health insurance
« on: January 18, 2013, 12:01:20 PM »
I'm switching jobs (its happening, non negotiable, much better opportunity) and the new employer only covers the state minimum of 50% for employee-only portion. Meaning employee+family is not covered, just the employee portion. I'm still trying to get the details but according to the HR rep for the company my out of pocket for me+spouse+kid = $691. That's obviously outrageous. Well, it is only a $1200 deductible and Kaiser so I guess for a cadilac plan that isn't bad.

ehealthinsurance.com has plans around $300 with doc visits covered. I don't have an HSA and none of the plans I got from ehealth are HSA compatible. so there will be doctor's visits which I want covered. I don't and won't have the money this year to cover deductibles so I need more than a simple catastrophic plan.

The plan I am considering is a united healthcare 70-10000. $10k deductible, $35 co-pay.

Are there any other sites or plans I can look into? Any other advice? I'm treading in very foreign water here. thanks!

I'm assuming the $691 is per month? Wow!

It is all relative to area but $700/month for me and my family would only get a HDHP with a $10,000 deductible so for me I would take the cadillac plan.

691 seem pretty reasonable to me. I pay 373 right now to add on kid to my wife's Kaiser plan. I always thought it was good and it is if you dont need anything done while you are traveling. I've been trying to get Kiaser to pay for an urgent care visit for the last seven months. If we stay with Kaiser that price will go up to 494 in august when we have our second.

I think you are on the right track. United seems to be about the cheapest when I have looked around. What happens if you get insurance with your employer and then get you spouse and child on thier own plan? Remember you payment is tax deductible (or really pre tax rather) for the employer plan but not for the plan you buy on your own.

oh, I forgot to mention my wife will not be working so she can't cover us through her employer.
For just me the out of pocket is about $132 per month. For just her and kid would be $200. I don't think the tax savings make up the difference.

So here is how the numbers break down

All Kaiser 691 premium

All United 300 premium and 99.60 taxes total 399.60

You Kaiser everyone else United 136 premium 200 premium 66.4 taxes total 402.40

Unless you are in worse health and need more medical coverage than the rest it seems like united would be the best. I assume you have looked into at lease kaiser, anthem and united (those are least the big three)

Holy crap man where do you live and how big is your family?

Never mind I just saw your journal and read all about you. That seems crazy for your family size.

DH consulting, in MA, monthly was $1972 for family of 6 with $4000 deductible. $691 is a bargain.

We have an HSA with a $5k deductible for $406/mo for a family of 5. I suddenly feel much better about writing that check every month.
