Somehow the market always knows what day your 401k contribution is going in

I thought I was the only one...my 401k purchase day is Wednesday, and I swear it's always after a big green day.

The market know when we buy, and it also seems to know when thorstash calls the Top.

That's cause AI is running the show, and we just don't know it yet.

If not for the fact that the top is always in, I would doubt this. It seems unlikely that inflated real estate only happened in one state.

I was going to do some rebalancing today, then I remembered that somewhere I read definitively that the top is in, so I figured why bother.

I think thorstach would say: "Fear is back, VIX above 15, XIV breaking down. SPY to follow, earnings will be a reality check."

I never get a serious reply on this, but I've always had this philosophical puzzler to pass the time:
How long does an inflation-adjusted ATH have to hold the record before someone accurately can call it a top? The real value of the S&P in 2001(?) wasn't reached again until 2014. If thorstach had been investing in 2000, would he be right? What if the same ATH went unchallenged for 30 years, or 70, or 8, or 2? How local does a local maxima have to be to count as a top?

It is very relative to one's age, in my opinion. As a 62-year-old who retired 4 years ago, I would say my local min/max is 10 years. I do hope we attain a new ATH within 10 years, but if not, it's no big deal as my equity allocation is light and I have plenty of fixed income. unfortunately, I am not accumulating at a discount as I did during past downturns.

I would think reasonable people could agree that the S&P top was in after the 1929 drop.  Same with the NASDAQ in 2000...  Of course, inflation being inflation, in nominal terms the top will only be in when productivity declines or the monetary system collapses.  Long live the Top!

In theory, inflation could grow faster than the long-run total return of the S&P500, causing the top to be in, in real terms even if stock prices went up in nominal terms. Of course if that were to happen, the top might also be in, in nominal terms. So there you have it - two ways for the top to be in.
