Being semi-serious here...

What's up with the lack of volatility lately? It's just been a nearly steady march upward for a full year.  The last time we had any volatility spike was just after the elections.  The last four months have been particularly quiet.
(see below)
http://schrts.co/s35M8B

I'm calling bottom on market volatility.

Obviously, top is in.  But how much will we drop?  And for how long?

Sorry to post real info on this thread, but take a look at this:  https://www.americanfunds.com/individual/planning/market-fluctuations/past-market-declines.html

I thought it was interesting in the "expectation management" department.
American funds are crap, so I assume their analysis is too. That said, I wanna say that the top is in. Will be converting my VTI to guns, bullets, and canned beans to ride out the apocalypse.

I don't really care to hear from thorstache, but from the posters that were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because he used some new (to those posters, anyway) jargon. He could have lucked out and been correct with his arbitrary call, but instead he was risibly wrong. I hope this is a good wake up call not to believe any bullshit artist spinning new theories about the stock market, even if s/he believes their own bullshit.

It's a scam as old as investing history. 50 years ago, it was letters being sent out.

Start Edvard Joons Investing Company.

Print up two batches of letters. Half say the market (or a single stock) is going UP. Half say it's going DOWN.

Mail letters out to your mailing list.

After the market moves, set away the half of the mailing list you sent bad predictions.

Repeat with the half you sent a correct prediction.

After  a couple of iterations, get the suckers who believe you are right all the time to pay you (Maybe for your newsletter. Maybe signing up for you as their EJ broker, whatever) - now you're on easy street.

Now get the remaining mailing list you sent "bad" or "mixed" answers, add any new ones you have, rename yourself Mark Antony Investing Company and start the scam over again.

In the modern age, you just create various identities on various sites and take opposing views. Much cheaper.
A popular scam with many variations. Here is the "legitimate" business version of this scam. The peddlers of expensive mutual funds, etfs, financial instruments, etc. create 20 funds/etfs with different investing strategies. After a year, or two or three, 2 outperform the market significantly. Trash the funds/etfs that do poorly and advertise the heck out of the two that did well. Watch the money flow your way. Totally legit. Totally a scam.

YOLO?  Is that some kind of trendy, expensive frozen yogurt?

1. I think it is.
2. It's the name of the county in CA where I went to school.
3. I thought for years that the two might be related until someone explained it was an acronym.

Don’t change your AA just because you’ve read some admittedly brilliant analyses here and all the talking heads on TV are screaming “Bacon!” - A disciplined investor has an INvestor Policy STatement (IPS) that outlines their AA,and they stick to the plan.

Is that "stick to the plan" or "stick to the pan"?  You need to season the pan better.

If you're 100% in bacon I think you need to diversify into avocado toast.  I don't think the top is quite in on it yet.

You have to keep an eye on new products creating stock correlations all the time, I'd sell everything as these are now extremely correlated (if I hadn't already sold because top was in this morning).

It's even worse here in QUebec - we've got the MSE (Minestère du Sirup d'Érable).  You absolutely do not mess with the MSE.  One guy is serving an 8 year prison sentence for stealing maple syrup and running afoul of the MSE.

I'd never had bacon dipped in maple syrup until a couple years after I got married. I don't know whether to kiss DH for introducing me to something so delicious, or kill him for being right about how awesome it is.

Just great.  The most timid investment generation in a century is going to get in now, and in a year or three we're likely to see a correction. Many will never trust "the market" again.

I've been in the market since 2010 and just keep investing whenever possible (late 20's millennial).

By contrast, I have a co-worker who I just learned is late 60's and he pulled all of his retirement investments out in February of '09 (couldn't take the crash anymore) and has refused to put anything back in because he doesn't trust financial markets anymore and think it's all a scam.

With my permission, I'm staying on the contract as a consultant.   Because of certain periodic background checks that are a requirement where I've been working, and the fact that our area isn't on the "cool list", it can be a real problem to quickly recruit suitable talent.   By keeping me on the contract the certification for those background checks remains intact.  If their DBA or programmer leaves or gets hit by a bus, I can fill in for a couple of months while they recruit.    Obviously, they can't make me do it if I don't want to.   But keeping those background checks certified means it's much, much easier for me to find a job if I need one.   Pretty much guaranteed I could find one pretty quickly if I wanted one and was willing to travel.   If not, pretty much means I could find one locally within a year.

It's a win-win-win for me, the customer and the company.

The Top Is In!

Sweet ass!  Have they started trying to reel you back in yet?  It is amazing how difficult it is for HR and management to comprehend, "I don't need the money anymore..."

I have had my manager try to bribe me stay longer with our first salary action in a year and a half.    I said, I can't accept it as a bribe.     Manager then asked, will you start looking for work after the summer?   - This despite the "I no longer need the financial support of Semi-Big Corp" in my letter.   I told the Manager that he would be the first person I'd call if I did, but don't wait for it.

I confidently predict "The TOP is IN" May 31, 2018 --- my last working day.
