Colorado Springs - Ongoing Meetups and Adventures
« on: September 20, 2014, 05:41:46 PM »
Hey all. So I know there are at least a few of us here in Colorado Springs, so I thought I'd leave this here to see if anyone was specifically interested in doing a semi-regular meetup? I figure we can do a tour of parks with grills, or whatever. I also know that there are some people who are relatively close (and a bit south), who want to meet up as well. Any thoughts, ideas, etc?

Just post here if you are in the area. Also, if you are just visiting and would like to arrange something, feel free to PM me. I'm always down to meet Mustachians, even if it's not a full on meetup.

Im in Co Springs now.  Moved here in August and have been loving the change.  I'd be interested in semi regular meetups.  New to the area so dont have much in the way of suggestions but the parks and grills idea sounds good to me.

Happy to have you!! I'm glad you resurrected this thread. Let's see who else is interested.

I'm not in Colorado Springs yet but thinking about moving there...it made it to my top 4 places. I plan on taking a 14 State tour looking for a new place to live. I should be in the area around the end of Feb/early Mar, it would be cool to meet up with some of you to pick your brains on the area. If you have any pros/cons about the area feel free to PM me. Thanks!

Hey DollarBill--just curious about the other towns that made your top 4.  I saw that Flagstaff made it.  Also, what are your criteria?  If, during your multistate tour, you come through SW Colorado, feel free to PM me and I will show you around.  If you are into hiking, skiing (downhill, backcountry, cross country, skate skiing), river stuff, mountaineering, you should check out my town.  Good luck with your search!

I just made this post about it. I didn't mention my top 4 because I wanted to see what people said. So far it's Austin, Tucson, Las Vegas, Colorado Springs...that's just the short list.

Been living in the Springs for the last year and I will be here for at least one more year. I didn't even realize this thread existed or I would have spoke up sooner.

Well, the good news is that I just recently acquired a Pit Barrel Cooker, which so far has made some out of this world whole chickens, ribs, burgers, smoke veggies, and the like. I live pretty close to Memorial Park, and could potentially take it over there. Only 'problem' is that it's a smoker, so everything is pretty low and slow (like 4-5 hours for ribs and the like). That would be a hell of a hangout. I've got a slackline as well, and I've attached it to some trees on the North side of the lake (I am very not good at that). I also know they have first come first serve pergolas too. Any thoughts?

So is that a total of 6 people already? 94, are you actually here in COS, or will that require a bit of travel?

Thanks for thinking of me, Jordan, but no, I'm way over in SW CO.

I'll actually be making a work trip to Denver in a few weeks, but will have no time to take a side trip.  :(

Thanks again.

Damn. I thought it was something like that. Next time I wind up in Durango/Pagosa Springs (there is an awesome hike => camping => natural hot springs we love), or that general direction, I'll hit you up.

For everyone else, how about Memorial Park on 10/1? I'll bring a slackline, and if it gets too crazy, we can head back to my place a couple of blocks away.

So tentative meetup date of 10/1. Who can make it?

Good start, and even if it's only one person, it should still be fun. Since I already have the Frugal FIRE calendar shared, I added it to there. No specific time as of yet, but feel free to RSVP to that event.

I haven't met any yet!  Not even sure the people here really exist!  :)

I've made plans to go to Chicago next month to meet several of them.  I'm sure hoping they are real, or else I will have a huge airbnb place to myself for 3 days!

Absolutely. We're going to be at the park. If we have enough people, I'll grab one of the pavilions, which are super close to one of the playgrounds.

Just made the following post in the specific 10/1 Meetup thread. Link here. That is primarily where I will be updating things as we get closer. I am going to leave this thread more general for a possible recurring thing, so feel free to pop over there. Since I planned ahead, but not that far ahead, I'll update in here too. I attached the picture of the general area I'm planning.

All right. I went over to the park and scoped out some spots last night. I don't know how many people we've got coming, so I won't head over super early and grab the pavilion. But there is a plethora of picnic tables over there. I was also going to wait to see the response before I made any other plans, but screw it. I've got a pork shoulder that is 2 hours away from being put on the smoker. I will pull it, and bring it over. I don't do BBQ sauce, so feel free to bring that, or bread for sandwiches, or veggies, or fruit, or whatever. It's not required by any means, and you are all welcome to hangout, eat the food, whatever. The pork will be smoked over mesquite, with an adobo/allepo rub. More savory than spicy, and I've had no issues with anyone thinking it's too hot.

