Anyone know what happened to TIAA-CREF mutual funds today?
« on: December 13, 2013, 08:02:39 PM »
All of the TIAA-CREF mutual funds in my main 403(b) took a massive shit today, across all asset classes:

Code: [Select]
> getQuote(c('TRERX','TIHRX','TRVRX','TRLCX','TRSCX','TRGIX'))
Trade Time  Last Change % Change Open High Low Volume
TRERX 2013-12-13 06:25:00 11.53  -0.18   -1.54%  N/A  N/A N/A    N/A
TIHRX 2013-12-13 06:25:00 10.20  -0.24   -2.30%  N/A  N/A N/A    N/A
TRVRX 2013-12-13 06:25:00 21.76  -1.63   -6.97%  N/A  N/A N/A    N/A
TRLCX 2013-12-13 06:25:00 16.79  -1.42   -7.80%  N/A  N/A N/A    N/A
TRSCX 2013-12-13 06:25:00 15.02  -0.30   -1.96%  N/A  N/A N/A    N/A
TRGIX 2013-12-13 06:25:00 11.64  -1.33  -10.25%  N/A  N/A N/A    N/A

Check out the Growth and Income fund (TRGIX); 10%+ loss in one day.  I have never seen anything like this happen outside of major market movements in 2011 and 2008.  I don't see anything similar happening to other broad asset classes from my other mutual fund retirement accounts (ING and Vanguard).

I'll continue to stick with my allocation for now but this has me a little freaked out--even though I know shouldn't sweat day-to-day fluctuations, it seems weird to see such large drops across all asset classes.

If that is a massive dump you need to revisit your risk tolerance.

Almost without a doubt, these funds went ex div for year end cap gains distributions.  Look for additional shares to show up in your account shortly (possibly Monday).

If the same thing happened across all of my accounts, I'd certainly reassess my appetite for risk.  This only happened in the TIAA-CREF account, though, so:

This is exactly what I was looking for/expecting.  I hadn't thought about the fact that we're nearing the end of the year.  Thanks for the reality check.
