Vanguard: All-stock 3-fund portfolio?
« on: July 23, 2018, 04:31:14 PM »
Any suggestions on an all-stock 3-fund portfolio? I just completed a rollover of my Roth 401(k) into my existing Vanguard account where I hold VTSAX and VTIVX. I'd like to get out of VTIVX and put these funds into Admiral shares for two funds to complement my VTSAX holding. I know that VTIAX is one common refrain, but I'm open to suggestions for/against that along with other recommendations for a third.

(I had a bit of a late start in getting my investments going, so, I only have ~$30k in total)

Thank you for reading!

Not sure why you'd go with 3 funds if you want 100% stock allocation. Are you looking to tilt your exposure to the market (people make various arguments for value, growth, small, emerging)? I'd likely go with about 1/3 VTIAX and the rest in VTSAX if I had a 30k balance in an account that I wanted a 100% stock allocation.

taf87 - Do you mean that you'd like to subtract bonds from the "3 fund portfolio"?  My understanding is that a 3 fund portfolio includes a larger allocation to bonds over time.  So you can't really subtract bonds and keep using the term "3 fund portfolio".

You are creating a stock portfolio of US total stock market and international.  You might start with ETF shares, since you can buy those in smaller minimums.  You can buy a single share of VTI or VXUS at Vanguard for $0/trade.  Then you get the lower expense ratios, but don't have to meet the $10,000 minimums for admiral class shares.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
