Hey all-
Pretty new to the site and forum. Any folks in Houston that would like to grab a beer/coffee and meet up?
I'm in Central Houston inside the loop but can travel a bit within reason...
-
Yeah I think it would be fun to have a meetup, especially if we could get the others of us in Houston to come on out and make it a group event. I'm inside the loop myself, so wouldn't need to travel far to meet.
-
I am new to the forum. I've been poking around the site for a while. I am just outside the loop and would love to get together if anyone is interested, let me know!
-
I'd be the awkward guy - I live out in Katy with a family. Posting to follow, not sure where I'd fit in, but would love it if Houston started a movement. Lots of potential here, although public transport and biking isn't necessarily a strong point. If I can offer FI advice or perspective, I'd be pretty thrilled.
Personally, grew up British, which is equivalent to MMM's Canadian (with a better sense of humor, the Brits don't punch faces:), but ultimately equivalently Mustachian. FI, not RE, but I'd love to try to contribute positively.
-
Forty two year old male, FIRE, North side a few miles from Spring.
-
I am in Houston, inside the loop as well.
Have you guys met already?
-
I'm from Conroe, but currently live in Korea. Maybe in a couple of years.
-
Ah well, I suppose if we were in CO or WA all would be well (the density works better than ours). Trying to establish a Mustachian community in Houston seems to be an exercise in herding cats. I'm always up for a social, but this doesn't seem to be making headway :) Please keep trying tho!
-
I'm in the Katy area with a family as well. I wouldn't mind meeting some other people but TBH not sure how well I'd fit in, I'm not a very hardcore mustachian.
-
I live in Montrose.
Not sure what you do at a Mustachian meetup. I guess you can't go out for beer/coffee because that would ruin all of our budgets :)
If there are enough people I'd be up for a meeting.
-
You bike 20 miles to a central meetup location to share homebrew beer while regaling each other with stories about how you developed your frugality muscles :)
-
Id be interested in meeting up. Im down in Clear Lake area, but im always up for some home brewed beer lol.
-
Austinite here, but I travel to Houston every couple of weeks. I would be down to meet up for a beer or two.
-
Allrighty then. Who's the homebrewer? I've homebrewed plenty of crap in my day, but nothing I'd foist on unsuspecting strangers. And, after more than over-use, all of my equipment was unceremoniously dumped at the curb years ago.... We could also meet at a bar or coffee shop, and order a designated-driver soda or free water, respectively :)
I think a Houston meet-up (especially given the changing times) would be an interesting idea. I've challenged myself to try to navigate the bike paths between Katy and downtown, so this would be a welcome excuse to try! Still following...
-
I'd be interested in meeting up also - and I'm down for whatever/wherever works for most people.
I'm just inside the beltway off of 290, so should be convenient enough to most places.
-
Sooooo.... We definitely have enough people for a meet up... now we need a location. My first vote is in fact for a home brewers house, mostly because im always up for trying someones home brew. Of course we could all still bring our own drinks, but the novelty of meeting up over a home brew sounds very mustachian. But if no brewers are in the area, then we will have to resort to a bar. I know this doesn't sound very Mustachian, but come on, this post has been up for over a month, I think we should all have had enough time to set aside a few bucks for some beers with some fellow MMers. I think a bar inside 610 is the best choice as that's central to everyone. Or we could meet up at a brewery like St. Arnolds or Karbach. Both of which I have been too and both good atmospheres for a meetup.
Karbach Tasting and Tour: Mon-Fri 230-9 w/ tour at 3,6
Sat 12-9 w/ tour at 1, 3, 6
Sun 1230-530 w/ tour at 1,3
http://www.karbachbrewing.com/tours/brewery-tours
St Arnolds: Tasting and Tour: Mon-Fri 2-430
Sat 11-230
http://www.saintarnold.com/tours/
I personally like Karbach Tasting better, its a more laid back style, sit outside or stand inside and it last longer, and you can buy additional tokens for $2.5/pc which most beers are a single token except their double IPAs are 2 tokens, but they are double the alcohol.
As for Bars, im up for anything.
-
Happy to cast a vote for Karbach, or, if people are willing to venture a little further, 'No Label' in Katy is well worth the trip (http://nolabelbrew.com/tours-tastings) - Saturday Tastings- Noon to 3pm. $8 Admission. Anyone arriving after 2pm will receive 2 beers instead of 4 beers (so Mustachians know what to do:)
-
I'd be interested to meet up at a brewery. I've only been to St arnolds which I enjoyed. I'm in the Katy area as well so No Label is close but I've never been.
-
I'd be down for whatever, coming from League City if anyone wants a ride in my new/used mustachemobile. I'm not quite up to biking all the way to Houston, but I'm working on it :)
-
I'm in Houston too but am not old enough to drink yet.
I hope you all meet at least once or a few times so I can tag along in the future. There is really is potential in this thread.
-

