At this stage I'm thinking 29 November meetup would be good. Does that still suit as many people?

I think I'm good for the 29th. The only Saturday that doesn't work for me is the 22nd.

The 29th is the best possible weekend for me in the next two months. I'm glad everyone else seems to be the same!

Awaiting suggestions on what to bring.

Did a recce of the Queanbeyan "waterfall" area today and discovered that the BBQ area I was thinking of did not have any shelter nearby. As it was sunny enough when we last met and we are now getting into the warmer months, I don't think this will be acceptable for our group.

An alternative I came across today while walking my dogs is in my own suburb of Jerrabomberra, near the community centre. As pictured, there are (free) BBQs, covered shelter, plenty of free parking and a pleasant outlook of a duck pond. This area is about 250 m from the Jerra shopping centre, where public toilets and a Woolies can be found.

Unless someone comes up with a better alternative, I propose we meet there around 11:00 on the 29th then have a chat over a relaxing BYO BBQ lunch. If everyone brings whatever meat/other they want to BBQ and a salad or snack plate each I reckon we'll be set. For the super-mustachians amongst us, you can even catch and cook your own duck if you like! <jk> I can go down there an hour or so beforehand and secure the area. I may be habouring two beagles.

Is that OK with everyone?

Looks great Ozstache.  I think I'm OK for the 29th. Might make the long drive again, I've found it much more encouraging knowing the people "typing some stuff into the computer".

Is this the area marked as the John Palmer Park on Google Maps - between Firethorn Place and Jerrabomberra Parkway? I see the parking is off Jerrabomberra Parkway at the roundabout.

Yes, that's the spot. Parking is just below the red marker on the following map:

That's what I'm working on. I will probably bring a kg of cherries as well, as I am picking cherries from my tree each day at the moment.

Yes, 11 am was the time we agreed. I'll get there a little earlier to secure the table.

I suggest everyone brings something to throw on the BBQ, a few drinks, a plate/cutlery/cup for themselves and a small salad/fruit/snack to share between us. I'll bring something to clean the BBQ with, paper towel, oil, BBQ utensils, a few table cloths, serviettes, and some basic condiments (salt/pepper and tomato/hot sauce) for all to use.

Does anybody want a tomato plant or two? We've had about 30 self-seed and we are going to be overrun by tomatoes if I don't get rid of a few plants.

Its 7.30 and I'm up and showered i.e. I'm coming. I will bring a little gas burner and a small saucepan to make tea - hopefully theres some potable water.  BYO cup/coffee/tea/milk. I 'll bring some Earl grey and herb teas to share, but this selection may not be to your taste!

The meetup today was awesome - thanks very much Ozstache for cleaning the bbqs and organizing everything! You obviously deserve a masters in project management! The venue was great - meeting over the border was a raging success. It is amazing to see so many fishermen at such a small waterhole.

Someone suggested meeting in a couple of months. I had communication from someone suggesting Sundays would be better. How is everyone placed - Saturdays, Sundays, other? Early February?

Nice to meet you T.I.M.U :)
I really enjoyed myself and thought it all went off well. The more leisurely pace of a barbie was good: since I have a fair drive from a purely selfish point of view its more worthwhile to spend a few hours at a meet-up.

Couldn't help myself: had to calculate my fuel bill to attend: approx 500km return trip, at 5l/100km (probably less on the open road, thats my usual mileage) at $1.30l,  comes to around $30. For a day out with mustachians - you're worth it.

Hello Canberra crowd.

Thursday 18/12, deborah and I are looking at planning a day at Bowral.

Could you make it for that day?

Nice to meet you T.I.M.U :)

Ohh my car is useless in comparison. I can squeeze 10L/100km if I'm really lucky.

Yep, I've already got plans for 2 out of the 3 days of the long weekend. The other options should be fine, but depends on when we end up going down the coast with friends.

I had a fantastic free bbq a few weeks ago at the National Arboretum, just down from where the "Wide Brown Land" monument is. Although that might not be the best for the mustachians that ride out to these things (you'll have to work for that food)!

Just trying to get the ball rolling...

Although I will say. Guys, it's Canberra. Name a place outdoors and its probably going to be free, beautiful, and oddly underutilised by the rest of the town!

I couldn't give you a definite answer.

There are two bbq hot plates next to each other, and three tables/benches. Surrounding it there are adequate places for a picnic (we had an infant with us so had a picnic blanket out and all).

When we arrived there was a family there (who just wouldn't budge out of the perfect spot in the shade!), and about three more families passed us wanting our great location out of the sun in the hour that we were there. It's a great spot, but if it's 35C+ outside, take a picnic blanket because there's a bunch of trees surrounding the bbq area to sit under!
