Sold my last stock.
« on: March 13, 2014, 05:32:50 PM »
As of this week, I no longer own any individual stocks. 10 years ago, I did quite a bit of active trading - but really, it wasn't worth it. I held onto one longshot (CRAY) I had bought cheap - but over the weekend, I decided it was time to consolidate everything to Vanguard and set the wheels in motion to transfer everything over. Monday, I sold off the longshot*, and everything will be indexes.

I just no longer have the time or inclination to properly evaluate individual stocks. Therefore I don't really have business leaving money in individual stocks.

*Yes, it did pay off well enough. Almost quadrupled in value. But it could have also gone to zero.

I say congratulations are in order.  :)

Smart decision, IMO.   Now it's fairly simple: stay the course.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

Congrats!

Last year I moved the last of my money from managed funds to index funds, which felt great also.

I got out of my only managed fund around 1993, cashed it in for college expenses. I had accumulated some money from working in high school, and had invested with a monthly contribution.

Figuring out my tax basis by hand was a real PITA.

Congrats on your decision. I am an active trader (also am in index funds) but I am sure I too am getting closer and closer after 15+ years to move out of doing it myself. As of now I still enjoy tremendously doing it, but my time needed for research etc..will take a major hit soon with 4 kids (2 in high school). I Respect your decision on the move and good luck!! .

Now it's just waiting for Vanguard to actually process the paperwork, and TDAmeritrade to transfer over the $$

Um. Oops. I do still own some stocks. Until the market opens tomorrow, anyway.

Had a rollover IRA, also at TD Ameritrade - but unlike Vanguard, they don't automatically link the accounts - so I missed it in my initial "account roundup."  Gah, 4 different IRA accounts (not 3). Plus a 401(k) at my current employer.

So, shame on me for not catching it the first time. Haven't looked at it in almost 8 years (Yes, more evidence I should not be holding individual stocks.)

I'll be consolidating this one over to Vanguard as well. All of my IRAs in one place.