All of the breweries allow outside food/drinks. In fact I've seen a few people with children. St Arnolds actually has excellent Root beer.(imo)
-
Hey guys, I'm new to the forums and also from the Houston area, Sawyer Heights Area. 28 years old and would love to meet some like-minded people on the path to FIRE. I'll follow this thread to see how things develop.
If anyone is still interested in a meetup please let me know.
-
*bump*
This could still happen.
-
How about May 2, location TBD, probably somewhere inside the loop
-
I can do that.
-
Sounds good.
-
I'll show up to anything we can set up, within reason.
-
How about starbucks at westpark and kirby inside the loop? There are a lot of seating outside.
-
I'm not seeing a starbucks there (though I'd be surprised to find a corner without one). That area is good though.
Can we get an address for where you're talking about?
I'm thinking 11 in the morning would be good, anytime fine, earlier is better for me though. Puttin' it on the calendar.
-
My husband and I are moving to Houston and we'd love to meet some Mustachians! May 2nd will work for us.
-
May 2nd works with me as well. I have an appointment at noon but will be able to make any other time.
-
I have to sell pool cards for my HOA 2MAY15 from 1-4. Will be with you in spirit.
-
Any idea how long it might last? I can't make it at 11, but would try to catch the tail end. By all means, let's get this grassroots effort rolling!
-
I meant to say Starbucks at buffalo speedway and westpark. My bad.
-
uh, oops? are people still showing up? (I probably won't be able to) Maybe we get better organized for next month...
-
I'll be at the starbucks at buffalo speedway and westpark at 11 on May 2. If you can make it great. I'll be wearing a baseball cap, either white or gray. I won't be drinking anything, I may be reading something.
Codephrase for the meeting will be "you here for the meetup?."
I don't know how long it would last, I can't imagine more than an hour or so. I envision a meet and greet, and some planning for something better next time. There's only so much time you can sit and chat at a starbucks?
Hopefully one of you turns out to be better at planning events than me!
-
i 'll be there at 11 am.
-
My husband and I are planning to come as well.
-
We had a great get-together at Starbucks last Sat. Looking forward to the next one.
-
Another guy with wife and kids in Katy who likes beer... When's the next meetup?
-
Aye it was good times. I'd be down to meet up again. I think I'm driving through Houston again on the 24th of May.
-
I can't believe I missed this. I'm ALWAYS at that Starbucks on Saturday morning (yes, completely not mustachian). I'd be down for another meet...or beer works great too ;).
-
I had a friends wedding out of town the day of the meetup. In for the next one especially if it is at a brewery!
-
Ah, how bout June 6? I've been to St. Arnold's and it's a decent time, bit of a crowd though. We could try one of these other ones.
-
I'm up for another meetup!
Since I'm new to the city, I've been trying to find fun things to do in the city.
Here's a cool website:
http://www.houstononthecheap.com/
-
I'm up for June 6th at a brewery. FYI, St. Arnold is having their 21st anniversary that weekend so it may be a bit more crowded than usual. Other options are:
Karbach
Buffalo Bayou
I've only been to St. Arnold and Karbach, though. Buffalo Bayou is smaller, but I think less people know about it.
-
I would love to join a meetup, but won't be available June 6th. Free Press Summer Fest is that weekend. Hopefully this continues and I'll be able to make it to the next one.
A brewery tour sounds awesome. 8th Wonder is another one to consider.
-
June 6th should be good for me, as long as my son's Boy Scout camp-out doesn't get rained out again...
-
I can meet June 6th. Let's just finalize the brewery.
-
I'd be down for a Houston hang.
Besides beer, Mustachians also support cycling.
Is anyone planning on doing critical mass May 29?
-
June 6th works for me too.
-
June 6th works for me too.
Alright then, what is the venue? I'm out in Katy, I've never been to 'No Label', so I'll happily propose that. It could also be a park, if early enough in the day... I'm pretty relaxed, Starbucks is fine too. Just interested in what Mustachianism in Houston looks like, since there is so much potential here.
-
I'm free any time after 10 that day. I've never been to No Label but I'm always up for new beers, though it really is way out there, huh? Is it a bring your own chair sort of place, because I've literally whittled my belongings down to what fits in my car and my camping chair was not one of them. Karbach and St. Arnold's have seating...and just in case it rains St. Arnold's is inside. No preference, just FYI.
Edit: A friend will let me borrow their chair, if we go to No Label.
-
I'm available after 12 on June 6th. I'm new to the area, so I really don't have a good idea for a place to meet.
-
Going to be missing out on the June 6th one, my apologies.
Have a good time though! See ya'all at the next one.
-

missed it too.
if you guys have one october first or later, let me know. from memorial day to october 1, Houston's just too dam hot and humid be outside unless necessary imo.
-
Did some naked work in the backyard on Sunday. Was way too hot for clothes /agree.
-
St Arnolds is climate controlled. Seats go fast, though, so probably best to bring chairs.
-
Katy people, why don't we meet at La Centerra? There is much un-Mustachian activity to be discussed there!
-
Yeah, the Starbucks at La Centerra even!
-

Which I take part in sometimes.... :hides:
-
Any news on a meet up? I would be in for No Label, Karbach, Saint Arnolds, or Starbucks.
-
Miller Outdoor Theatre would be a very Mustachian activity.
Shakespeare Aug 1. Arrive early and picnic.

