« on: June 16, 2013, 12:38:46 PM »
I'm running out of material to read, so thought I'd hit you all up for some suggestions. I read a lot and fast, so would love to some suggestions for blogs in the following categories:

-personal finance (obviously) - I already read Joshua Kennon, MMM, ERE

-lifestyle/minimalism/simple living

-cooking, including gluten free

Thanks!

Whenever I get to that point, I find a new good blog, then read it from the beginning. That gives lots of material.

Imagine finding MMM today and having 2+ years of posts.

Tis strategy of finding one great blog and devouring it over weeks or months is much more enjoyable to me than finding 5 okay blogs and just reading the past few posts from each.

Regarding your first category, Mike over at lackingambition.com is a blog I have enjoyed in the past, though he rarely posts anymore (and in fact doesn't have that much overall, so reading his whole archives is pretty quick and enjoyable).  You see a whole transition from beginning to FI.

Regarding the lifestyle category, JamesAltucher.com is quite good.  Raptitude is also decent.

Read a few posts on those 3 and if they strike your fancy, dig back for more.  I think you'll enjoy.

If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

There is gluten-free simple living blog called roost that has some amazing photography, but depending on your personal preferences might be too...girly (? I mean that in a non-derogatory way, as a synonym for flowery?) Ditto with assortment blog, but it has an incredible tour of what is basically my dream house.

To add, I'll throw in:

OP, I know this is completely off your question, but have you tried logging your progress in what you're trying to accomplish? I'm starting to log mine, not for any readers, but as a self reflection tool.

I really like badmoneyadvice.com.  He's been on hiatus for quite awhile but his posts are educational and hilarious (to me).  For example I particularly like http://badmoneyadvice.com/2009/12/i-will-guarantee-your-treasury-bonds.html and http://badmoneyadvice.com/2010/01/bond-prices-go-down-when-interest-rates-go-up.html

http://www.amateurgourmet.com Reliable and new stuff, I found.  Good ideas to mix up the usual repertoire (like zuchini lemon cake) or reliable takes on standards (like collard greens, which I had never tried before).

I started a journal a long time ago here, but deleted most of it because I got creeped out about the amount of financial info I had on here. This forum isn't as small as it used to be, which is mostly a good thing, but not without some drawbacks.

I don't post my trackings publicly, but I still do them.

It's interesting to me that many of the blogs/forums mentioned, I read now. Either I'm with a bunch of INTJs and/or the best stuff around does get noticed. Mind you, I still think many of these websites are esoteric.

What gets me is we're talking a few blogs with millions of people out there. Who was it that said, "the masses of men lead lives of quiet desperation"? If not quiet desperation, than at least pretty quiet lives.

We all want to fit in. While fitting in is OK, I hope to live my life being challenged. At the same time, I do enjoy a leisureful life as well.

This has little to do with personal finance, but some to do with minimalism and cooking (in unexpected ways).  It will definitely slow down your reading speed.

Imagine finding MMM today and having 2+ years of posts.

I can confirm that this is an AWESOME feeling.  I found MMM at the end of April (whenever the WaPo article was) and just finished reading through every single post a about two weeks ago.  The only problem is, I'm used to reading 5-6 kickass inspiring MMM posts a day, and now all of a sudden it's down to like 2 per week.  Quite the drop off.

Some of these other blogs look pretty interesting.  Good work on the recommendations all.

I was going to suggest calculatedrisk.blogspot.com. I read wonkbook and plum line blogs on the Washington Post every day, and usually check Talkingpointsmemo.com also. I'd also recommend juancole.com-he's very deep on international affairs. One of my favorite reporters today is Matt Taibbi of Rolling Stone magazine, http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/blogs/taibblog. I also really admire the founder of truthdig.com, Bob Shearer.

I read a fair amount, but I also listen to a lot of news podcasts on my infrequent but long commutes. I love, love, love The Young Turks. They are the world's largest internet news show, and have tons of different channels and offerings on YouTube. I podcast them. I also really recommend Left, Right and Center for a podcast; I really appreciate how they give their perspective on events but don't get offensive or offended. Turns out we all agree a lot more than you'd think. Lastly, every time I take the time to listen to This American Life, there's something in it I want to share with my kids.

minimalism, lifestyle: smallnotebook.org , 365lessthings.com , and the archives of Brooks Palmer's blog (on hiatus for health reasons)
gluten free: glutenfreelyfrugal.com
frugal cooking: The Prudent Homemaker, her blog and her website
cooking in general: Food52.com

Oh!  Also I really like this one:
https://familyinequality.wordpress.com/

Doesn't fit into any of the categories you were asking about but oh well.  If you're intrigued by pop sociology stuff but want more reasoning and data, this guy has some interesting takes on things.  And graphs and things.  And some humor.

Hi.

I am not sure of the exact name of the blog but just google "Living Stingy blog" and it should come up.  I think you can guess what it is about!  The writer stopped adding to the blog about 6 mos. ago but there is a lot to read.  He recommends killing your TV like MMM.
