Canadians - TD Direct Investment Account - Non TD funds???
« on: March 28, 2019, 10:23:21 AM »
Noobie (soon to be direct investor) here.

Does a TD Direct Investment Account only offer TD funds? I'm looking to (possibly) purchase/hold non-TD funds (such as  Fidelity, Vanguard, Meritage etc.) and I'm researching using WebBroker. When I type in the fund name or code it's not found which makes me think that I need to go with a discount brokerage to buy these funds.

I like to keep things simple (as in all in one place) so I hope I'm not correct.

If you're buying ETFs you should be able to type the symbol in. VCN, for example.

TD DI is a full brokerage, you can buy whatever you want.

TD sells a broad range of mutual funds from many fund companies. In the buy & sell window you need to select the mutual fund tab. Also they don't sell F-series funds through TDDI because those are intended for investors that use fee-based advisors. And if a D-series fund is available the platform should redirect you to it from a higher MER fund that is intended to be sold to investors using advisors. There used to be a list of mutual fund companies that TDDI sold on their website, but I cannot find it now.

Is there a particular fund you are looking for?

EDIT: Meritage looks like National Bank's in-house funds, so unlikely they would be available anywhere other than National Bank. Other in-house funds like Tangerine, Investors or Quadrus would not be available at TDDI.

I have a TD WebBroker account and can buy pretty much any fund or stock I want (Which is mainly Vanguard and iShares and a couple fun stocks like Tesla).

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