Hi Houstonites!
I'm currently based in Washington DC, but I just had a phone interview for a job in Houston that I'm very excited about. I'm pretty hopeful that they'll call me in for an in-person interview within the next few weeks, and I've been starting to do some research on apartments in the area and different car/bike options I could adopt if I'm fortunate enough to land this new position and move down.
Any advice you guys have about how to move in a Mustachian way, or particular suggestions on ways to be more Mustachian in Houston specifically, I'd love to pick your brains about it!
Also, hopefully once I move down there, I'll get to meet some of you in person and learn more from your experience!
Thanks,
Coral

Brace yourself for culture and climate shock! Plenty of rental competition, so shop around and don't commit to anything long term, try to locate close to work, and stay flexible as you try to figure it out. Houston does not have typical zoning restrictions, which means you can have pocket parks, liquor stores, book stores, strip clubs, crumbling apartments, an authentic Japanese grocery store, and million dollar homes all within 10 minutes of each other (its called Westheimer Rd.). It takes some getting used to, some people never quite acclimate. But your buck will go a lot further here than any big city, and there are places out in the 'burbs that are less chaotic.
Good luck!
-
If you know whereabouts in the general area the job is we can offer some tips. Don't have to be exact, but once you have an address you could point us at the nearest major crossroads.
-
Welcome to the Lone Star State! Houston is about readjusting the expectations--the climate sucks in the summer, but the winters are pretty sweet when the rest of the country is under feet of snow. The landscape is pretty ugly (although the city is working on the Inner Loop and it's much better than twenty years ago) but the people are incredibly warm, friendly and diverse. There's still a shortage of good coffee, but Tex-Mex and Asian food to satisfy every whim.
The secret to happiness is not being on the roads during commute time, so I advise looking for a home close to work, advocating a shifted schedule, etc. The infrastructure has not caught up with the recent population influx.
If you ask the mods to move this thread to Ask a Mustachian you might get more answers...I don't think this particular subforum gets a lot of traffic.
-
I'm in Houston. Live in Spring but hang out in Montrose quite a bit.
-
If you're interested in the cycling community, critical mass and bike houston are good groups to start with. As far as commuting goes, I've bike commuted the last 4 years when I switched to jobs inside the loop (or just outside the loop). Suburbia is much harder to bike commute around because it's essentially subdivisions separated by high-speed roads with no shoulders.
-
Ok, let's bump this location up again.
Once upon a time it looks like there was somewhat of a meet up at the Starbucks on Westpark and Buffalo Speedway. Let's do it again! How about Saturday September 19th at around 10 or 10:30? The weather should even be pleasant enough to sit outside where there is more seating.
Yes, I swore off Starbucks in another thread, but I'm willing to make a sacrifice in the name of meeting fellow mustachians. Also, pumpkin spice season! I have to get at least one in.
At any rate I'll be there.
-
Can we do the 26th later in the day (4:00ish), or October 3rd? I'm going to be out of town that weekend and I'd love to come.
-
I'd be interested in joining y'all on any of those Saturdays! (9/19, 9/26, or 10/3).
-
I can join on 10/3 but not those other dates. It would be cool to meet some like minded people. I feel like I'm constantly holding my tongue around friends and co-workers for fear they figure out my evil plan to retire by 45 or just think I'm bat shit crazy!
-
Can we do the 26th later in the day (4:00ish), or October 3rd? I'm going to be out of town that weekend and I'd love to come.
As it turns out, I'll be out of town both days. :(
But it worked for others last time so maybe they can be there then.
-
I can make it either the 26th or 3rd. On the 26th, instead of starbucks, we could do a picnic at discovery green and then stay for this: http://www.discoverygreen.com/1192016 or there is Ghostbusters showing at Deer Park on October 3rd.
-
I did a Mini-Meetup with EscapeVelocity2020 on Friday (fun!). I can make any of the three days.
-
Yeah, that was cool FV to talk to another sane individual :) I'll keep monitoring this thread to see when the next Houston meetup comes together, I'll try to make whatever!
-
So, just a reminder. I'll be at the Starbucks on Buffalo Speedway and Westpark tomorrow around 10-10:30 isn. Looks like I'll be in an olive green dress, glasses, Pumpkin Spice in Hand. Working on a crossword puzzle book before anyone gets there. Probably outside, weather permitting. Say hi!
-
