LOL @ this market
« on: June 06, 2014, 09:04:25 AM »
Jeeze. I started investing a year ago... and I look like an investing genius right now. My returns are 17% + right now lol.

The funny thing is that everyday I open up good ole yahoo finance to check the S&P. I hope for doom and gloom and the market to drop a gazillion points as I'm still in my 20s. Hurry up and drop market! Stop making me look so good ;)

that's what is so funny about investing the right way. i do nothing and i'm making awesome gains! my friend who trades actively made a fraction of what a made last year. why don't people realize how simple it is!

seriously lifting to get in shape and investing to make long term gains are the same fricken thing. then you have these "advisors" that muck everything up. oh wells. i'll take the advantage :)

Same here. Started my 401k in 2009, and more serious investing last year. I literally have nothing in the red! And it's kinda bugging me. Even trying to stay humble I worry I might become too confident, and how i will feel when we do have a correction. And also because I worry what will happen to all the money i put into the market at these prices..

I liked it when my small cap fund dropped 10% or so, maybe some sanity was returning. But then it keeps bouncing back up like crazy.

So true....exactly why I'm not a active investor.   HOWEVER,  stay the course when the market takes another beating.    It will happen again..

What Scandium said about staying humble resonates with me.  In a market like this everybody feels like a genius!  At the same time I can't wait for the next big dips, so that we can throw money in our FI accounts.

Active investing is for people who like to pay fees.

Yeah I have the same worries too. Say the market tanks and it's all doom and gloom. Well the sensible thing is to stay in the market and just wait till it gets back to where it is right?

My concern is what happens if the market is so artificially inflated that we need see these high prices again? Are we just screwed forever then? Seems like we would be...

Oh well... that's why I'm just learning to live off nothing incase something does go down like that :D

Well that would be unprecedented....even during the Great Depression.   But I guess that's the risk part of investing :)

Yeah it would be great to have a market like Japan. Think of the pluses of buying stocks on save for 20+ years. And if you think periods like that don't happen in the US, look at the inflation adjusted return of the S&p 500 from 1966-1982.

FWIW, too many people think the market is overvalued for it to be overvalued. Until those people capitulate and shove their money in, we will only have minor blibs like the 2011 20% correction.

Similar situation here. I started investing in 2009 and it's just been up, up, up. Only recently did I realize that I should actually be rooting for a serious downturn, since the next 6 years will be my heavy wealth-building period.

We'll see how much you lol when your account drops 20% in a month.  It's easy to be glib about your appetite for risk when you've only experienced good times.  Nobody buys a burglar alarm until after they've been robbed.

With that said, I'm also enjoying the runup but I'm trying to remind myself it's all imaginary money until the day I spend it.

I get a little disappointed when I see everything going up. I dont have much invested now <15K, so I am always hoping to see my ETF's way down when it is time for me to buy. At least the gains are getting my wife excited. She was worried we will lose everything "playing" the stock market. I will just not show her the accounts when things are in the red.

Everyone feels like a genius when their accounts are in the black. In fact, only active traders lost money since 2010. Most people who put money in on a monthly or semi-monthly basis have done just fine (almost everything is up by a solid margin... large cap, mid cap, small cap, foreign index, most sector funds, etc).

It's a test of your volition once markets start a downward trend and whether or not you stay the course.

Good luck stomaching the downturn, although even I have my doubts whether it will be more than 10% (even though that would be a buying frenzy for me!).

I took a look at my asset allocation and decided that 60/40 and a lower beta approach with some tweaks works well for us.  It truly hurts and sticks with you when you lose real money so I took a realistic look at our risk  level, given our goals.  So far, that is working.

The most dangerous person in the world is a really intelligent young man who's never had his teeth kicked in. - A really smart hedge fund manager

When you start cheerleading like this is when the market slaps you in your arrogant face. Stay humble and stick to your plan, assuming it's any good in the first place.
