Trying to avoid fees in a TIAACREF portfolio
« on: May 12, 2015, 03:18:16 PM »
Oh Wow, JLCollinsNH has got me seriously scared about my 403B and the FEES I am paying!
http://jlcollinsnh.com/2013/06/28/stocks-part-viii-b-should-you-avoid-your-companys-401k/

I’ve been an idiot in my TIAACREF account and have invested in funds with high expenses... At least I caught it now, better late than never. I would like to rebalance my contributions into the available vanguard funds that they offer and want to ask for some mustachian advice.

The available investments are as follows and I am allowed to assign a percentage to each one :
VIEIX-Vanguard Extended Market Index Fund Institutional
VINIX-Vanguard Institutional Index Fund Institutional
VTSNX-Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund Institutional
VBITX-Vanguard Short-Term Bond Index Fund Institutional
VBTIX-Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund Institutional
VMRXX-Vanguard Prime Money Market Fund Institutional

Could you please suggest an allocation (adding up to 100%) for a 30 year old hoping to retire at 45?

I really appreciate your advice!!!!!!

If you want to track the market cap, for your stocks:
40% VINIX
10% VIEIX
50% VTSNX

For your bonds:
100% VBTIX

Only you can decide how much you want in stocks vs bonds.

This mimics (to a close approximation with current valuations) the Vanguard Total World Stock Index, but with a much lower expense ratio.