Hi everyone. I would love to meet all of you wonderful people. We have been blessed with amazing weather so far and it looks like the coming weekends are going to be just as great, so let's meet up!
My suggestion would be the Buffalo Bayou Park (exact location TBD). Three reasons for this:
- Opportunity for a more active meetup. Read: let's walk and talk for a bit and explore one of Houston's backyards
- Central to Houston. Shoutout to all my mustachians in the burbs. Hopefully yall can still come and we can talk about dreams of suburb to city mass transit.
- Since this is a park and not a restaurant/bar/shop, there will hopefully be no temptation for frivolous consumption. Maybe a food truck or two might be present to work out our frugality muscles. Though this would be a wonderful opportunity for a picnic in the park. BYOB, BYOF, BYOC, what are some other ones?
Let's talk dates. Rather than awkwardly coordinating it here on the forum. Go to this Doodle poll (http://doodle.com/poll/27hg8s72rnan8k83) and sign up for the dates you can attend. Then when enough people have voted, we'll settle on a date.
Let's get this going before the year ends!
P.S. If you want to be notified on updates in this thread, make sure to click the NOTIFY button right next to the REPLY button.
-
Hi, I have been reading the Blog and Forum for a while, but this is my first time joining the discussion. I'd love to join for a future meetup! I think the idea of a doodle makes sense and the free activity of a park definitely works for me!
-
I shaved my mustache this morning...so, naturally, that reminded me of this thread.
The Doodle poll has declared that 11/7, 11/8, and 12/6 are the most popular dates for a meetup. It is entirely possible that we can have a meetup both in November and December. That way everyone who has responded gets a chance to attend.
For the November meetup, I propose Saturday the 7th, and I'll just throw out a time. How does 2pm sound?
Edit: I forgot to mention that Sunday Streets is this Sunday (11/1) in the Museum District. I will be there. PM me if you want to meet up.
-
it works for me.
-
I'll have to see you guys at the December meet-up. Hope you guys have fun!
-
November 7th at 2:00 is great and so is Buffalo Bayou. I'll be there. Exact location?
-
I will suggest meeting in front of the Dunlavy restaurant and walk to Downtown and back.
-
That sounds good. Let's do that.
-
Cool, I'll try to make it up there. I didn't know there was a restaurant there!
-
Will try to make it out. Don't judge us for driving there (our bikes got jacked!).
How will we identify each other? Is there a color we should all wear? A hand sign? Maybe we will ask each other "hey, are you here to meet Greg?" as a secret phrase?
-
Tomorrow is going be rainy so i suggest meeting at corner bakery at kirby and 59. Please confirm that you are coming. You can reach me at scepni@hotmail.com.
-
That's a good idea. Let's make the switch to the bakery. See you at two.
-
I'll be there.
-
I'm there as well. I'm the fool riding a green bike in the rain.
-
I have a purple golf shirt with stripes, i will be there in 5 minutes
-
Here now. Black shirt, white vest.
-
Twas a dreary day, but a good meetup between HoyaSaxa, econberkeley, and myself nonetheless. Among other interesting conversations, we talked about making this meetup a monthly recurring event on the first Sunday of every month so folks have more opportunities to attend.
For December, it would be the 6th, which just so happens to have the most interested attendees according to our doodle poll (http://doodle.com/poll/27hg8s72rnan8k83). I will think of a better solution for tracking attendees for the event (maybe Eventbrite will work). Look for that invite coming soon.
-
Doh! I missed it. Try to make next one on the 6th.
-
Who is up for a meetup this Sunday?
-
hi photohunts! what time sunday? i live along the rail line too! :-)
-
@kamille, last month we met around 2pm at corner bakery on 59 and kirby. I was thinking this time around the meetup be somewhere with an outdoor space since it looks like we'll have great weather on Sunday. Maybe Hermann or Buffalo Bayou park. I'm open for suggestions.
-
I misread and thought the meetup was Saturday morning. I'm going out of town later today :-( Maybe I can make the next one? I work a lot of weekends and sometimes have a crazy schedule! The parks would be perfect for future meet ups for me. I'll be on the lookout for more updates!
-
Hmm I did say Sunday, not Saturday. I think I just forgot what day it is X-) I'm going to blame it on being a sleep-deprived night-shifter. I still look forward to meeting up with fellow Houstonians sometime, sorry for the confusion.
-
Who is up for a meetup this Sunday?
My husband and I are in for meeting tomorrow Sunday 12/6. I like the idea of meeting at a park
-
I'm up for a meet up! Now we need to decide where and what time.
Here's my proposal:
2 pm tomorrow at Hermann Park
Any good landmarks around there we can meet at?
I know there's the Miller Outdoor Theater and the Arboretum, but I don't know the place well enough to recommend a specific pavilion.
-

