Title: Having confusion selecting bonds with vanguard

I'm looking to shift another 3% of my portfolio to bonds and have read about individual bonds but have only had bond index funds before. Is there an advantage to using a individual bonds or just tossing it all in VBTLX (total market bond index) or a short term bond index?
