Madison WI November 8, 2014 Meetup at Noon
« on: October 20, 2014, 03:40:26 PM »
Hi Madison Mustachians,

We have the honor of having Jeremiah of the aquaponics guest article http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2014/10/20/aquaponics/ living in our fair city. I don't think that I'm alone in wanting to meet him. I was hoping that we'd be able to get together prior to the Thanksgiving insanity, although this could stretch to late November/early December.

I'm free anytime besides Monday nights. We should also figure out indoor amusements, because 1) gnats and 2) it's starting to get a little chilly.

Let's talk about dates, times, and activities.

UPDATE: November 8, 2014 at noon at 944 Dane St.

I'm down, though I don't have any recommendations for an activity at the moment.  Will return if something comes to mind!

Sounds awesome. With enough warning, I can make most evenings and most weekend days.

Maybe the best way to start the process is to ask people if they'd prefer weeknights or weekends. I think I'm partial to weekends.

Hi there,

Glad to find this group - love to meet you all.  Thanks for organizing CL.

I've got a 4-month old at home besides my job and small business, so time is tight.  I'll do my best to make it though.  Depending on the size of the crowd I might be up for hosting.

Cool - I'll try to attend too.  Live on the east side.

I would vote - but need specific days to know what works.

Thanks for organizing!

Poll was overwhelming in preference for weekend. Now reset it and have dates. Choose your top choice, and you can leave acceptable alternatives in the thread.

I will be in Madison the weekend of the 8 and 9th and would love to meetup with some mustachians in the area.  I am thinking the 8th would be best for me, but could make the 9th work.

What time/location were people thinking?

I'll keep the poll open for more votes, but I'm getting rid of some of the poll options without any love at all, including the day that Jeremiah says he's not available.

I was vaguely thinking of us doing a potluck lunch, if we could get a location. I'm open to other suggestions. Russ happens to be able to homebrew, and he's pretty good at it. I brought white wine to the second one, for those of us who like to have a sip with meals.

Fellow Madison resident here. It looks like there are a handful of us. I just created an account to post and vote (11/1).

Good to see you. If you can believe it, our October 2013 meetup was rather huge http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/madison-wi-meetup-october-25/, especially compared to our June and July ones. Thanks for chiming in.

Ha, I've been thinking that all day.

+1 Cromacster for bringing it up a level

I'm still leaving the poll open for the occasional Mustachian to chime in, but the middle finger of the six-fingered man is indicating that the 8th is preferred as of Oct. 23.

Hey guys,

The voting for best days has died down completely. 11/8 has won with 4 votes, since every other day is tied for second place at one vote. Let's meet at noon.

Let's start talking about what each of us will bring. Broad categories: beverages, salads (since that was a thing), entrees, desserts, etc.

Jeremiah has graciously agreed to host!

Works perfect for the wife and I!  We will be traveling from the twin cities that morning, so I can't bring anything that doesn't travel well.  I'll see if I can convince the wife to bake a tasty dessert.

Oooh, cromacster, are you heading back to MN after the meetup? A friend needs to transport a bike from Madison to the cities at some point. PM me if that could work. Timeframe doesn't matter exactly. I'm sure she'd contribute to gas. (actually, it's her brother's bike, he lives in the cities, he'd be the one to contribute $ :-)

The hubby and I will be there with a quinoa salad. That should be easy to fit in my backpack for the bike ride over. Looking forward to meeting all of you.

The Mercado on the corner has some awesome fajita stuff and burritos.  I'll have that with fixings, including some homemade salsa from the garden.

How does somebody sign up to go and what all typically goes on at an event?  I am not sure if I could make it yet, it is over 100 mile trip each way.

In this case, "signing up" just means saying you'll come and maybe bringing some food. In the past, we've gone to a bar or met at a park and chitchatted for a few hours. That's about all there is to it!

Previous commitment was just cancelled so I guess I'm in!!

I have a few bottles of homebrew berry wheat beer to bring, as well as various high-octane ciders. Also some food? I'll do soup, that's easy enough to carry. Jeremiah, I hope your street has some bike parking, seems like a good number of people will be riding ;-)

Quinoa is at minimum Latin American, since quinoa is from the Andes. I won't say no to cookies, though.

I love quinoa. If you decide not to make it, I will. Let me know!

And it's certainly appropriate for a Mexican/Latin themed event (if that's what we're having).  If in doubt, add extra lime juice.

Thanks guys. I think I will stick with the cookies, because the quinoa recipe I had in mind would definitely not go with fajitas. I will bring cookies, but I would be interested to hear about your favorite quinoa recipes on Saturday. I have only made it a few times.

I will be there, dog in tow.  So I will not be able to transport your friends bike.  Sorry.

No I'm not coming down for the marathon.  Just reliving my youth and meeting up with some friends for the Slipknot concert :)

Soup is on the stove, and my roommate just said it smelled good without being prompted, so that's a good sign I think!

food and/or beverages, or an aura so cheerful it makes everyone forget you didn't bring anything

pretty sure you could bring literally anything though and people would be happy, it's the thought that counts

Alongside Jeremiah's homemade salsa and my jalapeņo storebought salsa, senecando's salsa will give us a large variety of salsa. :) I think this is ok.