I don't have an opinion on a specific meeting place or landmarks. Miller theater works. Unless someone else has a preference.
-
Looks likes we are going to need go reschedule for another time
-
Passing by Hermann park. Yell at me if you see me. Green bike with a blue Texans hoodie.
-
OK, I've lost track of "Who is on First?" Can someone spell out for me what date/place the next Houston meetup is?
-
Could we please try another doodle poll? The weather is a little unpredictable right now and cold. Maybe Houston Center for Photography or Contemporary Arts Museum could be good free places to meet up. They are free admission every day. I vote for the Houston Center for Photography because it also has free parking.
Houston Center for Photography
Saturday – Sunday: 11am – 7pm
Friday: 11am – 5pm
1441 West Alabama
Houston, TX 77006
Contemporary Arts Museum
Friday 10AM – 7PM
Saturday 10AM – 6PM
Sunday 12PM – 6PM
5216 Montrose Boulevard
Houston, TX 77006
Let me know what you guys think! I recommend Sunday 1/24 1pm @ the Photography Center.
-
Hey guys. Pretty new to this whole early retirement thing. Did a case study last year and got tons of good info.
http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/ask-a-mustachian/case-study-should-have-found-mmm-10-years-ago!!!/?topicseen
New year so started to browse again and see what I can be working on this year to help me along and saw the meetup page. I'm actually about and hour south of Houston and was really just curious what the meetups are all about and how often you guys get together? I'd definitely like to talk to some people who have lived this thing out and maybe get some tips.
Thanks and hope to meet some of y'all soon!
-
Any takers for meeting on 1/24 (this Sunday)??
-
My husband and I are most likely in for this Sunday.. Will post again before Sunday to confirm! Hopefully, more people will be available to join as well.
-
Awesome! I will post again this later this week to see if you guys are still in. Would anyone else be interested?
-
May be able to make this Sunday at 1pm. Silly question probably, but are we allowed to chatter inside the Houston Center for Photography? Or is there a nice patio area or something similar where we can just gather and chat? :)
-
Valid point.. I hadn't thought of that. Do you have a better location in mind? I'm open to ideas. The weather is supposed to be nice. We could do something outside.
-
This is probably a weird idea, but how about the patio at the HEB that's a couple of blocks from the Photography Center on West Alabama and Dunlavy (1701 W Alabama St)? Sometimes they have live music or food for sale, but it's public, got free parking, and we won't feel pressured to buy anything except maybe essential groceries?
-
What time of day Sunday 24th?
-
I'm in. The HEB is a great location!
-
HEB at 1pm on Sunday 1/24. Cai can you please send the address of the HEB location? Thanks!
-
The HEB is at 1701 W Alabama St, Houston, TX 77098.
-
Hi everyone - looking forward to making it this Sunday and meeting you all.
-
If FV is in, than EV is in :)
-
Ooh I will check with my husband, but hopefully I can come to this one!
-
Just saw this. I'm in.
-
Just a reminder that there a MMM meet up tomorrow at 1pm at the HEB patio located at 1701 W Alabama St. Hope to see you all there!
-
I will be there. Meet at the outside seating area?
-
Sounds good!
-
Just found out I can't make it tomorrow. Will keep an eye out for Feb get together, because I'm looking forward to meeting all of you.
Have fun. =)
-
Just realized thr meetup was for 1pm and not 1:30.. I won't get there for at least 30 min. Sorry!
-
Under the brown arbor thing. Wearing brown. Sipping iced coffee. Red book. Grab me if you're also here please :)
-
Running late but on my way!
-
Delayed meeting review:
The meet up (1/24) went really well! I think there were 7 or 8 of us who were able to make it out and we ended up talking for almost 4 hours! We successfully spent no money while hanging out and for those who need to go grocery shopping they happened to already be at the grocery store. :-) I think doing something similar next time (or the same thing) would work really well. Thanks for the suggestion cai!
-
Hello Houstonians! I am flying in for a meeting this weekend-- never been before-- and I have a small offer. I'm older than most of you, I think, FI, retired except for my side gig. It may be fun to have a drink and talk about journeys to FI; mine goes way back before "The Tightwad Gazette" days. I will pick up the check ( FI and all) for a small number of you ( say, up to 5ish) at my v. nice hotel in the central bz district on Sunday at about 6:30. Any interest? There is probably a dress code of collared shirts and no shorts if that's an issue.
-
Another place near HEB- has anyone ever tried a meetup on the lawn outside the Menil collection? There's always cyclists an slack-liners out there on the weekends.
-
Any plans for another meeting?
-
Let's do another meetup! Anyone interested for this weekend or next weekend?
-
I'm good with either. Just set a date, time, and place and I'll be there :-).
-
I can also do this weekend or next. Or even a weekday but I'm probably alone there.
-
Anyone want to get together sometime during April?
-
Hey I just found this post and would love to get together with other Houston Mustaschians. Hopefully I didn't miss it again.
-
I'm good to meetup anytime after the 4th in April
-
hey guys, I registered to be able to participate in this thread!!
I am just starting on my Mustaschian journey, but my family (hubby and 3 kiddos) is not on board with me. This troubles me greatly and I would love to join the community and find out how you guys are doing it.
-
HEY! Yes I want to meet up! Sorry I posted awhile back about wanting to meet up, and then sorta flaked on finalizing plans. My vote is something similar to last time (free/outdoors if the weather is nice!) on a weekend afternoon. April 9, 10, 16, or 17 work for me!
I am located in Northwest Houston and it would be great if we could meet that direction, but if most people live inside the loop then I don't mind driving again (although it is very anti-mustachian)

