Home Maintenance Checklist
« on: July 23, 2013, 09:38:33 AM »
Does anyone have some kind of home maintenance checklist/log/excel spreadsheet that reminds them about specific jobs that need to be done monthly/seasonally/yearly? I tried to google to look for something but they all seemed to be lacking/contradictory and I am not sure which ones are 'right'.

Thanks!

there probably isn't one that's 'right.' per say. You need to develop one based on your house. Here's a few from my house to get you started:

Monthly:
check furnace filter, replace as needed.
Walk around house, just doing a general inspection. trim back shrubs if needed, noting any insect colonies too close to the house.

Quarterly:
Inspect attic:
-look for wet sheathing in winter, especially near utility penetrations.
-make sure ridge vents aren't plugged
-inspect heating ducting and insulation
Inspect crawl space:
-sewer pipes and plumbing not leaking, no water intrusion through stem wall

Spring: check AC condenser
Fall: test-run heater

Make your own spreadsheet, is all I can suggest.

Funny, I was thinking about developing an app just for this purpose a while ago. Linked to your calendar, it would offer you periodic reminders of maintenance to be done. You could schedule all tasks for yourself, either one-offs or repeatable. Also, it could include links to Youtube videos with how-to's and tutorials, as well as (sponsored) links to people that can do this for you if you don't have the time or skills to DIY.

And then I remembered I can't code.

This sounds like an awesome idea! not being able to code shouldn't stop you - hire someone to do it for you if you don't have the skills/time/DIY.

Although this site is from Canada... you get the general idea.

Go to the "Maintaining a Home" tab.  I follow this somewhat... somethings they are a bit too "picky" on.

I actually made one a few years back.  It's not nearly as fancy as suggested here...  it just has a list of todo's associated with various entities to be maintained (car1, car2, house, etc).  It will nag you based on calendar or mileage that a particular thing needs to be done.

I wouldn't say it is particularly user friendly. ;)

One issue that has come up for us recently is leaking tank to bowl seals on the toilets - not a leak you would notice as it drips into the toilet bowl. The only reason I realized is because we have Hydroright dual flush converters that make an audible swoosh noise when the tank has to randomly top up.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
