Newcomer question: where to roll over a small 401K?
« on: April 15, 2015, 08:53:14 AM »
Hi smart people.
I am new to all of this and hoping you can help. I have a small ~$8k 401K I am looking to roll over. Not sure if I should roll over to my Fidelity 401K with my current employer as I've heard Vanguard is much better. Perhaps a Vanguard 401K or IRA?
I'm 37, married, zero debt, not much savings (around $60K plus own home outright).
I value feedback from people who are awesome with their money. ;)

Fidelity is usually pretty good too. You could post the funds you have access to and their expense ratios and people could probably tell you if that's a good option.

If you don't roll into your new 401k you'll have to roll into an IRA (since you can only get access to a 401k through your employer), in which case both fidelity and vanguard would be fine options.

Thank you, terran. I have 33 options in my Fidelity account (I currently put 50% in Alger Cap Apprec A - ACAAX and 50% in FA Health Care A - FACDX....And I have $16K in FA FREEDOM 2030 A  (FAFEX) , I'm a beginner - but very interested in learning.)

The copy-and-paste mess might make this impossible, but I'll try at least. Thanks for any help.

Ouch on the expense ratios there.  I wouldn't roll into that 401K.  It's OK for new money because you don't really have a choice, but for money you do have a choice with, there many better options out there.  I'd rollover into an IRA at Vanguard, if it were me.

Also - you're 50% in a sector fund?  That's a pretty risky play, but doesn't affect your rollover decision.

I figured with the high expense ratios. I will probably lean toward the Vanguard IRA, so thank you. However, now I am wondering where my current Fidelity funds should be spread. (This is very overwhelming).

Those expense ratios are disgustingly high. Ask your HR to at least get some Spartan options.

On the old rollover? Vanguard IRA.

TomTX, you should see our health insurance plans! Now there's a laugh.

Any advice on where to put the Fidelity funds?

If you'd rather just have things in the same place rolling into a fidelity IRA would be fine too since you should have access to spartan funds with that money, which have similar expense ratios to vanguard funds.