Hey My fellow Houstonians. I am would enjoy meeting up with some of you all. I am just beginning my journey to FI.. and it seems like everytime I get a step ahead something happens and I move back two steps. Hopefully meeting up with like minded mustacians will help me get past my current funk. I live in the Pearland area and any centralized area would be ok.
thanks
-
All these dates work for us! We could go to a park like discovery green or something. Bring snacks/drinks and have a picnic type of thing. What do y'all think?
-
Hi All,
Did you meetup? If not, how about Sunday, May 1? We could meet at Discovery Green or Montrose Heb around 1pm. It looks like that was the plan last time so maybe it would be convenient again. Hope I can meet the Houston mustachians. I'm new to the Mustachians world though I've always been one to save.

I'll be out of town for this one, but I think we have gotten a few new Mustachians in Houston, so a meet-up would be great!
In case others are not available for May 1 either, anyone up for trying to meet up this Sunday 1pm at HEB Montrose? Same place as last time?
edited to include slash-out because it's too confusing. You guys should just try to meet up May 1.
-
This Sunday doesn't work for me, but I think I'd like to make one of these meetups in the future. I'm out in the Energy Corridor, but would enjoy having an excuse to drop into the area around the Montrose HEB again one of these weekends; strolling the Menil Collection is one of my favorite free things to do in Houston. I'm not on the road to RE, but I do have an appreciation for financial sanity.
-
How about May 8 instead? Just trying to give enough lead time for everyone to log in and be able to mark it on their calendars. :) Btw, I live in memorial area so I'm not tied to central Houston. It just seemed to work in the past.
Theresa
-
You guys, we are SO BAD AT THIS.
Sunday, May 8, 2016 at 2PM, the HEB at 1701 WEST ALABAMA ST HOUSTON, TX 77098, I will be at the nice outdoor seating area, same as last time!
If no one shows up, I will just have a lovely time getting groceries.

DH and I will be there!
-
I will be there.
-
I'm hoping to swing by (maybe with my family, although the wife and kids are not sporting the full mustache I am).
-
For those of you who are coming, I'll see you soon. Will be in navy and outside under the arbor unless it starts raining, in which case we can meet inside in the cafe area.
-
I'm on my way. Should arrive about 2:10. See you soon!
-
Sorry I posted a few dates and then went MIA!
Two things. I think I accidentally "unsubscribed" and therefor stopped getting email alerts. and also I was out of town this past weekend.
I know ya'll just met up. How did it go? Anyone up for having another in the near-ish future?
-
Sorry I missed this one. Don't check this forum often enough!
-
Who's up for another meet-up?
-
I am. If we met at a place that is slow during the afternoon, we could have a leisurely visit somewhere inside out of the heat and not have to worry about taking a table for too long.
Go ahead, call me a wuss. :D
I've never been able to make one of these and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.
-
I'm definitely interested in meeting up again. I think I somehow unsubscribe too. I'll be better about checking this time.
-
HEY! Let's meet up this weekend. I am flexible either day.. someone else name a time/location!
Is there a way to notify people who have expressed interest but may not check the forum often? PM?
-
I'll be in Austin Saturday but I could do Sunday afternoon! Not sure how to contact people though.
-
Ok, I think I'm in. Location/time?
-
I could meet-up either Saturday afternoon or Sunday afternoon.
-
I could do something around lunch on Saturday
-
Bump. Do we have enough people who want to meet up tomorrow?
-
It's hot enough that maybe AC would be good in the middle of the day...
I'm out in Katy like I think a few of the people in the thread are. Maybe somewhere on I-10 inside the beltway? Memorial city mall area?
-
Memorial city mall works for me... Time? Maybe early afternoon?
-
Did anyone decide a time? If not, what about a repeat next Sunday at 3, same place?
-
We never set a time for today. I can't make it next weekend.
-
Next weekend is a no go for me as well.
-
July 31st (Sunday) at 2:30pm at the memorial city mall cafeteria (free, AC place that won't kick us out)?
-
I'm back in town and can make July 31st.
-
Did anyone make it? I saw this message late and came up to the mall but this place is packed. Apparently a lot of people enjoy free AC. I have a gray and white striped shirt if yall are around.
Theresa
-
I didn't see anyone comment, so I figured no one would show. Sorry I missed you!
-
You guys! We are terrible at this!
Want to try Memorial City Mall cafeteria again this weekend? Sunday August 7 at 2:30pm.
Do we need a strategy to find each other?
-
Pretty sure I can't make this weekend. Also, being tax-free weekend for school clothes/supplies, I'd stay far, far away from malls.
It's pretty short notice for folks - what about MC mall on a different weekend?
-
Okay let's meet on Sunday 8/21 at 2:30pm in the memorial city mall.
-
I should be able to make it. The kiddos start school the next day, so it might be good to get out of the house :)
-
I might be up for the MC mall meetup on 8/21. How will we know if it's a go and how to know which group of misfits to go up to?
-
I'll be there with my J.L.Collin's Simple Path to Wealth book. That should be distinct enough :-)
-
I know 3 other people who are not on this thread, which are planning on attending this Sunday at 2:30pm. Can everyone on this thread, which is planning on going say so? It would be helpful to know who/how many is planning on going to the meetup.
-
I still plan to swing by.
-
I'm tentative at this point. I'll post again when I'm more sure either way, but I'll try to be there
-
Hubs and I will be there :)
-
I should be there.
-
I will be there. Is the cafeteria the same as the food court? If not, what is the name?
-
Same as the food court.
-
I would like to try to join you all on Sunday afternoon, will try to make it if the kids go down for naps.
-
Checking in one more time. It's looking like a "go".
-
I will be there unless it's pouring down rain, since I'm driving from Atascocita, in which case I might just be late. Looking forward to meeting everyone - I'm the old lady!
-
I'll be there with my J.L.Collins book! Looking forward to meeting everyone!
-
I'll be the old guy :). I'm imagining a bunch of 20 somethings, so 42 is ancient. Hopefully FV shows up to bridge the generational divide
-
I'm in the food court with the book :-) parking a was terrible!
-
I just now found a spot. Walking into Dillard's in search of the food court.
-
I'm near the merry go round. This place is huge. No one has a book yet.
-
I'm 8 tables directly out from Sarku, facing chipotle. Long black hair, light blue dress.
-

