Startups - Partners - Angels
« on: December 04, 2017, 03:01:53 PM »
Does anyone here ever use this forum to discuss entrepreneurial efforts, get feedback on fundraising efforts, or pitch potential investments?

Has anyone here ever gone into a business venture with someone you met on the forum?

Are there any restrictions on discussing or offering investment opportunities here?

(Yes, these questions are more than idle curiosity)

Isn't offering investment opportunities to the general public (non-accredited investors) outside of an IPO illegal?

Well arebelspy has used the forums for his tradeline company, there's one instance.  I'm curious to hear of any more though.

I imagine that a number of them have occurred over private messaging?

Not necessarily, but it can be. Selling unregistered securities always is. The rest depends.

I think they have a new law that changed that.  I see a bunch of crowd investing things show up in my facebook now.    For instance,  I got an ad for this "Help Us Fund a Christman Movie, and you get 50% of profits" pitch pretty much continuously for 6 weeks or so.   I declined to invest

https://wefunder.com/thatchristmasmovie

However, certainly in those facebook ads the backers kept replying to comments that they couldn't discuss things due to SEC regulations about where they could present them

Caveat:  I'm not a lawyer so this shouldn't be taken as legal advice.

I don't think anyone here will sue you, disclaimer or not.
