Amazon and Alibaba stock?
« on: February 24, 2023, 09:36:00 AM »
Hi. Alibaba and Amazon at at good point to buy?  I must have somehow showed interest in these stocks as social media now keeps bombarding me with how great they are.  Time for a money moustache reality check.
Thanks for the help.

Covering the purchasing habits of most of the world seems fairly diversified - sarcastically speaking.

I don’t buy individual stocks, but I hold both of those as part of mutual fund holdings. I definitely buy a fair amount of Amazon every month (probably just under a couple hundred bucks worth), but only limited amount of Alibaba based on a quick scan of holdings.

Always at a good buy point today, same as yesterday, same as tomorrow.

Yeah, all those purchasing habits are being processed through these individual companies, who could at any time make one (or one series) of poor decisions that hurt all their revenue streams at once, so their income streams might be diverse, but their management of it and therefore their overall performance isn’t necessarily considered diversified.

I'll bite.

I do stock pick with 0.5% of my portfolio for fun. I do NOT consider this investing - I am gambling and speculating - and for that reason I keep it separate from my investment portfolio. My investment portfolio is all VTI, VOO, and BND. I stock pick for fun and so I am not tempted to do so with my larger investment portfolio. I enjoy the thrill of winning small amounts and I don't mind the sting of losing small amounts. I do hold Amazon and Alibaba - both of which are up for me. I enjoyed my wins with Caravan and didn't mind the losses with some fintech stock. Once or twice  a year I take half of the profits and move them to the investment side of my account.

If you want to engage in gambling I would only do so with a very small amount of your portfolio. At the end of the day, I'm not willing to accept any more risk than I have to (VTI and VOO are perfectly sufficient for that).

I haven't studied their financials but I would be wary of any Chinese companies, Jack Ma has run afoul with the Chinese government and it is hard to predict if the government will take further action against him and Alibaba. I think  Baba will be fine but it is risky.

When Amazon got into Healthcare not so long ago I thought this had the potential to be a turning point in the company. Certainly its not a direction that can turn a profit quickly but that's not what I expect from Amazon.

So my take on Amazon is definitely not one of them being the world's online retailer. No, they are a humongous IT company that has a side business of delivering packages - and they're brilliant at it(IT).

Now, healthcare is a software nightmare. So if Amazon can successfully apply their brilliance in this field, the market size is huge and potential profits as well.

So the question I ask is what could drive Amazon revenue beyond mere incremental gains? I believe healthcare can do that.

So I prefer Amazon over Alibaba.

The Chinese stock market has a way of not increasing as businesses grow, even if the Chinese economy goes up massively. Government policy is a part of this.

Re: Amazon, I wonder when they'll start making real money? Did they really print a loss last year, at what must be the height of their dominance? Negative $16.9B in cash flow last year? I haven't heard a growth narrative since AWS many years ago.