I'm with esq. black rockets shirt
-
I definitely had a good time meeting you guys. We'll have to do it again soon.
-
Hey Houstonians!
I would like to set up a gathering before critical mass on Sep30th. Bring your beers and snacks to market square park at 5:30pm.
Fun and cheap!
Critical mass starts between 7-7:30pm. DON"T FORGET YOUR BIKE!

Downtown on a Friday is tough, but I won't completely rule it out. Great idea though.
-
Hey guys!
We are in the Houston area. My husband and I (and 3 kids) are 4 years away from FI. We already host a minimalism group in the Houston area where we talk about simple living and early retirement. We have some couples in the group from different age groups and several single people as well. We have already hosted several meetups this year.
I haven't read through the posts yet - but in case this meetup hasn't taken place yet - we would love to host one in November. There is a awesome cafe/coffee shop in Northwest Houston area (Spring/woodlands) that lets us use their TV screens and sitting areas to our heart's content for presentations and movies on minimalism or anything else we need to present. They are also very kid friendly and even entertain our children while we mingle and present LOL.
I can post a link to our last meetup if that is allowed? Anyone game for a November meetup?
Mina & Irfan
-
A meetup in November sounds great (so does one in north Houston). What date are you leaning towards?
Michael
-
I'm is southwest Houston. My wife and I could possibly make the meetup in November if it's still happening.
-
I would be interested in a minimalism / early retirement meetup! Can you send me the info?
-
I guess I'm late to this party as I just discovered this thread. I'd love to meet some fellow Houston Mustachians, perhaps after the holidays.
Since the weather is usually tolerable this time of year, I'd vote for something outside like Karbach Brewery, Hermann Park or Elenor Tinsley (Buffalo Bayou) Park.
--Mike in SW Houston
-
MoMan/Mike,
My hubs and I are also in SW Houston and I love the idea of all of those locations you mentioned. Any one else interested?
-
In Houston and would be down to meet up too.
-
I'm free the weekends of Jan. 7, 14 and 28. Anyone have any preferences?
-
No preference, currently we are free those weekends as well.
-
OK, I'm going to throw out Saturday, January 7 at Karbach Brewery. 5:00 p.m.
Jan. 7 because that marks 2.75 years until my F.I.R.E. date, and Karbach because I love beer and can entice my (non-mustachian) wife to join me.
So anyone else interested?

Howdy, houstonian here. So are some of my co workers.
-
Hey benhogan-- Great to hear of other like-minded Houstonians. Are you up for a beer next Saturday?
-
Yo MoMan, sorry didnt see this, need to subscribe to this and get the notifications. Yes, let me know when yall meet up.
:)
-
Former Houstonian who is moving back into town in April. I'd be interested in any meetups going on if there is somewhere to track when those are happening.
-
I'd definitely be interested in a Meetup - maybe we can try for the back half of March?. I work in the Galleria, but live in the Friendswood/Pearland area.
Is there a Houston area Mustachians Facebook group? I couldn't find one when I searched.
-
I would definitely be interested in a meetup too! I live north of Houston but I can use my clown car to get to you guys. I'm really interested in meeting fellow mustachians who understand and get excited about financial freedom. Not many of them up here. Do you think we should start a Houston meetup group on facebook? I know there's one for Austin.
Anyways, just wanted to say hello and I hope we can plan something for the end of March too! I'll have a plus one since the fiance is semi on board with my stash-a-thon plan :-)
Cheers!
Josh

A facebook page might help since I don't check this thread as often. I suppose I could just set it up to notify that way I'll get an email when one of y'all posts. Anyways, end of march meetup sounds great to me!

afuera, that's what I did - I just marked the thread to notify me when there was a response which works well. But yeah, I'll setup a facebook page sometime over the next few days, or by this weekend for sure and post the link here.
-
Thanks AustinHorn! A meetup of 3 sounds like a good startup to me! I'll watch for your response and we can go from there
-
I will probably be able to join you guys in late March (but not the weekend of the 25th)
-
Alright guys - I went ahead and setup a Houston Area Mustachians Facebook Group. I haven't filled it out yet, but you can go ahead and request to join. Here's the link:

Bumping this to the top for any Houston area folks who haven't found the Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/groups/HoustonAreaMustachians/.
We've got a poll on the page for March meetup dates and it's looking like next Saturday (3/19) is the most likely date.
-
A little late for this time around...but sent a request in to the facebook group. Moving to Houston this summer and really interested to meet some people that know more about the area!

