Moving Maganged Portfolio to self manage but what about 401k?
« on: February 26, 2023, 12:18:28 PM »
Hi! I am moving my managed portfolio into Vanguard for self management. All the liquid money I am putting into VTI but I have 401k's that have rolled over from previous employers and I imagine those accounts will roll into retirement accounts on the Vanguard side and I have no idea how to handle those accounts. Does anyone have advice as to what I should do with those? Thank you in advance!

Does Tax-efficient fund placement - Bogleheads help, or are you asking about something else?

I am asking how will I know how to manage it? Are there specific things that I can select to put it in or does it run on its own? I am just not sure what to do with those accounts now.

To a large extent you don't need to "manage" your investments.  Instead, picking an Asset allocation with which you can be comfortable, then picking individual funds such as those mentioned in Three-fund portfolio - Bogleheads, is the lion's share of what you need to do.  Then you don't worry about selling and buying in order to "time the market".

Like MDM says, we picked a portfolio. Then we created a spreadsheet to track our portfolio. During times of low volatility, we rebalance quarterly. During times of higher volatility--such as now--we check our balance about every 6 weeks and rebalance anytime we have an asset class that is more than 1.0% out of true.  Pick what works for you and stick with it to avoid timing the market.

Another good resource for getting comfortable with handling your own portfolio:

Folks have recommended good resources.  Just for a bit more context -- you'd roll your 401k into a traditional IRA.  And that account will be just like your regular brokerage account (in other words, you can hold ETFs, stocks, etc.).  I don't know how IRA's at Vanguard work, but at many places you can set up auto-rebalancing so that it will basically manage itself.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
