Great news headline on Marketwatch: "Dow surges nearly 400 points, defying bearish sell signal - here's a theory as to why"

My first thought? "What's your theory - Technical Analysis is b.s.?"

Second thought was, of course - "Top is NOT in!"

Here’s why:  the top industrial complex only works when they keep producing new tops

So I think I'm getting a better picture how the Top Economy works.  They make a new top, the top gets called and more people rush out to get new tops before the top is in.  Kind of like how gun sales go up right after a mass shooting because people stock up on guns in case they get banned.  Also explains why thorstach calls the Top right before the market goes up, except for this time, because the GOAT MOAT IS IN.

Fear is back, VIX above 15, XIV breaking down. SPY to follow, earnings will be a reality check.

Happy anniversary, Top!

A year ago today the S&P opened at 2353.92,
and Thorstach let us all know the top was in.

Today the S&P will open at 2656.87,
an increase of 12.87% from a year ago.

Thanks for the gains, the laughs, and all the failed predictions.
Happy Anniversary to us all.

Not for us, just for all those losers who didn't realize the to was in! We all listened to the great and wise thorstach so we scored 1.5% in our high yield savings accounts, minus taxes of course.

I can't believe this hasn't come up yet, it's so topical.

Mac: Can a twink be a top or is that reserved for bears?

Dennis Reynolds: I'm sure there's a great deal of switching back and forth but I think more often then not bears are tops, unless they happen to be power bottoms.

Frank Reynolds: What's a power bottom?

Happy anniversary, Top!

A year ago today the S&P opened at 2353.92,
and Thorstach let us all know the top was in.

Today the S&P will open at 2656.87,
an increase of 12.87% from a year ago.

If you had told me a year ago that the market was going to be up 12.9% over the next 12 months, I probably would have said "Sure, sounds reasonable.  I like your optimism!"

If you had told me a year ago that the market was going to be up 23% and then crash 10% in a week, I would have been skeptical about the proposed volatility but still pretty happy about the end result.  "You're going to scare people, but I see you're still an optimist at heart."

If you had told me a year ago that the top was in, I would have said you were wrong.

The past 12 months have been fantastic to stock buyers, volatility and all.  I'm riding the wave all the way to the bank.  Thorstach, Mrpercentage, and all the rest of you permabears, please continue to cry loudly about the coming Armageddon.  I need more willing sellers to make my retirement strategy work, and your voices are making it much easier to get rich these days.  We are living in the golden age of early retirement.

Well I for one am happy I sold everything and went 100% to cash and gold bullion thanks to Thorstach's advice. Thorstach can clearly tell the difference between an uptrend and a downtrend without the need to wait for data from the future.

And here it is!  i wonder what the data from one year in the future holds

Given that this thread was started with a prediction that the top is in due to VIX spiking, I'm going to just leave this here:

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/why-the-vix-suggests-the-stock-market-low-is-in-2018-04-17

(Summary, VIX says Bottom is In)

I swear, reading the tea leaves never gets old.