I'd be down. However, I'm inside the loop and I just bought a bike, so I'd preferably want to keep it within the loop.
Anyone in Montrose, Midtown, Washington, Heights, Greenway, River Oaks, Downtown, or EaDo? :P
I homebrew occasionally, bake sourdough, read a ton of books, have a home gym, have a 3.5 yr old boy, and just bought my first bike. Would be sweet to make some Mustachian friends in the neighborhood.
Really been wanting to get into carpentry/woodworking/metal working, if anyone knows how, I'd be willing to barter (I also make beef jerky, haha).

I sent you a PM

Hey all,
Just wanted to touch base with fellow Houstonian Mustachians. We live in Spring/Northside. Have a toddler and another on the way, so we're pretty home-bound in the evenings. Would love to get together for some morning/afternoon outings though.
Just sent request to join the facebook group.
We'd be happy to plan a hike/stroll/picnic at one of the nearby nature preserves if other people were interested. It's a place we regularly go with our 2-year-old.
-
Are any of you working at downtown? Let me know if any of you interested in talking fire over lunch.
-
I'd be up for a chat near Hess Tower. Drop me a line when and where, I can discuss FI extensively but RE still seems to elude me (but not my wife)...
-
I'm near Allen Parkway/Montrose. Parking downtown for me could be problematic unless you have suggestions, otherwise I'm usually flexible for lunch.
-
Phoenicia on austin street has free parking. It is couple of blocks from hess. What do yo guys think?
-
I can do that. My only upcoming conflicts are: Dec. 28-29, Jan 25-29. Otherwise, any day should be good
(unless some jerk decides to schedule yet another work meeting over my lunch break!)

Hello, Mustachians of Houston!
I'm a Norwegian engineer (in my late 20s) that suddenly got sent over to Houston for work. I'm only going to be in Houston for one week and I'll be coming over Wednesday 6. June and leave Wednesday 13. June.
This travel got me thinking: What if I can meet with some other Mustachians when I'm over there? If would be very fun to see how Houston is for the people living there, and not stay at the Hotel all the time. I'm still not sure how much spare time I will get when I'm there, but I think it's a chance that I'll have at least one of the weekend days off work and probably some evenings.
If anyone had some time and chance to meet up it would be amazing! Answer here, or send me a PM :)
I would also really appreciate if you have some tip and ideas of what to do in the area when I'm there. I will stay quite close to the George Bush airport while I'm there so things to do in the proximity of this area would be favorable.
Thanks in advance,
Sincerely yours,
Jon from Norway
-
Hi Jon, I'm able to meet up sometime this weekend June 9-10. When are you free?
Are any other Houston mustachians able to meet up?
I'll take a look at the local events calendars and see what's going on this weekend up near IAH airport...
-
Hi BZB,
That would be awesome, however, my plans changed a little bit. A friend of mine flew in from LA to visit me and he'll stay until Monday morning.
I'm still going to be here until Friday, so if anyone has an open spot an evening (after 5pm) Monday - Thursday the coming week I'm up for a meetup.
-

bump for Friday
-
I will see ya'll there. I will have a yellow purse.

That meet up was awesome!
My only complaint was that I didn't get to meet everyone in the 3 hours I was there. But the people I did meet were awesome.
-
I agree, the meet up at St. Arnold's Brewery was fun. I don't use Facebook, so if anyone knows about more Houston Choose FI meetups, please cross post them on here.
Would anyone be interested in going to a lunch at Houston Restaurant Weeks? I don't get out to restaurants much, but this is a chance to eat at a nice place for much less money and part of the proceeds goes to the Houston Food Bank.
The one I'm eyeing is Hugo's (look at the lunch menu tab) http://www.houstonrestaurantweeks.com/?alttemplate=SearchResults#menu-hugos (http://www.houstonrestaurantweeks.com/?alttemplate=SearchResults#menu-hugos)
The restaurant weeks deal may only be available on weekdays, will have to check. If I can get a few people who are definitely interested, let's agree on a date and I will make us a reservation.

Let's get together for the first meet-up....in a while 🙂. Feel free to comment if you want a specific agenda, but I thought it would be interesting to just do introductions.
1) How did you find FIRE?
2) Where are you on your journey?
3) What do you think the Houston ChooseFI Group should focus on?

Meeting in the beer garden if not raining.

Was a good meetup. Four hours in the beer garden with mostly pleasant (tolerable) weather for Houston in July. Mostly meet and greet and light chit chat but always good to talk life goals with your tribe. Multiple attendees past the finish line. More that are close. One that FIREd, discovered a passion for farming and went back to work to fund a bigger farm/fatter FIRE.
