I recently opened a tIRA and allocated about 30% to VTI. Not really sure what to do with the rest. any recommendation on bonds or another place where I can allocate that money?

equities 75-100%, bonds 0-25%
international equities 0-50% of your overall equities allocation
use VTI, VXUS, and BND

Have you read the stock series yet?

I'd probably recommend 100% VTI until you have significantly more to invest.

At your age and if you want to keep it simple then say around 75% VTI and 25% VEU, all world ex USA. Or you could ad some VO mid cap blend and/or some VB small cap blend.

80% total stock market index fund
20% total bond market index fund
You need to study past performance in order to make an educated decision about allocation ratio...

See three-fund portfolio (https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Three-fund_portfolio) and links therein for some suggestions.

Imitate Vanguard and Fidelity: their target date funds allocate 10% to bonds when retirement is far away.
