Recommendations for ETFs in a 401k
« on: October 25, 2021, 07:58:35 PM »
I was talking to our HR representative today about ETFs in our 401k and she said she would ask about adding any fund I recommended.  Currently we have a decent mix (Vmcix, vinix, vscix, vtsnx), but am curious as to your opinions.  As some background I am currently trying to diversify away from the US more.

Vinix is the "corporate" version of VTI - that is what I chose.

That's not accurate.  It's an institutional S&P 500 fund, with 506 stocks.

While the number of stocks in VTI has reached 4025 (!)

VXUS and VTSNX have the same 0.08% expense ratio, so the existing VTSNX mutual fund will work just as well:

The sad thing is that the institutional S&P 500 fund has a 0.035% expense ratio with just 506 stocks, while VTI shares that anyone can buy charges 0.03% per year and holds 4,025 stocks.

Can you convince them to add "VTI" to the mix?  Also, I suspect Vanguard doesn't enforce the $100 million minimum on "institutional plus" funds, so it might be worth asking for VIIIX (expense ratio 0.02%)

Thanks guys!  I asked about VTI.  Hopefully they will add it, but ML has not been receptive to change in the past.  I'll let you know what they say.

All the funds you listed are mutual funds. I think it would be unusual for a 401K to allow purchasing a limited selection of ETFs. Either they would allow no ETFs at all, or there would be a brokerage option allowing purchasing any ETF. Are you looking for mutual fund recommendations? In that case this might be the right list: https://institutional.vanguard.com/fund-list/?filters=&sortBy=assetClass&benchmark=true&viewType=expenseRatio.

What do you feel you missing? Those are a good starting point, and I am guessing there are some bond funds and others you didn't list.
