It is much like herding cats sometimes.

I'm good with that time and location.

5 showed up.  I was hoping the west side of town could have made a better showing.

I'll be moving (with my wife) to Dallas in 2 months.  Any recommendations on good, affordable and safe locales in the area?  I'm open to anywhere really (I've looked at /considered Plano, Carrollton, and Oak Lawn).  I'd also like somewhere that is close to grocery stores and as bike-able as possible.  For groceries, that means Aldi and Asian grocery stores (H-Mart comes to mind).

Eventually, I hope to meet some of the folks here.

I would recommend locating near the DART rail.  As for as bike-able as possible, this is highly dependent on work location.  Richardson is ranked high for bikers.  It is pretty hard to find somewhere that is not in biking distance to a grocery store.  Plano has some good Asian markets near 75 and Legacy.

http://www.bikedfw.org/dfw-area-bike-trails.html

These are pretty generic criteria.  You might add some more criteria (general work location) and start a new thread.

-Edit-
I just saw your FIRE countdown, so I guess work isn't an issue.

Most importantly, where will you work?  That's the #1 determining factor for me in where to live.  Life's too short to sit in rush hour traffic

Thanks for the tips.  I'll look into Richardson.

Yep, I'll be FIRE/semi-FIRE for a while (going to try it out for a year at least if not longer), so I'm ultra flexible with area.  We picked Dallas area because its larger size (more amenities, larger airport), decent COL, and has lots of things that we like to do close by - I especially love all of the Asian food choices.

Our current plan is that come mid-October about, we'll to live out of an AirBNB for a few weeks while we find a place to rent.  I know it's a big place and my criteria doesn't narrow down things much but really a general idea of areas to avoid would be helpful.

Ditto of what Spot said ^. New to FIRE and MMM. Grew up in Lewisville, moved between there and Dallas and Denton from 18-25, and currently in Valley Ranch going on year 2. Will keep an eye out for the next meet!

Not sure if you are still looking for options. I live in Oak Lawn and didn't have a car for a year (rambling side story as to why I did purchase a lovely used one).  DART in the area is nice, but if you won't be working I'm not sure the cost off-set of rent in this 'hood would be worth while. Happy to help with other questions.

Thanks for this!  Plano sounds like it's a top option for us; just need to see what's available for housing in mid-October.

Thank you for this reply.  We just kind of have to wait and see what's available.

Also, for the sake of not derailing this thread, I'll PM either of you if I have any questions.  Thanks!!!

Welcome to the thread.

I think our next meetup should be downtown Dallas, near the rail or M-Line.

Also wanted to add: check out a neighborhood in Dallas called "Little Forest Hills".  It's an affordable place to live but also a very artsy and laid back community. It's an older neighborhood with beautiful old trees and old homes. It's a unique place.

I vote for a picnic in the park since the weather is lovely. Preferably one off a rail line or we could do something near the Margaret Hunt Bridge.

Oooh.  This is the first I've heard about this.

Have you been to this event before?  What's it like?

My SO is busy that morning, so if I go I'd be attending by myself.  If it's a pleasant, laid-back, chill event, I'd consider going by myself.  If it's a bit of a chaotic clusterfuck, I might just save the money and hassle.  I can always go riding some other time.

I'd be open to chilling at the public party though if there is significant interest.

I was doing Royse City to North Dallas and had to move closer.  There is no way I could do Rockwall to Fort Worth.

I'll be in Dallas for work 9th to the 14th. I get in around 2 PM on Sunday and have the whole afternoon/evening free if anyone is around?

Also happy to meet up for drinks/dinner near Addison any night Mon-Thurs.......I'm normal in person, I swear ;)

Any Addison knowledgable people have suggestions on locations?

Fan of Sunday here as well, Addison is quite a hike from south Grand Prairie and I spend 90-120 minutes at the gym M/T/Th/F.

I work in Addison and would be available to do a happy hour type thing after work. Sunday, probably not...wouldn't really want to drive over here and football, ya know. As for suggestions of places, whether I go or not...

Chuy's (free nacho bar thingy for HH, just buy cheap margaritas)
Houlihan's
Torchy's
Flying Saucer
Blue Mesa

I should be available on Sunday evening, after 5pm, and would vote for Flying Saucer although the other mentions work too (I believe Chuy's free queso bar is just weekdays, at least that's the case for the one on Knox). Also can drive/carpool with anyone if needed between uptown/park cities and Addison.

I’m ready! I’ll be diving up from Grand Prairie, so if anybody needs a carpool from that general area send me a PM (I’m near I-20 and Carrier).
