Morbid investments
« on: June 06, 2018, 03:26:06 AM »
Hi.
I live in an area with crazy high obesity and teenage diabetes cases. (not in the US) Some forecasts predict that almost 50% of all residents in my country will have some sort of illnesses or complications from these illnesses (high blood pressure, blindness, amputations, early death) in the next 15-30 years. It's crazy and I feel sorry for the people who just can't make a change in their lives. But who am I to dictate people to change their ways of life.

Since this isn't just a local phenomenon but a global problem, I'm not just focusing my town. I would like to know what companies are the global players in treating and curing related illnesses.

Don't get me wrong, I feel sorry for the people affected. But this is just such an obvious investment opportunity to me.

Sometimes unhealthy people end up using less health care than healthy people because they die earlier. According to this study, obesity doesn't greatly change the average healthcare costs in the US (and for some groups like white males it can lower costs).

This is a good point I didn't think of. Thanks for sharing.

One of our first investments was in a Vanguard Healthcare fund. Our logic was that the baby boomer population (the ones with most of the money) were going to age into spending more in that category. Were you thinking of something more targeted at that specific population than a general healthcare fund?

That's a good question. I actually have no clue. I am thinking of anything between investing in a broad health care mutual fund or single stocks....or even invest in a nutritionist/personal trainer license for myself to go right to the source. :D
