Best Vanguard Index Fund for 63 Year old
« on: August 10, 2014, 06:07:58 AM »
A family member is asking me for advice; he has $130,000 with fidelity and is very interested in jumping on the Vanguard train. He is not too concerned about risk, and he is planning to not touch this until he is 70, and will then only take out what he needs. In the meantime he plans to take out $25k probably this or next year. (The total amount is in a Traditional IRA) His yearly income is very low at the moment.

I was thinking about just a real basic setup. No more than 1-2 funds. Perhaps a balance fund, or VTSAX and one other bond fund.

Thanks for the advice!

Sorry there will probably be crickets as there won't be enough information to give a good answer. Your friend is just going to have to judge for themselves what their risk tolerance is and go for that.

If he has access to Spartan funds, he should consider leaving his money with Fidelity since their Spartan index funds mimic Vanguard's index funds.

There really isn't enough info, but a simple portfolio would be some % in Total Bond, % in Total Stock, % in International Stock.  Probably more titled towards the bond given your friend's age.