I'm going to be over there between 12:30 and 1:00 (I'm shooting for 12:30), and we'll just hang out until we get bored or have elsewhere to be. I'll be wearing a headwrap of some kind and a Hawaiian shirt, but the easiest way to spot me will be by looking for the slackline (or some guy trying to setup the slackline). It's a red line, and it will be pretty close to the playground on the SW side of the park. I've attached a picture outlining the general area I'm planning. There is parking all along that section. If it's too crowded, we can always move, and I'll update this post if we decide to take a jaunt. South of the boathouse, North of the big playground. I know some people were thinking about bringing their kids, so I will do my best to make sure that the if they run to the playground, they can still be supervised.

See you all tomorrow. It's going to be fun!!

Yes, I live in Kansas City but I'd love to visit Colorado Springs again. I was just there a few months ago and loved it. Maybe since you all are meeting regularly, I could look you all up the next time I come through.

Don't sweat it economista. This thread is for ongoing adventures here in COS. Sucks that you missed the last one, but just keep an eye on this thread for the next one. I'm not 100% certain what it will be, especially if winter actually decides to come this year. Shoot, we're almost getting close enough that we could a New Years bash or something. :)

So I just got back from a little walk around pulpit Rock. I'm very seriously considering making 2017 the year for park picnics. Every couple of months, meet at some new park, have a picnic, maybe a bike ride or hike before it after. It's not like we don't have options here. What do you all think? We don't even need to wait until it gets warm, if we decided sledding would be fun (and we get real snow).

Let me know what you all think about this, suggestions for places, etc. My goal is to have at least a 3 week advance notice.

Count me in. I'm on the north side, so places like Palmer Park are easier for me but I've ridden down to Acacia, Monument Valley, and Bear Creek parks as well (it's the ride back up that gets you!)

I love to bike and hike. It's supposed to be nice Saturday so I was thinking of checking out Pulpit Rock; I haven't been there before.

I'm out of town between now and New Years, and out of town again on business in February.  In concept I'm down for some fun around the parks, but I'll have to keep you all posted on availability.

I so wish we had weather forecasts that go out a month. I have no idea what the weather is going to be like in January. Are you out all of February?

Oh yeah. I've always worked North of my house. I get the uphill stuff out of the way early. :) How'd you like Pulpit Rock? It's a fun little place. The better half and I were going to hit up Section 16, but wound up going to a trampoline place by the house. Holy crap I was sore the next day.

I have plenty of wood, especially considering I just ripped up a floor. Just in case it's snowy, does anybody know a park or somewhere with a fire pit? A bonfire would be nice if it's all cold and stuff.
Anyone have any favorite parks? I think I've hit most of them, but I pretty much get surprised every year with the awesomeness here.

I'm not sure what my availability is, but we're in the Springs now. Up in the Cragmor/UCCS neighbourhood. We currently don't really know anyone in town, so I think a meetup would be pretty cool. I'm basically posting to follow the thread. :)

Okay, this doesn't need to necessarily be outdoors, or Paris, or whatever, but how many of you are interested in a mid-january meetup, and what kind of activity would you like. It will definitely be on a weekend, but other than that, I just want to get a feel for who's down.

Sundays seem to be my most available day, though january is going to be a busy, busy month for me. I deliver pizzas, so more than likely if I'm free, it'll be morning/afternoon, and not dinner/evening. Midweek, I'm more often working during the day and free-er in the evenings. Otherwise, I'm down.

If I had a house, I'd say we should do a board-games/potluck thing, but alas, we're currently in a fairly small apartment.

Long-time reader, but rarely post! My husband and I would love to meet up sometime for a game night and pot luck. We are free from Wednesday - Sunday nights, but we do have a 9 year old with us half the time (depending on co-parenting schedule). We live near Southgate.

I can't host that many people at my house, so I'm probably going to wind up doing the park thing in March. If someone else wants to host, I'm down to show up, though. Pot luck with food does sound fun though. If someone wants to set it up, just make a new thread with the date, and post a link to it here.

Hey Peregrine--

Welcome to Colorado!  I'm over in the SW corner of the state, but I get up to the Denver area once or twice per year, mostly on work trips.

If you ever get over to my part of the state, be sure to let me know!

Hey 94,

I'll be heading to Durango in Feb/March (probably). Is that your general area? Would be cool to meet another real, live Mustachian.

I will PM you.

Unfortunately, this weekend doesn't work for me, but I thought I'd bump this just in case. Apowers is hosting a potluck later today. Check out the link to the thread. I'll see you all at the next one.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
