it would all be worked out when I returned two days later but alas it was not and I never saw it again. However, I have decided to be proud of myself for letting go emotionally and not being too attached to a material object :-)
And please, we can barely plan our life one month at a time, much less six or twelve! But I will say nothing's come up yet so it does seem likelier and likelier we can make it as time goes on...

Reposting from a few weeks ago...(see below)
TLDR: I would love for us to snag the Dutch Oven Group Site at the Needles Campground in Canyonlands NP for the After Party Oct 13 - 17.
It will be open for reservation this Sunday (April 13) at 8amMDT.
We will have a better chance of getting it if several of us are at our computers, logged into recreation.gov
If you have not made a reservation on that website before, you might want to do a bit of practicing ahead of time.
If you are able to reserve it, I will reimburse you right away.
Please let me know if you have any questions. And thanks in advance!!

I love Lazy Lizard... I have never stayed there but they let you pay to just use their showers. It's like $2. After a dusty, sweaty summer hike in Moab that is the best value for $2!

One of the things I love in Moab is their awesome library, complete with Cosmo the cat. They have a resource center in the lobby that tells you where you can shower, do laundry, and a myriad of other services. They're printed out on neat little lists so you can just grab and go.

It’s just one site available, right? There’s no risk we book 3 sites when we only need one?

Yes, there is only one site called Dutch Oven Group Site at the Needles Campground.
Oh, darn--I just looked at it and someone else has already booked it!!! (Their reservation starts before the 13th--that's how they were able to do it.) Well, we can hope that they might end up canceling!! :(

I'm gonna take a couple personal days and make it. Would like to meet some MMM people I currently don't know anyone in real life.
I'll probably hike a bunch in the Needles and maybe camp out around there.
Probably going for the first weekend for 4 days total.
Looking forward to the hikes!

Awww yea.......looking forward to meeting you in person! It's great on the forums, but the connections we've made with MMM peeps in person have been something else.

hmmmm...this is the closest I have been to a meet-up. I think I could make it down for a few days on the weekend.

I was thinking back to my first Moab in '23.. Ooh that might be nice to go to.. I had met Pam in person so hey why not.
After Moab '23 I decided the only thing that would stop me from going to future Moabs was mortal injury!
Thankfully the mortal injury came in August '24 so I had enough time to heal and not scare anybody too bad with my appearance at Moab '24.
I absolutely could not imagine not going now. The rich deep conversations I got to engage in, together with some absolute nut cases @ToTheMoon, @NinjaSue I'm looking at you!
So yeah, there is no way I'm missing another one.. Mortal injury not withstanding!

You only looked like you had been mortally wounded, you weren't actually dead, fortunately. See you in Moab!

I don't know to what you are referring sir - I self-identify as being perfectly normal! :D

Also, you all are giving me major FOMO, and my current booking only crosses @Exflyboy for one evening, so that just won't do.
I will need to either commit to cancelling fully (but I have to call in and I have been lazy) or call to change the reservation...(see the lazy part) Decisions decisions!
-
@ToTheMoon You mean one evening in my "delightful" company is not sufficient to drag you down from a real democracy to take your chances at being thrown in a freezing cold detention cage for 3 months?
I thought I was more popular than that?.. We do have other nice people too..:)
-
I put in for Friday the 3rd and Monday the 6th off so I'll have the entire weekend.
Really looking forward to hiking and getting outside some. I love Moab. I'm thinking I'll go to Needles District a bunch since that is my fave.
Will be cool to meet some new people doing this FIRE thing. I'll swing by the group campsite/place where everyone hangs out.
I'll probably just car camp somewhere though.
I'm thinking I might rent a dirt bike and go all out and spend a little of this money I'm saving.

The first rule of the Magical Moab Meetup is there are no rules.*
*Okay, the NPS has rules like timed entries and permit requirements, but we're pretty good at working together to keep them manageable.
Glad you're coming!
